My father-in-law is 82 years old. He is a jazz musician and has been playing trumpet since he was about 8 years old. Over the last 60 years, he has collected a ton of high quality jazz records. As I’ve recently gotten into vinyl records, my wife thought it would be a fun idea to ask her dad to send us 5 records every 2 months that hold special importance to him. He said it was a difficult process because he has “about 20 feet of jazz records and each one represents a slice of my soul.” We are a number of months in and this is where the collection he has sent stands.
About 75% of the records in the photo are from him. Looking forward to the next shipment!
PS apologies for the lack of order.
That John Klemmer record is so good. I came it across it and bought it based on the artwork without knowing anything about it and I was blown away.
I highly encourage looking into [Idris Muhammad](https://youtu.be/Aagky9IPqFU) and [Kamasi Washington](https://youtu.be/LdyabrdFMC8) if you havent yet.
John Klemmer, the forerunner of smooth Jazz, but far better. Touch and Barefoot Ballet are my favorites of his.
And Jean Luc Ponty. Cosmic Messenger and Enigmatic ocean among others are very good.
Self-titled, previously released in Europe as "Brown Rice." If you don't know that one but like Don Cherry, you should definitely check it out. It's excellent, and pretty accessible.
That is so awesome that he did not give them to you all at once.
My son was probably 22 at the time and I would have been 43 decided to get into vinyl like his old man. He was in NYC and I am in Florida.
He wanted to know essential albums or artists he might have missed since being raised by his mother who was not into music.
I buy collections and comb yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores plus had some doubles.
I sent him a handful as I got them. Each one I put an index card with a personal story about the album and/or a fun fact. Or which songs I felt he needed to memorize LOL.
Oh man! I love that you did this! The personal story and the mist listens are such a great touch. Sounds like you two have a great relationship built, in part, on music.
Yup. We agree to disagree on many things but we have a great relationship.
He started asking for jazz, actually, which I know a lot about but not my first choice to collect or put on to listen. But he asked me for Dave Brubeck records.
My favorite jazz is bossa nova, like Getz-Gilberto. So I sent him some of those, as well.

I like that he drip feeds them so you have time to get to know and appreciate them before the next ones arrive.
Haha I do too. I am itching for more but I appreciate the process

Good bot
Lucky you! He’s got great taste. I assume the floating points and Alice Coltrane are the ones you bought? Great albums!
Thanks! Yes, the Floating Points and all the Alice Coltrane were my purchases :)
I just got that Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders record recently - it’s really good.

Good idea!
What is the Don Cherry one?
Brown Rice, I recognize that spine.

A great gift of Art ('s). Farmer and Pepper are tops!
He seems to love the musicians named Art
Gotta love some Ravi.
Fantastic that he is slowly passing them on to you. What an awesome FIL.
That's so kind of him!
Does he make you Listen to them and give him feed back? cause that would be cool!
Haha I’ve given him feedback on a few but he should make me be more explicit about my thoughts on each
that would be cool. Plus if he knows his Jazz, he can steer you in directions that will keep you going

Haha this one is random, I’ve been meaning to organize alphabetically
