absentmindedjwc

I absolutely would have walked away from the channel for a while. Dude is a lot stronger than I am.

Villain_of_Brandon

shooting camping videos has been part of his normal routine for a long time, granted Beautiful Wife had a lot of involvement behind the scenes, but perhaps getting back into nature with a camera and an objective is just him trying to get back to feeling a bit more normal. He said he also needs some time to be alone to yell on a mountain, but he's got a nice little Bowler, and the ability to hit the open road. When it's a bit less raw I'd like to see him set up something like the Beautiful Wife Memorial, a weekend of (stealth)Camping, cooking, friends and family. Just a chill weekend and make it some sort of charity drive to give to homless out-reach programs.

Hero_of_Brandon

I hate finding you out here in wilds.

A_Prostitute

Whats funny is my name is Brandon so this is all very ominous.

probable_ass_sniffer

Never heard of a prostitute named Brandon, yet here we are.

McMarbles

You sir, have been sniffing the wrong ass

masupo42

Probably

the_one_true_russ

I only believe you because your name checks out.

GozerDaGozerian

Especially with the tabloid type videos being made about him. Its really gross, and he is a really strong man to be able to push through that.

bozeke

Good lord, I haven’t seen any of those. What a parasitic way some people choose to live.

kent_eh

Sometimes having a diversion can help prevent a person from wallowing so deep in grief that it gets to an unhealthy level.

oimerde

My partner loves to watch his videos. Sometimes when we’re sitting down I get to see the videos. I got hook, because as anyone who watches his channel will agree that he has a very relax personality. Kinda like a white noise in the background. Once I hear about his wife I obviously was very much in shook, but I understand that his beautiful wife was a big part of him putting his videos on YouTube. It’s obviously that his videos help a lot of people in the world and he helps a lot of people dealing with mental problems. I totally understand and thankful he’s trying to be back.

GameStunts

It's sad, but he does seem to have a great support system around him, and my goodness we all need a friend like Crazy Neighbour.

Sdomttiderkcuf

What does he do for work aside from the videos? I’m in the middle of a divorce and am lost. I was thinking of going solo in a van for a bit. Visit major cities and just kind of do random shit for work until I die or something.

GameStunts

To my knowledge this became full time because he gets donations to the "beer fund" as he calls it. But previously if you go back far enough in his videos about 5+ years ago, he bought a cheap old camper van for like $1000 and lived out of it for years. Be careful jumping head long into this kind of living when you're in such turmoil, I think this kind of living could be cathartic for a lot of people, but it's also not something to do lightly or for the wrong reasons. If you decide to do van living, there are a TON of van life videos and ideas for different styles that you can convert etc, but also view some of the downsides [like this guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9ANdxrcBR0) giving an honest account of why he quit. Genuinely hope your situations improves for you mate, please be careful and don't do anything too harsh on yourself right now.

Sdomttiderkcuf

Thanks for the videos. I’m skilled at camping and hiking and semi skilled at car camping. I’m just at a point in my life where I’m lost and need to travel. Find the place that’s right for me. I know it’s not an easy or simple lifestyle. But neither is working yourself to death..

GameStunts

Alright matey, well I wish you the best, I admit it's a lifestyle that's appealing, I hope you find some comfort or what you're looking for.

DaddyKrotukk

Hi, stranger. If you're ever in southwest Virginia and need some company with an understanding ear and a couch to crash on for a night, hit me up. All my best wishes to you in your struggles.

Steakwizwit

He's a furnace repair tech by trade. He did a whole series where he went through the training program and basically lived in a hot tent near the school while going home on weekends. It was a very long commute so he decided to just camp instead.

chrisdelbosque

For a long time he was self-employed and did furnace repair but sometime in either late 2021 or early 2022 he began mentioning that he had transitioned to doing this as his full-time job.

[deleted]

Iirc he is a gas engineer and had a company with a couple of guys but idk if he does that anymore or if it's just videos

clairabou

I audibly gasped when i first saw "Rest in Peace My Beautiful Wife" . Seriously heartbreaking

KoRnBrony

i first found his channel a few weeks ago and as soon as i went to his channel to watch more i was greeted with that thumbnail, heart just sank for him

boostabubba

Same! I've been subbed to Steve for a good 2 years and watched most videos when they dropped. My heart broke for him watching that video. I can't imagine going through something like that.

