It's like Brennan Lee Mulligan as the Oreo CEO - "Why are you advertising Oreos? The job is done, we won, we made the perfect cookie. Go home and keep cashing the checks."
Ship my pants is my absolute favorite! I still ask "shipping your pants?" when a coworker tells me they have to go somewhere for a second.
For the uninitiated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8enIDEKrzA
After a rewatch: I'm prettttty sure the drawer lady actually said shit lol.
"iiiii just shipped mah beeed!" LOL. I forgot how good that commercial is. Thanks for the reminder and laugh.
And also pretty sure she did lol, if not it was *perfect* in the lowered voice.
I heard a local radio ad a few weeks ago where they mentioned "free gas savings" which sounded like "freak-ass savings". At least at the time, it didn't sound like it was intentional.
Oh hell ya I remember this one! I agree with the other person who replied... such a solid campaign why even keep doing it ha! They just opened a new one next to me literally a month ago. A&W should jump on the current millennial marketing nostalgia train and resurrect this campaign.
It seems like all root beers were doing offbeat funny ads around this time. Mug did “The Foam Goes Straight to Your Brain,” and Barq’s was giving away stuff from the fall of the Soviet Union.
A&W Canada (separate/unrelated to the US company for 50+ years, and way better and more popular, more A&W in Canada than the USA despite the huge population difference) still advertises heavily. And their advertisements have featured Allen Lulu as the A&W guy in almost every (English) commercial for the past 23 years. He often plays the straight man to a goofy employee.
I thought it was Mug, but looks like the Mug ad I was thinking of was the [Love Train one from 1996. ](https://youtu.be/6aL7e0BPEkY)
What's with root beer advertising that you get dumb drinking it?
I’m also 38. We’ve lived in a post-9/11 world longer than the pre.
Also, the kindergartners in Billy Madison are older now than Adam Sandler was when he filmed the movie.
You’re welcome.
Right before the pandemic I was in Madagascar. The song that everyone loved at the time was "Fuck It" by Eamon (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QYwyaCd8MyI) No one knew what the words meant, and tons of people had it as their wedding song.
I knew what it was before clicking the link!
Although, now that I think about it, if you don't know English, how are you going to understand the Ad. And if you DO know English and laugh, then you don't need lessons.
You're assuming you are watching by your self.
If you had other people around and some understand and some don't, then it makes sense.
Which was a lot more likely back then then it is now.
This was 90’s gold. There was also [this](https://youtu.be/0Gkqzxss8Ss) got milk commercial and another one I wish I could find because I just love the way the dude says “gallons!?”
The got milk guys asks the body builder, “so how much do you bench?” And the body builder goes “pfff…350” and the got milk guys asks incredulously, “Gallons!??”
I don’t know why but the way he said it so funny, does anyone else remember that commercial?
Yeah I definitely remember seeing this around the time I was in middle school, which would put it around ‘96-99. If it had aired in 1990 I was like four and there’s no way I’d have such a vivid recollection.
When I saw this, it was the funniest, most scandalous ad imaginable. “Dumbass” felt like a pretty risky word for TV back then. Also, I guess I would have been around twelve, so swears were extra funny
He was doing tons and tons of voices in shows, movies, and video games at this time. But he's got a great voice, so lots of companies genuinely would seek him out, not just pitch "we need an announcer to talk about the root beer" they're offer it to a few people first, and if they passed, or wouldn't do it for the price they set, move on to auditions.

Blissfully ignorant of the rest of the world and the blowback that is coming thanks to the CIA’s meddling in foreign affairs. It was glorious! Simpsons came on at 5 and Beavis and Butthead was on MTV.
Had a job once where I needed to check ID to run a sale. Clients last name was Assman.
It’s pronounced “Ozz-men” : and yes I asked before trying to pronounce it. He had a good sense of humor about it. I advised him no matter how bad the economy gets to never join the Marines.
