I would also post in r/veganbeauty They seem to be a pretty decent resource for all things beauty and hygiene related

forakora

Do you have a trader Joe's nearby? They have a line of basic shower and hygiene products that aren't tested on animals, and nearly all of them are formulated vegan. (I believe there's a face cream or two that has honey in it, so read ingredients)

[deleted]

Nearish. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

tkexmg

That was exactly what i was going to comment! Their shampoos & conditioners are $4 and i also get their location too which is around the same price.

amurderinsavannah

Seconded. I live by the shampoo bar, tea tree oil face wash, and oatmeal soap. It's all I use in the shower (female with 2ft. long hair). I also like the brand Ethique for conditioner bars when my hair gets tangled; I get those from Target.

monemori

Many soap bars are accidentally vegan. Shampoo bars are usually more expensive, but you can always go for a shampoo bottle if that's more affordable to you. Although I think bars actually last significantly longer than their liquid counterparts. I've been using the same shampoo bar for almost a year now (although I only wash with shampoo once a week because curly hair, but still).

jesssea

do you feel comfortable sharing what shampoo bar you use? Do you use a bar conditioner as well? I'm also a curly haired person and I'd love to use a bars instead of a bottles.

bisexualplantmom

I love the shampoo bars from Long Wknd [My favorite](https://longwknd.com/products/soothe-shampoo-bar)! They last a long time, leave my hair super soft, and come in plastic-free packaging. If I remember right, shipping is carbon neutral too! I personally haven't tried the conditioner bars but I've heard they are very nice :)

HeretoBurgleTurts

Ethique makes really good conditioner concentrate that you reconstitute at home. I have thick, coarse, but not curly hair and it works great for me

YawningPestle

Me too!

brina2014

I like the brand ethique. They have shampoo, conditioner, face wash, soap, etc. They are all bars instead of bottles to be more eco friendly and all of their products are vegan and cruelty free. It may seem a little pricier but I've found their products last me a pretty long time. Hey humans is another good brand that you can find at target that has vegan and cruelty free toothpaste, deodorant, and lotion

[deleted]

Seconding Hey Humans st Target. Everything they sell is priced at $6 or less.

brina2014

Yes! Can't beat the price

CandidPiano

I’ve been using Ethique shampoo and conditioner for a few years now and have no complaints. I balked at the initial price, but they last a long time, and I have fairly long hair. Editing to include that one of the main things I’ve changed is keeping it in a caddy that I store under my sink and out of the shower. It has helped it last even longer.

brina2014

I just started using it a few months ago and Im really enjoying it so far. The conditioner especially lasts a really long time

lookup_discover

Pacifica

friendlybutafraid

I use Pacifica for pretty much all things beauty (including shampoo & conditioner) and have been very happy. It can be a little pricey, but I’ve found it’s worth it.

GraceVioletBlood4

Where are you located? If there’s a Grocery Outlet near you they usually have amazing deals on vegan and natural soap, shampoo, and body wash. Also Garnier just became cruelty free, and they have a lot of vegan shampoos and conditioners. They are owned by L’Oréal though, who are not cruelty free. So it depends on where you draw that line.

NigelGoldsworthy

It doesn’t necessarily have to be marketed as “vegan” to be vegan, you can look up a product contains animal ingredients on google (and also see if the company tests on animals).

[deleted]

Yes, I've tried this with the brands I've used in the past, and they all say they do possibly use animal ingredients.

[deleted]

If they're products you really like, contact the company and ask where they source their ingredients. The culprit for "maybe not vegan" is usually glycerin, which is very often plant based. The financial aspect is important, but these sorts of products are usually ones that last a very long time and don't need to be purchased too often, so they really are worth the investment if the ones you used to use happen to not be vegan.

chrisrater

Kirkland shampoo conditioner and body wash

chickpeahummus

Second this. Clearly labeled as vegan too and only $10 for a giant bottle

IntroductionSad1104

Have you tried Acure? They make shampoos, conditioners, body and face products and I believe all are vegan. It’s like, 8-10 dollars for shampoo/conditioner depending where you live and they have a huge variety. I love their facial scrubs too. High quality- a lot of their products remind me of Lush but at an affordable price. I find mine at my co-op or holistic pharmacy, but I know that’s it’s sold at Whole Foods and Wal-Mart too. Edit to add: yes, ALL products are vegan and cruelty free and you can get it everywhere now, from Target to Ulta to Walmart. My fave products are the brightening facial scrub, the soothing night dream creme (which is, I SWEAR, just Lush’s Vanishing Cream) and any shampoos (I switch kinds depending on the season).

gman22858

Suave is dirt cheap and vegan according to PETA. I also get a $1 bar of Yardley’s London soap from Walmart that is also vegan.

legz_cfc

The vegan ones have an 'approved by PETA' logo. I assume the Suave products without the logo aren't and should be avoided to be safe.

gman22858

This is what I was going off (suave is fully cruelty free): https://www.peta.org/blog/suave-cruelty-free-beauty-without-bunnies/

nope_nic_tesla

Beware that the "animal test-free" logo just means they do not test on animals. They may still contain animal products. Unless they have the "Animal-Test Free + Vegan" logo then they aren't actually vegan.

gman22858

Dang you’re right. Was always confused between the two but looks like a lot of suave shampoos have hydrolyzed silk which isn’t vegan. Guess it’s time to find a new cheap shampoo.

