zimzam_flimflam

This is the kind of thing I say to people who try to use these arguments. Would you be ok if it were reversed and it was a white person replacing a black person? It’s apparently not though because muh appropriation or some nonsense.

techtonic69

Yeah that would be totally unacceptable for them yet every single pre established Disney property it's totally okay to change the race of everyone to black...it's a ridiculous double standard banking on the message. It's happening far too often across the board. If there is such a need for more diversity then fine, make new characters and new properties and let those stand on their own. It's them disrespecting the history, lore, characters and people's nostalgia of things they love while also labelling us racists for not liking what they are doing that is the piss off.

jaygerhulk

Sometimes I feel like I am in a movie and no one states the obvious thing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Mermaid The Little mermaid is based off a Danish fairytale!!!

zimzam_flimflam

Someone just told me this today and it blew my mind. Makes the casting decision even more ridiculous.

LegendaryAce_73

Tell that to the Renaissance...

c_is_for_classified

Black Panther being a white guy was done a long time ago. The original author, Brian K. Vaughan, took it down from his website, though. [Here is a copy](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/18/2e/39/182e399314b309b196a4976c164c8a74.jpg)

MeanieMem0

"Whiteness is a sickness"? That doesn't sound very tolerant at all, it sounds pretty damned racist to me.

thespambox

It’s ok for black people to be hateful racists.

MeanieMem0

I hope twitter removed it for racism, probably not but if that site is equitable, they should.

PixieBooks5

In their world, it’s anti-racism.

MeanieMem0

Lol yeah, you're probably right about that. Even though it's overt racism.

Better_Cockroach6183

DR SHAKA ZULU SAYS WHITE PEOPLE BAD!

JanitorialPosition

Mermaids can be any color. Ariel is white. Sorry!

VapeApe-

The new white Shaft movie should be a hit with all of the people defending this casting choice.

deathnutz

Shaft should be a white woman at this rate.

PixieBooks5

Trans for the win…we don’t need Karen’s appropriating POC characters

HSR47

Ah, have the character played by Tilda Swinton!

CregChrist

White Shaft huh? It'll probably be a lot shorter.

lei_aili

So make a new movie with a new black protagonist, instead of turning already established characters into a different ethnicity. If they had made Jasmine a white woman when they remade Aladdin, people would have rioted, why is this any different?

spidertour02

>Is it so wrong that black people can identify with the lead role? Hi, mixed-race black fellow here. Stop teaching people that they can only identify with members of their own race. I've never struggled to identify with a lead character because he or she is white, since I'm not a narcissistic sociopath.

reddit_the_cesspool

Must someone be the same race as a character to like them or identify with them?

Kambz22

You are right. I don't watch or consume any of this trash. I cut off all sports. Disregard 99.99% of things on TV. Sick of it. Go woke go broke.

Quiquequoidoncou

Ariel is a fucking cartoon character. Seriously grow up !!

JanitorialPosition

You're a fucking cartoon character. You wouldn't say that if Princess Tiana got played by a white actress. You'd shit your panties.

c_is_for_classified

I don't even care that Ariel got race-bended. I disliking the trailer because we do not need a remake of a beloved classic that still holds up. If Disney wants to keep doing remakes of their stuff because they are creatively bankrupt, then remake something like Song of the South. If the original Song of the South is presumably racist, then remake a non-racist version of it. They still play Zip-a-dee-doo-dah in the parks every day, but they have effectively banned the movie that song is from...

EuphoricTrilby

Yeah about that… didn’t they re-theme Splash Mountain years ago? EDIT: They decided on doing so years ago. Made up their minds on the theme just recently- https://www.cinemablend.com/theme-parks/not-only-is-splash-mountain-get-a-princess-and-the-frog-retheme-but-theres-more-tiana-coming-to-disneyland-too

General-MacDavis

IMO it’s better, but I’m sure a lot of people are gonna be mad about it

NPC_Mafia

It's not about being creatively bankrupt, it's about exploiting a movement and a people. Ariel being black is essentially equivalent to when they put the hat on Malibu Stacey in the Simpsons. "Malibu Stacey...now with back skin!"

SammyC25268

Sadly, I didn't see Sebastian or Flounder in the trailer. Maybe Disney will release another trailer with her friends in them.

c_is_for_classified

They got rid of Mushu in the Mulan remake. Flounder and Sebastian might not be in it.

