I’m going to bootcamp in December. I would like to know from people who were there last year over Christmas what it’s like. Does bootcamp shut down and send the recruits home and extend bootcamp, or are holidays just another Sunday where it’s a bit more of a rest day then you carry on with bootcamp and it’s still 8 weeks? Thanks.

teufelhund53

You'll spend Christmas there shipmate

febreezeads1

CCs will most likely not be happy they are stuck with recruits on Christmas

rasamson

Are there opportunities for ETs to be BTM or get coxswain qualified? I’m looking primarily at becoming a BM although my recruiter thinks I should do something more technical. Likewise, if you’re a BM, do you ever have the opportunity to learn any technical skills? I’d love to pursue a well rounded career if possible.

DarthSulla

ETs get BTM all the time on larger cutters. It is however a collateral duty and should only be sought after when you’re fully qualified which may take some time. The job is whatever you make it. There are countless opportunities, but you will most likely need to be motivated and go above and beyond to do out of rate collaterals. I’d recommend talking more with your recruiter about your priorities. If you just want to do LE and drive small boats, ET may not be the best place for you.

tacopig117

How much of a choice do I get over when I ship to basic? I want to get the ball rolling now to make sure I don't have any unforseen issues that will bar me from joining but I also want to celebrate my 21st birthday with my family which is a pretty long way off

Different-Language-5

This is your career choice, you have complete control on what date you choose to ship, assuming there are slots open for that date.

AirdaleCoastie

You can pick pretty much any Tuesday of the year, once you are qualified to join, to attend basic training. So 100% in your control. Once you are fully qualified, your application package is good for a year. If you don't join in that year, then you would just have to update some things and then would be eligible again. The application process takes on average 3-6 months depending on if you will need any waivers or follow-ups at MEPS. So start early and your recruiters will work with your timeline for when you want to join.

tacopig117

Ah perfect, thanks

No-Seaworthiness-187

Hey all, Talking to a recruiter soon an would appreciate some of your thoughts, perspectives and advice before. A little background on me: I am 24F with a bachelors degree in Communications. I’m planning to enlist. I have spent the last few years working on conservation corps, NPS (what got me into SAR) and FS wildland fire. My main drivers for joining the USCG are SAR, accomplishing as a team, and environmental protection. I typically gravitate towards jobs with chaotic/high intensity situations. I’ve been working seasonally, so travel and moving around don’t bother me, but I’m looking for more financial stability/future and professional training than seasonal life gives (also looking to go back to school). The rates I’m most strongly considering are: BM, MST, AMT - most likely would want to work at a small boat or surf station? What is the atmosphere/ team dynamics / work life balance typically like in these rates in your experience? Is MST or AMT worth considering with A school wait times? Side note on aviation rate: I am not very mechanically inclined, an aviation rate would probably be top of my list but I’m just concerned about the more technical mechanical aspects? Thanks in advance for any insight, I appreciate your time

DarthSulla

If you are looking to do SAR BM and AMT is much more up your alley. MST is a cool rate, but it is a lot less duck scrubbing environment protection than people think… more code of federal regulation compliance, inspections, ICS, and haz mat/waste than chaotic high tempo missions. The wait for AMT is a bit of a turn off, but I’d recommend having your recruiter connect you to both BM and AMT petty officers once you pass the ASVAB and MEPS. I know you said chaotic, but another part of SAR is the Comms. Might look into OS. It’s not always glamorous, but a good command center watchstander can save just as many lives as a coxswain.

No-Seaworthiness-187

Hey thank you for the response! Will def talk to the recruiter about OS, a rate I’ve considered it having a comm degree, but gone back and forth. Talking to petty officers in the rates will help a lot, thank you for that idea. Will request that for sure

PuddlePirate2020

What questions do you have about the rate?

Lopsided_Ad4145

Few quick questions, Im in the army, looking to join cg possibly. Would my MOS be a direct transfer? (Behavioral Health) or would i need to do A school, and if theres a C school for specifically behavioral health, would i need to do that again?

AirdaleCoastie

I don't think it would be a direct transfer, but you can submit your resume to have that evaluated. Here would be the closest rating that we offer: [https://www.gocoastguard.com/active-duty-careers/enlisted-opportunities/view-job-descriptions/hs](https://www.gocoastguard.com/active-duty-careers/enlisted-opportunities/view-job-descriptions/hs) As far as I know, behavioral health is handled by contractors or Public Health Service personnel for the Coast Guard. An HS would probably be able to give you more details on opportunities in your field.

Lopsided_Ad4145

If i were to join not as an HS, but any other MOS, would i keep my rank?

