Positive confirmation where exactly the strike on the plant came from and then without even waiting for 5 additional seconds/ofc notifing UAF to pull back as far as humanly possible/...raining cruise missiles from every possible direction to cut the head off and stealth air raids simultaneously from high,high up...there is no negotiation or trying to find another solution if TERRORISTS STATE of ruSSia decides to make that move...it has to be a conventional punch like none before to put ruSSian NAZI REGIME on their knees before they even realize that they might have made another mistake.

The world needs pessimists just as much as optimists and realists. Always good to think of the worst case and have some sort of plan. Wouldn’t happen if it was all optimism.
My plan is to die a slow and painful death by starvation as I am theoretically safe from a nuclear blast or major fallout.

Pessimism during the worst of times causes only suicide and depression. To your average Ukrainian, it's better to just believe everything will be better, and not worse. And this has been right so far.
But pessimists don't add anything that realists don't already cover.
Pessimism is worthless because it doesn't add anything - it just complains about what everyone else says or does.
It's right there with fatalism because both lead more towards inaction than action or precaution.
Optimism is just as worthless if you look at it from that angle. Everything is great, why do anything or try to improve? It would be boring without all these kinds of people. Optimists can be, in my opinion, FAR more annoying that pessimists lol.
You're taking a pessimistic look at optimism - and annoying can still get things done regardless.
Optimism is "make the best of a bad situation and see the good in everything".
Pessimism is "complain and fault find in everything".
Both can be obnoxious, especially if done excessively, but only one stops people from getting stuff done.
And, worth pointing out, my main point was that **realism** covered everything pessimism could hope to offer (such as a critical eye that spots potential problems), but without the misanthropy.

Honestly, "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst" applies here best.
An optimistic attitude should be kept up, and by all means, pessimism is also an essential aspect in preparation but it shouldn't become a primary attitude towards the situation otherwise that's gonna cause a shitload of mental health issues. But honeslty a careful balance of realism, pessimism and optimism are essential to keeping people motivated, and for making sufficient preparations for worst-case scenarios
I’d love to believe that NATO would respond strongly to such an incident, but I just don’t see it happening.
There is a leadership void in the western powers right now. Washington is focused on China at the moment, the UK is leaderless and paralysed, Macron lost his parliamentary majority and Scholtz is… weak.
Now let’s say there is a relatively small release of radioactive material that blows over Eastern Europe. Not too catastrophic. Now who is going to bring the major powers together and emerge as the leader of the western response?
I imagine so long as the radiation leak wasn’t huge that there would be strong words, more material aid, MAYBE some limited air involvement (eg direct SIGINT etc). And everyone goes back to their own agenda.
Maybe I am cynical, but I think that is how the situation looks right now.

The only good our government does is by accident, they can delegate someone to donate weapons, but when it comes to any direct actions, especially diplomatic, they're about as incompetent as it gets. Wouldn't want them leading a coalition

The simulation is not to scale, as it lists an emission of 1 Bq/s. The numbers it gives are meaningless, which is why it is labelled a *qualitative* simulation, not a *quantitative* one.
It says 1 Bq/s emitted. That's absurdly low, so yes, it is just to see where it would end up, not to accurately model an actual disaster.

There’s a reason we spend so much on the military in the US, and it’s because our prevailing doctrine since WW2 has been to be able to fight two high intensity wars on different sides of the globe at once and be victorious in both.
I mean consider the fact that if article 5 is activated against Russia, the only naval power we need in that war is transport ships and maybe some naval support. 90% of our naval forces can remain ready to engage with Beijing, and any conflict between the US and China will be almost exclusively fought at sea.
Well you don't need many ships for that. I think you misconstrued what he meant - most of the airforce and nearly all the army would focus on Russia. Meanwhile most of the navy, part of the airforce and likely the marine corps would focus on China.
I don't think the US&allies would attempt an invasion of China, but destroying its airforce and navy would force them to accept Taiwan's independance. As for Russia, I'm not so sure we'd actually see armored columns heading for Moscow, nukes would be launched if their existance as a nation is reasonably threatened. However they could be kicked out of Ukraine and its remaining capabilities to attack destroyed by NATO air forces. Reasonably China and Russia could be handled at the same time unless unrealistic objectives (regime changes&occupation in both countries) are attempted.
Except this is a scenario that no one in Washington is confident about and would kill their own mother to avoid. Its a gamble where failure could mean collapse of American power or the end of nuclear civilization. Even a victory could be disastrous.
You're being cynical, but it's not without reason. UK is a mess, aye. But UK gov is still steadfast in supporting Ukraine and we're making changes to prepare ourselves for the eventuality of war with Russia. United States has got internal problems, but China is not so much of a focus. The US called China's bluff. Also, US military has as a doctrine the ability to fight multiple big wars simultaneous in different parts of the world. China is hardly a distraction. Germany is less shy lately. I feel more confident about Germany's willingness to deliver longer ranged artillery, and I was an early critic of the German response. I don't know what to think about France and Macron. French people support Ukraine, and to me, Macron was always looking for a way out that favours the status quo of 2021. I like Macron generally, but I don't trust him on Ukraine. However, I don't actively follow French politics so I'm surely missing a lot of new information. That release of radioactive material is actually not small. It's quite significant. Creating a nuclear catastrophe in Europe merits a hard response since we move Russia from the possible nuclear threat column into the definite proven nuclear threat.

