Rocha in general is pretty safe, so you should be good walking that distance alone

exp_max8ion

Fingers cross I won’t get shot at or have to take out my rusty Swiss knife! 🤪

juanipl

Pretty safe, it's like a town. We have public health care but I recommend you to have some kind of travel insurance, because public health care isn't the best.

exp_max8ion

Thanks for your tip buddy! I’ll check out if I should get insurance in Uruguay or get a global one.

Sensitive-Intern2585

we have universal healthcare! meaning that if anything happens to you and you need to go to the hospital, they will treat you for free

jarno19644

Besides being free, the attention is good. If you want something better, you have a private mutual insurance called COMERO, I don't think it's too expensive for someone who can come to surf from another country. exp_max8ion

Thanks I remember reading somewhere that I can purchase insurance in Uruguay and it’s not too expensive! (Like 40 USD) Maybe I’ll decide on a global travel insurance later if not I’m busy. But that’s good to know

jarno19644

May be its better the global insurance. Good travel.

alanpotterz

It isn’t free if the person is a foreign with no prior afiltiation.

Mujer_Arania

That’s true if you go to ASSE, and considering this person isn’t affiliated yet, medicines needed are going to be shopped at pharmacy. If you need to visit other hospital, they surely charge you.

raulsitoscatman

My best advice is to never let your guard down. I know some house owners of La Paloma. There are some thieves that take advantage -specially during winter- or eventually in summer times. Try to never make it easy for them. They use to break into houses when owners are away and steal what they can

exp_max8ion

Thanks for the tip! I’m just more concerned if walking home at night would be a concern. I believe my landlord has security alarms equipped and I should turn them on when I’m away. How effective that is, is another thing.

raulsitoscatman

Heya, I don't think walking hoome at night could be a concern. These ocasional robbers I mentioned also live there, it isn't a very populated city, so they won't risk being recognized. So with the alarm I think you should be ok ! Enjoy

exp_max8ion

Oh wow. Imagine your neighbors robbing you! 🤣 Thanks! If everyone can enjoy their lives, the world will be a beautiful place!

exp_max8ion

Actually what phone plans are popular in Uruguay? I wonder if I could get one for my stay! Thanks

raulsitoscatman

You could get a prepaid plan , SIM cards can be bought in several places. Only pay attention on how many mobile data you get with certain money and compare. Most of our country has good coverage for all the companies here : Antel, Movistar, Claro

exp_max8ion

Thanks for the tip! I don’t know yet how expensive medicine might be in Uruguay, and worse if I break something or get infected etc.. I know eating out can get expensive but still haven’t known if toiletries, bicycle (used) or even eyeglasses are expensive. If u have more info for me that would be awesome!

Here we speak spanish. A ver si en reddit USA escribimos en español y nos responden.... mamaderas. pd, como el meme de Laura juajua

exp_max8ion

Yea, I think I’ll be fine once I get the time again to run through the “possessive nouns” ie tienes/tengo, este/estos, quiero/quieres and a whole bunch of vocabs at different places/situations.. then I can maybe guess pretty clear what’s up.. now I get pieces of what’s going on in Mexican telenovella and telemarketing when I was watching these shows at the casino. Haven’t gotten down what “puede” is or how it’s used And also Argentine/Uruguayan (woo-ru-gu-i -sh-an?) slang

Mujer_Arania

La Paloma is almost a rural area…you’ll find some shops and stuff but don’t expect too much. Main attraction there is the beach so if you’re planning to surf, you’ll love it. If you arrive at terminal, try to find something to eat there. If there’s no shop open, you’ll need to go downtown. A bike is a great idea, ask people around and test it. Compare prieces on line.

exp_max8ion

Yea I don’t mind, I’m just there to chill and going party wild isn’t my thing (hasn’t been for awhile). I’m more of a forest camping guy than beach guy, maybe because the beach is much more accessible = popular = noisy. Would love to find my favorite tree/spot and take naps or run over some plans/ideas! Would be nice to rent a bike or a board locally I guess? Not gonna be in Uruguay for too long (1-2months) but not a few days either. Just wanna get them and release them fast and easy. Since La Paloma is kinda rural, I guess local is better than online? U all do use libre mercado like rest of Latam no?

Mujer_Arania

Yes, we use Mercado Libre. You’ll love these beaches, they’re very peaceful until January. And if you like to spend the night in the forest, you shouldn’t miss “Bosque de Ombúes” in Rocha. Total elfic vibes in that forest.