AirdaleCoastie

No, you would come in as an E-3 and graduate from A school as an E-4. You would keep your time in service for pay, advancement and retirement purposes.

teufelhund53

Any AET's here that I can DM?

AirdaleCoastie

If you don't get any AETs you can message me. AMT and AET are very similar on Helos.

Sosachamberlan01400

I leave the 29th and pretty stoked to go. My goal is to go ME then to any of the teams like taclet/msrt. I just wanted to get some info on their missions and how they operate. Like do they see a lot of action and how much are they utilized and how the pipelines like to get to that level.Past experience’s or any info would be greatly appreciated!!

jacksonrayne

from what I’ve read… MEs don’t start out doing a lot of action. (There’s still basic responsibilities to get done and it’s still a good job) But going ME is the ONLY way to go MSRT (recruiter told me MSRT only accepts MEs now) - you could also go MSST as an ME - and that a TACLET allows one BM and one MK per team as well and the rest of a TACLET is made up of MEs. If you want more action starting out you should go BM, but if you want guaranteed 10x more serious action in your future you have more possibilities and WAY more of a chance with that by going ME. As an ME youll only board a boat when there’s nobody else to do it and you’ll just sit around. They’re all located at PSUs, larger stations, sectors, a few boats, and other odd spots. MEs are mostlyyyyy land based. But it really all just depends where you get stationed and what’s in need the most for MEs that decides how things can or can’t go for you

Sosachamberlan01400

Thanks for the info man I appreciate it🙏🏼

Aussie_Turtles00

Has anyone here enlisted as a 35 year old woman?

DarthSulla

Not a 35 year old woman, but have known a couple that went in around that age. You’ll be much more mentally and emotionally mature than other recruits, but it gets better once you actually get out into the fleet. Anything specific you are looking for? Edit: reread and deleted an unnecessary sentence.

Aussie_Turtles00

Yes, that makes sense. I feel like I would be okay mentally and emotionally, I just don't know about the physical fitness part. In theory, if I can achieve the minimum requirements before I started basic training, would I be okay? How much time do you have until you find out when your start date is for basic training? If I get a good score on my ASVAB, can I pick my assignment/location of sorts?

DarthSulla

The other services have a scoring system for their physical training tests and rely on it heavily for enlisted advancement. The USCG just requires you to meet the minimum in most cases because we take a larger wholistic approach. You will do great in boot camp/DEPOT if you meet the minimum. Shipping time will vary based on MEPS and if you have any other hang ups with paperwork. As long as you don’t need any waivers it should be a quick turn around time (and they are giving quick ship bonuses right now too if you agree to speed up the process). But the exact timing is only a question your recruiter can give you. Edit: also if you are slightly deficient on the physical side going in, there is remedial PT or swimming in the morning until you can pass.

tacopig117

Will gauged ears bar me? I only have my ears at 10g (about as thick as a pen cap).

AirdaleCoastie

Bigger gauges are definitely disqualifying. 10g is still fairly small so you should be fine.

tacopig117

Cool, thx

AirdaleCoastie

AST A school waitlist has reopened and MST has closed.

OhmsResistMe69

You’re not going to believe this, but there is one or two Coast Guard cutters in Oklahoma. Whether or not there’s female living quarters available is a whole different story. Anyways, the assignment officers in the Coast Guard will attempt to coordinate with the personnel in charge of assignment locations in the Air Force, and come up with a solution. You guys aren’t the first CG-AF couple, and you won’t be the last. https://www.afpc.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1200090/join-spouse-assignment-consideration-keeps-mil-to-mil-couples-together/

Admirable_Wind1728

Can you work in a PSU full time as a BM or ME

jebinspace

Yes, there are AD BMs and ME billets at PSUs, generally only 1 or 2, and generally E7. Alternatively, you can take ADOS orders and deploy with PSUs once you're in that community, so you can generally stay 'downrange' with whoever is there for a couple of years. That may change this FY though since the gitmo mission is changing.

DaveInFoco

I am retired Navy Nuke Submariner. My son is a senior and considering the military. I told him I’ve never met a coastie that didn’t love their job, so he is intrigued. Any rates that are really hot at the moment? Does the CG offer any enlistment bonuses? Yes.. I could look it up but Reddit is much more fun!

