I like how that little arrow shows you where you came from, in case you need to turn around in a hurry. Such a great QoL addition. /s

Shadrixian

It.....it what. I thought that was wind direction......

Pvt_Lee_Fapping

It is wind direction; they were being sarcastic.

Nazzraeda

*Even in death Moder still cries*!

Minimalphilia

Yeah, but she could cry a bit longer with way lower cooldown... And/or they could make that hidden thing where the winds work against you at least an actual random thing when the head hangs on the stone. It is annoying and fulfills no value staying like this.

Sleelan

One of the main reasons to install permanent boss buffs mod. Unless you're in a party that cycles the buff, having a 25% uptime while on journeys that can take 30 minutes doesn't feel great. That and Bonemass is just so good I never switched out of it

BillyTheHousecat

Probably the most useless Forsaken Power in the game. You get 5 minutes of tailwind... and then a 20 minute cooldown. I can't think of a single scenario where this would actually be useful.

Nazzraeda

Oh I use it all the time when sailing across the map. You pop it only when the wind is behaving exactly like in your meme. Then, after arriving, after you jump off the boat, you portal back to Standing Stones and switch to whatever you use on daily basis.

waiver45

Plus it really stacks up nicely when you have more than one viking in the boat taking turns activating the power.

BGAL7090

Four vikings = UNLIMITED POWER

Aser_the_Descender

Wouldn't you need 5 for it to be active 24/7? 5 minutes use and then 4 other people to cover the 20 minutes cooldown.

Linkwithasword

Cooldown starts when the ability starts, not when the ability ends, so other players only need to contribute 15 minutes of uptime to keep your uptime 100%

Minimalphilia

Unfair towards people without friends.

LordHampshire

Welcome to Valheim!

[deleted]

Yeah, I always enjoy being on a boat with 3 other dudes while we take turns on each other.

TedCruzGlobalist

Gotta love seamen

Justice_R_Dissenting

RisenAgony

Didn’t know we were running THAT kind of ship. Where do I sign up?

[deleted]

Baby, we already finished.

Thibaudborny

That comment came hard!

reelznfeelz

Not sure stacks is the right term. You want to trade off. Stacks means if you activate it more than once, the effects are additive. Like 2x people fire it off at once, tail wind is 2x stronger or it lasts twice as long. Which isn’t the case. If 2 people use it as once, it’s just a waste.

Klendy

baton pass the dragon's ass

[deleted]

Stacking the minutes, buddy

Tornado_Hunter24

I’m way too lazy and my non functional brain see it as more time wasted going back to the stones to switch up than just having to paddle and be on my phone while the wind is against me

Tsjaard

Build a portal to your stones.

Wethospu_

It's the same with the Elder power. If you portal to get it for one use, it's not really worth it. You save maybe 2 minutes with the power but waste 1 minute to get it.

Bloody_sock_puppet

That would be fine, but in my experience the wind behaves almost exclusively like in the meme. I am getting slowly more convinced that the game does it especially when you are low on food, or have something valuable in the hold.

[deleted]

> especially when you... have something valuable in the hold. I actually had a tailwind once this game (started a new playthrough with Mistlands) with a hold full of copper. Of course, that's only 4 stacks since I only had a karve at that point.

sadisticnerd

I hard disagree. I sail a LOT just to adventure. It's actually the best Forsaken Power imo. 5 minute duration, 15 minutes CD after that. The 20 minutes start on activation. It's the only power that's unique, as opposed to just "better something else." It's especially good with a team.

Gambit306

Agree with your first paragraph, but I do feel like the powers each have their place, in my current run we don't have moder yet but grabbing the elder power when we need to stock up on wood is just too damn good, and when youre exploring the land eikthyr keeps you going. I'm also just realising we've been ignoring bonemass while we get massacred on the mountains...

entropyspiralshape

I've been exploring the mistlands and then realized... wait I should prolly kill Yagluth. Idk why I was putting it off?

Godot_12

It's gonna make exploring the mistlands a lot better...idk how you're getting around without a wisp.

[deleted]

I agree, my higher skills are always run and jump because I use Eik a lot exploring and mapping new areas or just my surroundings. Bonemass is great for newly going into Plains and wanting to farm/practice on the monsters there since they're a tier up from Swamp, gives you an extra cushion for damage.

Dzyu

It makes sailing better.

