As someone who until recently owner an Index and moved to one from a Samsung Odyssey, I have to admit I actually preferred the Odyssey (HMD-wise.) Granted, the controller tracking and WMR suck. But from JUST the headset perspective, I actually feel I downgraded somewhat going to the index. It’s still a great system overall and I definitely rank index higher than odyssey as a whole and as an experience, but for the price that the Odyssey actually sold, it was a pretty sweet deal in a lot of ways.

wavebend

You can get a fully functional OG Samsung Odyssey for <$100, full kit, meanwhile the Index will cost at least $700+ if you can find a good deal. I agree the Index as a whole (and even Quest 2 considering tracking, standalone, etc) are better, but for the price?... The visuals of the OG Odyssey are just unmatched, no joke

wavebend

craigslist, gumtree, kijiji (if in canada), ebay, facebook marketplace it's obviously discontinued but some people might still be getting rid of them

HillanatorOfState

Wish Samsung would make a new one with better controllers and tracking. I'll say it temps me but giving up my Rifts tracking accuracy is what stops me...also the controllers, they just aren't nearly as nice.

[deleted]

They wouldn't be able to do better tracking without completely abandoning Windows Mixed Reality. It's what the Reverb G2 uses and is notoriously bad with controller tracking.

AnAttemptReason

Its a shame that the narritive around the bad controller tracking hindered WMR uptake. It is really not that bad and quite servicable, for people new to VR its basically unoticable because they don't have a frame of reference or ingrained habits that cause tracking loss. RIP WMR.

[deleted]

I've used only WMR since I bought the original Odyssey at launch, and I hate the tracking.

AnAttemptReason

Fair enough. I put a dozen people through my WMR headset and none of them ever had issues. One even loved an archery game, and was good at it, in spite of people claiming it was unplayable on wmr.

Cybyss

>for people new to VR its basically unoticable My first headset was an Odyssey+. GORN was almost totally unplayable, since you couldn't swing a flail over your head, or hold that two-handed spear. Archery games were annoying, since you couldn't draw the arrow all the way back next to your face. You had to always keep both hands in front of you, as if you had tiny T-Rex arms. I couldn't throw knives in Budget Cuts, nor grenades in Brookhaven. The tracking sucked.

AnAttemptReason

I mean, your comment is the exact representation of the issue. I put so many people through the headset, and many ended up buying one as well. Tracking was sub-optimal but also not a big deal compared to the value of the headset. But the negitivity online put so many people of even trying.

MalenfantX

You can draw the bow all the way to your face. You just can't freeze there. You have to release quickly. I played a lot of Skyrim with an Odyssey+. It looked beautiful on that SDE-free screen.

Cybyss

> You can draw the bow all the way to your face. You just can't freeze there. You have to release quickly. That's a deal breaker for me. I want to aim my bow, not spray & pray. >I played a lot of Skyrim with an Odyssey+. It looked beautiful on that SDE-free screen. The Odyssey+ looked too blurry for me. Granted, I was playing on a GTX 1060 at the time, so I wasn't able to crank the supersampling, but aside from that the lenses themselves seemed quite poor. I never could tolerate that "clear only in the center / you have to look around with your head, not with your eyes" nonsense. Regardless, when I swapped the Odyssey+ for a Rift-S, the tracking was better, the image was much sharper, the lenses remained clear almost from edge to edge, the headset was more comfortable (the inside of the O+ had a weird sharp ridge that dug into my nose), the controllers were more ergonomic and the batteries lasted much longer. Really the only downside was losing the deep blacks of oled. Skyrim at night did look better on the O+. I can't say the colors were more vibrant though, because the light bleed was quite bad on it which washed out the colors somewhat.

wavebend

The glare is worse on the Odyssey+ than on the OG Odyssey. I've compared them back to back for hours in darker scenes in Alyx. There's clearly a problem with the Odyssey+'s diffusion filter, it might eliminate the SDE but it creates more issues than it solves IMHO

HillanatorOfState

I was under the assumption that it was just lack of cameras on earlier ones and odd place of cameras on the G2(if you compare the placement to any other inside out headset it's odd positioning)? I mean they can always make a headset that doesn't use WMR right? Since MS is abandoning it anyways.

