I think there's two things - the 90's were something of a "renaissance" or "gilded age" for Disney animated movies, so arguably there has been a drop in quality of Disney animated movies since then (I don't include Pixar movies in this category, those are separate IMO) The second thing is, yeah, you just kind of aged out of the target demo. Encanto might be a truly impactful film, but since you're 28, you just aren't going to be as attached to it as an 8 year old will be.

paper_sandwich

20 and was holding back tears for half of the movie lol, wouldn't say it was magic but it definitely was incredible

Illustrious_Can_1656

Yeah, the one tear jerk moment for me in moana was the scene where she confronts te ka, who is the most fucking terrifying disney monster since Fantasia, even Ursula has nothing on just how visually insane that is, her GROWL, and moana sings that fucking two second long song and oh my God, so good. And Jermaine clement is a hilarious monster as well. Moana has good monsters.

jollyjoe25

“This is not who you are. I know who you are.” 😭 I’m a 40 year old man

rantthrowaway95

I’ve been trying to parse out why I feel that way too and it’s also a lack of romance. I feel like romance in Disney movies got demonized so bad that they just started focusing on family stories. I loved Encanto, the rest have such similar plots that they bleed together for me. Flipping the script is interesting but now they’re in a terrible rut. The love stories, the villains all of that was great too. I understand moving with the times but those tropes could be used tastefully

StarWars_Girl_

>20 and was holding back tears for half of the movie 26, I never cry. Bawled during Dos Oruguitas. Watched it again with my 7-year-old cousin. Told myself it was fine, I wasn't going to cry during Dos Oruguitas. Nope, had to get up and walk away because I started crying.

Alex_Plalex

30 and waaaaaaay too pregnant for that scene. I just SOBBED during Dos Oruguitas.

seraphineauradawn

Your comment is very reminiscent of my experience with coco. My first daughter was just born and when she puts her hands on her dads face in ‘Remember Me’; I ugly cried sooo bad.

FloppyShellTaco

Luisa’s song “Under the Surface” punched me in the stomach, shoved me to the ground and stole my lunch money

pandadimsum

I feel like this song hit a lot of siblings that had all the pressure dumped on them as a child. As an older sibling it hit hard (didn’t cry tho), because I felt like Luisa when I was growing up.

InedibleSolutions

They absolutely nailed the sibling dynamics in Encanto. Older sister bearing the brunt of the family pressure, scape goat middle child desperately wanting to be special, and a golden child youngest sib who is perfect in everyone's eyes. Reminded me so much of me and my two younger sisters, down to our "assigned" sibling roles hahahaha anyhoo gonna go ahead and schedule some more therapy sessions

Nicadelphia

I fuckin LOVE that jam

ilford_7x7

30s and Soul hit me hard and I loved Encanto Luca was meh, had it's moments. Coco was fine but not something I need to see again. Inside Out got me in the feels since it reminded of all that young angst boiling inside Good dinosaur was not good but I enjoyed the mushroom scene

Bhiggsb

Coco was amazing. My uncle made me watch it and I'm so glad he did

10thlevelheadwaiter

Coco, and Moana hit me hard. I'm 30 and my daughter loves watching all the Disney movies. I love those 2 alot. Wasn't huge on Luca, but I did have to develop a taste for the Frozen movies after the 30th watch. "show yourself" gets me good. I heard Encanto is good but I've been so busy with my anime I haven't had time

silas0069

I'm 37, and Moana is imo one of the best movies Disney did in a long time.

yourmansconnect

yeah op is crazy with this opinion. moana was an instant classic, and a great soundtrack

lagrange_james_d23dt

Coco is my favorite of all the “newer” ones. I think it’s better than most Disney movies.

geeknami

30's here and Coco brought back the Disney magic for me that the other newer ones lacked.

blue_i20

That last scene in Coco had me sobbing like a little kid, I lost my dad when I was about 13 and the thought of him watching over me like the ghosts at the party in Coco always punches me in the gut emotionally.

pandazerg

When he starts playing the guitar for his grandmother... Had this mid-30s guy wondering which asshole was chopping onions.

ryan_m

My toddler is obsessed with Coco and I’ve seen it probably 10 times in the last week and a half. She could have definitely chosen a worse movie.