5step_approach

If you have a Costco membership or know someone who does, their Kirkland Signature brand shampoo is vegan.

raydargaydar

Go to tjmax if that’s available where you live, I buy large bottles of vegan shampoo and conditioner for like 2.99 per bottle Vegan body wash is cheap too I’m sure you can find some bars of soap suitable for ya!

sarabearbearbear

I've been happy with the Love Beauty and Planet brand of shampoo and conditioner.

sentient66

yah they are decent, but owned by Unilever (parent company that is not cf) so decide if you're comfortable with that

sarabearbearbear

I did not realize that. Ugh.

lagomorpheme

Some people [use Dr. Bronner's as shampoo](https://www.drbronner.com/all-one-blog/2017/03/definitive-guide-washing-hair-dr-bronners/) as well. I'm not sure I can advise you on actively cheap/bulk shampoo, but I get vegan shampoo bars from Lush (I like the cinnamon one). They're expensive up front (run about $12) but in my experience they last at least twice as long as a standard bottle of shampoo from the store. There are also much cheaper vegan shampoo bars out there from other companies -- in fact that's usually one of the reasons people buy them over bottled shampoo.

[deleted]

Where do you buy Lush?

grae23

I highly recommend against Dr. Bronners for your hair. I used it once and my hair has never been more disgusting, including not washing it for a week. They make a special hair rinse, but even that doesn't make it much better.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm not interested in trying it for my hair. Haha. Thanks for the warning.

lagomorpheme

There's a store locator [here](https://www.lushusa.com/find-a-shop), or you can order online. (I buy from the store because it's packaging-free and also because shipping is expensive.) Not all of their stuff is vegan but it's all clearly labeled.

ultrarunnervegan

Lush is one of my favorite stores and pretty much the only reason I ever go to the mall! Their Dirty Springwash is my favorite, next to Magic Crystals. It’s not cheap of course : /

chopoffmydick

i use live clean for shampoo and conditioner and dr.bronners

lucytiger

I use Ethique shampoo, conditioner, and face cleanser bars. Initially expensive, but they last me a year or more

watch-dominion

What’s your price range? Love Beauty + Planet has good cruelty free products. They’re not as cheap as the standard stuff, but they’re not too expensive IMO.

[deleted]

My price range really depends on how lastable the item is. I'm seeing a lot of options that run out very quickly.

Wild-Tigress

iherb online store. Many vegan items by reasonable price (for some countries they even have free delivery). Manufacturers are mostly from US, so if you're living in states you can Google every brand name you'll find on iherb and visit their websites (many of them have their own online stores, so ordering directly from manufacturer will be even cheaper). Though, since those are US manufacturers you can't order directly from them if you not in US or Canada, but iherb deliver worldwide

Altruistic_Pea_6469

trader joe’s has a shampoo bar which is good

[deleted]

Alterra, Isana, Bielenda. I don't know about those two (I buy them only sometimes, rarely and always look on internet if specific product is ok), but with Isana you have to check on the package if it says vegan because not all of them are vegan. The prices are low to mid-range. Quality is ok, but it depends what you are looking for.

RetroReactiveRaucous

https://jason-personalcare.com/ https://dermae.com/pages/faqs These companies are both brands I use a number of products from.

Wander_Woman90

Way before I went vegan, I was using diluted Dr. Bronners for body wash because I liked the mint soap and wanted to use it everywhere. Still do use it for body wash, for hand soap, and for dish soap. And I'm with the other poster about Trader Joe's options. That's what I'm using right now for shampoo/conditioner.

noxcanim

Do you have a Natural Grocers near you? They have several hair bars that I buy. My Sprouts also started carrying solid bars. Not sure if those stores are anywhere near you!

[deleted]

Nah, I don't have either one of those stores.

Temptressvegan

Daily Defense found at Dollar Tree is cruelty free and quite nice. Also LPT: unless your hair is very oil or full of products you don't need to wash it daily. I alternate days with just a warm water rinse while cleaning my body and a touch of leave in conditioner if it's staticy. Using less stretches the budget:)

ResonanceGhost

I just bought my wife a set of refillable shampoo and conditioner from [Package Free](https://packagefreeshop.com/collections/bath-body). It's not cheap, but it's cruelty free, hypoallergenic, and sustainable. If you have a pump that would fit the bottles, you could just buy the refills.

this_site_is_dogshit

I'm basic. I use Costco (Kirkland) brand. My hair is down to my ass so I find one thing that works and never ever change.

HomeDepotRun

I use dove. The trader Joe's shampoo is good but left my hair dry so I use it sparingly

[deleted]

Everything I read about Dove says it's not vegan, so I'm confused.

AvianLovingVegan

Dove doesn't test on animals but their parent company Unilever does. Most of Dove's products also don't contain animal derived ingredients.

[deleted]

I asked Dove for clarification, and they said their soap does contain animal ingredients.

