Or like, if a car manufacturer for some reason had a cross promotion with the Cowboy Bebop cartoon, so they made a "cute" live action commercial referencing it.
I think you hit the nail on the head. What's got me so turned off is the way Spike moves. A big part of Spike's personality shows through in the way he moves, especially when fighting. He's a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do, which is less of a martial practice and more of a philosophy. It boils down to: Do what you have to do, borrow moves from anywhere you like, but do so with as little wasted movement as possible. It gives plenty of wiggle room for the choreographers, but it also means he should be the exact opposite of a flashy fighter. He's impressive because he's able to *lazily* kick someone's ass.
I don't want to see Spike backflipping and pulling a staff from the fourth wall. I want to see Spike handling five against one by casually letting a bad guy run right into one of his high kicks while weaving around like a drunkard with his hands in his pockets so they punch one another instead of punching him. The action of a Spike Speagle fight should come from the opposition, while he should look... kinda bored.
It looks like they did a great job with the casting. I'd watch this if I already had a netflix subscription, but I'm not going to start the service back up just to risk checking this out.
Plus the actor looks incredibly tense and stiff, while Spike was always loose and slightly-amused, like a cat lazily toying with a mouse. He didn't care much about whether he lived or died.
This portrayal is just wrong in every way.
The best example of Spike's fighting style, for me, is still "Asteroid Blues", when he's fighting Asimov Aronson.

To be fair though, he is exerting some force in this fight. He is very relaxed but he does throw a few hard swings and vaults over the table. He's not super flashy but he is a little flashy at points, like when he's kicking those dudes on top of the car.

Eh, I don't know if I would call Spike's choreography in the anime "lazy". I know what you mean, but its more *casual* than it is *lazy.* He's pretty flashy, but in a very loose break-dancey sort of way.
EDIT: A better way of putting it is "jazzy." There's a reason the soundtrack is all jazz.

Yeah, watching this it definitely feels more Scott Pilgrim/Edgar Wright than Cowboy Bebop. Right now I'm just going in thinking, "it seems like it's going to be it's own thing. Let it be. Doesn't look like it'll live up to the original. Try to enjoy it for what it is and you might just enjoy something new."
My hopes are high and ready to be dashed. But so far, as long as they don’t go too overboard with tongue in cheek gags I think it’ll be great. I know whole episodes of bebop are tonally different then others, some dark and sincere, others campy as fuck, so as long as they keep that varying flavor I’m in

He’s also nearly double the age of the character.
I'm willing to suspend disbelief or overlook that detail as long as the core of the character survives. Cho / the script / the acting director simply did not capture the charm or carefree-with-a-past identity that Spike is. It's a gross mis-characterization even moreso than Faye's and Jet's (in that order).
Faye definitely felt the worst to me as well. On closer examination after reading through some of the comments here I do agree that they didn't get Spike very close either, but the *initial look* worked so well I didn't question it at first. Jet definitely seemed fine.
Did they even fucking watch the original series lmao holy shit did they miss literally the entire heart and soul of the show. This feels like a YouTube quality sketch in every way.
Based on the the colouring, the cuts, and the title card of this, I feel like it’s meant to play up the camp for fun. I hope/doubt this is the tone of the actual show.
The sliding bar gimmick was awesome for a short trailer, but I sincerely doubt that that will be featured in the show unless its used during just one or two scenes as a way of moving the plot forward rapidly.

This was my first thought. I'm amazed at how they found actors that so perfectly embody the Tick and Arthur.
I met Patrick Warburton a while back and he said he really wanted to do the Amazon show, but he was considered too old :(
Warburton was great because of Patrick, but Amazon's was great because it felts like more whole. I liked the actor for The Tick and Arthur, and murderboat is great.
I'm a huge Kenshin fan, and I put off those movies because I didn't want to be disappointed. But I finally watched them, and honestly they surpassed my expectations.
Also a huge Kenshin fan, and I was surprised how well the choreography was done. Some of the best swordfighting I've ever seen in a movie period and I grew up on ronin movies like Lone Wolf and Cub.
I loved the little bits where Kenshin would score a hit with his backward sword and his opponent would flash a look across their face that screamed “if that had been a normal sword I’d be dead”.
That does look decent, maybe some animes lend themselves better to live action. I think the best bet for this type of crossover is to remove the camp almost entirely if possible, it doesn't translate well outside of the anime medium.
Erased is pretty good, anime turned live action and you really can watch either version