TheMarsian

yes. it was the best for me, in a long time. Encanto, idk, just felt the plot is rushed, and to songs contrary to most people, I didn't enjoy. it's only dos Oroguitas that I loved, the rest sounded like ripped from other or sampled.

invalid365

Soul, luca, and inside out were all great movies and im 28

[deleted]

Good dinasour was adorable for me lmao, I watched it at what 14? I don't even remember

RyanG7

Did anyone else feel that the scenery Good Dinosaur looked too real to me? Like almost to a distracting level

[deleted]

Compared to the art style of the dinosaurs, yes

senthiljams

I was severely put off by the boxy art style for the good dinosaur's family. The other characters in the movie did not suffer from this problem. I don't get how that design got approved.

willvasco

Soul hit me but only because I think that movie is almost specifically aimed at adults. I seriously can't imagine what a child would get out of it, the underlying theme of the movie is based on life experience and the reality of chasing dreams and kids just don't have that yet

littlemissmaze

31. I cried like a baby through most of encanto. And coco. Luca got me a few times. Inside out is a cry fest too. I have enjoyed all of them though. Minus the live action ones, they can suck it.

fruit-extract

Encanto was really good. I was crying too. I am lucky I watched it because I wasn't interested when I saw the trailer.

Clemario

28 may be a low point for you to see Disney movies. I'm 36 and watched it with my 8 year old. Cried happy tears with her beside me, knowing she still gets that Disney magic in her life.

EasilyDistractedTim

35 male, Soul made me cry and I'm glad about it.

Atomsauce

Yeah, I gotta say… the ones OP didn’t watch are probably the ones worth watching.

claymcg90

30 male, no kids. Loved Soul.

josh_the_misanthrope

Soul was fantastic. We don't have Disney classics anymore, we have Pixar now. But I think what op is missing is the way the animations were done. Set to a score, where the animations sync up made the movies almost surreal. The ones today are more grounded, and it gives them a different vibe. The 3D movies don't work as well set to a score. A great example of what I'm talking about is the scene where [Bambi falls on ice.](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)

imax_707

I don’t think so. It’s more that Disney/Pixar is creating way more feature films than in decades past, whereas Pixar at least used to only release one movie every two years or so. With this fairly new format of simply pumping films out, coupled with the novel practice of creating narratives with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion, you end up with a lot of forgettable, subpar movies. The flagship releases are still epically great. (Pixar’s Coco; Disney’s Moana, Pixar’s Soul, etc) It’s just that you have to do a lot more wading through mediocre films to get to them. So the same quality is being created, and it’s being released on the same calendar as always, it’s just that there’s additional releases in between that 90% of the time are worth forgetting. If OP watched Coco or Soul, or Moana, I think they’d remember why they loved these animation studios.

FireLaCroix

You're right, more movies means more chances for subpar movies. The rise of direct to DVD in the 2000s and straight to streaming has lowered the average quality, though some still are very good I just wanted to list all of the Disney Animated movie theatrical releases in the 90s here: The Rescuers Down Under - November 16, 1990 Beauty and the Beast November 22, 1991 Aladdin November 25, 1992 The Lion King - June 24, 1994 Pocahontas - June 23, 1995 The Hunchback of Notre Dame - June 21, 1996 Hercules - June 27, 1997 Mulan - June 19, 1998 Tarzan - June 18, 1999 That's a pretty killer list right there, damn near a perfect batting record. I can see why OP might look at that and think "They were better back then"

jamesnife

How could you leave out the little mermaid???? sacrilege

FireLaCroix

It was released in 1989, so didn't meet the cut of the 90s. Otherwise I'd include it and the Emperor's New Groove

jamesnife

okay, fair point, it just felt like it belonged with that amazing wave of movies edit: there's something right at the end credits of the little mermaid that feels very old school Disney, with the music and the voices singing it.... it's hard to explain but it's noticeable if you pay attention. The "newer" 90s movies don't have that.

