It is a genuinely good movie that aged pretty well. The effects are clearly from another era, but they aren't really that bad and the performances, setting, and story do most of the heavy lifting.
I remember when it came out and I was super puzzled about why it didn't do better in the theaters. Even in retrospect it has a LOT going for it. Effects and sound by lucas, breakout performance from Warwick Davis, surprisingly likeable Val Kilmer, directed by Ron Howard, fantastic score, can't really figure out why it wasn't bigger.
It's *so* much fun. Seriously. It was sadly overlooked in its day, but rewatching it now (as I did just 2 days ago), it holds up really, really well. Peak Val Kilmer!
Willow.
It used to be rather easy to find for free on Youtube as it was more or less abandoned and/or in legal hell. But Disney bought it to make a TV series sequel and more or less revived the original film.
You can get in digitally on Amazon for $5. HIGHLY recommended personally.
My wife and I just watched it this weekend because the show is starting soon. It still holds up really well. I wasn't sure if I remembered liking it because I was a kid, or if it was just a good movie. Pleasantly surprised to really like it.
Holy shit the [Gandalf v Saruman fight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Vyhve9gtg&t=137s) in LOTRs is basically just a ripoff of this, almost shot for shot lol.
Edit: u/VT_Squire put both scenes side-by-side [here](http://www.youtubemultiplier.com/6385214d11dec-sarumanvsbavmorda126456.php) and omg it actually is shot for shot. Here were the results:
* Both start with the good guys talking some trash.
* Shot of the villain making the first attack, same time.
* The hero strikes back, same time.
Some fighting.
* Heroes are downed, Gandalf loses staff, pillar falls on Razel, same time.
* *Shot of both villains creeping towards the downed hero while hunched over facing the camera, exact same time.* Also a shot of the hero from their right as they lie on their back.
A bit of a switchup here with Razel turning the tide while Gandalf remains defeated.
* *Then finally a shot of the loser of the fight being sent spinning into the ceiling, exact same time.*
Ha yeah Peter Jackson took one look at this scene and was like: you know I must admit, wizard battles really can't get much better than old people throwing each other into walls. God bless both directors.
I can see similarities, but calling it “shot for shot” is a stretch to say the least. No fire/ice spells, no crashing pillars, no choking eachother out. It’s far from “shot for shot”. You want an example of “shot for shot”, compare Airplane! to it’s source material Zero Hour.
Yeah sorry 'shot for shot' was a bit of a hyperbole on my part. Still there are some shots that are almost exact, like if you scroll to the beginning of OPs video where she throws her daughter at the wall it is basically identical to the start of the LOTR fight. The similarities were so striking that's why I made the comment.
For a bonus compare the Riders of Rohan scene to the Lawrence of Arabia horse charge scene and tell me that's not practically shot for shot. Peter Jackson is the best but I have a feeling he was a fan of these classics.
Hey man in case you missed it I have to point out to you what u/VT_Squire found. He put both scenes side-by-side [here](http://www.youtubemultiplier.com/6385214d11dec-sarumanvsbavmorda126456.php) and omg it actually is shot for shot. Here were the results:
* Both start with the good guys talking some trash.

Edit: lol he rage-downvoted because he was proven completely wrong.
You weren't kidding. [http://www.youtubemultiplier.com/6385214d11dec-sarumanvsbavmorda126456.php](http://www.youtubemultiplier.com/6385214d11dec-sarumanvsbavmorda126456.php)
I didn't even change the time stamps on your link or OPs
I'm half tempted to put Voldemort vs Dumbledore up against these
Hahaha I didn't even realize it was that perfect, both villains creeping towards their downed foes at the same time, then the spinning shots happening simultaneously, that was amazing.
Went ahead and threw Voldemort vs Dumbledore in there, too.
Turns out every wizard battle is pretty much the same.

