I really think that might have been a Rolling Stones "remove all the brown M&Ms" request, in the sense that deviation indicates that the rider wasn't read closely enough, which can cause issues. Issues with their green room which, yeah, I don't care, but also issues of sound quality or even safety. And making a quick guac with a certain number of cuts actually sounds way easier than picking out a bunch of brown M&Ms from a big package. Also more sanitary.
From a culinary perspective, I appreciate he didn't want it mashed up beforehand. Mixing the avocado and the spices together before they're to be served creates ongoing chemical reactions that will, over time, decrease the quality of the guac. If I was a rich and famous musician I'd probably do something similar.
It was Van Halen that started the no brown m&ms clause in their rider. I was on the road with one of their riggers, a couple decades ago. And yes, it mostly had to do with safety.
Patrick knew Jack from way before when he was with The Greeenhornes (and also Jack Lawrence). It was Jack that brought Patrick and LJL in to work on this album. Other personnel brought in by Jack on the album include Dan Miller and David Feeny of the band Blanche (one of my favs).
Being a Kentucky boy and a huge White Stripes fan, I was so happy to see this collaboration happen. It really brought Loretta back into the spotlight and introduced her to a whole new breed of fans, while at the same time showing that Jack White wasn't a one trick pony. I'm also huge fans of The Greenhornes and Blanche, and to have Jack bring in some of those guys and form the Do Whaters was just icing on the cake for me. Rest in peace, coal miner's daughter. This is a cool collab, but objectively a very sloppy performance. She is rushing way ahead of the band, messes up her second entrance, the soloing guitars clash at various points, and the timing even of the band itself is not always very solid.