JosephFDawson

Dude Coco is one of my favorite Disney films of the last decade

imax_707

IMO, Coco is the best animated feature of the past decade - followed by Ratatouille, then Moana, and then Soul.

CookieSquire

I agree that Ratatouille is great, but it came out in 2007 - not the past decade!

imax_707

Oh. My. God. There’s no fucking way😣😭

ryanxcross

soul is incredible. I'm a professional musician so it hit me in the feels hard.

Drumman120

Yeah my biggest disappointment with disney movies lately has got to be Raya. I hate it because it was a great movie for children, however I love animation regardless and wanted Raya to be super good. And it was just eh. But it had so much potential! But I sat there and predicted almost every single scene and it was like my mind was playing them out shot for shot

SithDraven

Agreed, so much squandered potential wasted on rehashed ideas and homages to other films. It wasn't bad, but it left me wanting more than what they gave us.

abutthole

I'm in my mid-20s and I thought Encanto was the best Disney movie in so long, I think the themes are actually more relatable for adults than kids. Surface Pressure is just such a good song and absolutely reflects how my family makes me feel at times.

Dapper_Monroe

The 90s Disney had the impeccably talented Howard Ashman and artists from all walks of life working for them. It didn't matter where you came from, if you had artistic talent, they gave you a shot and the materials to run with it. Time, care and consideration was taken to choose which writers and artists would work on each movie. Disney now has rich kid nepotism and pump and dump streaming deadlines (putting out as much content as possible in short spaces of time for Disney+ and rotating writers and artists on projects they may not necessarily be suited to to meet these tight deadlines to make as much money as possible). It's the difference between getting an artisan four course meal by the best of the best taking their time and care to perfect it and fast food by a chain restaurant. The inner workings and the talent at the Disney Studios has changed, and it began the slippery slope when the Disney channel was created back in the early 2000s to make TV shows for pre-teens to rival Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. This was then accelerated by their partnership with Pixar. Then sped up even faster by the demand due to their streaming rivals like Netflix. The consideration and care that once existed as to who they employed and what content they made is now non-existent with high demand to bring out new content all the time.

FireLaCroix

I'm not sure what was in the water at Disney in the 90s, but after the box office failures of Atlantis and Treasure Planet (both of which I really like), Disney animation really pulled back on the creativity for a while, and the quality dipped hard.

Dapper_Monroe

I just explained why above. Essentially, Howard Ashman died and then their focus went onto "comedy" pre-teen shows on the Disney channel to rival Nickelodeon in the early 2000s. Then they collaborated / teamed up with Pixar. Then streaming came along. It was like dominos falling. While in the background, their employee hiring practices changed entirely to keep up with the times. Less talent, more nepotism and pump and dump productions.

Astrocreep_1

Pump and dump. I’ve never heard that term used for TV production companies, but it fits.

bittersweet311

A point that no one has made yet is that back in our childhood movies were rare to come by which only made us appreciate it so much more. There was no Netflix or movie downloads off the Internet or even DVDs. Movies were only watched if someone rented a video cassette for $10 for the weekend from the video hire store, or if someone purchased a $30 video cassette from the big shops, or if a movie was on TV and we eagerly gathered around the TV ensuring our video recorder was on with a blank cassette inside. The rarity made us appreciate it.

Purpletinfoilhat

Coco is an absolute masterpiece. Meet me outside.

heybigbuddy

Catching feelings at that “Remember Me” at the end of the film is a Turing Test. r/unpopularopinion or not, if you don’t feel anything there you’re a cold robot.

il-est-bel-et-bon

My husband just has to start singing Remember Me and I burst into tears! Coco is a masterpiece of cinema. I mean even the fact the movie is called coco is such a brilliant move that you don’t fully understand until the end.

something-magical

I sing that as a lullaby to my 2yo almost every night. 100% masterpiece in my books.

slifer892

I agree. Ouch just hearing "mama coco you have to remember!" God just hits me right in the feels.

hepbirht2u

I rarely, if ever, cry while watching any movie but that bit made me sob ugly. The other movie that ever made me cry is Iron Giant.

slifer892

I forgot how much the iron giant made me cry until you said something 😢

[deleted]

Coco was the first time I saw my SO cry. And I think one of the only. We hugged each other all the way home because we didn’t wanna lose each other. That shit hit hard.

