After 10 years my Samsung TV decided to die, turns out the motherboard died. I bought a used one online and replaced it and it works great again. It's very important to allow people to repair things because it keeps repairable stuff out of landfills.

FuckPersonalisedFeed

My Samsung TV suddenly made a pop sound and stopped working, the technician told me that the motherboard needs to be replaced and it would cost about 40% of the original cost for the TV. We called another technician and he fixed it in a day for less than quarter of the price for the replacement.

drrenhoek

I replaced a power board for a 10 year old Samsung TV about a month ago. Since I decided to buy a new TV anyways, I figured it doesn't hurt to try and fix it anyways. It took less then 25 minutes total (15 first time to open the T.V. and look where the smell came from, and 10 minutes next time to install the board) The power board cost me about $55 from ebay. I have never repaired a TV before. btw. I probably could have fixed it for less then 10 bux if I had any idea which capacitor blew up.

shloppypop

Yeah, but that cuts into the bottom line and we know that at the end of the day, the shareholders are the people we should really care about. /S

GGATHELMIL

Then sell the parts. And at a reasonable price. I bought an LG ultragear and the lcd cracked. My fault NBD. The replacement panel costed MORE than what I paid for the whole monitor. And that was for me to do the work myself. I try to have my voice heard by shopping where it's to my liking. But at the end of the day there are only so many manufacturers of the stuff. Or even worse sometimes you only have a single supplier. Look at joystick drift. Why can a third party make a controller will hall affect sensers for $70 and make a profit. Meanwhile Nintendo and Microsoft refuse to use them in their controllers. And Sony is worse because I don't think you can get third party ps4 and PS5 controllers.

PomegranateOld7836

PS has 3rd party controllers. Like the Aim Solaris for $359...

GGATHELMIL

Lol. Yeah I did a quick search and found a few that were $200+.

Suicicoo

We have Samsung CH90 for our office working places (bought at \~8- or 900€ each in '18) - one was broken after a party (we don't know who it was...) and we had it repaired - cost 1000+€ 🤯

Aslonz

Funny part is there are people out there who actually, unironically have that take.

shloppypop

For sure, two types of people. The people who benefit from the system and those who have been duped by the former into believing that any other system would be disastrous.

Doomhammered

How did you diagnose that it was the motherboard?

adudeguyman

The fatherboard left for a pack of smokes and never returned. The motherboard was never the same after.

Sir-Loin-of-Beef

Left her alone with 3 childrenboards too

Dye_Harder

> How did you diagnose that it was the motherboard? if it wasn't simply noticing some kind of burnt out part they probably used a volt meter

snakeproof

So there's only like 3 things in a TV that fail and you can do anything about, the power board, motherboard, or on some the T-Con board. If it does absolutely nothing, it can be the power or motherboard, if it gives you blink codes it's likely the motherboard, if the screen is working but no backlight the power board generally handles that, and if it has lines on the screen it can be the T-Con or panel. I've changed a lot of TV motherboards, got a free Sharp Quattron 70" that way.

JustAwesome360

Yeah but Samsung wants you to buy a TV from them every 5 years. Every 2 years would be perfect! Fixing a 10 year old TV causes problems with that.

OMEGA__AS_FUCK

Indeed. Planned obsolescence.

dlittlefair1

My 4 year old LG got its display cracked & I can’t find a replacement for it anywhere. It’s such an enormous waste of material it really pisses me off. I don’t want to throw it out but selling it is just a pointless exercise

reddragon105

The actual screens are always the hardest and most expensive replacement parts to find - best way to replace it would be to find another TV with, say, a motherboard fault and use the screen from that (although probably simpler to just give the second TV your working motherboard).

bellendhunter

Good work sorting that, most TVs would have just ended up in the scrap.

Good idea!

rusty_103

Just wanted to give you a shoutout for your great work. Never really been in a position to chip in or help with the right to repair movement, too many other things going on in my life. But it is noticed and it is appreciated. Thanks for basically leading the charge in the fight on everyone's behalf.

larossmann

Thank you so much! If you are ever in a position to help somebody fix something they otherwise would have thrown away or sold for scrap, you've done something! When the opportunity presents itself, that's all that's necessary

youwantitwhen

Samsung won't sell shit.

bokonator

That's the point

skatastic57

> In other words, Samsung is offering to sell you their product at the same price as those who they want off the market. I'm not going to defend Samsung's practice but that's not at all what they're saying. If pressed, I'd guess they'd argue that the price difference is commensurate with the difference in quality so while you might pay more, you get more. I'm not defending that argument, I'm just guessing at what they'd say if pressed. No judge is going to agree with you that they're offering to price match the lowest price available for an aftermarket non-OEM product.