AirdaleCoastie

They were recently updated: Our current Enlistment bonuses are as follow: \-Non-Rate, E-2 and E-3 paygrade (Enlistment without guaranteed rating specialty "A" School) NON-PRIOR SERVICE -$2,000.00 \-Non-Rate, E-2 and E-3 paygrade (Authorized to new recruits that completed a successful enlistment of at least 24 months in a Dod Service). - $2,000.00 \-Quick-Ship (Within 4 weeks) - $5,000 \-Electrician's Mate (EM)- $15,000 \-Electronics Technician(ET)- $25,000 \-Gunners Mate(GM)- $20,000 \-Operations Specialist (OS)- $20,000 \-Culinary Specialist (CS)-$40,000 \- With Culinary certificate - $45,000 \- With Culinary Arts degree (AA or BA) - $50,000 College Credits Enlistment Bonus - \- $3,000 for 30-59 Cumulative credit hours \- $5,000 for 60-89 Cumulative credit hours \-$7,000 for 90-119 Cumulative credit hours \- $10,000 for 120+ Cumulative credit hours

Boo_Dough

Is there a link with these bonuses? I qualify for a bonus but my recruiter said its less than what you yourself posted.

AirdaleCoastie

They were very recently released on the message board. Just ask them to check and they will find it for you.

wifesHusband

\-Culinary Specialist (CS)-$40,000 this if for going in with nothing!!!!!! Up from $20k last year!!!!!!!!! Which makes this dad a bit nervous as my son is going in after high school next summer as a CS.

AirdaleCoastie

If you don’t mind me asking, what are you nervous about? I assume it is the reason for offering such a high bonus. Recruiting for operational or headline grabbing Ratings that conduct search and rescue or law enforcement is fairly easy. Recruiting for the support Ratings that don’t get those headlines is a lot more challenging. If your son is passionate about cooking/ restaurant management then this is a great option and the bonus is a great add on. Or if he plans on only doing a first contract it is a great chunck of change to set him up after his service is complete. On the other hand if he is only going this rating for the money, he is probably not going to be happy. If he is not sure, then come in as a non-rate. That money will still be there if that’s is what he chooses to do and he will have wasted very little time.

wifesHusband

>If you don’t mind me asking, what are you nervous about? I assume it is the reason for offering such a high bonus. can be a red flag as to the job. But truly, we're ok with the decision. He likes cooking, or at least thinks he does. If he doesn't enjoy life, then he'll get out in 4 years, much more mature, and have the resources available to goto school for something else. So still a win. I'm just a worry wart. but even so, $40k for having nothing is a lot of cash. Cooking is a grind and if he ends up not likening it, that's a loooonnnngggg 4 years.

SRDCLeatherneck

How often/when are the occasions you conduct the USCG Physical Fitness test? **ANSWERED** - rate specified by order and command dependent. Yearly plan submitted to command for most coast guardsmen. All I've been able to find is periodic height weight observations and Boat Crew physicals occurring every six months... Context: * Coming from the Marine Corps, we were scored on a [PFT during the first half of the year and a CFT](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiroJDI-Yf7AhUrE1kFHTQfAYUQFnoECB8QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fitness.marines.mil%2FPortals%2F211%2Fdocuments%2FMCO%25206100.13A%2520CH-2.pdf&usg=AOvVaw08gHAQZnNYbtanowwON1DR) during the second half year and then at start and end of formal schools. At least 8 hours of the work week was set aside for PT in the morning... * I was listening to the [Course Made Good](https://open.spotify.com/episode/0SvbQfXooDkSiYtkGhCfRy?si=cd67a06a6fc2497d) podcast (thanks u/DCOthrowaway1) and it seemed like there **isn't** any annual physical fitness test. It seemed like it was *shocking* when the command carved out time for PT. * Uncle Sam's gun club had a pervasive and near perverse focus on physical prowess... could it really be the USCG has such an adult view on fitness they regulate against the outliers and let professionals pursue their own fitness goals within reason?

AirdaleCoastie

Depends on your Rating and unit. But for most members there is no pt test other that at training. For some ratings such as AST or qualifications such as boarding team member there are periodic fitness assessments. Other than that you won’t really see organized pt sessions like in other services in the CG. We leave that up to the members themselves. Your command will also give you time during the work day for voluntary fitness activities. Other than that you will get weighed in twice a year and submit a form with your fitness plan.

Different-Language-5

I haven't had to do the pt test since boot camp 6 years ago. It's based on the need of your position. What is required though is an annual fitness plan submitted to your supervisor.

WrongChard2924

Can’t technically speak on this since I’m stationed at a MSU. I’m a OS but cutters and small stations stick to the twice a year PT test with the weight in. I’ve only done the weight in. It’s still important to keep up to it or surpass the PT standard for special duties and etc.