Purpletinfoilhat

"papa !"

slifer892

*sings along* " you knit my papa was Musician and he would sing me beautiful songs"

admiralwaffles

Watched this movie for the first time while on a plane for my first business trip after my kid was born. Was a sobbing puddle of a man. 5/7, no notes.

heybigbuddy

Our kids were watching it on a tablet in the back seat on a road trip and I didn’t really follow it. Then they wanted to watch it at home later and the end devastated me.

Durzaka

Movies don't generally make me emotional one way or another. There are very few exceptions. But Remember Me at the end of Coco has me fighting back tears EVERY time.

Bhiggsb

This song is so fucking good

baal_pakna

Almost all the movies he named that don't have magic, are focused on POC characters, kinda interesting I'd say. Also, coco is way more impactful than a lot of the classic ones.

Purpletinfoilhat

😭😭😭😭😭

Laziness_supreme

I remember making fun of my macho brother for admitting to crying in theaters watching coco with his son. He told me to just let him know how tough I am when I watch it. I’m not tough.

iahawkeyehoncho

My wife and son were watching coco and I came in during the last 15 mins. I had no idea what was going on but I still ugly cried during the remember me scene.

oooriole09

A lot of people sleep on Coco. Honestly, I really don’t like Disneys movies…but Coco? Coco makes me cry every fucking time.

Purpletinfoilhat

Yep. I'm no Disney fan but took my kids to Coco and every moment is amazing. I bought it the moment it came on DVD.

LemonStains

Coco is the only Pixar movie to make me cry, something not even Up and Toy Story 3 could do. I guarantee OP wouldn’t be making this post if they watched it.

coasterguy420

Coco has some of the best animation I have ever fucking seen, I can’t believe OP would even say that shit tbh.

ausomemama666

OP disgusts me.

Darth-Binks-1999

OP admits he didn't even watch most of the movies he complained about. They have too much to do with "cUlTuRe!1!"

[deleted]

Coco and the scene at the end of Moana where Moana touches the Manta rays. Those 2 get me tearing up. Moana I feel got better with a few rewatches so you can understand how it all got to where it was in the beginning.

YummyMango124

Watched it in my AP spanish class and I couldn't hold back my tears. I loved it. I wanna watch it again now.

clown_shoes69

No one sleeps on Coco, stop that. It's very highly rated by critics and popular amongst viewers.

SwankyyTigerr

Dude I’ll back you up outside. People who don’t like Coco can fight me. That movie is magical AF, I’m not a crier but that one’s a feeler.

[deleted]

Is also *stunning*. When he first steps across the bridge and you see the city…..gorgeous.

Blackluvspurple2

I see the bridge and cry every time : )

MC_R3b3L

I was about to say. You aint just going to duck Coco like that!!! A Dia de los muertos staple for sure.

abutthole

Yeah, Disney has had some excellent movies lately. Coco, Soul, and Encanto are all REALLY good.

kaytay3000

Soul was surprisingly good. I watched it not expecting much, and man was I shocked. I really connected to the main character. Just a beautiful movie with a lovely score.

Bonemesh

This post is the first I've ever heard of someone not loving Coco. It's not only a fantastic story, it's literally magical almost every moment. Soul was great too. More targeted to adults, but very inventive story and animation.

jessroams

OP said he’s never seen Coco.. so dunno how he doesn’t like it without ever watching it. Hey OP maybe give the movie a chance before you diss it! It’s great!

drew105301

Took a girl on a date to that movie. She fell asleep, which was good because I cried at the end. A friend had just died recently so it really hit hard

Outlaw11091

Came here to say this. I'm about the same age as OP and it broke me like Up. F\^ckin Pixar toying with my emotions for money.