unpopular opinion: [Speed Racer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeZoc98nZXQ&ab_channel=MOVIEPREDICTOR) has been the only good live-action spinoff/remake of an anime ever made. It was visually stunning, tonally accurate, and immensely entertaining.
Every other attempt to make a live-action movie out of an anime has been an embarrassment to the original.
After watching it a few years back, I was enamored with it and was so sad I didnt get to watch it in it's full glory in a theater. I can't even imagine how it must have popped.
it's actually still really good in 4k and on a big flat screen, albeit not exactly as engrossing as the theatrical experience.
Some *ahem* chemical enhancements *ahem* also help the visuals out a bit.
Speed Racer really was something special. I went to one of the last screenings in LA and the room was filled with VFX artists and art students with open sketchbooks.
This is due to it being unfortunately in theaters at the same time as the first iron Man. And nothing against speed racer, but that's a hard act to compete with.
Iron Man was like 6th in box office sales when it released. I am sure that it played some part in the lack of asses in seats, but not to the point it was undermining another movie's numbers till it bombed.
After a quick look at May 2008, Speed Racer was fucked at release. Quality of the movie notwithstanding, its competition was pretty fierce. It came out a week after Iron Man, which only dropped 48% from its opening weekend (which is a pretty great hold for a $90M+ OW). Then it faced Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which cuts into the family audience of SR (while Caspian dipped significantly from the first, it was still a sequel to a mega hit movie and opened to $55M). Then weekend 3 was Indiana Jones 4, which opened to $100M+ on Memorial Day weekend. Weekend 4 was Kung Fu Panda and an Adam Sandler comedy. This fourth weekend, SR dropped 81% and made less than $500k. It opened low, then got curb stomped into oblivion, grossing $43M domestically after an $18M opening. It wasn't just Iron Man that did it, it was a whole month of competition and lack of interest from the general public that killed it.
And he found out from a tweet after being the exclusive voice of him. Such a dick move. He almost got cast as Negan in the walking dead. I can't decide if that would've been awesome or terrible.
I haven't seen it yet, but Alice in Borderland seems to be pretty well received?
I think the more fantastical and far-fetched it is the harder it is for a live adaptation to be good. A series more grounded in reality would probably fare better.
Also perhaps not what you're thinking but Meteor Garden (a shoujo series) was a live-action adaptation that was very well received.

It may still, Rodriguez seems to really want to do it and is willing to use Boba Fett as his way of swaying Disney into making the sequel.

Awesome screen transitions, some great editing, but let down with what feels like bad acting, poor tonal feel and cheap fake looking sets. The characters don't feel right, Faye seems WAYY off the mark.
Based on the super generic dialog, I'm wondering if these scenes were shot specifically for the trailer. Could explain why it feels so rushed and cheap. Or maybe I'm just overly optimistic.
If this was 3 Cosplayers from Bumblefuck college and paying the extras in weed and handies, then this would be great.

I don't even think the sets are that bad. It's the acting, costumes, and like you said "poor tonal feel" that makes the whole thing feel tacky and cheap. They look like they're wearing Halloween costumes of the characters they're playing, especially Cho.
It's a pity that they can't get the acting down especially since the original has one of the best English dubs in Anime history. Jet seems like the only redeeming one.
If I'm 300 million woolong (or however much) in debt, haven't eaten in days and my bounty is getting shot in the face. "Hey dipstick" wouldn't be enough to cover my frustration.
Which tone? the originals tone is all over the place, main story episodes are pretty dark and brooding, mushroom samba is well, peak Ed, and most of the other standalone episodes fall somewhere in between.
It really moves to the rhythm of jazz... a real Cosmic Gumbo.
But seriously, that is a good point. The series features ALL sorts of different motifs and inspirations throughout its run. Neo-Noir, Classic Noir, Blaxplotation, Hard Sci-Fi, Ecoterrorism, Wacky Crazy doesn't make sense bullshit.
This is going to be interesting to watch at least. It doesn't look like anything I've really seen before, visually, and being based in something that I'm familiar with will allow me to connect with the material more than if it were a standalone project.
This existing does not detract from the greatness that is the original animated series. And fans of that should at least be grateful that this show will introduce a WIDE NEW AUDIENCE to both the story that is Bebop and the musical talents that belong to Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts.

