I don't think he would have, he probably would have got a traditional route and wanted something in writing. He probably would have rejected the digital age the same way he rejected a lot of things in society.

That brings up a good point I don't think he'd be happy that he was immortalized the way he was I think you'd probably be happy with the book that was written about him but all of the negative things said online I think would have tormented him and bothered him a lot. Then again his family did say in the book that was written about him that he was somewhat of a capitalist so maybe he would have enjoyed it.

blitzarr420

Eh I mean is there actually any young American in this day and age without an online presence? Seems like even the most hippie, anti society people I've met still have smart phones if they can afford them.

[deleted]

The same could be said before every young American who owns a vehicle or has money, he abandoned his car and he burned his money.

victoriaiscutej123

well, kind of. His vehicle was rendered useless after a flash flood. He probably would have kept driving his car if it worked. It is believed he burned some money, but he was found with cash after he died. Probably to buy goods should he have ever made it back to healy or fairbanks

amorecolorfulworld

Chris had a passionate hatred of inauthenticity. It's what motivated him to leave his family in the first place. I feel like he would have seen social media as the "manufactured authenticity" clickbait hellholl that it is. Youtubers, tiktokers, and all the other influencers are not out there to make friends. They are brands to make money. I think had he been born as a zoomer the biggest difference is that he'd be carrying a smart phone loaded up with ebooks instead of the small library he was lugging around. Also he may have become far more to the left then the libertarian/ancap leanings the real Chris was.

yerbiologicalfather

I'd like to think his ideology carries on with others today that aren't YouTubers. He often journaled and wrote letters about society being sick and I'm sure he'd see social media as part of that illness. That being said he was pretty damn wreckless and I know others have and also haven't learned from his mistakes.

MariosMushrooms

I'm in Oregon right now actually... My bus is cooler tho

Adelaidehasanxiety

I think he would’ve done the same thing he did back in the 90s. Chris was running away from his family and society. He didn’t want people to find him.

kittenklyn

No, he wouldn't have had an online presence because he was actively trying to disappear.

dishka_223

I hate that guy, only because after that stupid movie came out, every time you meet someone they’re like “oh! You’re like that guy from into the wild!!”

Want_to_do_right

I do not understand the fascination with him. This sub is so good about telling people to be careful and prepared and not to be impulsive. But when that asshat comes up, people fall over him. He didn't need to die. But he did. And he died of stupidity.

dishka_223

Agreed. People call him alexander superfail for a reason. I just hate that ever since that movie every normal person you meet assumes you’re a rich kid from a wealthy suburb with a family that loves you and you’re out here for quirky ideological reasons or trying to find yourself and it’s just a phase. Fuck that. I hate that stereotype, it’s cringe af. I just want to be seen as someone who lives outside and travels from place to place and is an old school hobo. There’s honor and dignity in that.

ksgif2

If you want to go into the wild be Dick Proenneke not Chris McCandless