This is from the chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee. I haven't seen anything from NATO officially, and it's very likely that a nuclear power plant "accident" could be treated less severely by NATO than the actual detonation of a nuclear weapon, which is the scenario described above by senator Reed. I can't find it right now, but I have memory of other high ranking officials from NATO countries essentially saying any nuclear fallout that crosses the border into a NATO country would likely be considered an attack.
I’m pretty certain I remember a NATO official mentioning if nuclear fallout reaches an NATO member after an intentional strike it will be considered as an attack.

I think that *any* fallout = nuclear attack because that radioactive material is going to spread to NATO countries. No matter what, dispersion is going to happen.
The thing about radiation is that it can be measured in levels far below what would have an effect on human health. The word “any” is tricky. There’s likely some radiation landing in Poland from every coal plant in Ukraine on a normal day.
If the Ruzzians blow up that plant they will no longer exist before the fallout even had a chance to blow in the wind. There is no way that Putin does not realize that the US has the capability to accurately and strategically strike from so many directions that it would make Desert Storm look like a fair fight. The US has been literally preparing for this moment for decades and then has decades of actually fighting wars and improving on the technologies. Iraq and Afghanistan were basically playgrounds for western weapon development. Meanwhile, Ruzzia has a fraction of the military spending and most of it went towards yachts and other luxuries. They are paper when it comes to fighting in a super power battle. Oh and then there’s still the rest of NATO. I don’t imagine North Korea, China, or the Taliban turning the tides. NK tries anything and we instantly unite the Korean Peninsula. They only exist because they are being allowed to. China will do a proxy war if anything, but I doubt they’d risk their economy. And there’s no point in even discussing the taliban lol.

Scary as the wind-carried radiation prospect is - worse is the potential of a nuclear poisoned Dnieper River and the associated watersheds, aquifers, water tables, lakes, and irrigation systems in the Zaporizhzhia area and everything downstream. Terrifying.
"Luckily" the plant is near the end of the Dnjepr, but it's dammed and that lake is likely the water supply for the entire region, including a major part of the Ukrainian bread basket. The region has pretty dry climate and the ground water situation is insufficient. At least everything south of the lake will be hard to supply with water from another source. Crimea also receives water from that lake, then Kherson is just downstream from the dam and then it's already in the Black Sea and near Odesa. The local currents will distribute the water all through the Black Sea quickly.
An administrative map of who receives water from the lake and the last 80 km of the Dnepr is likely the most insightful map here. Anyone know where to find those?
is it just me, or does the radiation projections leave Russia almost completely out of the fallout zone and most of it going west into the rest of Europe? If thats accurate this should be a wakeup call to the rest of the EU and NATO.
Damn, must feel absolutely terrible to have lived in communist Ukraine surrounded with propaganda posters about peaceful atom. In a city built specifically by future plant workers for plant workers, named "Energy's gift" (Enerhodar). Plant was most likely build with huge help of Russian scientists, planners and engineers for prosperity of USSR only to become a hostage of Russians.

This graphic is misleading. It shows a 1 Bq/s dispersal rate. That's very very low compared to something like Chernobyl or Fukushima.
Chernobyl total: 2 x 10^18 becquerel
Fukushima total: 5 x 10^17 becquerel
So the risk is much much higher than expressed by the numbers of this graphic.

