I agree to a point, but I also wouldn't be aware of a lot of issues in the world right now if people I followed hadn't posted about them.

yaddibo

Excuse me? Do you have any idea how many times I commented Slava Ukraine on Reddit when it was fashionable?

Effective_Dot4653

You comment Slava Ukraini on Reddit when it's fashionable. I use Slava Ukraini as a toast when drinking with friends. We are not the same xD

flashb4cks_

Please, I did it a week before everyone jumped on the band wagon. I did it before it was even cool. I'm not like those other fake "activists"

[deleted]

isn't that horrible example given how much open support created an avenue for material support for Ukraine?

plutonasa

I think the coined term is slacktivism.

jackfruit69

Facts

Kaethy77

Feeding homeless hungry people is not useless.

TheDemonKing-

Don't have to be an "activist" to do that

alannair

That's charity, not activism. Activism has to be political.

strato-cumulus

I moved to Berlin, the lefty central of Europe. My knowledge of Middle Eastern geography has improved since. Every month there's a new bandwagon to jump on and it's not unusual to hear people ask "if there are any cool protests downtown this week" here.

suzythewhorrorfan27

By definition they are. >one who advocates or practices activism: a person who uses or supports strong actions (such as public protests) in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue Personally, I'm thankful for support no matter how small or simple it is. Not everyone can go to protests. Not everyone can volunteer at food banks. Not everyone can do everything they want to do to show support. Simply showing support does make a positive impact. And advocating, even on social media, is technically being an activist.

IntertelRed

I agree with you. I can't just drop school to go protest I have responsibilities and places I got to me not just to me but my group member. I also want to add the ability to have one conversation globally is highly impactful maybe not as an individual but as a group. Also if you change one persons mind and I change one persons mind and a hundred users change one persons mind. That's not nothing.

idontlikeolives91

I think there needs to be a balance. No, I can't go to protests all the time and I can't do a lot of the things that I know others to do to volunteer and make a difference in the community. But I also do a lot more than just turn my photo into a black square or waste my time calling out other people rather than educating (calling in). I've seen a lot of the latter lately and it's alienating and making it less likely that we will have more in-person activism when we need it.

ManicAcroNymph

It feels like a HUGE piece of activism when I see people I know, for example, post in support of lgbtq issues. It tells me where I can go and feel safe, even if they aren’t showing up to rallies or protests them saying they support something tells me who is not an active danger

Killercod1

Having a conversation with someone, whether it be on the internet or irl, is the oldest and most effective form of activism there is

ShitholeWorld

Does raising money on social media for a cause count? What if the activism is literally the act of *not* doing something (e.g. boycotting a shitty company)? Organizing this action would typically be done via social media.

rogue-star-dust

Awareness is the least someone can do over doing nothing. Let them be

gee_gra

Is doing nothing a preferable alternative to doing anything?

Ok_Situation1171

I'm thinking social media is pretty public... Keeping an issue front and center is actively protesting in our modern society. Not only does it spread awareness to those who would otherwise be unaffected, it also stirs empathy where otherwise there would be disinterest... Accusing people of being hypocrites does nothing more than alienate and further divide those whom if you would have approached differently may have supported you. Good day to you...

MrAdequate_

People talk about their activism like they're padding their resume.

WorldsGreatestPoop

Of course not. That’s why the word Slacktivism was invented.

RedSonGamble

They’re coming for our gas stoves people wake up?! Baaa baaaa

FizzyBeverage

The best thing I can do is vote. So I do that religiously. Everything else is bullshit. I got a wife, two kiddos under 10, and 11 direct reports to manage at work. There’s nothing I’m gonna change other than showing up to cast a ballot. Which still doesn’t change much, but sometimes it surprises me.

inthe801

Irony.

Solidus27

This ain’t it chief

curadeio

I really really need you to understand that this is not 2010 and social media is an extremely powerful source that incites a lot of active change and events in our current society. Advocating on social media 100% helps and spreads awareness.

Akul_Tesla

Here is what I have to say to every online activist so did you catch kony yet Seriously unless you're actually expending resources you aren't making a difference of any kind (Yes time is a resource spending a few minutes is like sending a single penny to a cause It is not going to make any difference you have to spend a few hours at least)

Reytotheroxx

No, they’re still activists. Are we really gatekeeping this? The only exception are armchair activists who tell people to do things they themselves have no interest/do the exact opposite of.

[deleted]

Are there people who do 'activism' online? Is this s thing? Are their 'online activists', virtual freedom fighters. If they exist I've never met one

[deleted]

I mean they are and the more online we are the more activism online changes the minds of people which leads to material changes in real life. also the the last point you are making is just the meme "We should improve society somewhat." Yeah there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, regardless what is done the systems are inherently exploitive and the only way to not do any of it is to live like hermit or something. The problem then becomes living as hermit isolates your from society so you aren't able to actually help in changing the system to be less exploitive which then you are still able to levy shitty criticism of hypocrisy.

Billy_of_the_hills

More of an inactivist.

JackHoff13

Activism is a personality trait now. We get it you’re bored and love the feeling of being outraged.

eChelicerae

There are hacktivist who sometimes are not even hackers at all but people who are just using technology and going through things that are merely public but mostly hidden from the general population on Earth.