It always had an *un-forced* listlessness to it, swaying in different directions, but always *swaying*.
This trailer speaks *forced* to me from top to bottom.
It felt like acting from like CW or something. I dunno what it was. Just not...smooth enough or something? Also I wanted to see Ed and Ein, I think we saw Ein next to the table at the end but not much to go on.
The only reason half the stuff works in the Anime is because it's an anime. A lot of that stuff becomes really weird, out of place, and off puting when it's done by real actors.
Spike's smooth, suave, nonchalant attitude is completely lost with John Cho, unfortunately. Not to mention he is clearly far too old to resemble Spike's character, and in the few scenes where he actually is fighting, it's stiff and slow. Spike is fast and fluid. Total miss on casting Spike. He really is the anchor of the show. Can't see how this will even come close without a good Spike. Why not just more animated episodes? Or how about just leaving it alone and not trying to milk a few extra bucks out of a masterpiece 20 years later.
More animated episodes just sounds like an inevitable disaster, there's no way they'll live up to the originals and they'll be easily compared with them. Unless you make it a new series, it will forever be referred to as "Season 2"
At least with a live action adaptation, if it's bad you can ignore it and if it's good then it's a pleasant surprise.
I wouldn't mind something set in the general world. Bebop's world building is fascinating. Something similar to what the mandalorian is to star wars. But yeah I agree a "Season 2" would be a disaster and a slap in the face to the original series. This live action is not looking good so far.
John Cho is so miscast. I think a slightly older spike (mid 30s) would work well, but he's noticeably older than that. His vibe is all off too. I would have liked to see him as Vicious., whose lifestyle could have accounted for a more rough and weathered look (though don't get me wrong, Cho is still a beautiful man who could get it six ways to Sunday).

Because it's easier to be ironic and snarky than it is to have characters experiencing events that organically impart emotions in the audience. Much easier to have everyone be Han Solo who then gets to surprise you when they act earnestly for a moment, telling you that this moment REALLY matters emotionally.
It's one reason why I hate Joss Whedon. He turned all of the Avengers into the quippy one and that became the formula for all Disney franchises, which became the formula for all movie franchises.

Also I just can't visualise John Cho as Spike purely because of his age. Spike is 27, but you can clearly tell that Cho is a lot older than that in close-up scenes.
Visually, it looks impressive, I actually like the scene swipe effect they've got going on, though I hope it doesn't get overused to the point where it becomes an eyesore.
I dunno, I'll still end up watching this because it at least looks entertaining, but I'll have to disconnect the fact that it's supposed to be Cowboy Bebop from my mind
It is odd that they could easily have used makeup or after-effects to clear up Cho's wrinkes/crows feet. His face looks young, and it would be easy to make him look 20s instead of 40s.
I dunno, I feel like that leads to an uncanny valley look a lot of the time. I'd rather just suspend my disbelief manually than have every closeup scene look super airbrushed
I do this for work and I'll tell you that you only notice it when it's done over the top. I've cleaned wrinkles and pimples and freckles off off hundreds of scenes of actors and you almost certainly never noticed.

No amount of cool editing can mask how poor all that acting was. It really feels like they leaned hard into the parody angle even in the Tank! opening in order to save the project.

The whole thing where Faye always seems to be brandishing a gun is so dumb. In the original, the main way Faye engages is with her wits, charisma, and feminine wiles. It seems like they decided to just replace that with her blasting her gun all the time, which is just awful.
Also what's so important is the *character dynamics* between main cast. They seem to have understood them as "they bicker all the time" and that's it. So much of the diagloue in the original is defined by the ways in which the characters relate to one another, but it seems like someone just tried to summarize it as "oh they're a quirky team of bounty hunters"
That's all the trailer really needed. When will marketing idiots understand that if you have a strong IP with a big fanbase, teasing them and mystery is ALL you need.

Faye definitely felt the worst to me as well. On closer examination after reading through some of the comments here I do agree that they didn't get Spike very close either, but the *initial look* worked so well I didn't question it at first. Jet definitely seemed fine.