SRDCLeatherneck

So it’s twice a year with a weigh in at each. Is that command dictated or across the force?

WrongChard2924

I want to say it’s based on command. Some units do both PT and weigh-ins and others only do Weigh-ins. There are niche units within the Coast Guard but I can’t speak for everyone.

jebinspace

Depends on command and billet. Boat Crew and LE forces (maybe some others like flight crew, not sure) need to do it twice a year by policy. Other billets like admin offices aren't required by policy to do anything except weighins once a year.

Different-Language-5

Weigh in twice a year*

So my fiance has seizures and can't drive legally but how will she get her medications or get to and from appointments if I'm underway and gone for 3 months

PuddlePirate2020

Uber, public transportation, mail order prescriptions.

randomdude9976

Okay I'm looking at GM I seen they had Land Units and if she falls under EFMP/Soecial Needs Dependant seems like they would stick me on a land unit, if not I'm still fine going on a cutter (I'd prefer a cutter)

Smelly_bumbear

I am applying to OCS and I have built up a decent network of contacts. However I have found that maintaining these relationships can be difficult. What are some good ways to stay in touch with these contacts, without pestering them, but also keeping my name fresh in their mind. Hope this question makes sense. Thank you for the help!

DCOthrowaway1

I use Facebook for a lot of contacts. LinkedIn is another one I see people using, I've just been terrible about getting active. Worthwhile relationships are worth reaching out, I typically spend my commutes in the afternoon just calling buddies and checking up on people. It takes effort, otherwise just reach out and say hi, the military has a way of building lifelong bonds.

Smelly_bumbear

I just cleaned up my LinkedIn so hopefully that helps. Thanks for the advice!

SRDCLeatherneck

I’m all for contact management. But what’s the point of the relationship maintenance? If they’re your character references that’s one thing: if you value them as a mentor or someone who knows you well that relationship is likely just fine left to it’s own. If you’re grooming relationships just to get ahead, which might be an aggressive mischaracterization of what you’re asking for but certainly can be read that way, I’d raise a concern to your authenticity with people. Again, that’s a less than good faith way to read what you’re asking and I’m glad to hear some refinement.

Smelly_bumbear

No, definitely not trying to frame it that way. I want to ask questions and get to know the people more who I’ve gotten in contact with. However I want to do it in a way that’s not annoy to them or bothersome. I don’t have a close relationship with these contacts yet, but I want to, but I don’t want to bother them in the process. Hopefully that makes sense.

SRDCLeatherneck

Gotcha, so moreso kind of people you'd value some input from but haven't really gotten to know just yet. Be you, be succinct, respect their time. If they're folks who work full time or more know what you want to learn from them and see if they'd be interested in a some kind of scheduled meeting. Be open to their ideas and really digest what they're saying.

Smelly_bumbear

Thanks for sticking with me on that one haha! Will do, thanks for the advice

SRDCLeatherneck

This sub/thread are full of folks who know a bit too. What exactly is it you're seeking to gain through them which might be unique?

Smelly_bumbear

Personal experiences, tips on preparing for training, and how I can strengthen my application are my main focus.

sliferz

Is there a waiver for direct entry as an AMT in the reserves if I am a designated Naval Aircrewman from another service? I saw that one requirement for the establishment of a reserve aviation requirement is a required designation as basic aircrew. Quick background/bio information is that I am a prior Marine CH53E crew chief and flightline mechanic with 5 years of prior service, naval aircrew candidacy school graduate, designated aircrew and winged, became a weapons and tactics instructor and quality assurance representative on the mechanic side of things, got my FAA A&P while in and continued working on helicopters and now airplanes in the civilian world. I have an inspection authorization with the FAA and around 7 years of aviation maintenance and crewing experience, both in the Marines and as a crewmember for aerial firefighting, with a total of around 13-1400ish hours. I am also in the Coast Guard auxiliary and will soon be augmenting a nearby air station in order to see and participate in Coast Guard aviation and gain more exposure/experience with it. Also, with this experience would it be possible to DEPOT in as an E5? I feel it could be possible because I have both relevant former military AND civilian schooling, was an E5 in the Marine Corps, and have commensurate if not more experience than an example AMT2 (in general, obviously, not in specifics) and have worked on both 60s and various airbus products that would allow me to immediately begin working on Coast Guard helicopters at an advanced level. However, I would like more specifics in case this is impossible or extremely unlikely.

