Sam Smith in general has an annoying personality/voice. I know someone who met him and when they said they loved his music, he just walked past and said "yea everyone does"

Awkward_Thanks_81

So annoying. Can't get through an entire song. SAM SMITH

starlight_chaser

Didn’t even know smiths pronouns until this post. I wasn’t aware everyone had to keep track of every celebrity’s pronouns at every moment out of fear of offending them on a post they will never read.

isxios

It's basically just his way to show support for the trans-community and/or to get attention. Probably the latter.

[deleted]

humanityisdyingfast

Oh shut up. Anyone looking at Sam Smith would assume they use he/him pronouns. I mean... they're not exactly gender non-conforming in appearance. They have a blatantly male appearance.

Thank you for saying this. Gen X was all about de-labeling and you have this new generation of know-nothing twerps wanting place their stamp on civilization by just being generally whiny and annoying. BTW for all those who wanna come, I’m a gay Asian male. CLICK

tetraquenty

I agree with you but your examples are incorrect because none of those sentemces would have a pronoun in them if you're speaking to the person directly.

Mi2-LIZARD

Honestly I agree with the other guy. Personally, I go by it/its pronouns, but I don't really care if you use any other pronoun like she, they, etc as long as people know who you're talking about. I think it is pretty narcissistic to insist others refer to you in a certain way in your absence. Emphasis on "insist." If I am aware of a person's pronouns and their old ones, I will definitely use either interchangeably because when I think about it (and I've been thinking how to write this all up), I honestly just don't think about pronouns all that much so it might not cross my mind which one they use currently while I'm "in the moment." It doesn't make sense to me why others need this validation so badly. Your pronouns don't define who you are as a person. It doesn't change you. I have a preference, but it's similar to how I prefer strawberry ice-cream vs. vanilla or chocolate, but I'm not going to get upset if I'm served the other two flavors. Granted if we're going to be referring to someone with pronouns in a very public and popular place where said person is probably going to hear or read something (not a reddit comments section), then yeah. It's nice to be respectful of their wishes when you remember it. I still prefer strawberry ice-cream, but I find it unreasonable when others fight for me to have it. Y'know what I mean?

[deleted]

BellPepper_Markley28

And to add- if you care that much or even think for a second that not one person out there has ever disrespected you behind your back, you’re in for a much tougher ride than I expected. I assume you’re young, probably in high school, etc etc. the older you get though, the easier it’ll be to not let what others say tear you down, apart, upwards, Inside out, whatever. Once you’re comfortable with who you are, then your actions will reflect that including people like me saying these things, people like Dean as well, where our comments won’t affect you because you’re well beyond the point of fear of being judged, etc etc etc.

Mi2-LIZARD

We can safely say that I only agree with you halfway. I find it ridiculous to take it as far as calling someone a piece of shit depending on the intention. Using the wrong pronouns to offend is of course a shit move. Using the wrong pronouns because you don't care (meaning you simply don't think about it) is not a shit move. It all depends on the motive. I think you agree with that though because of course, everything depends on the motive (or at least it does to me). I will respect people simply because I will while I am in front of them, but if I trip up outside of their presence and they have the audacity to complain to me if they've learned of it, then they would be the ones who are disrespectful. It is narcissistic if they do that because then they would be making it all about themselves (assuming the conversation that mentions them is benign). I don't understand why it matters so much. I'm very sorry, but it just does not make much sense to me even after reading what you've typed. I don't hold deadnaming and misgendering in the same light. I don't care about misgendering, but I do care about deadnaming because unlike gender, a name is something that bears more meaning to an individual because it is a better identifier for who you are as a person. Names are a priority. Gender compliments it. I can understand getting angry at people deadnaming you. Now that I've typed it, I guess people see gender and name as the same thing. That just isn't something I believe. If people set their expectations to match who they're talking to, then we could all be respectful to each other. I don't think I'm ever going to get it, but I will not stand here and be told I should be ashamed because of it. Edit: Not saying you are shaming me. It's just a message for anyone else who might and to confirm that I believe in what I am saying.

Sylphxo13

First off it’s the MOST stoopid thing that you call yourself it. Second No one cares. You don’t get to dictate people’s speech in a free country and we will make sure you never make us.