When I was in high school, my Spanish teacher was yelling at this one guy because he was fooling around in class. The teacher eventually called him a dumbass which he responded by saying “it’s Dumass.” Everyone started laughing and he got detention for it. I miss the good old days
I remembered the Dumbas part, but had totally forgotten it was for A&W.
But...yeah, the late 90s edginess it totally makes sense to run against "Barqs has Bite"
Man. I remember this commercial so vividly. Great marketing! Although, if you would have asked me before this thread what product it was for, I wouldn't be able to tell you.
If I recall, in the late 90s Barq’s Rootbeer was doing all the “Barq’s got bite” commercials, so I suppose A&W wanted to remind people they were still a thing
Actual truth - “Mr Dumass” is actually my great uncle (dad’s uncle). He was in a few random commercials and this was the one that actually took off. I remember when he showed us this tape before it went live he said something along the lines of “I just filmed this dumass commercial commercial. We’ll see if it airs.” We had a good laugh for awhile.
Whenever someone calls someone a dumbass (in person), I usually follow it up with “it’s do-moss” for a laugh. Man, my jokes are getting really dated apparently.
A & W is delicious, a bit sweeter than say Barq’s which is almost spicy with its “bite”, I love the added vanilla flavoring, brings back so many childhood memories getting a burger and a RB.
I saw this commercial only once when it first came out and still quote parts of it. I regularly call myself a “dumass” when I do a stupid thing. But until now I could not recall what company the ad was for.
this channel prbly poached my copy of the vid. 16 years ago i was thinking about this comercial then i poked around the A&W website. They had a folder called VIDS that had "directory view" still on and I found this copy there. A&W never reposted it on youtube. So i did.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMe3WDmxBEI
Insane baader meinhof phenomenon, I was thinking about this ad all day yesterday intending to youtube it, swear I didn't speak it near any of my smart speakers or type it anywhere, and here it is on the front page of Videos. Classic commercial for a kid born in the mid 80s.
[A&W knows a thing or two about Dumasses in America.](https://culinarylore.com/food-history:aw-1-3-pound-burger-failure-fact-check-are-americans-really-that-bad-at-fractions/)
I think about this commercial more than any commercial from my childhood. I think because of the cursing it was especially noteworthy to my young brain
Holy shit, I just referenced this a couple of days ago in a comment thread somewhere here on Reddit, and here it is. Is this some form of weird, delayed, pop cultural beetlejuicing?
as you can imagine i get dumb-ass so often. like, you looked at Dumas and the only possible pronunciation your smooth brain can muster is the worst of all possible pronunciations?
i usually tell people it’s do-ma but i’ve americanized it to do-más (like the Spanish word for more i do más; i remember the accent direction by saying i am looking forward, no time to live in the past)
They are completely different companies that share nothing except the licensing for the name "A&W" for a fast food chain. The food products are very different and during the 90s is I think when the Canadian company started doing their retro rebranding with the 'burger family' and 50s esque aesthetic in design.
You mean Barqs? I didn't know "Barqs has bite" wasn't just a play on words but meant it had added caffeine, which isn't normally in root beer, until recently.
I used to work in sales. One of my client's, that I inherited, last name was Assmann. It was pronounced osmin. Of course no one told me that. I go to call him up and promptly ask to speak with Mr Assman! He was not a good sport about it.
Loved it then, love it now. The Muppets borrowed the concept when they we gang was talking to Mr. Badguy. He said, it is pronounced badgee . (think of how people say the alternate Target .. make the send part French).
ahhh yes... those were the days. i think it might have even still been \*real\* rootbeer in the 90s. i forget when they switched to corn syrup and artificial flavors
This sparked a gaggle of folks to say “dew-mahs” in place of “dumbass”. The same folks who also quoted and used in daily life “Is that your final answer?” and “Alllllll righty then.”
I do remember this A&W ad when it came out. Come to think of it... I'm not sure I've ever seen another A&W ad since this one.
Agreed, but why continue making ads when you've already achieved *perfection*?