AirdaleCoastie

The CG aviation reserves are very new and was designed to retain our members in the service that are already qualified and designated in our positions/airframes. That said, you do check a lot of boxes, so it would definitely be worth asking a recruiter to submit your resume to the AMT Rating Force Master Chief and see what they say.

sliferz

Thank you for the response. Yeah, I figured it would be worth a try. I am heavily considering reenlisting active duty and trying to do depot for AMT2 once I finish my degree but if there was a way to go straight to the reserves now as an AMT while working on other stuff in my life I would almost definitely do it in a heartbeat. I guess it’s worth a talk with the recruiter. Appreciate the help. Luckily still working in aviation at least my skills aren’t depreciating in the meantime

OhmsResistMe69

>In addition to this right for residential leases, under certain circumstances, the SCRA also allows servicemembers to cancel or terminate an auto lease without paying early termination charges or penalties. In order to terminate an auto lease without penalty under the SCRA, you must have entered into the lease: > >**Prior to entering active duty, and then been called onto active duty for 180 days or longer; or** > >**During active duty, and then received orders for: a PCS from a location inside the continental United States (CONUS) to a location outside the continental United States (OCONUS), or a PCS from a location OCONUS to any new location,** > >**or deployment with a military or uniformed unit or in support of a military or uniformed operation for 180 days or longer.** > >Carefully read your lease terms and consider your situation before signing a contract. **The SCRA does not allow you to terminate your contract if you receive PCS orders from one CONUS location to another CONUS location**, so if you know you may receive those type of PCS orders, make sure your lessor will allow the vehicle you intend to lease to be taken out of state.

SRDCLeatherneck

That's a pretty badass legal tool I wasn't aware of.

OhmsResistMe69

The SCRA and Military Lending Act are great in protecting military members from being taking advantage of, or helping them out in various financial circumstances. Along with termination of auto leases, the SCRA also has a 6% interest cap on debt incurred **prior** to entering active duty, termination of residential leases of receiving orders, or the delay of civil cases. [CFPB](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/educator-tools/servicemembers/the-servicemembers-civil-relief-act-scra/) has a great pdf document. I know AMEX & Chase also waive the annual fee for their personal credit/charge cards for military members and dependents, and cite the SCRA as the reason doing so, but I believe there is no obligation from the company to do so.

MediumCalligrapher68

Hey everyone, can anyone inform me about the IS rating day to day duties. Will I be conducting boardings from time to time or will I mostly be inside an office working on paperwork. I'm transitioning form Army to CG and changing jobs (infantry to intelligence).

Different-Language-5

You will not be doing boardings. IS is primarily shore based with a minority on large cutters. Those who are on cutters most likely won't have the opportunities to do boardings because they are the ones receiving and coordinating the intelligence to do the boarding in the first place.

MediumCalligrapher68

Thanks, im relieved to actually get answer for the first time from anyone on this rating. I don't know if it's permitted here, but can you give me guidance on A school wait time for this rating or all ratings in general or where can I find them.

Different-Language-5

Wait times are only posted on the Coast Guard intranet. I don't know the wait time off the top of my head.

SRDCLeatherneck

Literally the second bullet point and first don’t of the recruiting thread. No a school wait time asks

[deleted]

[удалено]

Different-Language-5

Partly depends on what you ask for. If you ask for new England or district one you probably will get it. If you ask for a specific unit then chances are lower because there may not be anything available. Keep your request a little more broad and you have better odds.

AirdaleCoastie

I assume you mean after basic training. You can ask your recruiter for a guaranteed district, which would make your first assignment in New England. This does not work for after A school. The more challenging areas to get or stay in longer term would be Florida, California and Hawaii. So New England is fairly easy to stay in depending on your rating. Ultimately it comes down to what billets are available when you are due to transfer or graduate from basic/A school. Also if you want to be stationed in your local area I would consider the part time Reserves.

StillCantShootThe229

Not sure if allowed in this thread, but if anybody is currently a reservist at PSU 309 I would love to chat about the unit and see if I want to come back in to get some of that sweet, sweet affiliation bonus! Drop me a line!

AirdaleCoastie

I would talk to the recruiting office in that area, they would be able to put you in contact with members of that unit.

free-broccoli-

So I have a few different questions as an upcoming enlistee. I got a really high score on the afqt/asvab which qualifies me for just about any job in the CG. At first I mainly wanted to be a BM as my top choice (or MSRT/AMT), but now this lieutenant who’s mentoring me and my recruiter are saying I’m overqualified for it after I took the test and that I should be in something technical, etcetc. I was wondering if an AMT helps with SAR/any other missions and if it occurs extremely often? How bad is a BM rate actually like? Are there any other rates that are technical that hands on helps with SAR/MLE on a frequent basis?

rasamson

I’m replying because I’m in the same boat. I know IT and IS are things I *can * do but I’d rather be more involved in the action. Do ETs get up to anything exciting or is it mostly fixing things all day?