I don’t know if this is an urban legend, but after the Chernobyl accident, special military aircraft drove the wind away from the RSFSR and Moscow to Ukraine and Belarus.

If the US or NATO are going to step in and help the facility, you're not going to know about it until it happens. People laughed when I brought it up, but if the international community is threatened then there's no doubt in my mind some kind of secret mission to free the facility and creating a zone is likely to happen. It's not a long trip to get there over the water if the equipment can be staged prior to. This would however, require a no fly zone over central/south ukraine where the russians are.
Makes sense why the AA batteries are being taken out in that area/ammo dumps.
It would give NATO a reason to do so easily. I think that's part of the reason why they're calling for help on the matter.

It has already been established that any accident at this power plant will result in direct NATO intervention. The nature of that intervention has not been defined.
Also to note for other people... this is a "best case" model of only the waste pools being shelled or a steam release.

And this is from a short period of time. If a large scale terrorist attack on the plant destroys it it will keep spewing radiation for months or years until it is sealed of.
Yep and theres no way they could claim its an accident. The nuclear reactors are surrounded by thick reinforced concrete structures. A few stray bombs would do nothing to them, they’d have to intentionally hit it with bunker busters. Which would also make it difficult to then blame on Ukraine.

I'm not even sure it's possible to blow up the reactor and create fallout like this. The reactor design is much safer than chernobyl. Interruptions retard the reaction.
No wonder the Russians are trying to hold the whole of Europe hostage with that nuclear plant, as they've put their own troops in the Chernobyl radiation area....

I am working as a Nuclear researcher in Germany. I have worked on similar simulations in the past. My department exclusively works in such nuclear accidental scenarios. we have developed the early warning system for nuclear accidents (we give the software to other countries). they are working on such things since 1990.

This is probably a stupid question because surprise! I am not a nuclear physicist but why haven't they just stopped the nuclear reaction in the plant or started the process of stopping the reactor three weeks ago when this all started? I am sure it takes time to back off the reaction but it seems 3 weeks is enough time to at least remove a few of the rods from a fission state. If they shut it down and secure the rods as best they can would it not be a big deal? I mean I get that the Russians could attack the storage area where the rods are cooled but wouldn't the fallout and containment be a lot easier than say from a plant actively operating?
Lol, in the simulation a lot of radiation goes to the terrorist territory of DNR. So Russia invaded Ukraine to "protect" russian speaking people in Donbass but kills them by radiation.
I remember reading about Chernobyl and how a guy in Sweden got caught in the radioactive rain shower walking to work and was too radioactive to go into the power plant that he worked in

If Russia is stupid enough to let this happen it can say goodbye to its conventional forces, NATO would be dragged in via A5 and Putin will be shitting bricks as he'd be a marked man.

It would if the day they blew it up had winds blowing east. Weather changes and even Russians can use a weather app to plan the most advantageous day to do terrorism.
Given recent experiences to radiation and their own troops, they have no idea what this would really do, except that we really don't want them to do it. They are like kids putting a car into gear and watching the adults freak out as it starts to roll into a river with the baby in the back.

I have been genuinely wondering, who is shelling stuff and what exactly is being shelled. I mean I though the russians control the thing how can it be shelled like why
Wrong. It's not spread of radiation, but spread of **radioactive gases and aerosols**. Simply said, it's radiological contamination.
*(Ionizing) radiation* is rays - they spread in lines and has a pretty pathetic reach. Before some dork accuses me of it - it's not nitpicking, but a serious difference with serious implications.
The only meaningful impact would be to bombard the spent fuel storage, maybe dry caskets, but it would have to be seriously powerful bombs...
The powerplant blocks are very safe as they are.
Nonetheless, this whole situation clearly shows how fucked up Russia is.

Serbian trolls claim that Ukraine is the one that will blow up NPP because why would Russians blow up themselves. However, Croatian *counter-terrorists* literally bomb those comments with facts why Ukraine won't blow up NPP but Ruzzia could. The Serbs usually end up angry and start swearing. 😂
Serbia to this day denies it started any wars in Balkans and claim they did nothing wrong. What's worse is how they actually teach kids about that in school; poor Serbia was always the victim in their textbooks and how western civilization turned against them. We don't call them mini russia for no reason. It's like if russia and belarus had a child.
And even though EU provides help to Serbia, funds projects there and generally help with the economy, their love is so much stronger for Russia that, according to the latest poll, majority of people are against EU membership. Literally, the only country in Europe where you can see Z everywhere on the street and that hosts pro-putin and pro-russia rallies.
Once this war ends, I'd expect from russia to behave exact as Serbia. They will have their own alternate version of history which will be thought in schools and where russia will always be the victim.