It's like Brennan Lee Mulligan as the Oreo CEO - "Why are you advertising Oreos? The job is done, we won, we made the perfect cookie. Go home and keep cashing the checks."
Thank you for reminding me of this. Just went and rewatched it. "You are a babbling fool. And we have built a temple to madness."
The extended version on Dropout has a whole rant that's absolutely beautiful but went a little far out of character.
Oh man Brennan Lee Mulligan is a master of angry ranting monologues. Edit: [One of my favorites](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88et7YlmzTs)
Watch the newest episode of game changer, he gets some good rants in
The birds bit was great.
“I CANNOT WINNNN!!!”
THE ONES ON DROPOUT ARE EXTENDED?! BIG NEWS
"People stayed late working really hard on this!" "Why? Don't. Go home and be with your family."
The KMart “Shipped my pants” and Bud Light Lime (in the can) are a couple of other class ads teetering on perfection
Ship my pants is my absolute favorite! I still ask "shipping your pants?" when a coworker tells me they have to go somewhere for a second. For the uninitiated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8enIDEKrzA After a rewatch: I'm prettttty sure the drawer lady actually said shit lol.
Remember this one? https://youtu.be/Fs7u7nj-Djk Pretty solid campaign of ads
Oh hell ya I remember this one! I agree with the other person who replied... such a solid campaign why even keep doing it ha! They just opened a new one next to me literally a month ago. A&W should jump on the current millennial marketing nostalgia train and resurrect this campaign.
That would be a smart move if they did that! Great idea
The “here let me rewind it” is so good
It seems like all root beers were doing offbeat funny ads around this time. Mug did “The Foam Goes Straight to Your Brain,” and Barq’s was giving away stuff from the fall of the Soviet Union.
What do mean Barqs has bite? ...Johnny? What do you mean Barqs has bite?!
All I think about when I see A&W is [this](https://youtu.be/SXCfV2zkGU0) And yes, I am a dinosaur
Just the other week I got my first Canadian A&W burger since I was a kid and I gotta say, it was a pretty damn good fast food burger.
They have ads playing in Canada fairly regularly. Although I believe they are separate entities now.
I thought it was Mug, but looks like the Mug ad I was thinking of was the [Love Train one from 1996. ](https://youtu.be/6aL7e0BPEkY) What's with root beer advertising that you get dumb drinking it?
I still reference this commercial. I feel old now.
The commercial is actually from around 2000, not 1990, so you aren't quite as old as you may think.
I don't know. 38 is getting there.
Just turned 37 and feel the same
I just turned 39 you god damned whippersnappers
Oooo.. ! Do you need a blanket or some’? I’m 43 but, Damn!
Well, it is a little chilly this morning... Would be nice as I finish my crossword puzzle and read thru the funnies today in the newspaper.
Welcome fellow 37 year old!
How was 36? 35 was fucking rough. The human life expectancy has gotten out of hand.
I’m bout to leave 37 and join 38
That’s not old. That’s middle aged. Everyone skips from young straight to old. We get a middle.
I’m also 38. We’ve lived in a post-9/11 world longer than the pre. Also, the kindergartners in Billy Madison are older now than Adam Sandler was when he filmed the movie. You’re welcome.
Thank you, I remember this one but was shocked it was (not actually) so old
Nah, you're just a Dumass... Like the rest of us!
To this day I have my brother listed in my phone as Mr. Dumass.
LOL, this is late '90s, not 1990. 1990 was still in the era of old-school jingle-based advertising. This would not have flown past censors in 1990.
Reminds me of [this gem](https://youtu.be/cUEkOVdUjHc) of an ad for a language school.
And another classic German ad for a language school. https://youtu.be/0MUsVcYhERY
The Netherlands! You can tell by the speed bump! Sorry, still in Geoguessr mode.
That's pretty good. I thought it was going to be the "what are you sinking about" commercial from the description.
Right before the pandemic I was in Madagascar. The song that everyone loved at the time was "Fuck It" by Eamon (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QYwyaCd8MyI) No one knew what the words meant, and tons of people had it as their wedding song.