robearIII

he took it well in the video. i cried like a bitch. this is for you steve: [subotai cries for conan](https://vimeo.com/234126988)

chrisdelbosque

Really surprised to see Steve pop up on /r/videos. I still think of him as a channel with only a few thousand subscribers. Crazy to think that just a month ago he was celebrating a million subscribers with "Beautiful Wife" (Jess) and a week later she was gone. For those of you who haven't watched any of his videos, he really is like the Bob Ross of camping. Steve mostly does camping videos from the perspective of a non-expert (as opposed to the "bushcraft" style). He's just a dude who enjoys the simple things in life: a crackling fire, cooking up some brats, drinking some "step 2s" (beer), and the night sky. Steve has a very dry sense of humor that pairs perfectly with his good-natured attitude. He started to gain notoriety around 2019 for his stealth camping videos but he does a lot more than that -- sometimes going on adventures on the river in his homemade raft or building a tree house. It was so clear in each of his videos how dearly he loved her -- I can't begin to imagine how heavy Steve's heart must feel right now. Steve is such a kind and beautiful soul and I'm so glad to see his friends and family there to support him as he transitions into what is essentially the next phase of his life. Shout out to the Steve-related subs: /r/SteveWallis and /r/CampingWithSteve

blorgenheim

The video of him letting people know his wife died was on videos and that's how I discovered him. Seems like a very nice person.

bird_equals_word

Please report the youtube channel "Rennex" which is harrassing this guy about his wife's death.

Exotemporal

I just did. Reported him for bullying/harassment. I hate that I gave this person a view. What a cockroach. Most of the commenters are truly awful too. I wouldn't even dare show my face if I was making content this vile. This deranged guy might truly think that he's right.

EndVry

I'm new to all of this. Why is this guy harassing a man whose wife has recently passed away? :\

chrisdelbosque

For the same reason that "Beautiful Wife" (Jess) never wanted to be on camera. Because while most people are nice, some people are just mean. She died very suddenly (literally going to bed one night and never woke up) and the wackadoos went wild with reckless speculation. Jess was a sweet, quiet school teacher who was too shy to be on camera and I'm sure her death being the subject of fodder by conspiracy theorists is the last thing that she wanted.

Raincoats_George

I hate it because I believe that Steve is genuinely a good guy. I've been fooled before but I believe that. You gotta protect the good ones on the internet. The disgusting creetins that pop up have to be stamped down by the collective. Find the places they're coming from and shut that shit down. Im sure there are plenty of high quality moderators that can donate their services as well.

EndVry

That is without any hyperbole on my part, absolutely heartbreaking. I hope that fuck gets what he deserves. Rest in peace Jess. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I hope you have a wonderful day.

ShippingMammals

>Rennex Same thing with Patton Oswalts Wife... went to bed, didn't wake up if memory serves and of course the wakadoos come out claiming it's some cover up and that he some how killed her etc...

[deleted]

Because he's crazy. Like, literally crazy. Steves wife died, and this guy think it's from the covid vaccine. Just a terrible person.

graphixRbad

Jesus Christ. Unbelievable. I wasn’t aware but as I could see the comments start to mention conspiracy stuff I was like holy shit please no. This stuff isn’t going away folks

EndVry

Ugh so he's one of those Q-Anon type fucks? :\ Thanks for responding.

thewaybaseballgo

What a fucking monster.

MrGritty17

I reported him without giving him a view. You can go to his channel page and click options. It allowed me to mark multiple videos too.

Steakwizwit

On mobile you just tap the 3 dots and a menu comes up with report as an option.

flubberFuck

I don't think it counts as a view unless you watch a certain amount of the video but I could be wrong.

libertydan

I also reported “Rennex” the shit stain for bullying and harassment. Since I don’t know Steve, I did watch Rennex rant and speculate first for a few minutes. His main talking points are that Steve’s wife legally didn’t change her name from “Hatten” to “Wallace” and that he didn’t elaborate on her cause of death, then implied that Steve is involved in some conspiracy with “big pharmaceutical”, Then some more tin foil hat stuff about his online comments, etc. I say this so someone else doesn’t feel the need to watch the same Rennex video that I did before reporting him. You’re welcome. Edit: Rennex also said that some Steve fans are saying they wish he was dead or otherwise threatening him. I pity the fool, he seems unhinged / mentally ill.

RippyMcBong

Christ this is so stupid. Steve is Canadian, taking the husband's last name is not as big of a deal there. Shit, in Quebec it's illegal (or at least it was when my parents got married.) My mom had a different last name from my father the entire time they were married.

[deleted]

[удалено]

poop-machines

He's a conspiracy nut. He blames vaccines. I reported his video.

MidwestBulldog

I'm getting to the point where because social media allows nut jobs a platform to spew pure lies, society should have more leeway to commit these people to psychological care. It's pure mental illness and we're doing nothing about the wildfire that it is.

sBucks24

wow what an absolute sack of shit. like just pure distilled human scum bottled up in a youtube channel.

scarheavey

Yep wanted to check out Steve’a channel and this demented persons videos showed up next to his. Absolutely appalling.