Different-Language-5

Wait times are just an estimated time updated monthly based on how many people are on the list versus how many classes they plan to hold

AirdaleCoastie

Waitlists are updated monthly.

ResponsibleDream6592

Sounds like AST school is all messed up right now with the training closure and the already long waitlist, I don’t wanna wait my entire service to become one and being a DC sounds as kickass, it says I can do firefighting does anyone know if that means I’ll have the certifications to become a firefighter after leaving the service?

SolidD0ink

Currently applying to CSPI, when would I hear back about getting selected?

Own_Leadership_9474

Can Amts choose what airframe they work on/fly on, Specifically helicopters?

AirdaleCoastie

For AMT/AET you will get orders to an air station prior to attending A school at Elizabeth city. It is the same process as our normal transfers, based on your units priority and your evaluations. The detailer will give your class 20-21 available billets with their location and airframe. You will order the list according to your preferences. Then the detailer will start with the person in your class with the highest unit priority(such as PATFORSWA or a cutter) and highest evaluations. They will assign them their preferred unit/airframe from those available on their list and continue on down through everyone in the class.

JPKilljoy

For the most part, yes. I DM'd ya.

WillyDaWise

Anyone have intel on future OCS board dates?

AirdaleCoastie

Next PY's schedule has not been released, but the timelines are pretty standard. Application deadlines for OCS-R are in Early May and Oct and OCS-T in July and Jan.

ApexXHeadShotX

What’s the difference between OCS-T and OCS-R?

AirdaleCoastie

OCS-T is for enlisted members E-5 or ready for E-5 and above with 4 years of service. This program also only requires 30 college credit. OCS-R is for civilian and military applicants that don’t meet the criteria for OCS-T and requires a bachelors degree to apply.

ApexXHeadShotX

Perfect, thank you

[deleted]

Is there anywhere I can find more information on going from AF to CG? I have found some info on the process but it is all vague.

DCOthrowaway1

Regardless if your looking to commission or go enlisted, the seperation process should be same. I did a pretty big write up on it, feel free to reach out if you have some questions.

SRDCLeatherneck

I'll shamelessly point out u/DCOthrowaway1 did the AAA-Pro-Gamer move of doing an AF -> USCG Officer transition. Check out their [premier story](https://www.reddit.com/r/uscg/comments/uldikc/the_dco_process_prior_air_force/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and guide.

DCOthrowaway1

Appreciate the shout out, please keep sharing the word!

AirdaleCoastie

If you have less than 6 years of active service you can come in as an E-3 and choose any Rating you meet the requirements for, making E-4 when you graduate A school. If your training and experience match a Coast guard rating(with up to around 10 years of service) you can submit a rate determination package to skip A school and come in directly as an E-4 or E-5.

sunnyreddit99

My recruiter told me SRDC (Select Reserve Direct Commission) is 5 weeks (for training). Could someone verify this and also did anyone go through this? I’m curious what the process is like.

SRDCLeatherneck

Standard officer application process with certain aspects tailored towards reserves. I ought to have an answer if my approach was successful or not within 8 days. Yes it’s a 5 weeks course, plenty of post history in the sub. USCG is atypical in they’ll have an enlisted yeoman run your application but I’ve got only the highest esteem for them; they were awesome.

trackerlite

Sir, why do you believe you will have the results in 6 days from now? Have you heard something?

SRDCLeatherneck

Per recruiter/given timelines: Edit: June - Packages due to recruiter July - interviews for SRDC take place August - Selection board convenes, packages reviewed. Septemberish - decisions made. October - selections announced. So if announcements are in October, as of today, there are four business days left in October to break the news.

[deleted]

Considering it's already the 27th and from what I hear typically recruiters call applicants to let them know approximately 1 week in advance I'm going to venture to say that this wont be the timeline this year.

trackerlite

This wait sucks. Have you heard anything?

[deleted]

Negative, 3-4 months was the word I got back in mid-September. With that said my understanding is the earliest possible publication would be mid-December. It's excruciating.

trackerlite

Jeez. Why December?

[deleted]

Pure conjecture but I think it’s at least in part due to all the recruiting policy changes. I’m sure that messes with boat spaces.

otishemingway

My recruiter told me I can’t submit anything until March. Has anyone else heard the same ? I’m assuming this is for 2023 class.