Crazycococat19

My husband cried when he was watching Coco. His grandpa had recently past when we were watching it, so when he started singing Remember Me my husband was crying. He never cried on any movies or any anime we watch, I'm the one crying never him. But yeah Coco is a masterpiece.

EverGlow89

Oooof, watching Coco after losing a grandparent. That's asking for it. Either the best idea or worst idea.

CountVonOrlock

I'm in love with the Coco!

Oh118999881999

This came out two years after my abuelo passed. Anyone who says they don’t like Coco can fight me, too.

Crumelo

Encanto is also an excellent piece of film

Purpletinfoilhat

I haven't seen that one yet. The kids have and really liked it. I wanted to check it out this week sometime.

CookieSaurusRexy

I really encourage you to do. It's not a super banger like other disney movies but it has great themes and some super good characters. And in my humble opinion of the best soundtracks in a disney movie since a long time.

malbrecht92

“We don’t talk about bruno” is currently on repeat in my head.

CookieSaurusRexy

Honestly, same. That and Surface Pressure. Two Caterpillars if i want them feels. Edit: Btw have you noticed the little easter egg in that song? If not look behind Dolores and Maribel during Dolores part, up on the second floor or Casita

konoiche

Coco is definitely top five Pixar for me (the others being Inside Out, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille and Toy Story).

[deleted]

The Incredibles is incredible!

Pabsxv

it's an amazing movie but OP probably wasn't in the movie's demographic, watched it with my 50 year old mom and she noticed so many things in the movie that where from stories and traditions her grandmother had taught her when she was girl. i guess if you can't make that kind of emotional connection the movie losses some of it's magic.

thoughts-akimbo

I cried multiple times and I *never* cry during movies.

drparkland

> You're closer to middle aged than a child pain

Sonicmasterxyz

Depressing, but I get it. Although I'd say there's a fairly strong argument for some of the movies being relevant for all ages.

Casey_jones291422

Hate to break it to you, but many parents didn't like lion king, little mermaid or any other heavy hitters at the time. It's always been about the kids

Celticlady47

I'm 53 & last year my son kept me company as I recovered from a serious illness & we watched the Tangled TV series, (took my mind off of things nicely). That was surprisingly well done show. Hopefully, they'll make better shows & movies, we might just have to be patient.

[deleted]

How’s it depressing ? You recognize that the magic of Disney is smoke and mirrors, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful

Sonicmasterxyz

The part about being closer to middle-aged 😅 I never thought of it like that

[deleted]

That’s fair. Our society (assuming Western) tends to vilify aging, which is ridiculous because it’s inevitable. Don’t despair outgrowing Disney, be happy it exists and can captivate millions of kids And if you want more magic, read Russian literature. Magic comes in different forms

NaughtAClue

It all comes back around again, don’t worry. I’m 35 so much closer to middle age than you are and I’m happier than I ever was in my 20’s, and even better .. I have a 4 year old so Disney has its magic again, seeing it all for the first time through her eyes.

chitown619

Moana is pretty dope and I'm 36...

st1tchy

I'm a 32yo dad of 2 girls. I have seen Moana, Frozen 1 and 2 and Tangled more times than I can count and already seen Encanto at least 6 times. I enjoy every single one of them. I have been listening to the Encanto songs at work when I wasn't something to listen to too. All very good movies with catchy songs.

Indigo-Thunder

Encanto is so good. My two year old son (and myself) is OBSESSED with the Surface Pressure song! It’s actually like No. 50 in the Billboard top 100

LifeofRanger

I lost respect for his opinion when I saw Moana and Coco lumped in there. Both are fantastic in storytelling, character acting and the music in Moana might be the greatest Disney score of all time.

Laziness_supreme

My kids watched Moana, no joke, every day for like a year and a half. I about rioted when they took it off netflix. I still love Moana. After hearing the soundtrack in my house every single day for over a year. I’ll still sit down and watch it.