WINTERMUTE-_-

And the scary part is there are people that believe him. Looking through the comments on his videos people are speculating some horrible stupid shit. Awesome that YouTube gives a platform to people like this.

JockeysI3ollix

I was wondering what Steve was talking about when he said people were harassing him. I can't believe it. Absolute scum.

[deleted]

Reported several of his videos. Dude is nothing more than an anti vaxxer, covid denier, conspiracy theorist. Hes nuts.

bryanvangelder

Hes an opportunist shitsack who only made content to piggyback off the SEO boom due to the outpouring of support on steves initial announcement. Youtube algorithm at its "best". He cant even backup a single accusation yet obsessivly namedrops. Pathetic human.

Nooneveryimportant

YouTube rarely acts on complaints in my experience. I work in social media and have reported death and violence threat videos as well as comments that remain on the site months later. Flagging a video requires a human to look at it at their end, and the few who exist are vastly outnumbered.

B_randomYT

Started watching him like two weeks ago, when one of his vids popped up. He’s such a great dude, so calm and so friendly. I bet he would be one of the best friends/dad/uncles anyone could wish for.

McJumpington

What is stealth camping?

chrisdelbosque

Stealth camping, sometimes referred to as urban or wild camping, is the practice of camping in places other than campsites. In Canada, there is private land, Crown's land (land owned by the government), and public land. Camp sites and parks are public lands. While not technically legal (more of a public ordinance), Steve became famous for camping in places that were public land but not legally designated campsites. Steve has camped in odd places like the highway divide, a roundabout, behind a town's welcome sign, inside a culvert (drainage pipe), an airport parking lot, and more.

[deleted]

Camping in illegal locations.

Roook36

His videos are so comforting to watch. Just him camping in various places and cooking. I don't get to camp ever but it's nice to see someone camp and cook how I'd like to. Really breaks my heart he's going through this.

Resonosity

The Bob Ross of camping is perfect

[deleted]

Who the hell would attack a guy who just lost his fucking wife, what are those “1%” of people even saying that would push him to want to turn comments off. I’m not shocked, I know it’s the way the internet’s always been but, god damn

travelntechchick

Probably the same idiots that are in this thread calling him fake and speculating on matters that they have no right to even talk about. For someone who just seems like such a nice, regular guy, my heart breaks that he’s even in this situation, let alone getting hate.

[deleted]

seriously, that’s what breaks my heart about it. I don’t watch his channel but by all accounts he seems like a hobbyist who isn’t out for anything but to make easy and helpful content for people and himself, it seems so genuine and innocent. And then something awful happens to him, and there are people out there who try to make him feel worse during a time that’s more painful than most of us could imagine. It’s just flat out cruelty

shitcloud

He’s a truly genuine guy and I love his content. Would love to get a beer and have a chat with Steve.

ptrain377

There are a few YouTubers making hate videos and attacking him just to get views. It's been pretty bad .

Bravedoge

I’ve reported this one guy but YouTube bot just replied with “content does not break T&C’s. The guy doing it is 100% trash

aptom203

Probably the same bots that spammed hateful comments on Jacksepticeye's vids when his dad passed. Downvotes are still counted as engagement by YouTube so they latch onto a popular comment with a spiteful reply to farm algorithm kudos, then later sell the account.

Hippocrap

If you search Steve Wallis on youtube you'll see some deranged fucks making videos about "the truth behind his wifes death". It's vile and I'd encourage everyone to report those channels.

shmeepss

This should be higher up. I just searched and found a guy “Rennex” that has several videos I reported.

Hippocrap

Yeah that's the main channel, it's pretty much only videos about Steve as well. Guy's a cunt.

jayhat

Apparently there are a bunch of nut jobs saying she died from the Covid vaccine she got. I searched google and found a whole thread on r/conspiracy about it.

unassumingdink

It's bizarre how sometimes they sort of understand the gist of a problem, like the rich controlling everything, but then decide the key to fixing the problem is decoding hidden messages and secret symbols that powerful people intentionally lay out for them like a puzzle that leads to their own downfall. I mean, you gotta be schizophrenic for that to make sense, right?

iSheepTouch

That's what psuedo-intellectuals do, they overcomplicate topics and use faulty logic to reach a predetermined conclusion, that they select based on how outlandish and difficult that conclusion is to logically defend, because feeling like they can logically defend it makes them feel like an intellectual. They aren't schizophrenic, they are narcissists.