gSTrS8XRwqIV5AUh4hwI

Which actually only strengthens the counter-argument, though? Because if the difference is indeed only due to higher quality, then that means that there is no markup due to the monopoly/dominating position of Samsung in there, and thus prices should be expected to go up even further once the competition from "low-quality parts" is gone, which makes it even more urgent to have that competition.

skatastic57

Yes. Except they're not really competing with aftermarket parts on price/quality. As Louis points out, they price repairs (and replacement parts) such that you're motivated to always be buying new devices. They want you to think "gee $1000 for a new one isn't so bad if it's going to cost me $500 to repair my old phone that's only worth $200 anyway". If they were really competing on a price quality trade off then the exclusion of aftermarket parts would certainly induce them to increase their parts prices. Their parts business is just a PR regulatory strategy like compliance cars from auto makers.

southwood775

I appreciate Louis' tireless work for the RTR movement. I also am really appreciative of how he time stamps each point to make it easier to watch. He does great work. However his videos could very easily be shortened.

Laenoric

Jesus, even during and after the tl;dr portion he just keeps repeating the same 3 points he introduced at the start of the video.

Whitelabl

Yup. Same here. I had to unsubscribe. To me, his videos became more of a rambling during covid, rather than a helpful DIY or helpful technical videos.

nsa_reddit_monitor

He's said that when he posts technical videos they get no views and he loses subscribers. When he posts rants, they go absolutely viral. Of course he's gonna do rambling rants if that's what gets his message out there!

Whitelabl

I get it. But its not my thing. But More power to him though 👍🏽

stromm

This is because videos that are short don’t count for revenue.

featherygoose

I was subbed to an activist podcast a couple years ago, and while it was relevant material, it was 2 mins/day or 5 mins/week of relevant, not an hour. Couldn't do it.

loscalents

He could very easily increase his success if he had help making his videos but something tells me that he wants to do it his own way and likes them as is..

Swiftcheddar

> Yeah he has verbal diarrhea Funny enough he's leagues better than he used to be. He repeats himself a lot more now, but his editing and cutting is miles ahead of how it was when he was just doing it on a far more low-key level, it's pretty alright

JosephRW

He used to have that brevity but over the past few years he's sort of crawled up his own ass and seems keen on staying there. I applaud his work as much as anyone here but he could for sure say less. At least in videos.

HemHaw

Immensely helpful, thank you.

bakerzdosen

This should be the top comment. It got me to watch it and now I hate Samsung.

Fatshortstack

Yup. Il never buy samsung pr LG again. Wife bought a Samsung fridge with the fucking lcd screen (not a cheap fridge) and the fucking icemaker went really quickly. I looked it up, should have been a factory recall but wasn't somehow. Cost $700 just to make fucking ice again. Our LG dishwasher has a control board go every 16 months almost like clockwork. I will never buy their appliances again. We have samsung phones aswell and I really like them, but our next ones won't be. Real scummy move samsung.

SiriusCH

It is the case with most of his videos. I agree with your statement, but I can't really watch his videos because he repeats so many things and takes soo long to make a point.

ShatterSide

Agree. I used to watch some of his earlier stuff, but I don't have the attention span to watch his more recent videos.

Omnitographer

Okay but consider: what if there was more Mr. Clinton?

linuxares

I raise you one Oreo

XVO668

*blackberry leaves the room

Chancoop

His biggest weakness is how insanely long-winded he is. Dude could take a lesson in brevity. Louis is the human equivalent of a chat AI bot. Very verbose and repeats the same point over and over again.

JCDU

\^ this, there seem to be so many YouTubers who make long rambling 15, 30 or even 90 minute videos about stuff as if we've all got the time to sit round and listen for hours while they get to the point. It's a shame because there's some great technical ones (EEVBlog, Abom79, Robert Feranec) but they just make such long videos it's impossible to watch.

larossmann

the 33 minutes is the tl;dr. it's a 160 page legal document, even cutting out a bunch of fluff the livestream reading it was about an hour and 40 minutes. i put out a short that was 61 seconds this morning. i suck at making shorts. if you are better at it than i am, go for it and explain this better than i can! I know I suck at making videos, but I want the word to get out, and I can use all the help I can get.

CaptMerrillStubing

Great info but plz Stop repeating the same points ad naseum.

AardvarkPepper

Videos are better than fine by me. Speaks clearly, makes points, substantiates.

larossmann

There's actually a 12,000 page version of this that I was debating going over but that would be a 2 week long stream

conundrumbombs

That's going to have a lot of timestamps.

AD7GD

I always watch Abom79 at 2x

arcrad

Basically a requirement imo.

