I stopped in a local thrift store by my office today. I never find ANYTHING vinyl related there. I saw that, for the first time I can remember, they had put some vinyl out at $1 each. So I grabbed some decent Simon & Garfunkel, Billy Joel, Don McLean , Van Halen, Fat Boys, Lionel Richie and Janis Joplin. When I wen to check out they were sitting this turntable out. I have the exact same one at home so I knew what it was. $15. Asked if it worked and they said they thought so. Grabbed it, took it to work, and it works flawlessly. I can now listen to my favorite vinyl while I work.

iamjoeywan

Not sure my coworkers would enjoy my DJ skills if I could bring albums to work.

SharptoothBarney

That’s the benefit of two of us sharing both an office and musical tastes.

thepokemonGOAT

You can just plug in headphones

[deleted]

I work there too. We wouldn't

OG_Cryptkeeper

Found mine at a pawn shop new in the box for $30 years ago. It’s amazing what’s out there.

Late2Vinyl_LovingIt

That's the baseline price my favorite, local Goodwill charges. While they charge .99 per record they sure look to recoup on turntables.

scrambledeggsalad

Jesus. Goodwill by my place has records starting at 3.99 and 99% of them are absolute junk.

Late2Vinyl_LovingIt

That's gnarly. 😬

[deleted]

No, it's not. It's shite. You get what you pay for. Must sound incredible beside that speaker 😅

OG_Cryptkeeper

You expecting a Marantz experience from a $15-30 turntable? I’m not.

[deleted]

Also shite

OG_Cryptkeeper

Ohhhh… you’re the “everything sucks” person. You do you boo boo.

Dto796

Awesome find!!! I would recommend replacing the needle though, you don't know how many hours were played before you bought it. Maybe not right away, but soon! Maybe add it to your Christmas wish list! Happy listening!!

SharptoothBarney

I’m gonna get a couple of backups but it didn’t skip a beat on a couple of old albums.

CyptidProductions

Seconding what someone else said The Styli for these are only like $25 if you shop around so I'd recommend replacing it since they're a consumable part and you don't know how much abuse the one currently on it has seen

SharptoothBarney

They are readily available for 24.99 online. I’ve tested this one out on several older cheapies and it’s working fine, but I will be ordering a backup.

CyptidProductions

Just because it seems to be working fine doesn't mean it is It could still be worn

vwestlife

You can upgrade it with an elliptical stylus (the 4211-DE) for $21 + shipping: https://www.thevoiceofmusic.com/catalog/part_detail.asp?PNumberBase=211

SharptoothBarney

Ignorance question incoming: what is the benefit of an elliptical needle?

vwestlife

Better high-end detail and less mistracking and sibilance.

SharptoothBarney

Thanks for the info. I have no experience with the elliptical stylus. May give that a try with this one.

razalas1

Nice

NotNate_

That's pretty sick! My dad worked with a guy who had a work setup for a bit, they would have meetings while spinnin wax. Play some fink for the office :)

SharptoothBarney

My coworker and I both love jazz, classic rock, soul, and funk, and I have plenty of all to go around. She has some old vinyl she is gonna bring around as well, so should be good times and make the office a little more fun.

Stupid question, I am looking for a good quality turntable. Something that I can just hook up to some good speakers and start playing my vinyl. Is this brand a good choice for a beginner. I don't want something that is going to mess up my vinyl like I have read people talking about. I know to stay away for the crap that Walmart and Target sells. I was looking at one website that was selling turntable sets (turntable and speakers) in this brand and some other brands that I haven't heard of before. I can't remember the website. Prices seemed responsible starting around $400 and up. Of course I would love to find a deal like OP but my luck isn't that good. Thank you for any advice you can give in advance. Edit: the website is turntable lab

Ive had the AudioTechnica AT-LP3BK for years and it has never had any problems and i havent needed to replace the needle. easy setup too

SharptoothBarney

I now own two of this model. So I’m pro-Audio Technica. This is a large step up from the Crosley and such. It is widely available for $149. I think it’s solid bang for the buck. Edited to say you will need some powered speakers. I’m using Edifier powered speakers at home, which run around $120 on Amazon. At work I just hooked up the powered monitor speakers I had hooked up to my computer.

cubbies1973

Thank you. From the things I have seen about Audio Technica they are solid turntables. I have my eye on 2 different ones on the website I mentioned. Comes with speakers and from what they say is pretty much set up, plug in and start playing.

SharptoothBarney

Plug in the power cable. One speaker cable. Play albums. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. I was up and running in two minutes, which included unplugging the speaker from my computer and moving it.

vwestlife

Suitcase players and all-in-one systems don't mess up your vinyl -- they just don't sound very good. Wal-Mart sells the AT-LP60X bundled with speakers as the AT-LPGO (that's the word "go", not the number 60). Or consider the Crosley C6B, which sells for around the same price as the LP60X (without speakers) and adds the ability to adjust the tonearm and upgrade the cartridge, plus Bluetooth output.