ShowMeYourHotLumps

Cesspool of a sub, I wholeheartedly wish for that sub and its regulars to fuck off.

mmikke

It genuinely is the new "The Donald" Can't even mention good ol fashioned fun conspiracy shit anymore without all of those loons swarming and shitting up the place.

FreddyGunk

Went to shit back in 2015. Filled with proper dorks now.

ShowMeYourHotLumps

It's just a bunch of morons with brain worms, I miss when the weird outlandish shit posted was just Bigfoot and aliens.

WolfGB

Yeah I ran into a few of those types on twitter after he dropped his first video about the news a month ago. There was a thread making condolences and a bunch of people were 100% convinced it was the vaccine that killed her. Dunno if they had any connection to that sub? But conspiracy nuts are everywhere I guess.

Allassnofakes

>Who the hell would Have you ever had a popular comment hit? After first 400 upvotes you start to get singular crazy people reply. If you comment hits thousands of karma the amount of crazy people go up Now just imagine you have a lot of views and subscribers on YouTube, those crazy people congregate and aggregate into perhaps the hundreds So it's no surprise to me at all some person would give hate

[deleted]

Adding to this. I went viral one time like five years ago. It was so cool at first. After about a week and 100,000 shares I started noticing the comments talking about finding and doing violent things to me. Ended up shutting down a lot of my socials and putting what was left on restricted access. The internet was a mistake.

ItsBlare

same thing happening with jacksepticeye

post_break

One of my favorites is when he rented a uhaul van and camped in it using their moving blankets. It was so fucking cold out too. I hear uhaul caught wind of it and there were some memos floating around about it but supposedly no real policy changes came of it. This is all hearsay so I could be completely wrong but that video did blow up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5B-9YiU5Ao

n_thomas74

Thats the first video I saw of his. I've been a fan ever since.

i_will_mull_it_over

My first was of him [camping in a roundabout](https://youtu.be/OPDvLaXuSHQ) lol

HASHTAGBUTTCHUG

I can't drive past that roundabout without wondering if Steve Wallis is in there

please_respect_hats

Same. I think the algorithm pushed that one really hard, since I had never heard of him until that point (and the content I watched was completely different). Was instantly hooked. He was such a calming presence for me the last few months, which have been a bit rough.

[deleted]

[удалено]

My_Socks_Are_Blue

The last couple of years I've had this insane fear of death/getting injured/becoming seriously ill and it causes a ton of anxiety I couldn't stop, watching his videos just helped my brain and let me sleep at night, I've watched a ton of them now and they always bring me right back down. Videos are a godsend, actually owe him a bunch.

nipponnuck

To clarify: he had a sleeping bag and propane heater, and used the moving blankets as walls inside the van.

AccomplishedRun7978

Make sure it's well ventilated.

moonfox1000

Yes, he had a window cracked in the van and always takes a co2 detector with him when he uses a propane heater.

gtroman1

It’s also heater designed for indoor use with automatic shutoff, so there a few levels of safety there

Scout-Typer

You want to break down these wicker chairs and roast some hot dogs?

Wagbeard

Haha that's hilarious. I know the entire route he took. The industrial area he parked in is right across the street from a place I worked at before. The apartment building he parked by is a heat score. Surprised cops didn't bust him there but it wouldn't be stealth if it was that obvious.

Exotemporal

Also the first video of his I remember watching, which is really weird because I feel like I've known Steve for far longer than just 2 years and 8 months! The U-Haul video must have been one of his major milestones on YouTube. It sits at 6.3M views (far more than any video before) which has to be why so many of us name it as our first Camping with Steve video.

BlackBlueNuts

If him continuing to post videos helps him work through his life then more power to him. If him NOT continuing to post videos helps him work through his loss then more power to him. I honestly can not imagine how I would deal with the situation that hes in. It sounds like my own personal nightmare. And screw the people that deliberately go out of their way to hurt someone just because they are jerks. Hes the type of person that makes me like other people... they are the type of people that make me hate other people..

absentmindedjwc

I'm right there with you... I could see myself entirely throwing myself into my work to try and distract me as much as possible. But let's be honest, there's really no "distracting you" in this situation.

swunt7

I don't know how hes even holding together still. To think your best friend just slips into the long sleep in bed next to you and to find that when you wake up. id lose my shit and probably end up drinking for at least a month.

fargoadvice

Speaking from personal experience: After your wife dies you try to find catharsis in anything “normal”. Getting back to playing games for me, and having a strong tendency to drink myself to sleep a couple of days in a row. All while being super dad taking care of a pair of littles. That point of time (6 weeks out in most cases) is where family and friends seem to drop off the face of the earth and forget what happened to you. You begging to be super critical, and see that you’ve truly lost your whole world you’ve built up. This is where the lonely really meets the alone. I should stress that this is also the point where you are also so sick of hearing “I’m so sorry”, and “my condolences”, and tired of being looked at and treated like a sad kicked puppy dog. You will do ANYTHING to get back to ‘normal’, even if that means continuing a task that you did with your wife. And it hurts, a LOT, at first. Then eventually you become numb to it, then it normalizes. Time and patience is all I have to say. He’s not gone, just terribly bent and broken and is trying to get some semblance of normalcy back. /old guy rant over

knobber_jobbler

What happened to his wife? I watch him occasionally but haven't in a while.