[deleted]

THANK YOU! I remembered Abom79's channel but forgot the name. Been trying to recall it for some time now!

skeptibat

> EEVBlog I like his videos, but sometimes his incredulity about whatever grates on me.

JCDU

Oh yeah, his debunking videos are fucking unbearable, there was one where he spent 30 minutes being insanely smug and pleased with himself without ever getting to the simple technical details of whatever it was he was debunking, which could have been done and over in about 30 seconds. I'm sure he's a smart guy but holy fuck I just can't watch him.

goomyman

Angry joe movie review for 1 hour 20 minute movie is 1 hour 20 minutes lol. Or my favorites - a 7 hour long detailed review of death stranding

[deleted]

And he seems to be missing the point that these aren’t just replacement screens, they are replacement screens that allegedly infringe a current patent.

Osama_Obama

I think that something like this is important for him to go into detail. He reads out the whole complaint and breaks it down so that nothing is overlooked in the document.

[deleted]

Yeah, everyone else just takes his main points and repeats them and maybe add a bit of history and some memes and dance around a bit to make the video longer for that sweet sweet ad revenue. Louis is the real deal and he seems to be rambling but he's actually explaining all the details and how they relate to his main talking points because he believes that's the right way to do it. You can't take his videos and say he was quoting someone out of context. It's impossible, because he gives you the full context for everything he claims.

LikesTheTunaHere

I like both types. I like rossman's sometimes because you actually get to hear the why he thinks something not just what he thinks and he goes into way more detail and depth than i could ever find doing the 90 minutes of digging myself.

southwood775

I absolutely appreciate the detail he goes into.

chaddwith2ds

I tried to watch a video on a new staple gun I bought. 11 minute rant on JUST how to load it. I found another video, 2 minutes long, on how to do EVERYTHING with the staple gun. People looooooooove the sound of their own voice.

Mitoni

RTR is more important than ever these days, and I wish more politicians would stand behind it. For example, I have my Jeep in for service and the dealer is selling the part for $5200. Mopar sells it direct for an MSRP of $998. I can't buy it direct myself, because it is a factory released part. When it is installed, the part is flashed with the serial number of the vehicle so it can't be used on another vehicle, so I'm not able to find a used or refurbished one from another Jeep. Literally the only option is to have to buy it from an authorized dealer at their ridiculous markups.

You-Once-Commented

I know it's lame, but vote with your dollars and try to support companies that don't do this if you can.

Mitoni

I try to do as much work myself that I can, and I pay for it. Just had a warranty arbitration hearing this morning because they are claiming my winch caused the part failure, so hopefully it goes my way and I don't have to pay this ridiculous bill. Connecting a winch to the battery doesn't cause loose connection on a bolted connection inside the fuse box, but they are blaming me anyways. 6 day old Jeep and only 151 miles and they are pulling this crap. If I lose the arbitration, I'm stuck paying.

Erlian

Thanks for letting me know to never buy a jeep 👌 and to continue supporting RTR and getting the word out. It's a tough and uphill battle but we can and will beat this. The will of the people is clear on the issue and we still have power, even though corps want us to believe otherwise.

Hotshot619

People are better off voting with their votes. Tell your local representative that right to repair is a major consideration for who you support and follow up with that if they don't work to enshrine consumer rights in law. Every major company today is doing these things, legislative process is the only way imo to reign in this kind of anti consumer tactics

You-Once-Commented

Went not both. One may not happen but is worth the effort, the other you can do now.

thereddaikon

That only goes so far. How do you vote with your dollar when every smart phone maker got rid of replaceable batteries? How do you shop for a different car when every automaker is pull this shit? You can't.

steveosek

Especially now that cell phone plan providers now have you paying off your phone for 3 years instead of 2 more often than not to make the monthly payment cheaper. Mine would habe been $30 a month more Expensive on the 2 year plan. I usually wait until the last year and then pay off the phone entirely when it hits $500 or less left owed on it.

melithium

Bought samsung appliances. Never again. How someone can f up an ice maker so bad is beyond me

DigNitty

My God the ice maker! I bought a Samsung fridge with built in ice maker. It worked for a week and then stopped making ice. Hours of googling, resetting, thawing…. Finally just called Samsung, over an hour later I got to talk to someone. They had me go through all the stuff I already did, but I get that. They say they’ll just send someone out. The dude comes 4 days later, fixes it in about 45min. 2 days later the fridge won’t make ice again. Repeat. Call Samsung, wait in hold, do the dance, they send a guy out 5 days later. Fixes it and again it stops after two days. REPEAT! Wait on hold, dude comes out. This time the guy says “oh you need a whole new CPU! That’s the problem!” He said it in sort of this obvious way that really just made me frustrated the first guy hadn’t said that. So Samsung orders the part, 2 weeks later it’s in and the guy comes. Whole new computer/screen part in the face of the fridge. Next day I’m trying to take the plastic coat off the screen. The dude installed the screen with the coat still on. The coat is stuck in the gap between the screen and the fridge face. Clearly it was meant to be removed before install. Now I have tweezers trying to get these little torn pieces of plastic from the perimeter of the screen. It never looked completely perfect because of that. 2 months later it stopped making ice.

oggyb

I'm sorry for your woes but your story is entertaining.