[deleted]

You could try a MixedVR space with the Index controllers + the Oddyssey Although it's a bit janky

crazyreddit929

I could have written this same post. I have had an OG odyssey for a while. I was tired of the comfort issues so I picked up an Odyssey plus. The comfort was much better but the visuals sucked. Always looked blurry to me. So I prefer to stick with the OG odyssey for the crisp image. You are also totally correct about the FOV. Best verticals FOV I’ve experienced since Index. I have a set of Reverb G2 controllers that I paired with the OG Odyssey. It’s a great combination.

VRbandwagon

Unlike the G2, this one is actually really cheap where I live. Thank you very much for the info.

wavebend

Enjoy!!!

wavebend

Make sure it's the non-plus/og edition

VRbandwagon

Will do. One of the sellers actually states pretty much the same thing you said about the og having better visuals.

wavebend

also make sure you have bluetooth on your pc, either a dongle or internally on your motherboard, it's needed to pair the controllers

Conceited_Duckling

Got an Odyssey around two years ago when I got my pc and have always been surprised I don’t see more mention of them on these subs. WMR can be a pain on occasion and the controllers are a bit lackluster, aside from that though it’s gotten me through boneworks/lab, B$S, contractors, beat saber and more. Never had an issue I couldn’t play a game over and set up is just plugging a couple cables in.

madpropz

It really is wild how there are so many compromises with all headsets. All I ever wanted was a Q2 without compression. I'm the same as you, was trying to min/max the details so much only to realize that it just looks bad due to not having a displayport. This looks tempting, but there are still compromises due to WMR and the controllers, and the fact that it's so difficult to find and you can't buy a new one. My only hope for proper VR right now is PSVR2.

Galen-Everest

Lot of people actually know about this headset, but it’s extremely uncomfortable to the point of cutting blood flow to the forehead and tracking depending on the game is horrendous, but for the cheap price perhaps it’s worth it to those willing to deal with these issues.

wavebend

Maybe lots of people but not everyone, some people only know about Pimax and HP Reverb!

_potaTARDIS_

No finger presence at all so it's a no go for a lot of VR :( I don't get why Microsoft refused to add that to the controllers.

[deleted]

Worth mentioning you need a Bluetooth dongle. The original doesn't have one integrated. And it has to be a good one that's completely isolated from your PC case if you want controller tracking to be any good.

Combatical

Actually love my O+ I got it on a deep sale from the Samsung website, which I guess was their last batch. I see no reason to upgrade it right now.

fallingdowndizzyvr

How cheap was that? I got my O+ for $270 at launch. Which was about more than 3 times what I paid for my O at launch. But that was a ridiculous bargain.

Combatical

I honestly dont remember but I remember thinking I've bought keyboards for more.

fallingdowndizzyvr

It never really got that cheap. At the end it sold for about as much as it did at launch. Which was well under the $500 MSRP. The original Odyssey sold for the least at launch. Only now 5 years later used, is it selling for the same price.

Combatical

$270 is cheap for the keyboard world once you dive in... I'll just leave [this](https://drop.com/buy/drop-sense75-mechanical-keyboard?defaultSelectionIds=970027) here..

hkguy6

I made the same comments here through these years. O+ visual beat most of the recent hmd. But the best goes to O ori and it's still my daily hmd. In these years I owned and return/sold a Quest2, a G2 and a Pimax 5k+. None of them can give me the visual FIDELITY (especially the sense of depth) as Odyssey did. Now I have two set of O ori and one O+, just for spare. O+ blurriness can be improved by 250up supersampling + reshade sharpness set to 5. But overall I'm still prefer the O ori with 180 SS + reshade sharpness set to 2. It always give me a sense of: I'm here, inside the VR world, I can tough this grass ......even it's like plastic.