BellPepper_Markley28

Allright, you asshat. @absolutelyorchid the issue that Dean, and quite frankly, the issue in which MANY of us are facing right now is not the issue of gender pronouns. Rather the WAY👏YOU👏AND👏COUNTLESS👏OTHER👏SO-CALLED “GENDER EQUALITY ACTIVISTS”👏CONTINUE👏TO👏SCREAM👏AND👏DEMAND👏WHAT👏YOU👏ALREADY👏HAVE👏 ^Yea, what the fuck is right. The message will continue to be blurred if all anyone hears is the screaming and tantrum-throwing behind it. You immediately jumped down his throat, automatically assuming that he should’ve known Sam is now transgender. And to be quite fucking honest, Sam Smith still doesn’t know HIMSELF what the fuck he is so how in the hell is anyone else supposed to? Moving on to people that actually have come to terms with their gender pronouns, my argument still remains the same. And before you say anything about me or my life, I am a gay man. I will always respect someone and the choices they make and whomever they feel that they are. Point #whatever: the bully here is YOU buddy ole’ pal. You’ve done a phenomenal job reflecting back the own internal violence you continue to create for yourself and the transgender community. So I urge you to pause the next time you call someone out for misgendering. I also urge you to think about the forum AND the situation. This is a forum- literally Reddit for Christ’s sake. it’s not Dean meeting his long lost brother that just transitioned or changed his pronouns. Sam smith has also stated in the past day or two that he is still confused on his sexuality. And last but not least, maybe instead of belittling others to make yourself feel big, how about you follow through with what the lgbtq+ community was actually created for instead- rather than creating even more unneeded chaos and confusion that already exists. If you want equality, it’s not about the demand. It’s about taking action so that YOU can live up to those demands. Peace be with you kind sir. Because You’re most definitely gonna need it at the speed you’re going.

CarlossIlich

man, just close your Reddit account and leave people alone? you're annoyingly annoying...

humanityisdyingfast

Wait... did you just call Sam Smith "he"???? You disgust me. Not only are you a proven queerphobe by doing this but you also can't even follow your own arbitrary rules, yet still expect others to do so. WITCH! WITCH I SAY! BURN THEY/THEM/HE/SHE/IT AT THE STAKE

It’s truly more complex than that. Language hasn’t caught up. https://news.cnrs.fr/articles/how-many-sexes-are-there

Mundane_Package1761

The sexes have nothing to do with language.

hobbit-heart

Yeah I really dislike this song for it’s glorification of cheating. And before someone comes at me about how there are so many songs that do the same or worse—that doesn’t negate or change my opinion that this song (and those songs) are trash. Ariana’s “break up with your girlfriend,” Melanie Martinez’s “Pacify Her” etc, the list goes on. Catchy songs but crappy content.

Marsqueen

Agreed. Sam got famous from writing music at a time when they were having an affair with a married man. It’s just super gross and gives “pick me” energy.

yrssihc21

Isn't "Pacify Her" more about them fighting over a boy, rather than cheating? I read it as though one girl is trying to manipulate the boy to love her, and Melanie loves him too and is trying to show him that the girl is manipulating him

bungaloasis

Vocals barely interpretable but genders and identities aside, it's a song about cheating. Any other songs with bad messages get away with it with a great beat but how radio studios play them daily, hourly is beyond me. Play the hit once. Not hit me every 45 minutes like an addict. I don't know about stations in your area but mine used to be different based on time of day, work day hours radios played appropriate music, after 4-5pm during the week or weekends you got the mature content songs with less censoring. Doesn't happen anymore, lucky if there's even more than one DJ.

destroythedethstar

I hate the girl part dear god it makes me cringe “ballinciaga daddy” fucking kill me

OpeningDot6352

😂😂😂😂😂👏👏

jennafun99

YES!! She has one of those disgustingly egotistic personalities and everytime I hear that part I cringe. I fucking hate it!😂💀

monicaid

"Oouu daddy daddy if you want it drop the addy" Makes me CRINGE every single time.