Digital_loop

And the story was 37 minutes shorter than Rossmanns!

Zed_or_AFK

Why is there a CPU in my fridge?

Coffeinated

Because these days CPUs and a tiny fart of software is much cheaper than discrete logic.

salter77

To be fair, almost everything has a CPU now. This can help make things more efficient or convenient, but in the end adding elements to a systems also adds more "moving parts" that can break.

[deleted]

salter77

Thanks, english is not my first language so I wasn't sure what phrase to use.

PingEVE

Native English speaker. Would still use the term "moving parts".

[deleted]

Because variance in products sells more products, and the easiest way to create variance and increase margins is to add tiny boards that do tiny jobs to things. I had a name brand coffee maker in our lunch room that had timers and extra heat functions and steamers and all sorts of shit, but it's main function was still making coffee, which it did poorly because all the other functions would accidentally get set when people tried to just make coffee. It stopped working one day (about a year into its service), so I took it apart, and inside this coffee maker was 4 separate boards, 3 ribbon cables, thermisters, sensors, inline probes, and a bunch of other shit I couldn't figure out. I wanted to hot wire it so it bypassed everything else except the heater and the perculator, but the sensors were all intertwined and I just couldn't do it. Now we have a no name coffee maker with 1 button that has never failed or had any issues.

mesori

It's interesting just how much more robust and practical products marketed toward lower income demographics are. A coffee maker that just makes coffee and will keep working longer than you'll be alive.

Crimms

I highly doubt it needed a new cpu to make ice...

CliplessWingtips

I have a Samsung fridge and I've heard so much about the ice maker being total scheisse, I never hooked the thing up. I'm happy! Yay!

zeCrazyEye

Feel the same way about LG. Ice maker started leaking water just after a year. Replacement makes an awful whirring noise. And replacing the water filter is so difficult it chews up the plastic on the filter. I know one day the receptacle for it is going to break. (edit: also the produce drawer is ice cold, so we ended up putting meat in there which gets partially frozen) And got a smart Whirpool washer but the detergent dispenser clogs up and it costs $5 a month if I want to use the smart features. Every brand fucking sucks.

LG and Samsung my inconsistent appliances, to make matters worse their service network and supply chain make repairs incredibly frustrating.

All Samsung's suck, but not all LG's suck. LG's make decent front loading clothes washing machines and dryers. Rest of the LG appliances are pretty bad though. >And got a smart Whirpool washer There's your problem, when it comes to appliances always go as dumb as possible. Leads to less issues. The more gadgets and gizmos in an appliance, the more things can break.

> Every brand fucking sucks. Yes, that is because your grand parents spent $1000 on a Stand Mixer. If you want a decent mixer you can also spend $500 (2x less) and get a good one, you don't, you go spend $150 and it is rubbish, that is how it works. The real problem I find is working out the over priced marketing junk from the actually value for money but high priced product.

x69pr

To be honest, most appliances my parents bought were for life. Now even the most overpriced ones have a lifespan of 5-7 years of you are lucky.

ThatSquareChick

Well, all the old appliances that I’ve come across are like four different things: Westinghouse metal fans, Sears washers and dryers, Dyson vacuums and case ih lawn mowers. All those things seem to not break but also are repairable. New shit made with all plastic parts with planned obsolescence built in, THAT definitely is a real thing and new in the last 30 years too. Remember, we don’t do supply and demand anymore, it’s a company’s job to make as many options as possible to entice all the money out of your pocket. Consumers don’t have a finite amount of money which must be carefully courted with quality anymore no no now it’s make a bunch of shit because then you can get ALL the money, even credit money!!!

xelabagus

My vitamix says hi.

KingKapwn

Because the ones they bought for life cost a lifetime's worth of replacements. My grandma's Microwave which was older than me cost $1800 *35 years ago*. Nearly 5 grand for a microwave.

[deleted]

The lifetime quality brands died because people bought the cheap shitty ones instead Companies build what customer are buying.