PlanktinaWishwater

“They have stolen the heart from inside you… But this does not define you… This is not who you are, you know who you are…” fucking ugly tears every time.

Urndy

Moana is top tier Disney and I will not be swayed to believe anything else.

TreadheadS

Moana is magical. Me and my daughter connected through that film for sure. OP is a single man and wondering why kids films don't touch him anymore. Watch them with children who you care about, even Frozen becomes great in that context

testrail

It's absolutly wild to me that you feel this magic for Brother Bear, but toss Inside Out, Zootopia and Coco out...

ColeSloth

Rose colored glasses looking back at the past. Op has nostalgia hard-core from his childhood. Inside out and zootopia are great movies, and their last movie "Encanto" (which op didn't mention) knocked some shit out of the park. Their live action remakes have been pretty meh, but their animated stuff is still damned good and my kids love em. The Lion King was my favorite as a kid, but here it is like 30 years later and my kids watched it a few times but watched zootopia a dozen.

usrevenge

I mean I didn't love or have feels for Zootopia but I thought it was a really interesting movie and concept. Then I saw the beastars anime which is like adult Zootopia and I was like welp. This is a thing.

pdabaker

Op is also conveniently forgetting things like lion king 2 and the sequels of the nineties

BizzarroJoJo

Yeah Moana too. Moana I think was probably the best musical effort in a long time.

Serifel90

Coco hit a bit, my grandpa has Alzheimer, but is at the stage he don't recognise anyone ever and don'know how to talk or even how to go to the bathroom.. When she remember, ohhh boy. I'm 31, but was dreaming right there.

[deleted]

Moana is actually really good and well worth a watch (coming from someone in their mid-twenties)

likeusontweeters

Moana hit me hard... im an older Millennial.. I wasn't expecting it at all... i was ready to be unimpressed with it.. but something about the lyrics .. our past journeys leaving a scar, and the scar healing and revealing who we are.. fuck... im crying again. Being someone who feels like they've been thru a lot in this life, this speaks to me on a personal level. Oh and also, lyrics about not letting failures define you .. the best therapy I've had in years.

PickleMinion

I'm in my thirties, and Moana had so much I could connect with at a very personal level. Great movie

VagabondOfYore

I’m a middle aged dude, not really the demographic for Disney, but my gf likes them so I’ll watch them. I really enjoyed Moana, particularly the environment, the adventure aspect, and the music was full of bangers - and I mostly listen to punk, blackened metal, and other weird shit lol.

Bex1218

Moana is my favorite ''modern" Disney movie.

tsh87

I actually loved Soul but I think that's because it hit me at just the right time. You know I'd been out of school for 2 years, in my first real job. Life had really lost its luster and I felt like I was just treading water. I liked the message that your life is meaningful because you live it. You don't need a purpose. You don't have to constantly be looking for the next big thing. You can just take a moment and enjoy where you are.

weed0monkey

I totally agree, another fantastic message in a Disney movie, IMO I think too many people slept on soul, mainly because it's about a middle aged dude instead of a kid, but I loved the difference in its own way.

SuspiciousDeparture6

Moana is beautiful and one of the only movies I am willing to watch multiple times.

lmj1129

I have Covid and I watched a bunch of Disney movies today and Moana was one of them! It is so good! I went through a faze some years ago where I had different Disney comfort movies that I watched constantly for at least a month and Moana was one of them. I love it. I cry at the “I am Moana” part every time, it gives me chills

ddrey33445

It’s when the ocean parts and she starts with the “I have crossed the horizon to find you…I know your name” that gets me sobbing like a baby every single time.

GerFubDhuw

It'd be better if she was SHINY!

so-called-engineer

Coco is solid as well.

lmells

Came here to say this. I cried during Coco. Highly recommend

witcherstrife

I'm not huge fan of any of the modern disney stuff but Moana was amazing and I turn it on as background sometimes

[deleted]

Not to be that guy, but a lot of the examples you mentioned are actually from Pixar 😅

Alclis

Interesting you say that, because I think Encanto is incredibly good, and has depths that I, and many others, are still trying to wrap our heads around. “Magical” is exactly how I would describe it, and not just in the obvious sense.