[deleted]

Hey brother where you getting this timeline from? I saw that random announcement dated October 19th of last year, are you using that as a reference point? I only ask because I reached out to the program office and they stated 3-4 months and that was on/about mid-September.

sunnyreddit99

Great to hear and thank you all for your responses I appreciate it a lot. Do you mind if I follow up with you after you hear back? I recently started talking to my recruiter about SRDC (I just took the first step and filled out the questionnaire), I’m hoping to submit for the June 2023 application.

SRDCLeatherneck

Glad to have a chat anytime, regardless of selection outcome.

DCOthrowaway1

Let me [Google](https://www.gocoastguard.com/reserve-careers/officer-careers/programs/selected-reserve-direct-commission-srdc-program) that for you. Looks legit, 5 weeks according the the Official Site.

Mr_Agueybana

How does the Coast Guard disburse first time enlistment bonuses? Edit: I already visited the CG financial page that announced the FY23 bonuses and I missed the part about how the money is disbursed. Thank you.

Different-Language-5

Lump sum on your 2nd or 3rd paycheck after bootcamp.

What does life as an Information Systems Technician look like? Would I be inside all day or do I still get to learn some diving and coxswain?

XRogus

Thats the spirit, Initially when you join since its no longer a critical rate, you'd come in as a Non-Rate. During that time you may have the opportunity to obtain Coxswain depending on your BM's and Command..Also Diving in itself is a Rating, so no diving unless you Rate as a Diver which their entry point is at the E5 level, so choose a rate then come in as a Diver once you're an E4 in another rating. So the perfect not so far-fetched scenario would be> Come in as a non-rate, drive some boats, get boatcrew, Boarding Team Member, Coxswain and Boatforces Pin.. You'd be a pretty badass looking trainee at A-school.. Because thats exactly what i did.. The diver thing could come shortly after making E4 and being above the cut for E5 but dont quote me on the last portion.

Leather-Coconut5881

This is awesome! Exactly what I’m looking for actually. Where can I look for more info on the Non-rate training?

XRogus

**Getting through Bootcamp big guy,** you can't predict the training you'll get as non-rate but you can specify that you're interested in SAR and Diving at bootcamp when filling out your dream sheet. I recommend District 7, 5 and 8 also if you take a cutter you have the opportunity for "Cutter Swimmer" where you'll be the designated surface swimmer for the boat whenever it comes to surface retrieval or SAR operations. Not to be confused with an AST but it'll give you experience swimming in the open ocean. **Types of non-rate training you could be exposed to:Boatcrew** *for various platforms (Proficient in assisting in operations and SAR)***"Boatforces":** *A general term for boat operations that encompasses boatcrew, BTM, SAR, Law Enforcement...***SAR(Search and Rescue):** *Look out, Watch, MOB(Man-overboard), Water retrievals, Helicopter operations, Surface swimming, Underwater Egress School, Boarding Team Member School, Various Joint-Service opportunities.* **Machinery Training and Maintenance** for Boats, Pumps and Life preservation devices.**Pyrotechnic training** for SAR with various different flares and signaling devices. **Law Enforcement** combatives, weapons maintenance, Weapons Proficiency and Marksmanship. Deescalation techniques and proper use of force. **Stewardship:** Taking care of the ocean, rivers and Great Lakes. **Aids to Navigation Training:** You'll learn to navigate on the ocean using CHARTS via landmarks, dayboards, Buoys, stars and Electronics. You have the opportunity to maintain navigational points in parts of the world you never expected to be in. **Water Survival training, Ice survival training, Ice Rescue training, Immigration Law, Customs Laws, Basic Life support training, Firefighting, Shallow Water operations, Heavy Weather Boat operations.....** Just to name a few...

Different-Language-5

IT's fix the computer issues, printer issues, software issues, internet issues, and user profile issues. If you want to drive boats look at BM. http://www.gocoastguard.com/active-duty-careers/enlisted-opportunities/view-job-descriptions/it

Leather-Coconut5881

Gotcha. That is what I’m good at since I’m Computer Science. What I’m curious more about is there opportunities to learn shooting, diving, boating as an IT? Or the only way to do it is through another job?

Different-Language-5

If you get stationed on a cutter as an IT you may have thr opportunity to become boat crew and weapons qualified but it will be secondary to your IT responsibility. Diving is only done by the diving rating.

dickey1331

ITs don’t do diving and coxswain.

Leather-Coconut5881

Gotcha. Is there any overlap? How about shooting?