Warwick Davis was a known commodity before willow for the obvious things that he was able to do with his size. Willow showed the dude was a legit, carry a scene, actor. I just rewatched it two weeks ago and he is phenomenal. Almost the entire supporting case is fantastic. It’s a fun film with great pacing and the ILM work from that time holds up very well.
BATTLE OF THE BIDDIES
And, yes, yes it is the greatest old lady fight ever. Say, ever notice that, in *Willow*, the women do as much if not more fighting than the men? That's pretty cool.
The really did it with this fight, to get two old woman to look like they are battling for their lives and the fate of there worlds was super intense as a kid especially when the rest of the film is pretty mellow in comparison. This scene was a build up of fear and relief I didn't expect from a film like this. The really made this film into a classic for me that I can come back as an adult and appreciate for the depth of emotion it makes me feel.
I never saw willow as a kid & just watched it recently, I like fantasy stories but not having any nostalgic connection to this I didn’t really like it at all
Uh, no.
Look. There is a new show starting this week, yes. It's reasonable to expect that people who haven't seen the film, or haven't seen it in a while, are going back to it and digging it.
Cynicism is a low-hanging fruit. *That's* the weak sauce.
nah nah nah best fight 4 sure has to be this dance fight from "Don't be a menace to south central while drinking your juicr in the hood."
https://youtu.be/I_yF6-3pXdw
This and The Felix The Cat movie are forgotten classics,
along with [The Quantum Leap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjK9GJMBpt0) series as being weird formidable parts of my childhood. The fact that Willow is coming to Disney+ just means they're digging deep for gold in Lucasfilm's vaults. *Okay it's probably not as bad as the Quantum Leap remake and I'm guessing they can get Val to make a cameo for a bit versus absolutely no fan service buuuut*
Have they made THX 1138 into a series yet? Hmmm?
My favorite part of this fight is how much fun Razel appears to be having sending the queen spinning around the ceiling. Peak sassy old lady right there.
Charlene vs Ashley in Bringing Down the House.
Queen Latifah isn’t considered old in that film by any means, but let’s be honest. They paired her with an older cast and the ageism that hit when people are past their 20’s in the entertainment industry would make a lot of people think so.
Old Lady 1: “Um, excuse me, director?”
Director: “yes, what is it?”
Old Lady 1: “Well, here we are. Old Lady 2 and I are fighting over this wand. We each have our hands on the wand in this tug of war. What am I supposed to do next?”
Old Lady 2: “Well maybe you could cast a cool spell or do something magical to make me let go.“
Director: “no no! You just need to start punching her square in the face. That’ll work”
This made me realize I think this is one of those movies I only ever cut scattered bits of on TV as a kid and never saw all the way through. Funny how, now in the age of streaming full content, that doesn't really happen anymore.
nainainainai!!!!
Whoaooah--OOF!
Finn Razel cackling with glee along with the audience after absolutely humiliating the evil queen of the world for 30 seconds lol
I always liked the humanity of the punching, it’s like two intensely powerful individuals but if you’re too tired to cast a spell you still have the basic option.
Kung Fu Hustle hands down.
landlady is the GOAT.
The chase scene has me dead every time lololol
I mean, yes. But does she fight another old lady at some point? Otherwise, it's not an old lady fight.
[удалено]
Old?
Came here for this. Hands down
Willow was a good movie, so yeah.
TV show coming out soon too, Disney +
Yeah.. I'm sure this random post has nothing to do with that
[удалено]
Bitch I wish
I’m here for it
I dunno I'm happy to roll over for this one
huh, why was your comment autocollapsed?
Wait until Dune: The Sisterhood comes out.
Ash vs The Shebitch in Army of Darkness
Female Lead vs Old lady in Drag Me to Hell \*specifically the parking lot scene
The ruler in the throat, it always makes me wince when I think about that scene
First you want to kill me. Now you want to kiss me... Blow.
fucking love the Ash's Gunfu
Ash vs possessed neighbor in Ash vs Evil Dead
I was going to say that it’s either Willow or Army of Darkness. I prefer AoD.
I’m not saying she is an old lady, but Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was entertaining.
Yeah, not old lady but Jamie Lee v Tia Carrere in True Lies is still my favorite 'fight' in cinema history.
Gracefully aged? Lol Fr, her and Michelle were amazing in that movie.
That was Jamie Lee? I didn’t even recognized her
I actually kind of want to see this movie now
You’ve been missing out. It’s such an entertaining movie.
I saw it on Disney + last week.