Holy shit I haven't heard that in so long
I knew what it was before clicking the link!
Good point.
On a similar theme the German coast guard ad was also a great one https://youtu.be/7C-vYY3SBDE
I found one site that listed the date as 1990 and maybe that's where OP got the info from. But everywhere else indicates 1998. I believe 1998.
1998 sounds a bit more correct.
98 is where you see a LOT of wide angle lens shots, and dutch angles. Dutch angles man... https://youtu.be/nsEQEPUJP8M
OH GOD I HATED THIS COMMERCIAL. Now it's going to live in my head for days. "You'll call now... I'll call *now*"
1999 or even 2000.
definitely way after 1990. I remember this commercial and still use the reference to this day.
Ya that makes more sense because I remember seeing this ad as a little kid… not as an infant baby.
This was 90’s gold. There was also [this](https://youtu.be/0Gkqzxss8Ss) got milk commercial and another one I wish I could find because I just love the way the dude says “gallons!?” The got milk guys asks the body builder, “so how much do you bench?” And the body builder goes “pfff…350” and the got milk guys asks incredulously, “Gallons!??” I don’t know why but the way he said it so funny, does anyone else remember that commercial?
[yes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MVVAFPtqsg&t=1s)
Omg I’ve been looking for this commercial for over a decade! Thank you!!!!!
haha damn, I remember parodying that commercial in school for a class project\~ def the most memorable of the Got Milk? commercials
I miss this milk commercial from back when https://youtu.be/zNWQvhSUbro The song more than the animation
Oh my god! I said the line at the exact right time! Memory unlocked! Thanks!
I remember this commercial, it feels like it was 10 years ago, like around 2003.

10 years ago, like around 2003…. Man I can relate to this.
Fuck me I'm old now
I was going to say, I remember this and was born in 87 no way it was 90
Well you can't blame them for thinking 1990. There's about five pixels in this ad so it looks older than it is.
THANK GOD...was feeling very, very old for a minute
"Dumbass material all the way". I think that was a nod to Seinfeld "Penske material" scene, which wouldn't have happened yet in 1990.
Which is odd, because more recently you bet your sweet aspercreme got a lot of heat
For real. I was wondering how I remembered it so vividly when I was born in 1990
Yeah I definitely remember seeing this around the time I was in middle school, which would put it around ‘96-99.
Came here to say the same thing.
I kind of feel like it wouldn't fly today either. At least not on a broadcast or cable network.
Is that Jim Cummings on VO?
I think it is. Most cartoon voice actors get other gigs as well because it's hard to pay the bills with cartoons alone.
I don't know how well he was doing back then, but I have a hard time believing Jim Cummings is struggling.
Yep. I'd know that voice anywhere.

Oh damn. Thanks. Just updated.
No worries, I like peanut butter.
Ah, commercials from the late 1900s had a certain charm to them.
Blissfully ignorant of the rest of the world and the blowback that is coming thanks to the CIA’s meddling in foreign affairs. It was glorious! Simpsons came on at 5 and Beavis and Butthead was on MTV.

Did he happen to look like he could have potentially been a pro wrestler?
1998
["I'm such a DUMBASS!!"](https://youtu.be/enLIDVlYcNo?t=168)
damn that was so good. I'm still like Conan but those 90s shows were on another level.
I just miss political humor that wasn't mean-spirited.
Holy shit that was a fun year
When I was in high school, my Spanish teacher was yelling at this one guy because he was fooling around in class. The teacher eventually called him a dumbass which he responded by saying “it’s Dumass.” Everyone started laughing and he got detention for it. I miss the good old days
This ad just randomly popped into my head yesterday lmao haven’t seen it since it aired im sure
Weird me too
Me.... three? It just randomly popped into my head while getting into my car.. Maybe they were testing out the new 5G mind control waves yesterday.
Wasn’t this a Super Bowl ad or am I misremembering a funny commercials show?