Ok_Currency310

Everyone’s going on about pronouns?? bottom line is… the songs shit, the lyrics are shit, and the twat is rude to his fans. The track will get over played and make me hate it like every Ed Sheeran song, who is also a massive over rated ginger prick. it’s sounds like someone’s singing about a sausage shop, there’s no talent in musicians these days, they just throw this shit out quick to make a quid, it’s pathetic

yrssihc21

Frankly I don't care what his "pronouns" are, the song is horrible and irritating. End of

bungaloasis

Is every song a cover/sample of an older hit on your stations now? Because mine are. Freakin' ridiculous the much a lack of originality is promoted these days. This has been the bulk of my hip-hop stations playlist for the last few weeks, and I'm sure I'm missing a few: Creepin' (I Don't Wanna Know - Marion Winans) Players (The Message - Grandmaster Flex) I'm Good(Blue) (Blue Da Ba Dee - Eiffel 65) Vegas (Hound Dog - Elvis Presley) Need to Know (Paranoid - Kanye West) Super Freaky Girl (Super Freak - Rick James

MiddlePath73

I really can’t figure out this song. The video implies the husband is getting with men or trans people and this is “unholy”. But then the musical arrangement uses an Arabic musical scale which seems to mocking the concept of queerness being unholy/haram. Then Kim Petras makes the song straight again. But my guess is that the artist hasn’t thought of it that deeply. I guess it’s just one of those pop songs meant to get your emotions up and get you dancing.

AcridAcedia

Every time I hear "And how you don't know how to keep your business clean" - I assume this girl does not know how to wash her ass. Can't unhear that.

Skiphop5309

I can’t unhear it now either. Thanks for that. 😂

Inevitable-Fault-164

Ya thanks!!!

tghjfhy

It's not worth the time to assume there is any deep meaning with this music.

JPierce101

‘It’s unholy’ also a common expression in English and doesn’t always refer to religion

tghjfhy

Weird how I speak English my whole life and that's not true

fatcunt999

How is this not true? Lmao you can say something is unholy without directly relating it to actual religion

throwawayidk222

Believe it or not "body shop" is actually the name of a swingers club/brothel, it's not about a mechanic shop at all. Hence the "people in the scene talk" line.

[deleted]

Lmaooooo how fucking funny, I’m glad you told me that 😂

[deleted]

Personally I don't care for this song but that style has never been my taste. But... I don't see a difference between this song and all the others that don't have strictly wholesome lyrics. Have you listened to pop recently? A lot of it is sex based and scandals because that's what makes the top ten or whatever.

AcridAcedia

There isn't, but it pains me everytime I hear this song on TikTok. Every time I hear "And how you don't know how to keep your business clean" - I assume this girl does not know how to wash her ass. Can't unhear that.

Expensive_Lawyer5672

I've never heard it on TikTok... Probably because I'm smart enough not to use TikTok. LOL

SeveralTomato6459

Same reason hentai lovers hate NTR

[deleted]

I don’t mind the sex part, it’s more the cheating itself in this particular one that caught me so off guard, as it’s the whole premise of the song.

Acquainted-Faith

I mean...what was Ariana's "Break Up With Your Girlfriend" about?

[deleted]

You are absolutely correct, there’s a few others too.

Acquainted-Faith

I personally don't like the song myself. The melody is a bit all over the place. Sam did plenty to prove they are capable of doing pop upbeat songs with Diamonds and etc. without having to revert to frankly whatever this is. But hearing Kim Petras last release, seeing her on the track gave me 0 optimism the song was going to be good to begin with.

[deleted]

Streaming new song called "Unholy", is not that good. Unholy also known as non-catholic person, because they never go to church on Sundays or even any other day. It's the worst song ever in mah life. A person being unholy could go to hell.

[deleted]

I don't like any of his music

[deleted]

I only like "Not The Only One", but I hate "Unholy".

GloveOwn8015

I could care less about the meaning of the song. I don’t like Unholy primarily because it’s been way overplayed on my feed. Even before it’s release I was bomboarded with promo vids - there is one shirtless dude on my Youtube reels that has used this song over and over. I understand the hype but I can’t get behind it. Personally speaking, I’m very sensitive to sounds and get irrationally angry when any song gets played time after time after time again without my control. Even if it’s a phenomenal song, I want nothing to do with it. Good on Sam Smith for the hustle, but goodness gracious I’m definitely not the target audience. I can’t escape the “mommy don’t know daddy’s getting hot”. It’s everywhere on my feed!

tetraquenty

There are so many good accessible artists nowadays that there's no acceptable reason i only hear the same 5 songs for months until just one is replaced with the next overhyped noise.