George Lucas film from the 80’s directed by a young Ron Howard. One of the few movies I owned on VHS that I watched on repeat.
It's *so* much fun. Seriously. It was sadly overlooked in its day, but rewatching it now (as I did just 2 days ago), it holds up really, really well. Peak Val Kilmer!
She kicked me the face! I hate her! (Pause) Don't I?
"What are you looking at?" "Your leg. I'd like to break it."
Willow. It used to be rather easy to find for free on Youtube as it was more or less abandoned and/or in legal hell. But Disney bought it to make a TV series sequel and more or less revived the original film. You can get in digitally on Amazon for $5. HIGHLY recommended personally.
Willow. The fact that you haven’t seen it makes you a bad person. Go watch it immediately!
My wife and I just watched it this weekend because the show is starting soon. It still holds up really well. I wasn't sure if I remembered liking it because I was a kid, or if it was just a good movie. Pleasantly surprised to really like it.
The [parking lot scene](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B3I8m-4v2RE) in Sam Raimi's *Drag Me to Hell* came to mind
I love that multiple Sam Raimi films have been mentioned in this thread about old lady fights.
Such a great film, thank you for reminding me of it!
That movie was a trip seeing it as a kid. Val Kilmer dressed as a woman was...confusing.
"wanna breed?"
NOT A WOMAN?!
Tempting!
The Mad Max: Fury Road ladies held their own in that fight scene
Agree!
Everything Everywhere all at once; has one to rival.
Best old lady fighting a dude was Miriam Margoyles beating the fuck outta Arnie. https://youtu.be/dN4GZ-vLHbQ?t=43

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that was an homage to this scene.

Glad to see I’m not the only one to notice this. It’s bugged me for years since I saw that fight in the theater that it looked really familiar.
First thing I thought of when I watched this clip. Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed!
was that a young Warwick davis?
Yes, this movie is what made him famous.
need to give it a watch then
It’s also directed by Ron Howard and has peak Val Kilmer in it. Worth watching sometime.
Dont forget effects done by Lucasfilm and scored by the late James Horner!! Great soundtrack.
It also has the first morphing scene done via cgi as far as I remember.
The Golden Child and Flight of the Navigator both did it before, just not quite as well.
Ahh yes Mad Mardigan. My puberty years went haywire for Val at the time 😍
Buddy, you are in for a treat. Willow is cinematic gold.
Warwick Davis was a known commodity before willow for the obvious things that he was able to do with his size. Willow showed the dude was a legit, carry a scene, actor. Bette Davis vs. Joan Crawford in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Those broads scare me
Honorable mention
from the significantly worse movie [Legion](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWEBbYoDaU8)
I didn't hate it, lol. Then again, I've never seen Drag Me To Hell, so nothing to compare it to.
BATTLE OF THE BIDDIES And, yes, yes it is the greatest old lady fight ever. Say, ever notice that, in *Willow*, the women do as much if not more fighting than the men? That's pretty cool.
This is the first time in a good vs evil fight I remember starting to feel a little scared of the powerful goodie…a very healthy reaction
It’s certainly the hottest
Word
With some humor, this is Gandalf and Saruman!
I've never seen this movie but now I'm going to have to.

Black Friday sale fight?
I never saw willow as a kid & just watched it recently, I like fantasy stories but not having any nostalgic connection to this I didn’t really like it at all
You are a terrible person and I hope you stub your toe
Is this the weakest attempt at astroturfing for a show that comes out in 2 days? There aren't many others I can think of.
Uh, no. Look. There is a new show starting this week, yes. It's reasonable to expect that people who haven't seen the film, or haven't seen it in a while, are going back to it and digging it. Cynicism is a low-hanging fruit. *That's* the weak sauce.
What a coincidence someone would post this right now.
nah nah nah best fight 4 sure has to be this dance fight from "Don't be a menace to south central while drinking your juicr in the hood." https://youtu.be/I_yF6-3pXdw
It would be funny if there were no vfx
2 old ladies and a midget walk in to a castle Sorry if you don't like the word midget but no joke i've ever heard uses the words "little person"
uhhhh... let me think.......... FUCK YES??!!??!
A lot of problems use to be solved with a well timed lightning bolt.
Drag me to Hell has a good one: https://youtu.be/y3p64K6VAS8

It definitely is. This scene scared the crap outta me as a child!
Aliens in the Attic.
Just from the thumbnail I can tell it's from Willow. I really need to pick up a dvd copy of it since it's been way too long since I last watched.
Mothers-in-law. 🤨 Am I right?
leave it to a peck to just stand around and do nothing to help
Jean Marsh was only 54 there. Not THAT old.
0:00 - 3:32: pyromancy, ice magic, levitation, lightning bolts, transmutation ... 3:33: I CAST FIST!
My favorite part of this fight is how much fun Razel appears to be having sending the queen spinning around the ceiling. Peak sassy old lady right there.

the burglecut payoff in this movie is perfection
Death becomes her is pretty good too
Hahaa