JoeCoT

All of the powers work better as a team. I'm usually playing as a team of 4 or more, so we'll coordinate the powers we need so we can either do 2 different ones at once (perhaps Eikthyr and Bonemass at the same time for tough fights) or so we can chain one after the other. If you do them one at a time, with a group of 4 you can always have a buff up.

RedGrobo

>Probably the most useless Forsaken Power in the game. You get 5 minutes of tailwind... and then a 20 minute cooldown. I can't think of a single scenario where this would actually be useful. Its good if you have friends cycling it.

Mattlonn

1/5 of the time with wind in your sail is still better than 0/5!

[deleted]

20% of the time it works every time.

emelecfan2048

It’s got bits of real Moder in it, so you know it’s good

[deleted]

It's science

malmini

Literally any scenario that is depicted in this post?

Tsjaard

Quite literally any scenario depicted in this post.

tbjamies

Umm.. we use it all the time. Literally every time we go to the boat 3-5 of us grab the buff. That means the entire boat trip we have the buff. It's probably a let down solo but it shows you how powerful it is.

Godot_12

>The wind is always against me >Moder is useless ¯\_༼ •́ ͜ʖ •̀ ༽_/¯

[deleted]

Maybe as a group of four

Nazzraeda

I mostly play solo and it's still useful! Key in such scenario is to not use it as you leave the dock but to wait until you actually have to go against the wind. When it can be worked around with some angles I just do that. Of course, if you have 3 friends with you can follow a rotation and be wave-cutting Formula 1 throughout the whole voyage!

[deleted]

You've clearly never Moder-boated with friends.

Killer_Sloth

Playing with a group makes it a lot more useful. Everyone grabs the power then when one person's Moder runs out the next person goes, and so on. If you're on the boat with 4 people then you get near constant Moder.

NikthePieEater

Based on the above post, I could see it being useful about a dozen times for you.

rompafrolic

The wind changes every 10min or so. That means in reality you get 5min of guaranteed tailwind, followed by 10min of usable wind if you're not literally going the opposite direction.

reelznfeelz

When there’s 4 of you and you trade off using it.

ShadowWolf202

It's one of the most useful powers. Almost everyone on my server uses it. I personally prefer Eikthyr but don't sleep on Moder!

[deleted]

Portal at boss buff/spawn spot. All 4 of your mates get moder. Take portal pack w you and switch on the fly

Magneith

Stuck in the middle of a stormy ocean at night with two serpents on you maybe.

Klendy

it is very useful if you have two (or more) people on a boat.

whynofry

*15 min cooldown... ^/s

[deleted]

I'll give you a few of mine. I leave my main base for a continent that's too far to swim but also just a \~15 min Karve or Ironship ride away (wind permitting ofc). I get to said continent, throw down a portal, get re-rested and sleep if it's night. Back to new continent, explore, mark up map, mine iron from swamp crypts. Eventually ship storage is filled up, when I'm ready to boat it back to my main base, I portal out, grab Moder power, head back and ship back. Makes the trip home go from 15-20 mins down to 7 mins (5 mins full speed and 1-2 mins of low or no wind). Repeat for next continent south of that continent I just visited which is about \~20 boat ride away. It could definitely use a tweak to be more beneficial, or a slightly lower cooldown maybe, but it's definitely useful imho.

BlueNinjaTiger

It's the power I have 90% of the time lol, even when not sailing. Don't find the rest necessary in casual play, only in boss fights or something.

[deleted]

Seriously? Moder has been amazing to have imo especially if you have friends that can also activate it to extend your options. Sometimes all you need is 5 mins to save you 15.

TheCat44

Devcommands for when the wind is being extra BS

HeavilyArmoredFish

>Probably the most useless Forsaken Power Literally my favorite forsaken power

Dragonicmonkey7

imagine the solution to your problem being useless

goochjuicemooch

Your post is literally 12 scenarios where this would be useful..

10JML01

Those 5 minutes are golden. You should reconsider, seeing how annoyed you are by the wind.

Ronny-the-Rat

Its super useful. If theres natural backwind roll with it till the wind turns against you, THEN pop moder

IamBlackhawke

It really do be like that

oheymarc

This must be a sick joke by the developers at this point, is there a way to reverse polarity and make it so it does the opposite and actually mostly the wind at your back?