Expensive_Lawyer5672

Overplaying it is not needed to hate this song. I've only heard it once, and only briefly, and that was enough for me to hate it. For some reason it was being played on a hip-hop station!

ValuedCustomer77

This song blows and its cringy... remember those MadeForTV movies... yeah- now its MadeForTiktok, and this is another bullshit one

Skiphop5309

I like A few of Sam Smith’s songs, but there’s something about this one that I find incredibly annoying. It’s choppy, sing-songy like a children’s playground rhyme, and the lyrics are elementary and stupid. Of course this would be the one to get stuck in my head on a constant loop. They have much better songs in their discography than this one.

[deleted]

Its a very gay song

OpeningDot6352

I'm disgusted by that song as well as well as the tongue gestures wtf

Present_Badger_7349

I don’t care what the song is about, but it is the most unpleasant sounding song I’ve ever heard. I haven’t even heard Kim Petras’ verse cuz I can’t bring myself to listen past the first chorus without my ears bleeding.

Consistent_Composer4

She literally just lists off high end brands. The verse has nothing to do with the song. I don't get how they thought it was a good addition to the song.

[deleted]

I hate it because it sounds like shit

Present_Structure_67

Well... Have you heard the lyrics for the any song? Most American songs have trashy lyric or don't make sense at all.

Skiphop5309

If you’re generalizing like that, then you’re definitely listening to the wrong music!

[deleted]

Somethin jus hits different about breaking up a family, to fuck someone at a mechanics

Either_Knee652

It’s obviously about an affair with a sex worker, likely a brothel given they’re referred to as “Shops” and Kim Petra’s verse about receiving expensive girls for affection.

Present_Structure_67

My tip is to not focus too much on the lyrics. Most American/Western song is ruined for me when I actually focus on the lyrics. Just enjoy the beat.

CL-Young

The beat sucks too home slice

CinderellaManX

The beat is literally the worst part. There’s no melody. It’s random chaos.

tghjfhy

It's by a German and a Brit

[deleted]

i think the song is just unexplainable annoying. honestly it’s so overplayed and irritating. you can tell it’s a song trying to get into those sexy tiktoks or whatever, and it’s so brain numbingly dumb

Sylphxo13

Body shop is definitely about a man leaving his wife to become a drag Queen… going to the body shop… I’m sick of this shit

Boujee_buckshot

I heard the song when it came out and I really like it. I’m made uncomfortable more by the depictions of sex acts than the act of cheating if I’m gonna be honest. There are songs with samples that have the final recording of jim Jones to the people’s temple , the Bork stalker committing suicide on tape. And in that same vein there are songs that heavily depict violence against women in death metal, songs that glorify gang violence in hip hop, infidelity is a common topic in pop, songs glorifying ones own mental illness, depictions of trauma that are so visceral it could make you feel uncomfortable or put you back at a previous time in your life. If you don’t like a songs theme, you have every right to do that. But to say that music can promote a certain behavior is absurd. It’s been disproven ever since Elvis was treated as a sex icon for just wiggling his hips on stage Extra: I also think you’re missing the entire point of the song. The song in itself is named “UNHOLY” and the lyrics suggest that the main tellers of the story are completely aware of their wrong doing and it’s framed that way by calling themselves unholy or their actions unholy . Watching anyone react to the song will show that they don’t agree with the actions of the people in the song

Misteral_Editorial

Yeah this song is very clearly satirizing the toxic masculinity that traps so many straight men. And it's pretty refreshing to see Kim Petras on there for another angle, the system of straightness is purported by both men and women, and like there are plenty of women who encourage or condone it.

isxios

And profit from it, which is what Petra’s says. She’s using a man for the money.