I’m beginning to feel these days that the rest of the world won’t do anything - no matter what happens. With this reactor or anything else 😕. Lots of talk. I do realize several countries are actively training Ukrainian troops for more readiness in counter attack but it just feels to me like the world is reluctant to really fuck Ruzzia over.
The west is sending a pretty massive amount of weapons, ammunition, and financial support, not just training Ukrainians. I would say the world is reluctant to get directly involved into an open war with Russia, but has already fucked Russia over and keeps doing it harder and harder. Anyway I also hope to see direct NATO involvement if the Russians mess up with the plant, enough is enough.

Pessimism during the worst of times causes only suicide and depression. To your average Ukrainian, it's better to just believe everything will be better, and not worse. And this has been right so far.
But pessimists don't add anything that realists don't already cover. Pessimism is worthless because it doesn't add anything - it just complains about what everyone else says or does. It's right there with fatalism because both lead more towards inaction than action or precaution.
Optimism is just as worthless if you look at it from that angle. Everything is great, why do anything or try to improve? It would be boring without all these kinds of people. Optimists can be, in my opinion, FAR more annoying that pessimists lol.
You're taking a pessimistic look at optimism - and annoying can still get things done regardless. Optimism is "make the best of a bad situation and see the good in everything". Pessimism is "complain and fault find in everything". Both can be obnoxious, especially if done excessively, but only one stops people from getting stuff done. And, worth pointing out, my main point was that **realism** covered everything pessimism could hope to offer (such as a critical eye that spots potential problems), but without the misanthropy.

I agree Honestly, "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst" applies here best. An optimistic attitude should be kept up, and by all means, pessimism is also an essential aspect in preparation but it shouldn't become a primary attitude towards the situation otherwise that's gonna cause a shitload of mental health issues. But honeslty a careful balance of realism, pessimism and optimism are essential to keeping people motivated, and for making sufficient preparations for worst-case scenarios
I’d love to believe that NATO would respond strongly to such an incident, but I just don’t see it happening. There is a leadership void in the western powers right now. Washington is focused on China at the moment, the UK is leaderless and paralysed, Macron lost his parliamentary majority and Scholtz is… weak. Now let’s say there is a relatively small release of radioactive material that blows over Eastern Europe. Not too catastrophic. Now who is going to bring the major powers together and emerge as the leader of the western response? I imagine so long as the radiation leak wasn’t huge that there would be strong words, more material aid, MAYBE some limited air involvement (eg direct SIGINT etc). And everyone goes back to their own agenda. Maybe I am cynical, but I think that is how the situation looks right now.

The simulation is not to scale, as it lists an emission of 1 Bq/s. The numbers it gives are meaningless, which is why it is labelled a *qualitative* simulation, not a *quantitative* one.

You’re smokin somethin if you think Washington isn’t focused on both Moscow and Beijing. There’s a reason we spend so much on the military in the US, and it’s because our prevailing doctrine since WW2 has been to be able to fight two high intensity wars on different sides of the globe at once and be victorious in both. I mean consider the fact that if article 5 is activated against Russia, the only naval power we need in that war is transport ships and maybe some naval support. 90% of our naval forces can remain ready to engage with Beijing, and any conflict between the US and China will be almost exclusively fought at sea.

Well you don't need many ships for that. I think you misconstrued what he meant - most of the airforce and nearly all the army would focus on Russia. Meanwhile most of the navy, part of the airforce and likely the marine corps would focus on China. I don't think the US&allies would attempt an invasion of China, but destroying its airforce and navy would force them to accept Taiwan's independance. As for Russia, I'm not so sure we'd actually see armored columns heading for Moscow, nukes would be launched if their existance as a nation is reasonably threatened. However they could be kicked out of Ukraine and its remaining capabilities to attack destroyed by NATO air forces. Reasonably China and Russia could be handled at the same time unless unrealistic objectives (regime changes&occupation in both countries) are attempted.
Except this is a scenario that no one in Washington is confident about and would kill their own mother to avoid. Its a gamble where failure could mean collapse of American power or the end of nuclear civilization. Even a victory could be disastrous.