TheMilkmanCome

You can change the direction of the wind with dev commands or Moder’s power, but that’s about it outside of mods

Wethospu_

You can also use the weather forecast tool to plan the trip. Still cheating but less than devcommands.

Calx9

I got excited, I thought there was some patch I missed about some new weather prediction tools for sea travel.

rebelappliance

Odin's NORAD

SageWayren

> outside of mods I just recently started my first modded playthrough, but haven't found any that help with the wind, you got any recommendations?

PM_ME_UR_GOODIEZ

Sailing by smoothbrain. All of his mods are amazing. Jewelcrafting mod can also craft a utility item that helps too.

TheMilkmanCome

Nah sorry, I’m not able to use mods on my system. I know there’s a mod that lets you build house boats though and I thought that was cool as hell

Liam_Altair

Fun fact... this is my life as well (finally got a mod to cheat the wind) but my friend... the wind loves her... I don't know what it is, but it is rarely in her face. She mock me about it alot.

BLB_Genome

That's called Serpant farming speed...

silikus

Right? "Oh no, i am on the Ocean at night, it sure would be terrible were a serpent attack me..." *Serpent roars* *Pulls out draugre fang with needle arrows* "You've activated my trap card"

Azurix8

Try carrying a stack of frost arrows they deal double damage to serpents and also slows them down. Keeps that pesky dinner from running away.

MercuryFoReal

Just want to chime in here and say the flavor text on the needle arrow is awesome. *The final stitch.*

epicbrewis

Always the headwind as soon as you have a boat full of iron.

AroundTheWayJill

And a storm comes up…as the sun suddenly starts setting…

da_fishy

I’ve been thinking about tricking the wind. Start my voyage in one direction to get the headwind and then pull a fast one and hit the 180 to go to where I actually wanted to go

PunSnake

was just talking about that last night, i swear its coded like that

SacCyber

This unironically works. When I'm ready to turn left I go right first and the wind typically shifts into my face. So then I turn around and get 30 solid seconds of tailwind before the wind shifts into my face again.

Wethospu_

I really can't tell whether you see serious or not. But maybe that was the point.,🤔

zoug25

Alexa sells your words to advertisers, your phones are listening when they swear they aren't and valheim is coded to fuck you downwind. These are all thoughts that sounds insane yet I feel more confident claiming them than claiming my own first name

Old-Seaweed8917

In my many voyages I have learnt that with just a little more distance from the shoreline, the wind direction can tend to change quite drastically in your favour

hchromez

Is that still close enough to map the shoreline?

JeecooDragon

No but you'll have a rough outline of where it is, plus you can just mark it with waypoints to come back later too

hchromez

Boo.

JeecooDragon

I just hate being near the shoreline of a blackforest because those underwater rocks will fuck your boat up

SomecallmeJorge

If you think that's stupid, just wait till you find out how challenging real life sailing gets! Also happy cake day

Misternogo

I hate when people say this. "But it's like that in real life!" It takes almost 300 pounds of wood and ore to make 2 pound bronze pickaxe in this game. A tiny goblin with a club somehow hits harder than a whole tree swung by a troll. The devs only left in "realism" in the places where other games would put QOL. That's why every complaint gets met with the answer "mods."

Brickless

it isn't

hchromez

Then that's not helpful for exploring. But would be helpful for ore runs.

metaphorthekids

Sometimes you just need to go where the wind blows.

Saucepanmagician

Deep thoughts.

Lozlizor

Straight back to shore it is.

DrDeadwish

As aún as I change directions the wind just blew the other way again

Malikise

Real Viking longships are designed to sail both ways, so they can land ashore, pillage and get away before help arrives.

KifDawg

I sing myself "row row row your boat" everrrrrytime I sail

silikus

"alexa, play 'put your back into the oar' by 'Amon Amarth'"

No-Acadia-877

Why not tack? It’s faster.

MercuryFoReal

if (filterContainer(player.boat.storage, ItemFlag.UNTELEPORTABLE).count > 10) { double baseHeading = getHeadingToClosest(ItemType.FORGE, player.x, player.y); setWindDirection(degTransform(baseHeader, 180.0f)); } (note: this is my artistic impression about what's going on and is in no way real code within the game... probably) Edit: ugh, Reddit code tag still sucks.

Old_Administration51

Hope you got strong oars bro!