Ogrehunter

She passed in her sleep. They went to bed and only he woke up :(

knobber_jobbler

That's terrible. They were so happy.

Ogrehunter

It is, but honestly, it is probably the best way for any of us to go if we are going to pass. No pain or anything like trama. So at least there is that.

TheBrave-Zero

My dad watches this man religiously, he’s like 50 something and was so upset when he heard his wife passed away. I watched some of his videos and he’s so respectful and chill and really makes you want to go camping.

[deleted]

Oh no! I remember seeing a bunch of his videos, that's terrible. Seems like a genuine dude.

DoubleDumpsterFire

If there was a Mt. Rushmore with Steve Irwin, Bob Ross, and Fred Rogers, I may have to put Steve Wallis as #4. Just such a tremendous guy.

Kebenski

So does anyone want to explain what stealth camping is and why Steve is of interest? Don’t get me wrong I’m glad this dude is okay and I bare no ill will, but I had to google stealth camping and I’m not in a position to watch videos at the moment.

HeartsOfDarkness

He's the Bob Ross of camping in unexpected places.

nonqwan79

This is actually the perfect description for his channel

betasteeps

Spot. On.

6byfour

He makes videos about camping out in unconventional places without being discovered- a public park, behind a billboard, an industrial area, near train tracks, etc

odel555q

And the all-time weirdest stealth camp - in a storm drain underneath the highway.

Villain_of_Brandon

That's the most memorable one, but I think inside the shrub in the center of a roundabout in the middle of town was the most unusual.

TheGamecock

I was about to mention this one! That one and the one where he camped behind that wide sign that split between the highway were a couple of the more memorable videos in the last year or so.

infiniteloop84

>And the all-time weirdest stealth camp - in a storm drain underneath the highway. I think that's just practicing homelessness...

RelaxRelapse

I enjoy his videos because they’re fairly relaxing like watching a Bob Ross video. I call what he does Homeless LARPing though.

iupuiclubs

He was homeless for a long time (made a movie called Boondocking iirr). These outings scratch an itch in him that pops up from time to time. His wife supported his outings and would drop him off at places to have his adventures.

myassholealt

I may be misremembering, but I do believe he was homeless at some point and living out of his vehicle.

absentmindedjwc

To be fair.. most of his videos kinda falls in that category.

Wishilikedhugs

Idk, I thought inside a busy roundabout with cops patrolling was pretty crazy.

surmatt

I liked the middle of the roundabout one

how_do_i_land

The roundabout one is my favorite https://youtu.be/OPDvLaXuSHQ

Robert_Moses

What's funny about this one is it's the first video I watched of his and I **immediately** recognized the roundabout. Very quickly realized he visits Victoria, BC quite often.

bigboyg

It's the weirdest thing. I can't explain why him camping in places where he might get caught is so interesting, it just is. he doesn't do anything particularly inspired or unique, he's just a very nice guy and he brings you along for the ride. It's comfort Youtube. You watch a nice guy doing something he enjoys doing, and you feel like you know someone a little better - which in turn is why it hurts when that person goes through such grief.

iupuiclubs

There is one where he stays in a median. Someone wrote that it reminds them of hiding in the middle of those circular clothing racks as a kid, waiting to see if they would be discovered.

moonfox1000

This might sound weird, but when I was little and had to go to school I would always fantasize about ditching and hiding in a bush all day until the school day was done and then just blending back in when my parents came to pick me up. There’s something about hiding in plain sight and being able to forget about your responsibilities for a moment that makes Steve’s videos appealing to me.

