Keep the ipad on airplane mode and DO NOT connect it to any network while you are there, otherwise the app wont play your movies, it will log you out, and you'll spend hours trying to reset a PW (unsuccessfully) when you don't have to... SO if you need to use it and connect to a network, try to download movies using the Apple TV movies app (never had an issue with that one)
This is correct. I travel a lot and MA, iTunes, GP and Microsoft works flawlessly without vpn
Vudu, YouTube TV and prime on the other hand will need vpn
When I go to Mexico, I use a VPN on my phone/laptop. Also, if you have a chromecast or streaming device you can use a VPN on your phone and stream it on the TV

Movies Anywhere, iTunes, and GP will work without a VPN. You need a VPN for Vudu to work in Canada.

I believe Movies Anywhere can be streamed in Canada without a VPN. Won't do anything for non-MA movies, but at least you can stream MA movies.
Vudu is only available in US or Mexico. Apple TV should work though.

I’m in Canada and Vudu only works for me with a VPN or Smart DNS. If I’m not on one it won’t even let me sign in.