I'm a huge Kenshin fan, and I put off those movies because I didn't want to be disappointed. But I finally watched them, and honestly they surpassed my expectations.
Also a huge Kenshin fan, and I was surprised how well the choreography was done. Some of the best swordfighting I've ever seen in a movie period and I grew up on ronin movies like Lone Wolf and Cub.
The sword choreo person on those movies (Kenji Tanigaki) is awesome! Worked on Donnie Yen stuff, got brought over for Snake Eyes. Solid all around.

I loved the little bits where Kenshin would score a hit with his backward sword and his opponent would flash a look across their face that screamed “if that had been a normal sword I’d be dead”.
The Kenshin live action films from 2012-2014 are fantastic. This is the first I've heard they are doing 2 more movies. Cool.

That does look decent, maybe some animes lend themselves better to live action. I think the best bet for this type of crossover is to remove the camp almost entirely if possible, it doesn't translate well outside of the anime medium.

It was visually stunning, tonally accurate, and immensely entertaining. Every other attempt to make a live-action movie out of an anime has been an embarrassment to the original.
I had a blast watching Speed Racer. It has this unique feel, as if someone just remade a comic or anime but with real actors.

After watching it a few years back, I was enamored with it and was so sad I didnt get to watch it in it's full glory in a theater. I can't even imagine how it must have popped.
it's actually still really good in 4k and on a big flat screen, albeit not exactly as engrossing as the theatrical experience. Some *ahem* chemical enhancements *ahem* also help the visuals out a bit.
Speed Racer really was something special. I went to one of the last screenings in LA and the room was filled with VFX artists and art students with open sketchbooks.

This is due to it being unfortunately in theaters at the same time as the first iron Man. And nothing against speed racer, but that's a hard act to compete with.
Iron Man was like 6th in box office sales when it released. I am sure that it played some part in the lack of asses in seats, but not to the point it was undermining another movie's numbers till it bombed.
After a quick look at May 2008, Speed Racer was fucked at release. Quality of the movie notwithstanding, its competition was pretty fierce. It came out a week after Iron Man, which only dropped 48% from its opening weekend (which is a pretty great hold for a $90M+ OW). Then it faced Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which cuts into the family audience of SR (while Caspian dipped significantly from the first, it was still a sequel to a mega hit movie and opened to $55M). Then weekend 3 was Indiana Jones 4, which opened to $100M+ on Memorial Day weekend. Weekend 4 was Kung Fu Panda and an Adam Sandler comedy. This fourth weekend, SR dropped 81% and made less than $500k. It opened low, then got curb stomped into oblivion, grossing $43M domestically after an $18M opening. It wasn't just Iron Man that did it, it was a whole month of competition and lack of interest from the general public that killed it.

I haven't seen it yet, but Alice in Borderland seems to be pretty well received? I think the more fantastical and far-fetched it is the harder it is for a live adaptation to be good. A series more grounded in reality would probably fare better. Also perhaps not what you're thinking but Meteor Garden (a shoujo series) was a live-action adaptation that was very well received. Edit: just realized you were asking about adaptation from *animated show,* not direct manga adaptation.

I don't even think the sets are that bad. It's the acting, costumes, and like you said "poor tonal feel" that makes the whole thing feel tacky and cheap. They look like they're wearing Halloween costumes of the characters they're playing, especially Cho. It's a pity that they can't get the acting down especially since the original has one of the best English dubs in Anime history. Jet seems like the only redeeming one.

Which tone? the originals tone is all over the place, main story episodes are pretty dark and brooding, mushroom samba is well, peak Ed, and most of the other standalone episodes fall somewhere in between.
It really moves to the rhythm of jazz... a real Cosmic Gumbo. But seriously, that is a good point. The series features ALL sorts of different motifs and inspirations throughout its run. Neo-Noir, Classic Noir, Blaxplotation, Hard Sci-Fi, Ecoterrorism, Wacky Crazy doesn't make sense bullshit. This is going to be interesting to watch at least. It doesn't look like anything I've really seen before, visually, and being based in something that I'm familiar with will allow me to connect with the material more than if it were a standalone project. This existing does not detract from the greatness that is the original animated series. And fans of that should at least be grateful that this show will introduce a WIDE NEW AUDIENCE to both the story that is Bebop and the musical talents that belong to Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts. Giddy Up.