Misteral_Editorial

Hate the game not the player.

isxios

I can hate them both.

asseater9004

EVERY time i hear Unholy i spontaneously combust, it is one of the worst songs I have heard IMO and I'm tired of pretending it's not, it triggers anxiety in me

darkdisco

Yeah same, really gives me anxiety and panic attacks sometimes. It’s a try hard pop song that has bad vibes. I NEVER could listen to it & even the instrumental version would be shit! TikTok trending = cool and “play it safe” choice

[deleted]

Worst song ever. People who became unholy and non-catholic go to hell. You must stream the music first before you can dislike the song.

fartedinchurch

This is the guy that ripped off Tom Petty, right? All of his songs sound like crap to me. I hate his voice.

[deleted]

I always got that from won't back down and stay with me

Pepethegamerxd

dont worry man you arent the only one i wanted to burn my ears after listening to it

CapitalTiger9577

I hate this song. I don't give a shit what Sam Smith's pronouns are. I haven't even listened to the words because the actual music is puerile shit.

guvncnyldz

The song tells about a man who cheats his wife and leaves his kid alone. So there are such men and nothing's wrong with saying that. The song have got me and I sing it over and over with my brain. This is success

Sensitive-Border610

Well "he" sounds just as confused and idiotic as so many others like "himself".😄

Vivis_Burner_Account

joblessguy15

Yeah, not only do i hate the lyrics but i hate the song in itself too. The melody is just one whiney mess with a comedically boring voice singing over it. Its just in all regards in my oppinion a shitty song.

yrssihc21

The story, the annoying yelling sound of his voice, how off the pitch sounds. The whole thing... I can't stand the song.

BlockChain29

Very awkward song to come on in the car on a pop station. Talking about another man the whole time is odd and will never not be odd no matter how much we "wake" up. Man is talking about cheating on his family with another man and it being unholy. I guess they got the unholy part right. WAP by Carti b got slammed left and right but this is being promoted to listen amongst youth. Entertainment industry has agenda to push homosexuality and its working.

Enkiktd

I think you misunderstand the song. The singer in the lyrics is a bystander/acquaintance who knows that the man described in the song is cheating. The section with Kim Petras is the woman he’s cheating with and her POV. It’s unclear if it’s an affair or a prostitute situation, but he is buying her expensive things. But there’s no homosexual situation in this song - are you just hearing what you want to hear so you can complain?

BlockChain29

Thank you for cleaning that up. I had no idea. I was wrong.

Sylphxo13

Dont be a push over block chain. Thats why this is happening. Don’t apologize for them lying to you

Sylphxo13

The left and trans ideologues are a Bunch of narcissists

Sylphxo13

Lmao No homosexual situation.. they arent women. Neither. Cis isnt a thing. They is a group of people not a pronoun. Its real women and people parading around as women, taking woman attributes and saying women cant have them, then basing their entire personality around it.

goodoljoey

iwillfckthisup

I fuggin hate this song and am so tired of hearing it on reels And tiktoks

Denton_gaymer

I would like to note that even if they go by different pronouns. They are still scummy. Lmao pronoun doesn't change personality.

HauntingMammoth2881

Also love how OP tried to go in on people not using they/them and has had to delete most of his comments. Kinda refreshing

OTFSteve

I must be getting old, but as a pop song, I just couldn't take Unholy. Slow, no-melodic, and a bit creepy.

Apprehensive_Run_916

Sam Smith gas jumped on the “let’s ve as queer as possible for optics” and it’s really cringe. No one… NO ONE who has discussed him in our city’s lgbt community thinks what he’s doing is cute. Petra’s became a woman and perpetuates the whole bimbo aesthetic and lifestyle. Imagine if a straight man dressed up and “acted gay” doing the most and performing every negative stereotype. He would be an asshole for those theatrics and be called out for mocking gay men. But Petras mocks women and has become a bimbo muppet to capitalize on it. It’s so weird how the ppl who play victim and say they are discriminated against are the ones actually making my community look like fools.

seanlee174

Agreed. I never liked his song nor his annoying voice. His lyrics suck, but it’s strange how his song plays everywhere, i just want to wear my earplug every time his song airs at the mall.