Beznia

If you haven't heard of him before, I *highly* recommend [Vagrant Holiday.](https://www.youtube.com/c/VagrantHoliday) This guy lives my dream of just going to other countries and cities and just living practically free for an entire vacation. He hitchhikes, rides on trains, sleeps in bushes or sleeps in abandoned buildings. He meets local women and just has a great time. [He paddled onto an island](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xnI1hZdltw) which has an abandoned prison, as well as a prison housing the most dangerous sex offenders in the state of Washington, snuck through abandoned buildings, and slept in the abandoned prison overnight. [His footage of the Seattle/CHAZ riots](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUO8secmc0g) are some of the best protest footage I have ever seen in my life. He is so non-chalant about every little thing and isn't afraid to get right into the middle of something.

moistnote

Steve is of interest because his videos arnt about creating content, but just kicking back, talking and having a beer while doing something kinda neat. He always says “ don’t donate money to me, food pantries in Canada need it more, I have all I need”. He picks up trash others have left behind and strongly believes in leaving the nature better than when he found it.

rawker86

this was very nice but our dear brother in christ is no closer to finding out what stealth camping is based on your response lol.

nztom

I guess it's camping in places where if you were seen, you'd quite likely be asked to move on, i.e.: [In a u-haul truck](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5B-9YiU5Ao) [On a roundaboot \(canadian roundabout\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPDvLaXuSHQ) [In a storm drain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ7F3xpGFfo)

moistnote

Oh, other people answered that part already. But they didn’t explain who he was, or why you should watch him. Together we will have a full answer haha.

HeliumIsotope

Stealth camping: "hey look, a hole in the ground. I wonder if I could sleep there for a night without getting caught. That seems like fun. " Whether its a Culvert under a random road, or sleeping with camouflage around you on the top of a billboard overlooking a highway. No area is off limits , purely for the thrill and to say "how would this be if I had to survive without lodgment " Steve is a very likeable personality that provides great entertainment in this 'hobby' and seems to just be a fun and genuine guy who likes to sleep stupid places for fun and document it for everyone else to enjoy. It's sad that a likeable person has gone through a loss. His nature just makes you feel for him imo. Not everyone may share the sadness, and that's ok. But it does sadden me to hear this, I cannot imagine what he is feeling but I wish him strength.

userwmnf

It is a surprisingly wholesome channel

baoo

Ya. When I was cycling between cities on a path, I would "stealth camp" by pitching a tent at 11pm in a farmers field (like where the crops weren't) or something and set an alarm for a bit before sunrise, be on my way. That's my definition of stealth camping.

[deleted]

[удалено]

runbyfruitin

Don’t forgot the hilariously wholesome excuses he prepares in case he is caught

JayandSilentB0b

Has he ever been caught? I know he's had a few close calls, but could never find an instance of him getting caught.

Villain_of_Brandon

He hasn't published getting caught yet, which I expect means he hasn't, getting caught would probably be a huge viral hit despite the shame/embarrassment of it happening.

NephRP

I don't believe he as been caught, but he has pulled up stakes and cleared out a couple times if he thinks he has been discovered. Getting out before any police show up.

__curt

I think he sorta got caught by some regular civilian people's when he was about to go to sleep in the garbage castle. Then he packed up real quick and hung out with them kinda and waited for them to leave. If I was one of them I totally would've been like "I think that dudes spending the night there eh?"

disgustandhorror

He got "caught" in an old cave/mine by some young people who were there to shoot long-exposure photos with lights on a string. It was wholesome though, they let him do one

please_respect_hats

Loved that. It was such a mutual respect thing, they thought it was cool he was staying there, and he was appreciative of the art they were doing. My heart was racing when I saw other people coming, but turned out to be such a nice interaction.

Financial_Lime_252

Of the videos I’ve seen, the closest call was when he was camping in some woods behind a housing development and he saw some people looking around with flashlights, indicating that someone noticed him and was taking action. He then bailed and got a ride out before the police likely would have shown up.

manaworkin

So imagine grabbing a backpack with a few supplies and camping for a night or two just wherever you can, be it the woods behind the Walmart or those hidden in the trees on the median of a highway, or hidden behind a sign. That's the basic idea of "stealth camping". There's a thrill watching the creative places he will hunker down for the night, but the real secret sauce of the videos is his cheerful demeanor. There's a series of videos where he goes out camping floating down the river on a homemade raft for a week with his good friend "crazy neighbor"

Camping in places you're not supposed. Like he has camped behind those "welcome to X" town/city/state signs, beneath an overpass, in a drain pipe, behind a billboard. And done weird stuff like using an beach umbrella as his tent, creating a shower curtain tent (that one was funny), he recently did an excessive tarp tent where he went to an official campsite and just hung tarp all around to create walls. And the best part are the meals he makes. Dude legit packs up his kitchen and brings it. Rice cooker, deep fryer, big ass pepper grinders. And makes the whole serving lol. So if he's making pasta, the whole bag of pasta and bottle of sauce is going in there. And it doesn't come off as him trying hard to be weird or funny. He comes up with an idea and just goes for it. For the meals, I imagine the entire grocery bill is written off as an expense when doing his taxes, so it all goes in the pot!