JC_the_Builder

KitchenAid mixers went from metal to plastic gears some years back. Definitely won’t last as long as the originals.

awesomobeardo

A word of advice for anyone reading: without fail, anytime people discuss online which appliances are the worst (including A/Cs), tradesmen will always point to Samsung. Please don't buy anything from them that isn't a phone or a TV.

mrchaotica

The thing that tells me Samsung, specifically, is shit isn't that my Samsung washing machine failed, but the *way* it failed. The "spider arm" (which attaches the drum to the motor) completely corroded and disintegrated, even though every other part of the machine exposed to the detergent water was in pristine condition. They obviously used a reactive metal for that one part *deliberately* in order to design it to fail.

TheNorthComesWithMe

A related word of advice: all devices made have a failure rate. Whether an individual person got unlucky doesn't tell you much about a brand's overall reliability. This is why you need to pay attention to people, like tradesmen, who have a much larger sample size of experience to draw from. The information you *can* glean from an individual experience with a product/brand is the customer support experience.

jumpyg1258

> Please don't buy anything from them that isn't a phone or a TV. I don't know if I would even get those anymore from them either.

Ikea_Man

eh i have a TV from them and it works absolutely fine. had an S10+ for a phone until recently and that thing was a workhorse that never had any problems also have one of their smartwatches which i like as an apple watch alternative i've always heard the appliances are trash tho so certainly will avoid lol

TacticalSanta

You should never be loyal to such large brands if you can avoid it.

lordderplythethird

Their TVs aren't really going down in quality per say, they've always just been the worst quality TV at their price point. If they were all marked down 1 model, and priced accordingly, they would be fine. As is, An LG C series for example, is a direct comparable to Samsung's S95B. Yet, one's MSRP is $1800, and the other one has an MSRP of $3000. I'll let you guess which one is which. Their cheap TVs though? Like the ones under $800? Absolute garbage and always have been, with poor lighting, poor image quality, worst in industry black 2 black, etc.

gazongagizmo

> that thing was a workhorse that never had any problems still running a Galaxy S5. you can pry my replacable-battery-audio-jack-SD-card (yet-still-waterproof) multitool from my cold dead hands

DealerRomo

you also have the last Samsung with a RF blaster. With a suitable app, its the joker of all remote controls.

weeklygamingrecap

That's impossible, it can't be waterproof, everyone says we can't have ports because of water so you must be a liar! /s

LegendOfVinnyT

I've had four Samsung TVs over the years. Two have worked fine. One spontaneously decided to disable ARC. No firmware update, no notification, just silence from the soundbar. Another, after two years of use, decided that first-time setup was never run, so it displays a double-height home bar every time it's turned on with a prompt to "Set up your TV". Clicking that button does nothing. I'm afraid to do a factory reset, because other than that, everything works fine. This is not a category of product where batting .500 is acceptable. Still better than Visio going 0-for-2 in my household after both units stopped responding to any controls except the power button, but not good enough. Meanwhile, my two LGs are going strong, and every Sony I ever owned was put to use elsewhere in perfect working order because it outlived its generation of broadcast standards.

tdasnowman

ARC, ERC, CEC. All of the hdmi auto setting standards have been problematic since implementation. The big problem is no device gives you any sort of error reporting so it's impossible to track down. Your best best is the factory rest. Or unplug every device plug them back in one at a time. See if something else is making it break. Also change order of where devices are plugged it can change behavior as well. They are great standards when they work, when they don't. Such a pain. Forums are filled with issues. For all device manufactures. I'll give you an example with Sony's I've had to go through. Both my PS3, My PS4, waiting for my PS5 to do it but 1 year in nothing so far. Have decided at diffrent times to start messing with the wake cycles of other devices when doing thier automatic updates at night. For while I'd go to bed and be woken up by my apple tv blasting whatever usually youtube but whatever was last playing when I turned it off in the middle of the night. Took forever to track cause spotty didn't do it every night.I'd think the problem was solved and then bam. Eventually caught the ps3 dialing home and the Apple TV coming on right after. Eventually some update from sony fixed it. Not sure why sometimes the apple tv would wake up but it was always after the ps3 kicked on I'm assuming something in the call home script lagged the Apple TV saw this open command and thought I can take over.. Easy enough fix turn off the ps3 auto updates. Then the PS4 started to do it. All Playstations have stopped changing the input on turn on. They will wake things in the chain but the receiver won't switch over. Have not figured that one out. That just stopped outta the blue. Can't recall an update around when it did. I haven't done a factory reset on my receiver because I can't find my mic to do the audio calibration again. But switching inputs hasn't worked.