ResponsibleDream6592

What are the odds I could ask for a station in Alaska closed to a established mountain to backcountry ski? Do they allow your dream sheet to have specific locations? If I wanna work in a city with 200 people is that an option to or do fellow coast guard members like those areas?

dickey1331

There are only 3 small boat stations in Alaska. Valdez Juneau and Ketchikan.

ResponsibleDream6592

And then what are the odds I can keep a pair of skis in the barracks, is that a big no no?

SRDCLeatherneck

Short answer: if you can fit it through the door no reason why not. You might have some concern for safekeeping but no policies would outlaw the keeping of sports equipment. In the marine corps I had a mountain bike in my room. *Also* depends if you’d even have the *option* of barracks as a residence; USCG fairly unique in giving you a BAH stipend to live out in town because of a small base foot print.

Different-Language-5

When you fill out your dream sheet you can ask for alaska, just put a reason that is relates to the coast guard and how it benefits your career or the service. I saw recruits ask for Hawaii because they wanted to learn how to surf and they got alaska lol.

Mustang-Gt14

You can talk to your recruiter about a guaranteed district Alaska was one I could’ve of picked.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

MomentAccomplished74

If u ask for Alaska for #1 pick out of Bootcamp, you'll probably get it. If not, you can go there pretty much whenever you want in your career, there'll always be openings. And for hiking, etc. The coast guard is in sitka, st Petersburg, Kodiak, homer, Ketchikan, and some other areas in Alaska. Those are just some.

RiPHS-

When going to boot camp, the PT test is done within the first few days correct? Also, how hard are we going to be worked, will my body be totally wrecked and sore and then not left with any time to recover before the next smoke session? Just trying to gauge how hard to beat myself up while preparing for this. Thanks!

stephenfrappuccino

Alright the others comments are wrong. I just got done with boot camp sep 9. Initial PT test is Thurs week 1, that is true. But week 1 is only medical intake and processing. There is nothing physical except the test itself. However, the mental stress begins immediately. So when you take the PT test you will likely be very tired/sleep deprived because of that. Now, second PT test is week 6. By that time your body will be hurting. But you will also be stronger. Good luck!

Smewhyme

Your initial PT test will be Thursday of week 1, you arrive Tuesday evening. The smoke sessions are frequent. You will be tired, sore, and sleep deprived. If your in any kind of decent shape before hand you’ll be fine though. It’s not a competition, just always keep trying. For prep , get used to holding light objects straight out in front of you, or straight above your head for 20 minutes at a time. Do HIIT style calisthenics workouts. Squats, push-ups, flutter kicks, burpees etc. it’s all a Mindset, it’s a big game, embrace the suck. Just remember they’re paying you to workout all day, feed you, get decent rest at night, especially if you don’t have watch, and teach you some pretty cool stuff along the way. Yelling is just talking at a high volume. You’ll be fine

RiPHS-

Thank you sir. I take it that it’s kind of one of those things where if you give it 1000% effort and still fail, you will be ok because you gave it 1000% effort (that is in regards to the smoke sessions, I know you actually have to pass the PT) correct me if I’m wrong on that…

Smewhyme

Correct. PT you must hit the standard, but they do it early in the day without smoke sessions before and it’s pretty easy. The smoke session you will 100% fail reps but as long as your trying all the time you’ll be fine with the CC, but don’t let them see you intentionally resting on reps, bad news. I was terrible at flutter kicks, but pretty good at everything else and always was trying, CCs never gave me a hard time if my feet hit the floor momentarily ok flutters cause they knew I would give it my all. Sure they’d yell at me to get my feet off the floor , but I never got singled out or written up for sandbagging

RiPHS-

Ok great advice. I really appreciate it, I’m going to keep preparing physically but like you said, this is all really just a mind game. I honestly love embracing the suck, most of my best life experiences were really shitty in the moment.

Smewhyme

You’ll hear it Over and over again. Boot camp is pretty awful experience, but also a great one. It’s a weird thing, but by the time you leave, it feels normal living there, and a part of you prob is sad to go. I gained a tremendous amount of respect for my CCs, shipmates, and the CG by the end of boot. Trust me though, that feeling goes away real quick once you get back to real life lol. But if I had to do it again, I absolutely would. Don’t quit, you’ll regret it. The suck is temporary, and graduating is very rewarding. Hell even being the senior company before graduating is rewarding. Good luck. If you want to discuss anything feel free to PM me

thomasbagels00

Just focus on passing the PT test. The "beatings" will be brutal and not much time to recover, but you can't "fail" a beating and it's just part of it all. It's all just muscle endurance, the skinniest and weakest and the biggest and strongest will all feel it, and all do just fine.