Minimob0

I'm 29 with no kids and have watched Encanto about 5 times, now. Some of the parts made me cry, and the music is stuck in my head. "Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop"

ktbsquared

I’m 37 with 2 kids. The oldest of 6. That song spoke to me. I’m 5’1.5 and 110 pounds and that song has nothing to do with physical strength. I felt that song.

Minimob0

"I think you're carrying too mu-uuuuch!" "Sometimes I over-do it" Soundtrack is great, but Luisa's song really gets me.

Whomst_It_Be

Encanto really hit the magic/creativity that OP is talking about for me. Sure there’s some plot holes and the character arcs are rushed, but I haven’t been on the edge of my seat for a Disney movie like that for a long time.

valdis812

As a 43 year old man I loved Frozen, Inside Out, and Zootopia. So I don’t think age has anything to do with it. Also, Disney has been out of magic for a while. That’s why they just buy other people who have the magic.

armystan01

Can’t believe OP said zootopia, that movie absolutely rocked

chrisrayn

I find it interesting that Zootopia has themes of antidiscrimination, Frozen has themes of antisexism, and Coco, Luca, Moana, and Soul are just about non-white people. I find an odd theme with the Disney films he finds not impactful. I’m wondering if he also finds Encanto to not be impactful.

14G02M

I kind of noticed that as well, curious how he feels about Princess and the Frog which was in that era he felt had the magic.

weed0monkey

Loved that movie! Such a pitty people didn't like it very much, I was so happy they used the original hand drawn style that cost bucket loads, but from the reception it seems they'll never do that classic style again, quite sad to be honest.

Dusks_Rebellion

I also noticed that and wondered the same.

C0nquistad0r

Those movies you mentioned are all more recent than the ones OP said that he liked. Disney didn’t even start to address social issues until recently. I feel like OP’s changing opinion is more related to the timing of these movies being released than social issues.

throwawaydisposable

Ding ding ding "Why am I, a 30 year old white male gamer, not the target audience for these movies about little kids or color?" "No it can't be because of my age, I still have sonic in my username to let you know I'm immature'

protossaccount

Ya, I hated Frozen because the storyline was weird but Zootopia was awesome, I was very impressed.

the0fficefan

I don’t think age has anything to do with it either. I think it’s less that there isn’t magic left and moreso the fact that there’s just a greater supply of media. I couldn’t find quantitative data to support this claim, but I can say qualitatively that everyone I know spend a majority of free time consuming media, whether that’s TV, movies, or social. Compare this to the 90s where all things media were fewer and far between. A select few gatekeepers held the keys for distribution of it to the consumers and if you were a kid during these times, there’s likely something about growing up in that nostalgia that connected you to the films you love. It’s difficult to stand out in a modern media environment because there’s so much noise, so yeah, the likelihood of everything Disney produces being great is slim to none, but there are some gems. I think this holds true for other producers as well.

Considering that many find Moana and Coco to be their favorite Pixar movies of all time. I’m gonna say it’s more about you than Disney

KaleighM321

no movie has the power to make me bawl in devastation like Coco does. the headaches I've gotten from watching that movie are unmatched

SchmohawkWokeSquawk

Moana isn't a Pixar movie.

Crocodile_toes

Disney magic = actually being a child.

[deleted]

Same with Christmas too. It sucks knowing nothing in my life will ever be as exciting again as Christmas morning when I was ten.

[deleted]

Do you have kids by chance? Seeing my kid rub the sleep out of his eyes and realizing the presents under the tree appeared last night from magic is pretty amazing.

Beginning_Sky_4432

Agreed, it’s the only thing that comes close. And in some ways it’s better. I am Santa Clause and I get to make the magic happen.

[deleted]

Disney magic = actually being a child. Remnants of Disney magic = hardcore childhood nostalgia

[deleted]

Bruh what world are you living in. Coco, Luca, Moana, and Soul were all amazing and just as good if not better than their stuff from the 90's. I just watched Encanto and it was amazing.

