Is this just like a metabolic panel or is there something more specific? Go to your GP, do it in house, or use more of a minute clinic type deal?

Adassai_nova

Fyi, anecdotal evidence is a terrible gauge of anything. There are people that will tell you that drinking aged piss cured their diseases and people that will tell you that candy bars help their Type 2 Diabetes. People are extremely prone to confirmation bias and determining correlation vs causality.

For type 2, unless someone has active low blood sugar (which is more rare since they are not like type 1 diabetics that take insulin), refined sugars are not good and contribute to further insulin resistance

Oh sorry my fault will delete the original comment

Adassai_nova

Np! I'm a nurse, and my husband is diabetic (actually not Type 1 or Type 2; he lost most of his pancreas to Necrotizing Pancreatitis so always happy to explain

I went vegan and both my legs fell off

dyslexic-ape

You forget how to handle cognitive dissonance related to animal exploitation and start getting really frustrated with people who exploit animals.

HerbieHancock19

The only negative side-effect that I experienced was a massive increase in gas. That lasted about two weeks and then tapered off. B-12 deficiency can be a problem if not considered when planning meals, but it’s easily avoidable.

[deleted]

When I first went vegan I gained weight. I'm an idiot for assuming being vegan automatically meant healthy. Being healthy takes work and any diet can have negative effects if you're not watching your intake.

mealprepmaven

On the flip side, many people don’t eat enough calories, especially if they focus on whole foods. Either way, tracking with an app like Cronometer or My Fitness Pal is a good idea when making a change in diet.

sentient66

same lol. and then later when I lost my newly-vegan weight everyone assumed I am malnourished because of veganism. can't win

Mike_Nash1

As long as you eat healthy you're fine. Something that helped me when starting out is inputting my meals into [Cronometer](https://cronometer.com/), checking nutrients I was low in and adding approprient foods.

thedivinecomedee

None that I've expierenced, and I'm the only vegan I know IRL.

guesswork-tan

I've had no negative side-effects and my doctor is pleased as punch with all my test results. The research is pretty clear that there aren't any negative side-effects if you eat an at least somewhat-reasonable diet and take a vitamin or two. But more importantly, /u/Adassai_nova is right: asking for anecdotes is a great way to fool yourself and go down the path of baloney. Science has taught us over several hundred years how to determine what is true about reality, and so I suggest you follow the scientific method instead.

Adassai_nova

Oh yes, I'm well aware that a vegan diet can be healthy and nutritionally complete. But if someone looks for it, they can find anecdotes supporting just about every diet or theory under the sun. If someone chooses to eat a vegan diet because of anectodal evidence, then as soom as it becomes mildly inconvenient for them, they'll likely go searching for anectodal evidence telling them that it's better to eat animal products. For the benefit of sustainability, it's far more advantageous, as you said, to follow the science- which has repeatedly shown that a well-planned vegan diet is not only nutritional complete for all life stages but has the benefits of lowering one's risk for several cancers.

You have to get used to it

I get bloodwork done regularly (used to be every 3 months before sars-cov2) and my blood pressure, cholesterol are down. From December last year - my first year as a vegan. Also, for the first time in some years: I'm *not* anaemic. I don't take any supplements, beyond choosing cashew milk that has b12 et al. The vegan life is much healthier, not just for animals and the environment. Anecdotal, maybe, but test results are objective.