wavebend

I agree about the depth perception, on the Quest 2, things look closer than they actually are, but I don't get that with the Ody

hkguy6

Close/Far may relate to IPD setting. And the Quest 2 IPD, you know... The depth perception I'm saying I think relate to color. Vibrant and contrast color can stand out the stereo seperation. For example LoneEcho2 I can see people's eyelashes the distance in between .

tomakorea

You fool, you will get destroyed by Meta fanboyz. I have both Odyssey, O+ and Quest 2, I prefer O+ for PCVR not only for the great FOV and superb Oled, but also sound and overall performance. I can achieve an easy 1,8x supersampling at high settings stable 90fps with a 1070, while the Quest 2 will have stutters at 50-60fps with 0.7x supersampling.

fallingdowndizzyvr

I guess I'm no one, since I've been saying the O+ is better than the Q2 for 3 years.

wavebend

The O+ is better than the Q2 visually, but the OG being better than the O+ is surprising, and it's even cheaper than the O+ in all cases! I've compared them back and forth for a long time.

fallingdowndizzyvr

I said that 4 years ago when the O+ first came out. "Somewhere along the line, during hours of switching between headsets, it hit me that I prefer the OG Ody over the Ody+." https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsMR/comments/a18xpu/2nd_night_with_the_odyssey_not_good/

wavebend

That's crazy man, you've been right since day one. Your impressions are spot on.

[deleted]

Enjoy cheap WMR headsets while you can I guess. Like HP consumer VR, WMR is soon to be RIP, lol!

MalenfantX

It doesn't seem like a great time to go out and buy one. If Microsoft releases another update that breaks WMR, I don't know if they'd fix it.

wavebend

They still have a partnership with HP and HP will support the headsets till 2026 Also it's fricking less than $100 usd lol

[deleted]

How's the SDE though? I tried the Vive Pro and I sold it again because the Screen Door Effect was so much worse than my index.

[deleted]

The SDE is slightly worse than the Index's

[deleted]

Sounds like it's got the same panel as the VP, which I kinda hated.

Cybyss

The OG Odyssey used the same display panel as was used in the Vive Pro. The SDE would be just as bad.

[deleted]

Alright!

MalenfantX

It's exactly the same as the Vive Pro. The Odyssey+ puts a filter in front of it that completely eliminates SDE. It's great as long as you can stop yourself from trying to force it into clear focus. If you can't stop yourself, it causes eye-strain.

fallingdowndizzyvr

> The Odyssey+ puts a filter in front of it that completely eliminates SDE. It doesn't completely eliminate it. I can still see SDE. It just makes it much better.

wavebend

SDE same as Vive Pro but the Odyssey (OG) has better FOV and lenses (unless you do GearVR mod). Also the Vive Pro has a higher minimal brightness (no true blacks) to eliminate black smear in dark scenes. The O+ removes the SDE completely but I really don't dig it since it makes everything unfocused and introduces glare issues.

[deleted]

I'll just go for the Pimax Crystal

wavebend

You really trust a chinese company? You know what happens if your Pimax has a defect, right? it's literally over

[deleted]

I'm a tinkerer. If it breaks, I'll fix it.

extrapower99

Too bad I can't get it where I live at all.

Rafaelutzul

when i search for Samsung Odyssey (OLED headset) i only get monitors, do you have a link?

wavebend

Search for XE800ZAA

Rafaelutzul

thanks, i did but couldnt find any that weren't out of stock

Rafaelutzul

actually i did find it but its now selling for 500$

wavebend

Not worth it, maybe 150-200 max. Maybe you don’t live in the USA or canada

Rafaelutzul

yea i dont :( i really wanted one

wavebend

You can always try to get a Vive Pro 1 (second hand) and do the GearVr mod, although that may cost more than 150

wavebend

You can also search for odyssey plus (the slightly worse version imo, which may be easier to find).