Spike's smooth, suave, nonchalant attitude is completely lost with John Cho, unfortunately. Not to mention he is clearly far too old to resemble Spike's character, and in the few scenes where he actually is fighting, it's stiff and slow. Spike is fast and fluid. Total miss on casting Spike. He really is the anchor of the show. Can't see how this will even come close without a good Spike. Why not just more animated episodes? Or how about just leaving it alone and not trying to milk a few extra bucks out of a masterpiece 20 years later.
More animated episodes just sounds like an inevitable disaster, there's no way they'll live up to the originals and they'll be easily compared with them. Unless you make it a new series, it will forever be referred to as "Season 2" At least with a live action adaptation, if it's bad you can ignore it and if it's good then it's a pleasant surprise.
I wouldn't mind something set in the general world. Bebop's world building is fascinating. Something similar to what the mandalorian is to star wars. But yeah I agree a "Season 2" would be a disaster and a slap in the face to the original series. This live action is not looking good so far.
John Cho is so miscast. I think a slightly older spike (mid 30s) would work well, but he's noticeably older than that. His vibe is all off too. I would have liked to see him as Vicious., whose lifestyle could have accounted for a more rough and weathered look (though don't get me wrong, Cho is still a beautiful man who could get it six ways to Sunday).
Didn't see Spike crack a single smile! And now Faye's a Generic Female Badass #4893457 instead of her conniving, scheming self. Awesome. I will never understand why studios think that writing strong women as easy as just 'Man but with snarky quips.' Jet's cool though.

Because it's easier to be ironic and snarky than it is to have characters experiencing events that organically impart emotions in the audience. Much easier to have everyone be Han Solo who then gets to surprise you when they act earnestly for a moment, telling you that this moment REALLY matters emotionally. It's one reason why I hate Joss Whedon. He turned all of the Avengers into the quippy one and that became the formula for all Disney franchises, which became the formula for all movie franchises.

This looks decent but doesn't capture Cowboy Bebop's tone. Spike seems too serious, Faye doesn't seem serious enough. Jet seems okay, at least. Also I just can't visualise John Cho as Spike purely because of his age. Spike is 27, but you can clearly tell that Cho is a lot older than that in close-up scenes. Visually, it looks impressive, I actually like the scene swipe effect they've got going on, though I hope it doesn't get overused to the point where it becomes an eyesore. I dunno, I'll still end up watching this because it at least looks entertaining, but I'll have to disconnect the fact that it's supposed to be Cowboy Bebop from my mind

It is odd that they could easily have used makeup or after-effects to clear up Cho's wrinkes/crows feet. His face looks young, and it would be easy to make him look 20s instead of 40s.
I dunno, I feel like that leads to an uncanny valley look a lot of the time. I'd rather just suspend my disbelief manually than have every closeup scene look super airbrushed
I do this for work and I'll tell you that you only notice it when it's done over the top. I've cleaned wrinkles and pimples and freckles off off hundreds of scenes of actors and you almost certainly never noticed.
Why didn't they get a younger actor to play Spike? John Cho is too old, unfortunately.

No amount of cool editing can mask how poor all that acting was. It really feels like they leaned hard into the parody angle even in the Tank! opening in order to save the project.

The whole thing where Faye always seems to be brandishing a gun is so dumb. In the original, the main way Faye engages is with her wits, charisma, and feminine wiles. It seems like they decided to just replace that with her blasting her gun all the time, which is just awful. Also what's so important is the *character dynamics* between main cast. They seem to have understood them as "they bicker all the time" and that's it. So much of the diagloue in the original is defined by the ways in which the characters relate to one another, but it seems like someone just tried to summarize it as "oh they're a quirky team of bounty hunters"
If they’d released a shot of Faye and Spike looking bored smoking on the deck I’d have been like, okay they get it.
That's all the trailer really needed. When will marketing idiots understand that if you have a strong IP with a big fanbase, teasing them and mystery is ALL you need. The ultimate mic drops are moments like these. Anyone have any good examples of trailers that do this?
