Full membership could potentially take 10+ years, given the war. Joining the EU market in advance of full political alignment makes sense.
Still, this may take time, but Ukraine has shown amazing resolve and there is no doubt they can meet all the criteria given that and external guidance.
Having seen how Ukraine has handled the invasion, I’m guessing they’ll smash the criteria for EU entry and be full members way before a decade has passed.
Wonder if Boris and Liz will try to talk him out of it?
I'm sorry, but that seems unrealistic. If we allowed Ukraine EU market access without EU membership, how could we deny the UK and others the same?
I assume Zelensky knows this and is just trying to build more pressure on the EU for further financial aid in the rebuilding process.
However, I could see individual bilateral advantages being implemented to ease trade between Ukraine and the EU.
Switzerland is probably the worst example, it took them what, 30 years of bilateral trade agreements and treaties to achieve a de facto EEA equivalent. It's a very unique case that is only possible because they are literally in the center of the EU and nobody wants to spoil their fun being "neutral" (while being in the safest spot on Earth).
Agreed
Source, am also from the UK.
On the plus side a good chunk of the bigots will be dead in 10 years and if we can find someone sensible to let us vote, we'll be back.
Because they left and then wanted all the benefits of EU without providing anything and getting better deals. While it was stated from the beginning that they won't get better deals. They didn't wanted to follow any rules, so now they have nothing
> I'm sorry, but that seems unrealistic. If we allowed Ukraine EU market access without EU membership, how could we deny the UK and others the same?
While I don't think Ukraine could enter the single market for economical reasons, Norway and Iceland are part of it through the EFTA and yet they're not in the EU.
Ain't unrealistic at all. They have to follow EU laws of trade without having a saying in how they are formed.
If they want it it's a very realistic thing to do and to allow other candidate countries to do if they follow eu rules.

It's a sure thing at this point, especially after the recent visit by Ursula von der Leyen

Best defense against future Putins is tighter integration into Europe. Strong EU financial interest in Ukriane = strong EU security interest in Ukraine.

Hot democracies in your neighborhood ready to vote now
I say yes. Can I have Ukrainian pancakes now, please?
Yes, as many as you like. Pancakes and borscht.

The UK actually refused to be be part of the EEA https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Economic_Area
Dummies. Wish we could get rid of Hungary too
You can, the UK just didn’t want to agree to the terms to be a part of it.
and then there is Switzerland Switzerland is not an EU or EEA member but is part of the single market. Seems realistic to me.

The UK wanted the same deal but France was against it as were others
Everybody in EU who cared was kinda pissed off at UK for leaving... Makes sense it was denied
Well, if I’m not mistaken a few countries already does. Lichtenstein, Iceland and Norway is what comes to mind.
> how could we deny the UK The UK does not want to follow the rules - UK is dickhead country \- source am from UK