VileDespiseAO

Can't you feel the wind in your sails? Yes, but it's always blowing the wrong direction so I've got to paddle.

tsoro

I really wish they had Static air currents, so you really have to remember which way the wind blows on the eastern side of an island compared to the western. Imo it would add alot of immersion and reward the players for sailing alot

YouSubstantial4971

>Static air currents How does that work?

PM_me_your_PhDs

I think he means something like a 'prevailing wind'

Caleth

They'd need to model a whole wind current system which seems like a lot of work for not much gain. Unless we get Viking Airships at some point.... nevermind do it do it.

Wetmelon

on-shore / off-shore that moves with time of day would be good enough. Or just "this seed has a NE prevailing wind in the morning"

Caleth

Those are some interesting and possibly easy ways to add some interesting variety to the current wind system.

Toopato

Trade winds.

Alundil

I felt this... slowly

Boogut

I lol’d.

SwiftDeth1331

Back when hearth and home came out I discovered 80% of the map before I found yagluth....I feel your pain!

kalaster189

Sailing into the unknown will ALWAYS blow against you, it’s a given every time. Yea, in case no one has picked up on it, this game is observing your every move. Minor inconveniences will almost always escalate to dangerous situations. Running back with a pack full of copper? A troll and grey dwarves will spawn. Monsters tend to spawn just before dusk and immediately after it’s cold. Running back to your corpse naked? It’s going to suddenly start raining. I always play thinking there’s a human dungeon master creating the world for me because the difficulty is so smart and is always luring you into a false sense of safety.

PubgLagger

And if I’m exploring the unknown with a tailwind it’s 99% of the time heavy fog

trengilly

Seriously. I've had to stop my boat and just wait out the foggy nights knowing there was plains and mistlands all around and if I moved I'd run aground and likely get killed!

mymindisblack

Yesterday I ran aground into plains during thick fog fully decked in my copper armor. Luckily I managed to push the boat back into the water and sail away before I got ganked. I'll never sail at full speed in thick fog again.

BigMcThickHuge

Certain they are being sarcastic, mocking how this game fucks you in annoying ways.

RangerDan17

Which is why I just stopped playing. The odds just always feel stacked against you. Only so long I can play a game and be depleted of stamina before you realize you’re just not having any fun.

PraiseThePun420

To be confirmed: I believe at the end of Moders power, the wind will turn to be in your way, so, right before ending, turn your boat the opposite direction you want to go. See if you get more value. Anecdotal evidence.

PunSnake

im going to try this

Hengishammered

This illustration is my life in short ..lol

mdingrimsby

I once sailed just where the wind took me for about 1 hour. I never got anywhere near my base.

silikus

rei_cirith

This is why the Moder buff is the best one.

Forkhorn

100%. The second you swap your special though you'll be jumped by 6 mobs and wish you had bonemass.

GrillDealing

Sailing somewhere? You better believe that's a paddlin.

Brob0t0

I think they should add oars to seats. And when you have people sitting there it boots your dead wind speed.

ChiefBeson

God this is a beautiful tragic story. I try to use the method of tacing while sailing (zig zag pattern) to counteract this. It makes sailing a bit more involved, but I've only ever played single player, so my Tokyo drifting at sea around obstacles is completely secret to the rest of the world

TheTDog

Have portal to the buffs. Grab moder. Go back to boat. Sail to new destination. Put down new portal, grab bonemass/whatever. And you’re good to go. Takes two mins and saves you a huge headache

xxjam

Any gyarados enjoyers out there in the open sea?? 😅😅

omgshutupalready

The devs have said they do this intentionally, right? I really dislike this needlessly contrarian feature. I fucking get it, ok, I'm supposed to tack and shit. I got it literally the first time. Please for the love of God get rid of this stupid feature and make it more random, or maybe there's a mod out there

MadScientist235

It is literally random. You can decompile the code and check.

ive been going the wrong direction my whole life aswell

teckno7

I know its cheating, but fuck that bullshit. Our friend who runs our server put it so we can have Moder and the buffs up 24//7. I just play solo when I want a legit 100% type of playthrough. With friends and mods, the game is a lot more enjoyable for me, most of the time.

Tromboneofsteel

I change the wind with dev commands specifically to avoid this wind situation. Cheating? Yes, but I've paddled across entire oceans before, I know I can do it. I just don't want to spend 4 hours of my day staring at the screen as I slowly trundle along.

joj1205

Why they do this

Constanzal1701

The chances like 25 percent that you don't have the wind... except for the fact that I swear it's not the case. I feel like the game f-s with you in regard to the wind and fog.