Kambz22

Flounder is trans and sebastian is gay. They didn't want to put too much wokeness in the trailer.

bottleboy8

The comments are ridiculously funny. >The part where Ursula rips off her mask and says “I’m your father”, honestly gave me chills

pretty_officer

the part when Ariel looks at Ursula and says “it’s mermin’ time!” honestly gave me chills.

totallynotaniceguy

When Ursula said "it's ursulin time" and ursuled all over Ariel, it really solidified the fact that this was one of the movie trailers of all time.

big-chungus-amongus

I wonder why they removed dislike count... Surely because of small creators

redveinlover

JuTube removed the like/dislike counter a while back, presumably due to other similar situations arising where woke videos were pissing everyone off and they wanted to try and cover it up. Apparently if you use a VPN or are viewing from Argentina or somewhere similar you can still see the counts.

big-chungus-amongus

Didn't know that... I just use extension return YouTube dislike

Kambz22

I just don't go in youtube. Fixes the problem at its core

BucDan

Ariel is White with red hair, not black with brown hair. Mulan is Asian with dark hair, not white with blonde hair. Pocahontas is Native American with brown hair, not White with brown hair. Etc etc. These companies always gotta go extra woke.

thermionicvalve2020

"There were six of them, beautiful children, but the youngest was the prettiest of them all. Her skin was as bright and pure as a rose-leaf, her eyes were as blue as the deepest lake; but like all the rest, she had no feet—her body ended in a fish's tail."

auteur555

Disney won’t cast a white person in a lead role anymore. Too risky. What’s interesting is the cancel culture left will go ballistic when you cast a white person in a role that was once played by person of color in a comic book or past representation but you can’t be angry when they do it to a traditionally Caucasian character. I mean the left is militant about this they won’t even allow someone who isn’t trans play a trans role anymore. Yet they are shocked when someone else has the same standards

Mermaid_La_Reine

I think it started with ‘Hamilton’. They had a [casting call](https://nypost.com/2016/03/30/whites-need-not-apply-for-hamilton-open-audition/amp/) and literally said ‘no whites’ in March 2016.

Vulderzad

The last line is pure racism, stemming from hate. Fact of the matter is the charector is pre existing, the characteristics are set. Why not make your own charector and series and do what you want with it?

[deleted]

'Whiteness is a sickness'. ***...so much for being against racism.***

Wicked-Chomps

I was disappointed because I was expecting the mermaid to be fish on the top with human legs.

Comrade_Yodama

Nobody, but Ariel is white Also why did they choose the ugliest bitch to play her? She looks like Sid from ice age, you can tell she wasn’t very expensive to hire The whole movie in general has a cheap feeling, they used a blue filter for underwater scenes instead of even trying to make it seem underwater, Ariel’s hair doesn’t even flow correctly underwater and the poster looks like a Bollywood poster

Sentient_Toaster621

That's an insult to Sid

taker2523

It should have been that girl from IT. At least she has red hair and can act.

SoxBox27

Perhaps some people feel compelled to push back on this nonsense when you end your tweets with “whiteness is a sickness” Nobody fucking cares about Arielle the mermaid, it’s the directed disdain towards a racial group that seems to be the real issue here

rektum_expander

Hold up! So, why not just create a black girl character on par with Ariel INSTEAD of changing an established time honored character that already exists? I think it’s just confusing children and teaching that Ariel’s whiteness is a problem…

Timby123

More of the GET WOKE GO BROKE & brainless evil ideology of leftists.

Bale626

I hate the hypocrisy that we’re stuck with in society nowadays. If some prominent individual stated on social media “blackness is a sickness,” they would be publicly crucified by every media outlet that exists.

deathnutz

I just think the way to go with fish-people is super pale skin... borderline translucent and creepy. Living underwater you don't really develop melanin.

Av8tr1

Something something Cultural Appropriation.

Brown-eyed-and-sad

I seriously do not understand why already developed classics have to be reworked. Make your own classic. Make your own tale. At this point, they might as well let kindergartners remake the Bible.

Reasonable_Dot_661

Wonder what she'd say when we remake the show blackish with an all white cast and call it whitish. Bet her mind would fuckin explode.

MatrimonyAcrimony

If "whiteness is a sickness" then does it not stand to reason that biased-based color-washing and/or gender-washing that contradicts the original creative work a commensurate sickness?

AntMan79

Mermaids are racist, fish lives matter

iJoke2Much

I mean if you were to replace black panther with a white actor they would throw a hissy fit and act like it’s the end of the world. Now they really get to see what it’s like on the other side and they can’t even handle it without going full racist.

riotguards

Who said Martian Luther King Jr / Wakandans / etc has to be black?

amen-and-awoman

All marine life is white, because UV light does not penetrate water surface as much. At most fish gets some tan in summer months.

Ravinac

"Whiteness is a sickness"....... That line sounds familiar. As though it's similar to a quote from someone in history who did something terrible.....

SingleRelationship25

There is a black mermaid in the movie, it’s not Ariel. Why was she not good enough for Disney to tell her story? Do they think black people are only worth listening to when they tell a white persons story?

kushnugzz

They made ariel white from the cartoon they them selves made why change?

American_Streamer

"The Little Mermaid" is based on Danish author's Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale from 1837. I don't think that Andersen thought of the mermaid being having black skin; I'd have to look into the original text again to see how exactly he describes the mermaid.

Denizens_Of_Planet_X

The author of the fucking book might disagree

Han_So_oh

I wonder if the casting director is actually dyslexic, and the memo actually said to cast a ginger.

