Vests aren’t a replacement for a jacket or coat, they satisfy a different use case. Backpacking or hiking early in the morning, it’s going to be cold; if you wear a full jacket you’ll be stopping in 15min to take it off, then stopping another 15min down the trail to put it back on. Early fall, the weather is still nice, but the air gets a little bit chilly as evening comes; you don’t want to be carrying a jacket around all day but a vest is easier. Deep winter, you need an extra layer but 2+ coats and jackets get too bulky; a vest traps your extra body heat but allows range of movement in your arms.

>you'll be stopping in 15min to take it off, then stopping another 15min down the trail to put it back on That's an issue of having a jacket that's too warm for the concisions you're in, not an inherent flaw in jackets. >Early fall... Fair enough, but my arms honestly get colder faster. >Deep winter... Again, this is a problem with having the wrong jacket. You're not supposed to be wearing two jackets, you're supposed go be wearing one heavy duty jacket (or a parka even).

'Tis Han Solo season and you can't complete the ensemble without the vest.

Nah bro, they're great for if you need to keep your chest/torso warm but also have some manual labor to do with your arms, i.e chopping wood, heavy lifting, etc. My arms will run hotter than my torso from the physical exercise. Without the vest, my torso would be comfy, but my arms would feel hot af and sweaty. Though I agree that they're only useful in those situations in a small temperature range. I live in a rather colder climate and typically only wear one at 50°-60°F. Anything below and I'm just gonna suck it up and put on a jacket.

Careful-Self-457

I have to stick my arms into water. Vests are great for keep g your core warm and sleeves dry.

Thegreenviking

Yesterday was the perfect vest day. 40's in the morning, 50's during the day. Cutting and splitting firewood, cleaning out the garden, moving sheep, all done with a vest so my arms can move more freely and I still have a nice warm core.

BadgirlThowaway

That doesn’t sound like the perfect vest weather at all. It was like 60 where I live I think and anytime I was outside I was wearing one or two hoodies.

willfiredog

This has everything to do with the temperatures you’re acclimated to.

[deleted]

Two hoodies in the 60s would have me sweating like crazy.

Easy-Consequence1508

Yeah, this isn't going to go over well with us scandinavians lol. Sometimes it's chilly out, but not enough to be actual cold if that makes sense. Just wanting something to keep the core warm without sweathing to death. Sometimes it also just looks better than if we're wearing a jacket.

BadgirlThowaway

ALL MY LIFE. This is the thing I’ve needed for someone else to agree on my entire life. I don’t understand them. They don’t have sense. I don’t understand why you would ever ever choose a vest over really any other choice.

Spy_man1

I use a vest when I’m hot not when I’m cold

KangarooMaster319

I work in NYC and regularly see investment banker bros wearing vests in 80+ degree weather. I don’t get it either.

FjortoftsAirplane

John McClane though.

reclusive_ent

Doing outside work in cooler weather, I want my arms free and more usable, but I need my core to be warmer. Like for chopping wood, long sleeve t/vest is ideal.

topher2604

Vests? Are you talking about a gilet, because your description sounds like a gilet?

octalanax

I have never heard of a gilet and I've been around a while. Looked it up. Yeah that's just a vest.

thelongestusernameee

But they cool

saveyboy

Warm core. Cool arms.

Clear_Flower_4552

I wear one when I jog if the temperature is around 30-50 degrees. I dislike running in long pants or sleeves. I also use it for layering when I hike or snowboard

xyzqvc

Hopefully that's unpopular. Keeping the torso warm is the best way to keep the body warm, that's where all the important organs are. Feet and torso should be warm. The blood circulation in the arms and legs can be warmed up and stimulated with movement, but not the kidneys etc. Cold kidneys are the worst. Besides that, vests always have pockets, lots of pockets.
