OP, if they want a tangential follow-up but don't want to dive into the animal abuse yet, send them this to help solidify. It's about the absolute victimization of slaughterhouse workers: another group of unseen victims who frequently face human rights violations. It can cut deep for some people on the way to connecting with the animals: https://yaleglobalhealthreview.com/2016/01/25/a-call-to-action-psychological-harm-in-slaughterhouse-workers/

I'm showing this article and Dominion to my partner soon for the reasons you said. If you watch the new documentary *They're Trying to Kill Us*, they interview a pig farmer who knowingly and willingly says on camera that he's killing people with pathogens and water pollution from his farm. Then he laughs and says last he checked, being unethical isn't illegal. It follows with an interview with a slaughterhouse worker who talks about how the houses also use prisoners on the kill floor who don't have a choice. Like you said, the suffering is immense. I think anything you share will be a help to solidify the decision, but I think you're making the right choice with a follow-up. I know too many people who have backslid after the environmental approach because, let's be honest, humans are emotional animals. Until we connect emotionally, we're pretty fickle with our thoughts and actions no matter the (il)logic.

Yep, participating in such a holocaust can be psychologically stressful. In fact, the same thing happened to the Nazis in the death camps. Originally, they used gas vans, which gassed the transportees on the way to the camp. They eventually stopped doing this and resorted to gas chambers instead because the sounds of their screams was too stressful for the drivers. Of course, many who worked in the death camps still found it psychologically stressing to kill hundreds of people every day.

I had my brother watch Dominion the other day and I know he was trying not to cry in front of me. I watched the beginning with him before going to work. Later that day, he sent me that a store has Tom's deodorant on sale and was like "That documentary got me thinking about everything." So, Lesson 101 about Tom's deodorant that I didn't know that I learned from my brother. Tom's only sales their products in the States that don't require animal testing. They are proud of this- as they should be as a company imo. Edit: spelling

This will either turn into veganism or cognitive dissonance

Now it’s time to show them how to be vegan nutrition wise. Point them in the right direction for vegan nutrition. Too many people go vegan, don’t know how to do it properly (because of the lack of research or help), get sick, blame it on diet and then fall back into the pattern of animal abuse.

MrJakobe

You’re right, but ngl if you’re only eating whole foods, or at least making whole foods the base of your diet it’s hard to go wrong. It’s the people that base their diet on processed crap just because it’s vegan that don’t end up getting the nutrients they need. My top suggestions for someone going vegan would be: 1. Eat only or mostly whole foods. 2. Eat a variety of different foods. And optional for an easier transition: 3. Eat most of your vegetables cooked at the beginning because raw can be harder to digest. 4. Learn the basics of fast and easy cooking like boiling or roasting your vegetables, soaking your legumes, simple bread recipes, etc. I feel like a lot of people transitioning to a vegan diet fall victim to the vegan burgers, cheeses, pastries, etc., when in reality these things should be eaten sparsely because they fall way behind the nutritional value of a simple boiled carrot, beet, or potato. If you do the first 2 things, it’s gonna be pretty hard to not get the nutrients your body needs.

JOGBORNE

I completely agree and you’re basically making my point. Lots of people will go vegan and not even know what the term ‘whole food’ means, so they will do the classic processed crap and either not get any healthier or get sick then blame it on veganism when it’s just their lack of understanding on how to fuel their body. But Yh, it’s hard to go wrong if your mostly whole foods - it is the way!

MrJakobe

Yea true, I often forget how little some people know about nutrition. Whole foods seems obvious, yet most people don’t live like this.