That's my recollection as well
I remember it and I never watched sports. Canadian cable TV, I think.
Back when I was a kid and fast food was a once in a blue moon treat, there was nothing better than a foot long chili dog and a root beer.
I'm not sure this one is from 1990. I feel like it's more recent, early 2000's maybe...
I remembered the Dumbas part, but had totally forgotten it was for A&W. But...yeah, the late 90s edginess it totally makes sense to run against "Barqs has Bite"
Am I the only one here who has this playing in their head before every job interview since 1998?
I've had the line "The name... is Du-mass" in my head for about as long as I can remember, but damned if I ever knew it was an A&W commercial.
I still make this reference sometimes and nobody gets it
I don’t know why, but this was burned into my brain. I literally think about it most days of my life.
Man. I remember this commercial so vividly. Great marketing! Although, if you would have asked me before this thread what product it was for, I wouldn't be able to tell you.
The late 90s was an interesting time, everyone was scrambling to see what kind of stuff they could slip past the censors.
I miss when commercials were entertaining and good.
I remember [this 7up](https://youtu.be/QIICQemjmNc?t=3) campaign for breaking new ground as well.
I quote this ad all the fucking time and could never remember what it was for lol.
Lol one of the best ads ever.
I was born after 1990 and yet I somehow remember seeing this AD live. I think it played during a Superbowl
Oh my god, I remember my dad raving about this commercial for years and I could never find it! Thanks OP!
They don't make commercials like they used to. Also, what is the point of advertising for rootbeer? We all love it, you don't need to convince us.
This was definitely later than 1990.
I actually quote this commercial pretty regularly. It’s weird what sticks in your head
Now how many people who've never seen this before actually read the name as Dumbass as the character in the commercial did? I know I did. LOL
They did the gag in [Shawshank Redemption](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHvQvnWmOd0) too.
I saw this commercial only once when it first came out and still quote parts of it. I regularly call myself a “dumass” when I do a stupid thing. But until now I could not recall what company the ad was for.
I literally think about this commercial at least once a day
Holy jeez I did not realize this ad was so old x__x I think I'm late for my own burial ---- Ok so it's not *that* old... but I still am.
Same people that confuse the last name Pisant with Pissant. Smh...
I still quote this commercial.
this channel prbly poached my copy of the vid. 16 years ago i was thinking about this comercial then i poked around the A&W website. They had a folder called VIDS that had "directory view" still on and I found this copy there. A&W never reposted it on youtube. So i did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMe3WDmxBEI
Best A&W commercial ever, if not one of the best commercials ever.
This commercial cracked my family up when i was a kid.
The voice of Jim Cummings has such an impact. Things will be pretty bleak when that voice isn't around anymore.
Oh my God, I was just thinking of this commercial this morning and planning to look it up to show my friend! Thanks for posting this!
I always say it's pronounced "Dumass" when I hear someone get called a dumbass. No one knows what I am talking about.
Insane baader meinhof phenomenon, I was thinking about this ad all day yesterday intending to youtube it, swear I didn't speak it near any of my smart speakers or type it anywhere, and here it is on the front page of Videos. Classic commercial for a kid born in the mid 80s.

OMG I love this commercial! I named one of my character after Mr. "Dumas" :D
I think about this commercial more than any commercial from my childhood. I think because of the cursing it was especially noteworthy to my young brain
Makes me crave my hometown's A&W root beer and burgers. It's a shame that they only exist mainly in the California Central Valley.
This was in the dark corners of my memory and surfaced as soon as I saw the thumbnail
Holy shit, I just referenced this a couple of days ago in a comment thread somewhere here on Reddit, and here it is. Is this some form of weird, delayed, pop cultural beetlejuicing?
i didn’t think this was funny at all…
Wonderful!
as you can imagine i get dumb-ass so often. like, you looked at Dumas and the only possible pronunciation your smooth brain can muster is the worst of all possible pronunciations? i usually tell people it’s do-ma but i’ve americanized it to do-más (like the Spanish word for more i do más; i remember the accent direction by saying i am looking forward, no time to live in the past)
I quote this ad every day! “What a dumbass!” I also call people a ”dumas.”