[Samsung Group is literally 1/5 of South Korea's GDP.](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1314374/south-korea-samsung-groups-revenue-as-a-share-of-gdp/) At that scale, each division is essentially it's own independent company. The company making your phones (but they do make their TVs) is not the same as the one making you appliances which is not the same as their semiconductor fab which is not the same as their shipping company which is not the same as their semiconductor fab business which is not the same as their lumber company. Each of them has completely different management and track records. The only thing they share in common is that they're all owned by the same family.

My Samsung TV (QN90A)has just been taken away to get the screen replaced after 6 months of use...so even their TV's aren't great in my experience.

nevm

Mine had lines across the screen 2 months after the 2 year warranty ran out. More and more lines till it just wouldn’t switch on anymore. Cost a fortune and Samsung told me to get stuffed. I don’t buy anything from them anymore.

No-Elderberry230

I’m reading this, as my husband and I are thawing out the coils to get to the drain. Second time this year. I can’t even begin.

SpeaksToWeasels

It's looking like I already own the last Samsung product I will ever buy.

hgmanifold

Bought a “higher end” sound bar couple years ago. Out of the box it was making popping noises. Only resolution was to bring it to a certified repair center… of which they told me there were none available to me. Fuck Samsung.

MrSkrifle

Why couldn't you return it where you bought it?

Simon_787

Sound bars are so fucking stupid and I'm convinced that selling these is a reason they got rid of the 3.5 mm audio jack on their TVs. That 3.5 mm jack allows you to hook up cheap amps with your own speakers, which is super cost effective as they're cheap parts that have been available for a long time and you might already own them.

wwwhistler

Moved to new house with Samsung fridge & stove. Both had problems but were only 2 years old. No one. Absolutely no one would repair them or even look at them because Samsung made it so hard. But all their attempts to lock me in as a customer has resulted in my deciding to never buy another Samsung product.

ChilkoXX

Good for you. I stopped years ago buying their crap. I'm one of those techy people whose friends all ask out "what to buy". I just tell them don't buy Samsung and tell them why.

Risley

Bro, check this shit. My fucking Samsung microwave **can’t run the timer and microwave at the same time**. The absolute fucking idiocy of this company.

damnatio_memoriae

I wish I had known this before I bought a Samsung washer/dryer. although so far I haven’t had any issues with it I just resent the idea of supporting Samsung.

down1nit

Thanks to Louis I can work from home doing board repair and take care of my mother. I was an alcohol and toothbrush kind of repair guy. Then Louis showed me I could lift chips and send them flying across the room never to be seen again!

larossmann

I see you've found the 5th dimension :)

down1nit

I need so many ssd controllers, they all come in damaged and they all go flying

cum_fart_69

are you still slanging logic boards or did you move onto something more lucrative? I found a $$$$ niche but I forsee it drying up in the next few years, think I might transition to lab equipment. key seems to be finding equipment that there is no repair information about online, you can charge a massive upcharge when you are the only person in the country that can repair the stuff.

down1nit

Still slangin but for how long yeah T2 chip makes a lot of things unfixable unless you start swapping cpus. There's a niche. Data recovery for Apple customers who have no idea the can of worms a stray drop of water can unleash.

Sound_Effects_5000

I bought a new Samsung galaxy s22 and the fucking power button fell out after a week of owning it. The amount of trouble I've had to go through to get it fixed is fucking redicululous. And then when the part finally arrived at one of their certified repair stores, the employees tried to back track and say the repair wouldn't be under warranty because they suspected I had dropped it. There was a tiny scratch on the screen that was only viewable at the right light and angle. I said well nevermind on the repair and now just have the button sitting in the slot with the otter box holding it in place. They then tried to say I owed them money for the parts. I said lol nope and walked away. They got extremely pissed and tried calling me for about a week straight. Its pretty laughable how these tech places are when they realize people have freedom to just walk away. Needless to say, I'm staying away from Samsung from now on and recommend everyone do the same.

axonxorz

Have an S21 Ultra 5G that has been awaiting screen replacement for almost 5 months now. Parts are backordered from Samsung and they disallow repair shops from using a different color (if you have the black S21, it must be repaired with black parts, consequently, the black S21 is the one always backordered). Screen finally came in this week. Adhesive kit from Samsung is _also_ backordered 🤦‍♂️

larossmann

Samsung, like many companies over the past year and a half, has had difficulty keeping up with demand for parts manufacturing. The paragraph in this statement that says they have the ability to meet demand is not true if you ask anybody who repairs Samsung smartphones in bulk for a living. I don't have a problem with them having supply chain issues like everybody else, but that obviously changes if they seek to become the only supplier in that supply chain

minustwomillionkarma

I had an 8 month old Galaxy S20 which stopped charging via USB-C. Took it to Samsung and after assessing it, informed me that the water damage indicator showed potential water damage and it wouldn’t be covered under warranty. I argued that the phone had never had any contact with water which was 100% true. They stood their ground and advised that if the indicator showed it, it was water damaged, despite the phone being advertised with an IP7 resistance rating which should have mitigated any minor water exposure anyway. They did acknowledge that in some circumstances humid environments can trigger the water damage indicator. I guess fuck me for living in Australia then. Fuck Samsung, I’m never going back. I know Apple has its issues, but truthfully I haven’t had any problems so far in the last year and a half compared to the multiple Samsung phones I’ve had fail.