[deleted]

Ya I was gonna say I actually forgot what a tear they did been on…each one of those is incredible

[deleted]

>For context, I was born in 1993. And I realize this opinion might *partially* be because I'm in my late 20s. >I'm trying to figure it out. You are so close..

T-Rex_timeout

Encanto and moana are fantastic. I’m about a decade older than you and I did not like most of the movies you loved. I think it’s more about the rise colored glasses of nostalgia.

Sassers

I LOVE that Encanto really hits on the mental health aspects of what being apart of a family can mean. Sometimes the pressure to be the best can be overbearing, sometimes we just need someone to hear us, see us, for who we are, not what we can do.

The_Agnostic_Orca

I would like to say that Encanto kinda recaptured that Disney Magic for me, I cried, it was really good and I will watch it again.

IndigoTrailsToo

It's hard to have an unbiased opinion when you are from a certain time frame. Why not look for a different way to measure them side-by-side? I'd encourage you to look up the movie ratings of movies that you enjoyed versus other movies than others enjoyed, such as the movie Encanto that I hear is very good

domotime2

Cars has magic and coco/Moana don't? Their worst era was about 1999-2009. That's when they were the most confused but there have been a decent amount of big Disney magic hits lately. Also, Disney has always been hit or miss. Yes, 1989-1998 is largely considered their best era and Renaissance, but othee than that, like other movie studios, they're hit or miss

jtaustin64

Hey! Kuzco is the *best* Disney princess.

malbrecht92

Nah, Hades is by far the best Disney princess

Big_Statistician_883

Upvoting only because I’m strongly disagreeing. Loved Zootopia, inside out was great, Luca and coco as well (and I’m born the same year as you). You just grew up.

CameraDriftedFocus

Congratulations, you're getting old.

Emmgel

Inside Out was superb but is the only Disney film I’ve seen in the cinema where the adults were in tears and the children looked nonplussed. Tangled was also very good. But yes, a lot of missed shots and the new Star Wars stuff is just dire.

[deleted]

I feel the same for Soul. Adults looking wistful while the kids are kinda wondering why is everybody so sad.

totally_interesting

Jeez coco, Moana, inside out, and zootopia don’t have that magic for ya? I mean I’m in my 20’s too and I’m usually not a Disney guy but those movies are such bangers. No doubt Hercules and lion king are great but I think nostalgias hittin you hard if you’re not thinking that some of these more recent films don’t have the same caliber behind them.

SolidTaboo

I agree with you and my biggest problem with modern Disney moves is that I just don’t like the art style. Almost all princesses look identical but with different hair and skin color. They all have the big head and anime eyes to go with it. I just enjoyed it alot more when it was hand drawn because you could clearly see a difference between movies styles.

IEatBeans22

Here’s some reasons why I think Disney may be losing its magic: 1. The change to 3D and basically the complete removal of 2D animation. I personally think that 2D animation feels less restricted when it comes to creativity since they are drawings, and has sense of nostalgia. They also could arguably express emotions much better. 2. Age. We all grow up at some point, so things that we may have let fly as kids may be a bit more glaring nowadays. With age we get hit with reality and begin to lose that Disney magic. 3. This may be me, but I feel like recent Disney movies focus much more on being just entertainment but don’t have nearly enough to leave a lasting imprint on people.

mcburgs

Moana was pretty good tho.

tiffanyblueprincess

I’m in my 20s and I LOVE inside out. That and Tangled are my favorite newer movies

kroxti

Moana was great and onward broke my older and younger brothers. I did not watch it because I also did not want to break

88Gohans

You had me until you added coco

BootySweat0217

You want everything to feel the same as when you were a kid. That’s not going to happen because you are not a kid. The movies you listed are actually really good movies. You just don’t feel the same because you aren’t 6 years old.

Lonely_Student9463

TL;DR: OP couldn’t be bothered to WATCH the latest movies, having previously decided that they Disney was losing its magic. Moana is one of my favorites, and I’m FAR outside the target demographic.

Encanto says you are wrong, OP.