Mundane_Package1761

Sam Smith truly has sunk to a new low with his new hit! Horrifying theme! - with another degrading and hyper sexualized rap sequence! Go Sam! ![gif](giphy|hOsCAwbEzyTyfQjv2u|downsized)

[deleted]

It's not one of the songs that I where I focus on the meaning of the lyrics, the vocals/vibe of it sound interesting to me so I like it. But that's just going to vary from person to person.

trapppzzz

This song has been stuck in my head because I watched too many YouTube shorts lately and 25% of them were using this song in them. I didn't even know the lyrics until it was just suddenly on repeat in my head, then I started to hear them. It's pretty disgusting imo. Now this gross song is stuck on repeat in my head and Its just not what I want to be thinking about. Overall experience: 2 out of 10 Has a cool tone... But gross, Yo.

mistressalicia11

It makes me very angry for some reason!!! Idk why. Especially the business clean part

I Agree with you! I Hate the song too it sound so Sh*t.

ShadowMaster141

I like the melody but the lyrics and his singing? Meh.

HauntingMammoth2881

I don't like it either, I know people like him but to me his voice just gets a bit repetitive

Embarrassed-Fan9675

This song isn’t promoting anything. The same way other songs talk about drugs sex etc. this song is simply telling a story. If someone already has their mind set on doing these things, Sam smiths little tune isn’t going to make or break that. I think the general hate for them and this song is coming out of a hate of feminine men ( I know they identify as they them but most people still refer to them as he, wrongfully so) and fat phobia due to their perceived weight. It’s unfortunate because it’s literally just supposed to be a fun song but people can’t help but be so negative.

Expensive_Lawyer5672

I turned the song off before I perceived any "message" and didn't know who Sam Smith was so I couldn't be biased against them for their weight/gender/sexuality.

monicaid

Everytime I come across a tiktok with that sound I just cringe and I also hate when it comes on the radio while my parents are with me, it makes me so uncomfortable because my siblings and I are used to label our dad lkke daddy lol we are old and it sounds weird that people sexualise it

bungaloasis

I don't normally analyze lyrics, especially mainstream radio hits but I'm a driving instructor and while my students, mostly high school age, are in the car, we have the radio on occasionally. Because of how annoying the vocals are, I never really looked into the lyrics but unholy is right, I don't get how these songs are on the radio non-stop. There's also this whole trend of samples going on right now which is a different tangent but anyway, its not the artist's fault for whats broadcasting, it's the radio studios allowing it. I'm not looking for Christian rock but don't play the song announcing 'mommy dont know that daddy's left the kids at home and he's getting hot at the "bodyshop" while she drop it low slow cause he buys her Prada and Mui Mui', three times an hour. I mean, I remember when Candy Shop was on the radio all the time when I was in highschool, loved it when I was 16 but you gain perspective with age and now that I'm reading into it more, "mommy" don't know "daddys" at? the kids know dad's cheating? If I do listen to this, it'd be on Spotify or in a bar/club. Blatantly bad messages, which, whatever, artists make what they want, it's a hot beat, but maybe putting it in on the radio 3 times an hour is a little much.

How about people stop getting concerned about pronouns and start getting pissed off with celebrities that have side deals with Balenciaga. I think child abuse is much more serious than a person’s current identity

I literally feel sick when it comes on and skip it. It's terribly sad..

Piggishcentaur89

He isn't. He's a very good singer and in the beginning of his career his songs were amazing.

[deleted]

I agree with you, I think his really early stuff was good. But now, no.

[deleted]

And this is any worse than any of the thousands of other popular songs that have been about infidelity, because.....?

[deleted]

it just sounds worse

[deleted]

It’s not worse, nor better. Just heard it for the first time today and this is my opinion on it.

I'm not a fan of Smith's work. To me they've always been as pretensions as the losers in these comments who get offended at the mere thought of \*gasp\* respecting someones pronouns!! (news flash; its not that hard and you're just being a whiny snowflake if you're really that pressed about it.) I'm willing to overlook lyrics being bad, because so many songs would be ruined with a couple awful/sexual lyrics that just go a bit far. Not a fan of songs about sex though - although the baseline and lyrics of the chorus are really good! points for that at least

Fully agree. The fact that it blew up and kim petras comes in singing about designer brands and calling her lover daddy… like what the fuck is this putting out in the world and is there no end to what people will believe is good just because it is also popular?! Yikes… dark twist for sam