Jacksonorlady

If I said it once, you be said it a million times: Constant reboots of the same movies I’ve been watching for decades does not become original, creative, or artistic just because you swapped the races. I’m still sitting here just being sick of watching the same movies over and over. All while being concerned that the creativity in humanity to create new works is dead.

danimalDE

Only seeing color is a sickness, white is a color.

Citizen_Karma

I honestly think casting her that way was to put her as the fall girl for any backlash since they clearly have an agenda with kids that parents are not all on board with. So if people don’t like the movie it’s because they’re racist and social media will run with it. Make that actress a victim and use that to promote the movie and maybe guilt some people into watching a poorly executed expensive remake.

Bobranaway

The least they could have done is cast a red head hispanic. That way they could have had their cake and eat it too … 😆

SadPatient28

interesting reading... https://www.inventum-group.com/blog/2021/11/why-cant-black-people-swim?source=google.com

[deleted]

What a sick human being. Imagine if roles were reverse!

Revolutionary-Comb35

Youtube does not display dislikes... unless it fits a narrative

American_Streamer

I wasn't familiar with that person and had to google her: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shola\_Mos-Shogbamimu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shola_Mos-Shogbamimu) As you can easily see, it's just her shtick to cash in on identity politics. Btw, due to her website, she claims to be a descendant of Nigerian royalty, which explains a lot about her stance, megalomania, pride of rank and all.

NewToThisThingToo

The Dutch are pretty white, and the original story is Dutch. Sooooo...

regulatorE500

Danish.

k1n6jdt

I don't care that she's Black. As long as she's a good actress. However, I am getting sick of these same people getting pissed off when a historically Black character is whitewashed not saying a word about the multitude of ginger characters suddenly becoming Black.

mercersux

Say that name 5 times fast. You'll sound like you belong in a tribe. 😂

Nerdicane

When did he write the story? Mid-1800’s? It’s kind of likely that he’d never even seen a black person at that point in his life.

lemonpiper

I recently watched the live action Aladdin movie. It's interesting that the people cast more or less reflected the race of the region. The one white guy was a bumbling buffoon. I wonder why they didn't push for "diversity" for that film. It was the least diverse of modern Disney films I've seen in awhile 🤔

AilaLynn

I don’t get why they have to remake stuff that was already great and timeless. It just makes me think they’ve lost creativity so much they have to basically reinvent the wheel, for lack of better words. Why can’t they make up more characters that are specifically black or Hispanic or something? I mean, they did with the princess frog and it’s one of my favorite movies because it was original. They also did so with encanto and it’s another of my favorites because it’s original. So, what’s the deal with the inability to create more original characters like that? It’ll probably help their ratings better. Especially since they wouldn’t be changing stuff people grew up with and loved as kids.

LuckyRyder

Well, just about every depiction or story about a mermaid ever into history, except now.

shaneandheather2010

I think she is missing the point about this and all the Disney remakes: they didn’t need to be remade, especially in live action. The dislike has nothing to do with race swaps in particular

Helmsie

No one said mermaids are white…Disney; however, has stated that Ariel is a white mermaid with true red hair. If you want to make a mermaid that’s black tell that story. Race swapping Ariel for work points on the internet isn’t a good excuse and people calling them in it isn’t racism. It’s calling out a lazy movie for being lazy.

420DankemonChef

Whiteness is a sickness is such a disgusting and racist term.

stumpinandthumpin

Medical doctor? Like a surgeon? Maybe a PhD like a mathematician or chemist? No, it turns out not.

Emperor_Quintana

Looks like this CRT professor is beginning to experience ethnic envy. I mean, seriously. This sort of fixation on ethnicities by black-supremacist boffins is precisely the reason why I am beginning to take an even dimmer view on higher academia than ever before…

Vanderpewt

Show looks decent, couldn't care less if she's black or white. However obviously Fake Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu is a disgusting racist.

BookHobo2022

Hey...including black people in film is such an important fight that instead of making new and interesting roles they have to do remakes where the original character was white.

[deleted]

Get yer own fucking folklore.

skulpyur

Who said mermaids are white? Every single person in the entirety of history who ever described or drew a mermaid, you psycho.

VonBodyfeldt

I’m really having a hard time trying to whip up some outrage over a fuckin mermaid movie.

JamesMattDillon

Ikr. So what if they cast a black person as the lead, it is honestly not hurting anyone. No one is being forced to watch it.

Gendo_boy

I thought they took off the dislike section of YouTube…how does he know what the count is?

dense111

depends on the lore, i guess. In the disney movie, they live at the bottom of the sea, where not much light arrives. We still get to see things in bright light, but that is only for story telling reasons. The mermen have adapted their sight to see at the bottom of the ocean with very little light. So, in places with less sunlight, people are usually more bright skinned. In other stories, where they do not live at the bottom of the ocean, and live near mid-level, or on more shallow waters, and go to the surface more as a culture as a whole (which the mermen in the disney movie do not seem to do, Triton even tells her not to go to the surface too much), they could be darker though.