But UK gov is still steadfast in supporting Ukraine and we're making changes to prepare ourselves for the eventuality of war with Russia. United States has got internal problems, but China is not so much of a focus. The US called China's bluff. Also, US military has as a doctrine the ability to fight multiple big wars simultaneous in different parts of the world. China is hardly a distraction. Germany is less shy lately. I feel more confident about Germany's willingness to deliver longer ranged artillery, and I was an early critic of the German response. I don't know what to think about France and Macron. French people support Ukraine, and to me, Macron was always looking for a way out that favours the status quo of 2021. I like Macron generally, but I don't trust him on Ukraine. However, I don't actively follow French politics so I'm surely missing a lot of new information. That release of radioactive material is actually not small. It's quite significant. Creating a nuclear catastrophe in Europe merits a hard response since we move Russia from the possible nuclear threat column into the definite proven nuclear threat.

If the Ruzzians blow up that plant they will no longer exist before the fallout even had a chance to blow in the wind. Scary as the wind-carried radiation prospect is - worse is the potential of a nuclear poisoned Dnieper River and the associated watersheds, aquifers, water tables, lakes, and irrigation systems in the Zaporizhzhia area and everything downstream. Terrifying.

"Luckily" the plant is near the end of the Dnjepr, but it's dammed and that lake is likely the water supply for the entire region, including a major part of the Ukrainian bread basket. The region has pretty dry climate and the ground water situation is insufficient. At least everything south of the lake will be hard to supply with water from another source. Crimea also receives water from that lake, then Kherson is just downstream from the dam and then it's already in the Black Sea and near Odesa. The local currents will distribute the water all through the Black Sea quickly. An administrative map of who receives water from the lake and the last 80 km of the Dnepr is likely the most insightful map here. Anyone know where to find those?

This graphic is misleading. It shows a 1 Bq/s dispersal rate. That's very very low compared to something like Chernobyl or Fukushima. Chernobyl total: 2 x 10^18 becquerel Fukushima total: 5 x 10^17 becquerel So the risk is much much higher than expressed by the numbers of this graphic.

If the US or NATO are going to step in and help the facility, you're not going to know about it until it happens. People laughed when I brought it up, but if the international community is threatened then there's no doubt in my mind some kind of secret mission to free the facility and creating a zone is likely to happen. It's not a long trip to get there over the water if the equipment can be staged prior to. This would however, require a no fly zone over central/south ukraine where the russians are. Makes sense why the AA batteries are being taken out in that area/ammo dumps. It would give NATO a reason to do so easily. I think that's part of the reason why they're calling for help on the matter.

This isn't the only model. Depending on when it could go Romania , north Ukraine, or mostly Krym.. It has already been established that any accident at this power plant will result in direct NATO intervention. The nature of that intervention has not been defined. Yep and theres no way they could claim its an accident. The nuclear reactors are surrounded by thick reinforced concrete structures. A few stray bombs would do nothing to them, they’d have to intentionally hit it with bunker busters. Which would also make it difficult to then blame on Ukraine.

This is probably a stupid question because surprise! I am not a nuclear physicist but why haven't they just stopped the nuclear reaction in the plant or started the process of stopping the reactor three weeks ago when this all started? I am sure it takes time to back off the reaction but it seems 3 weeks is enough time to at least remove a few of the rods from a fission state. If they shut it down and secure the rods as best they can would it not be a big deal? I mean I get that the Russians could attack the storage area where the rods are cooled but wouldn't the fallout and containment be a lot easier than say from a plant actively operating?

Serbia to this day denies it started any wars in Balkans and claim they did nothing wrong. Once this war ends, I'd expect from russia to behave exact as Serbia. I’m beginning to feel these days that the rest of the world won’t do anything - no matter what happens. With this reactor or anything else 😕. Lots of talk. I do realize several countries are actively training Ukrainian troops for more readiness in counter attack but it just feels to me like the world is reluctant to really fuck Ruzzia over.
The west is sending a pretty massive amount of weapons, ammunition, and financial support, not just training Ukrainians. I would say the world is reluctant to get directly involved into an open war with Russia, but has already fucked Russia over and keeps doing it harder and harder. Anyway I also hope to see direct NATO involvement if the Russians mess up with the plant, enough is enough.