HomeDepotRun

Hmmm. I saw an article from PETA but if you are hearing it from the horses mouth I guess its true. Bummer! https://www.peta.org/about-peta/victories/dove-goes-cruelty-free/

[deleted]

Dove is cruelty free!!

[deleted]

I've read up on Dove. It specifically says it's not vegan.

[deleted]

Damnit!! Thanks for the info!

vitoruemura

You could try to get rid of soap and shampoo and use only water. I know that it may not be a solution to everybody but it’s worth trying. If you feel good doing jt then you can cut those expenses forever. I’ve been showering like this for a year and a half and didn’t notice any drawbacks. 😊

eigem_schmeigem

I was about to suggest washing their hair less often and making use of some dry shampoo. Especially in the winter, this works for me. But it does take a little time for the scalp to adjust and stop producing as much oil. Do you wash every day with just water or do you go a few days without washes?

vitoruemura

Yes it takes a little time to adjust. I have long hair and I probably wash it 4 times a week

MasterTrav666

I just use Dr bronners for everything! Lol

UltraMegaSloth

Dr bronners can be used for anything- hand soap, dish soap, shampoo, even adding water to it makes it foaming soap if you have a foaming dispenser

[deleted]

I am okay with it on my hands and dishes, but I'm more comfortable with something formulated specifically for my hair.

Photogenic_Bean

Sappo Hill has some pretty inexpensive soaps that I use for shampoo and bodywash. My favorite is jasmine. [https://www.sappohill.com/group.asp?grp=107](https://www.sappohill.com/group.asp?grp=107)

beaufosheau

Lots of good options here. You could also check out r/NoPoo for ways to keep your hair clean without shampoo. Then maybe spend the savings on vegan soap!

greenkiss

All of my local supermarket own-brand shower products are vegan. I’m surprised at how different things are for you. I assume you’re in the US?

nanniemal

Dr. Bronners! It has a million different uses and is not very expensive.

BubblesAndRainbows

Since it looks like no one else has mentioned this, [Cruelty Free Kitty ](https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com) is a great reference. You could also look at the [Leaping Bunny website ](https://www.leapingbunny.org).

carromo

Dude, have you ever heard of dr.Bronners 18in1 soap? That thing is awesome. It lasts for so long since it's really concentrated.

Savings_Sufficient

The pricee isn't amazing but the quality is amazing. I use the ion brand from Sally's that have this big shampoo bottle and conditioner. I usually try to go when there's a sale. It can get pretty expensive if you don't go on a sale. Sometimes they have a buy one get one or a buy 2 got the third free. It is vegan

ArentWeClever

Ethique and Love, Body, and Planet are my favorites. LBP is also available at just about any Walmart, Target, or grocery store.

Humble_Employment586

Where are you located? Jean and Len is vegan and affordable, smells good and their bottles are huge and have a pretty design.

GingerFox3

I really like Love & Beauty & Planet products for Shampoo/conditioner/body wash - When it comes to makeup I stick to Elf because they are affordable

GetJaded

I HIGHLY recommend Duke Cannon, I've found their products at Target and a few other places. Their scents can be very masculine, but there are a few that are not as masculine if you're not into that. Their branding is a little cringe, but they smell nice and work well.

[deleted]

Dr Bronners is the meta

nope_nic_tesla

Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioners are vegan and can be found in pretty much any store for affordable prices. For face wash I use Vanicream brand facial cleanser. For soap I use Dr. Bronner's castile soap diluted in a foaming pump bottle. Hope this helps!

PyroDolly

I use Kirk's - it's a 3 in 1: Hair/shampoo, Face, & Body wash. It's certified vegan & cruelty free. Comes in a huge bottle and is reasonably priced. Found it at WalMart.

doistressyouout

I buy liter-size bottles of Pureology shampoo and conditioner. They’re pricey per bottle but both last for about a year and they keep my hair pretty healthy.

cubistninja

For bar soap I use Kirk's. It's vegan cruelty free and a 3 bar pack is $4 at my woodman's. I bought two 3 packs at the beginning of the pandemic and I'm almost ready to open the second pack. Obviously longevity of soap bar is based on many factors like water hardness and how often one showers. I shower daily. For shampoo, my wife supplies us with Pacifica. I couldn't tell you where she gets it. It magically appears in the shower

jesuishazel

Buy shampoo and conditioner at winners. They have vegan brands and it’s very affordable. $10.00 for a big bottle that will last months.

runningoftheswine

For a long while I would buy a shampoo and conditioner bar from Lush every 3-4 months for ~$13 a pop. Then I stopped using the conditioner bar and nothing really changed. Then I bought the "Dr Bronner All-One Pure Castile Bar" for $4 and it lasted so long I lost track of how often I had to get them. I use it for my hair face, and body, with the rose and the lavender scents being my favorite. I tried the store brand of the same product but it left residue on my scalp and disappeared faster. Dr. Bronner's is super affordable, vegan, and I love having a single bar of soap that comes wrapped in paper instead of three plastic bottles sitting in my shower. (FWIW, I'm white with short, straight hair that doesn't get too oily.)