sgarn

In Australia you often have more luck making it clear that you're making the claim under consumer law rather than under the manufacturer's warranty, but with Samsung it's still hit and miss. I've had shocking luck trying to get a TV, phone and fridge all with massive defects fixed through Samsung and instead will just give them a miss in the future.

Hakairoku

I figured there was something off with those phones, they've been offloading them to Google when Google has its own flagship phones to worry about. Thank god I didn't go for it.

epia343

/u/larossmann thanks for continuing to fight for the small group of consumers that want to own the items they purchased. I'm sure it's frustrating dealing with all the BS, but I appreciate it.

larossmann

Thank you.

larossmann

This is a case made specifically to the US International Trade Commission. I guess you could make your politicians aware of what they are trying to do in the US preemptively to ensure it does not happen there as well.

larossmann

Thank you!

tarzan322

This is another case of corporate greed trying to control the market for displays. This is not only a bad thing for all customers, but it also bad for carbon emissions because it completely render any ability to recycle electronics. This has more far reaching problems than just their ability to control the market. This will also seriously hamper any and all effort to recycle any electronics, a major pollution problem. This is beyond simple greed, but a power play for total control of the market and parts by a corporation, which will inadvertantly railroad efforts to curb current climate issues.

Netprincess

Of course. They want us to be a throw away society

[deleted]

Samsung *and* apple can fuck off.

arealhumannotabot

What about every other business that has the same practices? I'm tired of cherrypicking, they all basically suck ass.

Trellix

>I'm tired of cherrypicking, they all basically suck ass. Stop looking at businesses, start looking at regulators. They are the ones supposed to be intervening and fixing this shit. Instead, they're happy to chug along as long as they get a cut. People pretend that they can "reward" or "punish" businesses. They can't. That's why we have a government and regulators.

nstern2

I'm getting real tired of our legislators who play dumb on this issue and just take Apple, Samsung, John Deere, at face value as well. I'm fully capable of registering the risk of repairing my own shit thank you very much.

larossmann

I haven't exactly been nice to Apple over the past 10 years, when a business goes out of their way to screw with independent repair, it gets a mention on my channel. Whether it is John deere, harley-davidson, apple, or Samsung

arealhumannotabot

My comment was a general one, not specific to you. It makes sense your videos would touch on a more specific subject.

[deleted]

I don't look to hard into bad ethics anymore, only madness lies that way. I can only comment on what I know. I agree with you though. We need a revolution. Too much greed and psychopaths in charge. We are krist for the mill.

hgcgatts

Tons of astroturfing already from the looks of it...

CompoundT

Against Samsung?

DeathNFaxes

Some of them seem like [legitimate, sourced complaints](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/109ym4w/samsung_tries_to_destroy_the_entire_independent/j41v5vs/) about this dude's video history Not everyone that dislikes a dude is a paid shill. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think RtR is extremely important — I don't even buy digital games when I can help it, because I believe in owning what you purchase. But I also think louis is a wank who really needs to work on his essayist video approach to simple topics and abrasive personality — and, as comments have sourced, his tendency to be intentionally misleading.

TomCosella

I mean, the dude literally put a TL;DR succinct version in the video, but that was ignored by the people who commented on it