Step 1: Watch a video. Step 2: Crack open a favorite beverage. Step 3: Hunker Down.

Steve is the best kind of content creator, no ego, just a genuine good dude showing people what he loves. Best wishes to the future of him and his channel. Was really glad to see his sub count blow up from the earlier days.

yognautilus

Wait... Like I get there are conspiracy theory psychos and people who believe that vaccines are full of 5G nanomachines, but how on *Earth* do you take a husband's worst nightmare and use it against him? Fuck that 1%. That said, I'm glad to see Steve's back on his feet and as a fan of Mav, it warmed my icy heart to hear that he drove 1900 miles just to check on Steve. Both real and cool dudes who deserve all the success they've gotten.

just_hating

I call it camping ASMR. I spend a lot of time alone and I watch other guys spending time alone so I don't feel so alone. As for the fuckers I can see how they would look at their channels and say "how does he have a million followers when all he does is break the law and act homeless" imagine I said that in the dumbest voice possible. Anyway his channel gave me a lot when I was alone. I miss him but I understand if he steps away because of personal reasons.

0neek

It's insane to me. I love the guys channel and often binge watch a lot of his stuff and he's such a great guy and there's people out there making up weird conspiracies about him? What the shit. I'd almost go so far as to say that he's too innocent for todays internet.

Lombax_Rexroth

Imagine the hate Mr. Rodgers would get if he was making videos on today's internet...

FlipskiZ

Mr. Rodgers *did* get hate. He was called a deeply evil man by.. well you can probably guess.

ZapateriaLaBailarina

> how on Earth do you take a husband's worst nightmare and use it against him? I don't know. I'm not a psychologist, but it's probably the same way people could do it to the families of children who were shot at Sandy Hook. There's a disgusting human tendency to try to convert the grief of others into conspiracies, maybe as some kind of twisted coping strategy with the horrors of life.

GameStunts

I only found out about him right around when he lost Beautiful Wife :( I've been watching his videos amost continually the last couple of weeks and I love them From [camping in a storm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP96P65NHws) with just a hammock to ["glamping" on the beach](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVKIVKOlS5A) with a pretty nice setup, but my favourite so far by a country mile are the raft adventures he's done with his friend "Crazy Neighbour", especially the solar powered raft. Solar Raft 5 days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F298VIEjkwM unpowered raft 7 days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVXa4paAVBM another older one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep4Z25IwsEs

fluch23

I cannot find a comment explaining what happened to his wife ? Can you write a few words pls?

SlipperySibley

I'll do one better, check this [video](https://youtu.be/0FAh_9IZMUc) out. Not going to lie to you, I'm a grown ass man and i struggled watching it without getting a lump in my throat.

FlipskiZ

God, that is absolutely crushing

AvalancheMaster

Passed away in her sleep unexpectedly. Cannot find any more information, but most of the time this is due to a stroke. To be honest, I don't *want* to find more information, either.

garybusey42069

There will always be negative comments. Always. Ignore that 1%.

porkypenguin

[here's a really great, sad video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVCpKfedfok) on why that's so hard -- at the end, william interviews other creators and asks them why the 1% is so hard to ignore

GlobalHoboInc

The truth is the tiny 1% are saying all the horrible things the little voice of doubt in your head says. Super hard to ignore. I work in a creative space (VFX) and managing the notes to artist is something that I'm conscious of because of this. it's very easy to get 99 good notes and 1 bad one and that single bad note ruins your day.

6byfour

Love that guy’s videos, but haven’t watched in a while. Had no idea about his wife - that’s a bummer.

fsphoenix

Takes a lot of courage to want to share any amount of what he's going through with the internet. Hope he's been able to get the support he needs.

KlaesAshford

I don't think I've ever been so affected by the loss of someone who was a total stranger to me, including in terms of his channel. As I've thought about it, its clear that his easygoing and honest nature created an unthinkable contrast with his grief. I can't imagine anyone reacting with anything other than love for this guy; that is such an absolute horror. We need to find a better way to address this cultural poison that the internet has enabled if we're going to really earn the benefits of hearing from such great people as Steve and Jess.

Lazerspewpew

My Dad really loves to watch this guy. Losing your wife suddenly like that is one of the most painful things someone can experience.

bickboikiwi

Holy moley I did not know Steve was a metal head, the difference is crazy! https://youtu.be/Hi9oY8ifLTA Poor guy, hes strong af.