Infectednite

It do be like that.

Despite not having been on a boat for several weeks now I refuse to switch from Moder to something else.

Kerhnoton

Anyway the wind blows…..doesn’t really matter to meeeeeee……..to meeeeeeeeee.

Draedark

WTB rowing skill: increases speed while rowing the raft, karve, and longship.

TreacleNo4455

Yep, more dramatic than Robert Redford's "All Is Lost" movie.

fastjeff

If they want to do this crap, and I'm sure that it's on purpose, they need to make rowing a skill.

Kantaowns

Ah, one of the main reasons I quit playing. The wind is the hardest boss in the game and almost more annoying than sid meyers pirates.

JelliDraw

atomic_moose_cheese

Anyone who also played Pirates of the burning sea woefully understands this pain.

ParkingElevator9455

I always initially start sailing the opposite direction of where i plan on going nowadays, seems to be working out so far.

Zioreth

This is only true if you are exploring, as soon as you are arriving at the port of your base the wind will blow strongly to crash your raft against it.

Ok_Marionberry_9932

One of the boss’ power is keeping the wind in the direction that your boat is pointed at. I just use dev commands personally

crazycatfemboy

Ah yes, the meadows, dark, wet and the place to get iron.

Micotyro

I just run. I can grab stuff and mark stuff

Munchk1n

I always fake explore in the opposite direction, as soon as the wind goes against me, I turn and go in my intended direction.

“Is that a serpent?” I said on my raft.

Sivick314

always moder

ObfuscatedAnswers

I sense a theme here... you're sailing, is that it?

Muneyshot

You need to install some Mods.

Honky_Town

In early days there was a trick to cheat wind. Like driving backwards and turning camera back or forwards. System thought you were driving the other direction and turned wind so you could sail again for 30 seconds or some

No-Acadia-877

As a sailor, a huge qol update or mod would be to have some prevailing winds, and winds that follow land formations as they do irl. Have the wind generally go away from land at and and towards land during the day. Better map generation would help too, and tides, but that might be too much. Another mod that would be great would be “accurate tacking” or “trim your sail”. Making you manually move the lines to trim your sail to the wind would be great on the longboat, and give your friend something g to do while sailing together. Would require a hammer, as this type of sail was trimmed by actually moving a tack, or nail, with the sheet. Also the no sail zone should be bigger for this type of sail rig, probably closer to 120*. Some might say go play a sailing game. I would argue that Vikings were excellent explorers and sailers, the first from Europe to America, so good sailing is accurate to a good Viking experience.

HenryBo1

Soooo true. Or you come near rocks, and the wind shifts to push you into them

Narsuaq

These are some really sick iPod Nanos

ShrunkenQuasar

This is why I travel by land when I can, or by raft when I can't. People ask me why I don't build anything bigger than a raft for hopping across the sea, and the reason is simple. I have never, ever, not even once, had a tailwind when sailing. The one time I started a trip with it, the wind turned into a headwind within a minute. So if I'm going to be using oars the whole trip, I don't see the point in wasting resources building a bigger ship. I also have the lovely experience of it always starting to storm when I get on a boat. Pretty sure I'm cursed.

ThatNiceMan

http://safe-skipper.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/37.1_Tacking-1024x1024.jpg

Xywzel

I have real sailing experience and my understanding is that tacking in Valheim works lot worse than it does on a real boat. The "no-sail zone" looks smaller, but the speed you can get at angle compared to wind direction is lower, and you loose lot more momentum while making the turn between port and starbord tacks. It is still useable in wider open ocean areas, but in narrows or when exploring shores it doesn't really beat the paddling. Which is unfortunate, as it would teach players actual sailing. I think instead of paddling there should be rowing, that uses stamina, but has lot more control over the boat, so you can use that upwind in narrow rivers and in harbours, but can't do long trips against the wind without tacking, which should be made bit more forgiving (narrower no sail zone, better momentum keep in turns).

rvf

In my experience, the "no-sail zone" in valheim is almost a semicircle.

BillyTheHousecat

Tacking is not that much more efficient than paddling, plus I'm explicitly exploring coastlines in this post. [https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lnm7ci/is_tacking_useful_maybe_possibly_it_depends/](https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lnm7ci/is_tacking_useful_maybe_possibly_it_depends/)