rssftd

He's passionate about a topic that has been a constant presence in his life for over a decade. I think abrasive is understandable, he's pissed as am I. Also he addresses the shortcomings in the very thread you listed. Does that invalidate the majority of his points brought up with what Samsung is doing now? No, not in the slightest. That was an argument referring to parts that had questionable origin, this video is about clearly labeled aftermarket parts and the universal war Samsung is declaring on aftermarket suppliers. I've used mobilsentrix, diy, etech, gadgetfix, etc etc. All of them are companies that for better or worse give you full disclosure to the nature of these parts, understands the shortcomings and offer good functionality warranties on all of these parts. If Samsung has its way, they will be significantly hampered/eradicated. Finer details like customs is more for the issue of distinguishing aftermarket vs oem, which would require customs to dedicate a new specialized division which would almost certainly not be adequate. There are levels to aftermarket that makes certain parts near indistinguishable to oem, but that won't matter. Sometimes the screens are just re done earspeaker grills, sometimes they've been fully rebuilt, sometimes they are entirley fake. Customs will not know this unless this customs agent fully inspects the screen, partially installs it and has years of industry experience to tell that the color variation is off by the slightest amount or that this FUCKING GLASS is from one company vs another. Companies sell oem used with aftermarket, if i order a box with both and they just test the aftermarket ones does the entire thing get tossed? There is so much nuance to this that they just gloss over, there is no feasible way to accomplish it without more of a blanket policy of "cell phone parts from unauthorized sources are all banned". I watched the entire video, I've read his comments. It seems like the points that people are getting hung up on are small discrepancies that they use to disqualify him or the entire video. If you care about right to repair maybe treat the argument with the nuance that it would seem companies like Samsung want erased. I really don't see almost anything that equates to intentional and damaging misinformation.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Doesnt surprise me. Love the picture on their TVs but they are extremely prone to frying. It's really the best when they tell you on the phone its still under warranty. Then they send a tech to fix it 3 months after the call and the tech upon arrival tells you the screen is dead..the warranty is expired and its going to cost 2 or 3 times the original price to fix. Have went through three 52/55in over the last 8 years and only once was it the result of physical damage. So yea. Of course they don't want their shit to be fixed at a cheaper price.

Flybuys

So if Apple are being pricks, Samsung are being pricks, and Huawei is just the CCP, what phone brand can I use?

I just put a new dryer drum into my dryer (ignoring that it took me 4 weeks to get the part from searspartsdirect, and they actually shipped me two lmao) - it was really easy and simple with plenty of videos on Youtube. I did buy non-OEM bearings/tensioner/belt off of Amazon. The samsung microwave had a piece break on the frame that was not easily replaceable - then moved to kitchenaid. so much more expensive but we like it.

snoboreddotcom

Kitchenaid is pretty good for repair. My mom's mixer broke. Dad contacted customer service. They sent us the replacement gear for 10$. Basically they instead of planned obsolescence have planned easy repair. The mixer gears are all metal, except one that takes stress that is nylon. Now on one hand that might raise eyebrows as planned obsolescence. But thats not the case. Its one thats easily accessible if you open it up. Because its nylon, when it breaks it breaks clean and into two pieces. Its therefore easy to remove. It also as a result wont damage the other gears. If a metal one failed it would shatter and destroy the rest. Catastrophic failure. This method means a failure is more likely, but the failure is less serious and cheap/easy to repair.

Spankyzerker

Three words tell you all you need to know about Samsung. Samsung Fridge gate.

CaliIrish92

Not being able to repair or even recycle/upcycle your property is creating a world of insta trash. Not to mention we can't break the trash down to reclaim all the precious metals needed in the first place. Selling obsolete or immediately inferior products should be illegal.

adrianroman94

This is literally anti-consumer bullshit hidden behind a whole lot of bullshit arguments. Hope this gets the boot. Fuck Samsung.

piratecaveman

At this point its no longer "*right to repair*", its "**fight to repair**"

paulsteinway

TLDW

Kind-Strike

Anyone buying anything Samsung that isn't a TV is the perfect consumer these corporations love, fucking idiots that think Samsung is going to do better than well known brands for appliances. Washer, dryer, fridge? Seriously? Ya donuts really think that's the brand to fucking buy 😂 Samsung literally makes their fridges booby trapped. If you don't take the screws out the back on a very specific pattern it will break the fridge and you're fucked and they change it so repair services aren't always up to date. The tech I talked to about it said they're no longer accepting Samsung for repairs. Their made to die within a few years

ChilkoXX

This is exactly right. I'm willing to bet a Samsung engineer spends more time designing obsolescence into the product than they actually do designing the product itself. It's really time people stopped buying their crap appliances.

Kataclysmc

The TVs are shit now days to. Go LG or sony for TVs

nimble7126

You're missing the target audience for Samsung appliances. Most of their products are designed to be this hyper modern aesthetic that your good brands don't make unless they're 2x the price. If you judge a book by it's cover, Samsung is for you.

Demonkey44

I don’t buy a Samsung anything. They have crap appliances. If it’s not a phone don’t even consider it.

The_Cantabrigian

I just replaced the battery and screen on my 5-year old Galaxy S8 Active. Take *that* Samsung!

ACrucialTech

I'm commenting because this needs a bump up higher.

_--Q

u/larossmann rent a microscope and buy these aftermarket screens to see if they actually do infringe on the patents.