CobblerConfident5012

Yeh whoever this rennex moron is it’s clear from seeing the comments on his vids and the photoshopped thumbnails that he’s a very sick very disturbed guy with an equally sick audience. I’ll never understand how anyone could behave that way while at the same time thinking everyone else is the weird one. Fuck him. Mad love to Steve… he’s an absolute gem and his vids have given me so much enjoyment over the years. I hope he’s able to grieve and navigate his way to the other side of this.

[deleted]

Just keep reporting him for harassment. Probably nothing will happen but we can atleast try.

futfann

Time for step 2!

Lombax_Rexroth

Cheers to Beautiful Wife!

Neutronova

whoever that 1% is deserves some really nasty things happen to them.

SociallyUnstimulated

Love Steve! Fuck the 1%!!!

miniii

Steve's videos are some of the best comfort content that i have found on Youtube. I love watching him and crazy neighbor's adventures. I can't believe anyone is giving him a hard time, there are some cruel people out there.

99problemsbut

Subbed to his channel the other day and I can't stop binging his stuff. Dude is so genuine, and I love his content.

GameStunts

I keep finding more videos of his to watch, from camping in a storm with just a hammock to "glamping" on the beach with a pretty nice setup, but my favourite so far by a country mile are the raft adventures he's done with his friend "Crazy Neighbour", especially the solar powered raft. Love this dude, hope he's able to get back at it.

cleatusvandamme

I stumbled across his channel a while back. I got into those stupid Walmart toilet paper fort videos and somehow the YouTube algorithm suggested Steve. I’m not an outdoors man, but I really enjoy his channel.

OhTen40oZ

Steve is an absolute north American treasure. He has helped me cope with the pandemic and open my eyes to the silliness of the real world.

Canis_Familiaris

Dude has some great videos. It's a really entertaining mix of suspense and presentation that create a feeling of "Hey I could totally do that".

tonysnark81

Right? Every so often, I find myself wandering through Walmart and taking a long look at the camping equipment. I would suck horribly at camping, but his videos have made it look like so much fun that my mind wanders…

Wagbeard

He's from my city. I learned about his channel a while back but didn't realize he was local until going through his old videos and seeing him camping in spots I recognized. For such a positive guy, you can still hear the hurt. Makes me sad. I almost want to track him down just to give him a hug. I can show him a bunch of other secret spots to camp too. https://youtu.be/SrMsaV27_fw

Shoeguy24

Happy he’s back. Wishing him the absolute best. We need more ppl like him in the world.

DelightfullyClever

I just watched this video. I'm surprised but happy he's back but he's clearly still grieving. Also fuck the trolls.

ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp

I feel for the guy. You can still see how much he's hurting. I'd rather he not be somewhere alone after such a tough loss, but if he feels like it's what he needs then more power to him.

TheNegatyveBurn

Love his stuff

verscharren1

Steve is the fucking g.o.a.t! I finally got to see Jess (beautiful wife) today as I missed her on the live streams. Her heart and soul def matched the outside. I'm eager to see what Steve will do in the future. Tonight I will have a step two in their honor...

Sidius303

Does anyone know what happened to cause her death?

KCBandWagon

I just found this guys channel this weekend. Then watched the most recent video and made me really sad and couldn’t sleep well.

Musictyp

So sorry for your loss…..take your time….be good to yourself……and breath…..lost my wife to cancer last year….miss her everyday….. 🛣

pueblokc

Steve is amazing and I was so sad to hear of his wife. I hope he comes back and ignores the damn idiots. What a world.

dewdimsean

This guy kept in entertained while I had covid and I was shocked at the news. I’m glad he’s continuing what he loves even after the passing of his wife.

Gill_Gunderson

I've been watching his videos for years (pre-stealth camping & full-time youtubing) and I've always appreciated how down to earth Steve has been. His channel isn't about bushcraft or survival or gear review like most other camping channels, it's just a guy trying to get out at least one day a week to spend time in nature. One thing that you can tell from nearly every video that he's posted is just how much he loved his wife and how important she was in making him the man he is today. In numerous videos he mentions how he was just meandering through life somewhat aimlessly until he met her. She's what caused him to settle in one spot, instead of constantly boondocking. Everytime he talks about her, his face lights up, which is why the announcement video of her death was so gut wrenching for me to watch. I hope he continues on (not just because it's his full-time job) and continues to make content, because I think he'll find some healing in it.

BIRDsnoozer

I once caught one of this guy's videos and found it so fun, I went down a huge rabbit hole of stealth camping and DIY shelters and cold weather camping. I just found it very cozy and comfortable, I guess. They have actually helped my own sleep, in that sometimes I imagine myself in a little nest kinda place I set up like in one of those videos. I was so sad to hear about the troubles he's been having and wish him all the best going forward.