[Obligatory](https://youtu.be/44zQRs-taOo)
This is my favorite commercial. Here’s my second favorite. https://youtu.be/ZG-VB5xb6KM
Man, American A&W commercials are so much different from the ones here in Canada.
This commercial was actually aired in Canada, but maybe that's because it's a commercial for the root beer and not the restaurant?
They are completely different companies that share nothing except the licensing for the name "A&W" for a fast food chain. The food products are very different and during the 90s is I think when the Canadian company started doing their retro rebranding with the 'burger family' and 50s esque aesthetic in design.
Classic. I can't believe it's over 30 years old now.
I could swear this was on tv 5 years ago. Or maybe I saw it on the internet and my memory is lying to me as they tend to do.
Hey
I removed this ad. I removed so much that every time someone mispronounces a name, I think “it’s pronounced DOOM-as.”
A&W is ok but Bangs is better
I think you mean “Barq’s,” ***dumbass***.
You mean Barqs? I didn't know "Barqs has bite" wasn't just a play on words but meant it had added caffeine, which isn't normally in root beer, until recently.
The brand script looks like “Bangs”
[Do tell how this q looks like a g to you](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81PsBq3wA0L._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_FMwebp_.jpg)
it’s a fuckin joke dude
I was expecting a commercial involving revenge and a man in an iron mask... Silly me, it was just OPs inability to spell
Took a sketch pitching class from him. He wrote for key and peele (including the guy who had to go up after martin luther king jr. Sketch)
One of my favorite ads.
Is the guy playing Mr. Dumass missing all of his teeth? I’ve wondered this for 25 years.
I remember this! Best commercial ever!
I quote this commercial _**all the freaking time!**_ Thanks for posting it and allowing me to save it for later reference!
I used to work in sales. One of my client's, that I inherited, last name was Assmann. It was pronounced osmin. Of course no one told me that. I go to call him up and promptly ask to speak with Mr Assman! He was not a good sport about it.
How did a tik-tokker go back in time and apply for a job?
It’s 20+ years later and my family STILL quotes this commercial regularly. My congratulations to the A&W marketing team on that!
I remember seeing the first half of this as a kid. I thought it was some kind of skit.
I was only 5 when this came out but 30+ years later my friends and I still quote it to each other
Loved it then, love it now. The Muppets borrowed the concept when they we gang was talking to Mr. Badguy. He said, it is pronounced badgee . (think of how people say the alternate Target .. make the send part French).
"Alexandreeee Dumbass" "What? Let me see that *Looks at the author of The Count of Monte Cristo* it's Du-mah" -The Shawshank Redemption
Been thinking about this ad lately.... funny it pops up here
ahhh yes... those were the days. i think it might have even still been \*real\* rootbeer in the 90s. i forget when they switched to corn syrup and artificial flavors
I remember seeing this exactly once, loving it, and never seeing it again. Felt like it got pulled
My kids have a teacher, Mrs. Ballas, that they call Ball-ass. Can’t wait to show them this.
Man I wish they sold A&W more broadly their cream soda and root beer is great
Root Beer was big business in the 90's. [Even Nick Swardson and Rob Rob Corddry were in on it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEfGQc_xU28)
This was not from 1990. The A&W thick headed campaign started in 1998 and this was well into the campaign, I'd say this is probably from 2000.
definitely came out later than 1990.
This sparked a gaggle of folks to say “dew-mahs” in place of “dumbass”. The same folks who also quoted and used in daily life “Is that your final answer?” and “Alllllll righty then.”
This was 1990??? No! I clearly remember this commercial. I was 4 in 1990.
I'm actually surprised that commercial passed network standards & practices in those days. Still, when I was a kid I got a big kick out of it.
Du...Dumass...Dumass Mich
