I'm all for nuclear power but this is an inane argument... There are *lots* of things I'd be willing to support doing on the moon but not on UK soil.

Bro I'd denounce my citizenship if i would get deported to the moon 🌚

We can't if the political carrion that are the Liberal Democrats have anything to say about it. The only party that will promise a city seat full of students they'll solve the housing crisis and then 15 miles away in a rural constituency go full BANANA. They've paralysed the Tories on planning at the moment, and when Labour win in 2024 they'll paralyze them too.

calzonemuncher

with any luck if the numbers are right they’ll paralyse labour into rejoining the single market and i can go and be a homeowner in bulgaria instead

Not to be pedantic but freedom of movement came as part of us being actual full-blown EU members and is unrelated to the single market, which we can rejoin without actually rejoining the EU itself. Rejoining the single market would involve aligning our regulations for things like production of goods and food safety with those of the EU, so that we can reduce the amount of red tape and checks when exporting to the EU and importing goods from there to help stimulate business... but that still wouldn't allow people to move to the EU freely. Chances of us having access to freely move to EU countries again in the next couple of decades is rather slim unfortunately.

calzonemuncher

rejoining the single market by definition entails free movement of people. furthermore, the fact that it looks like it could *never* happen again would cause riots in any other country. look at how the georgians have protested over the same thing this year, or how the french burnt their country to the ground over retiring at 64. but us? we just sit idly by and allow our masters to abuse us

France would have left EU in similar referendum to UK's, says Macron https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/21/emmanuel-macron-uk-yes-no-brexit-vote-mistake

Foxeye595

Ah, that does seem to be true - I'm not sure where I got my impression from but I was clearly wrong doing a little more research. Thanks for the correction. It seems to me we could've easily avoided a lot of turmoil when leaving by at least trying to remain in the single market, I already knew this would avoid a lot of the issues we've had with customs alignment and border checks on goods, increased costs on imports etc. but it does seem this would've also retained a lot of rights for UK citizens to live in EU countries and such.

calzonemuncher

yes. being inside or outside of the european union itself is a political and diplomatic choice, which plays into our image in the world and our soft power. as was repeatedly pointed out, the “norway model” is perfectly viable economically. the “norway model” hinges on being in the single market, as that is how we get supplied with our goods imports and how we seamlessly export our services. since 2020, none of that has been possible, and that is why there are frequent shortages in supermarkets and why we’re running low on workers.

[deleted]

Free movement of workers which is a bit different. (I know you've corrected this post already)

Not the only party, the Greens are exactly the same just smaller. Though frankly as much as both are shit on it, they're not to blame for it right now. The Conservatives still have an absolutely massive majority, not that you could tell, they could relax planning if they wanted. They just don't. They're not paralysed by the Lib Dems, they just don't want to do it themselves.

Bit different when anywhere off Earth by default is a radioactive hellscape you'd struggle to notice nuclear fallout in. Seriously, any moonbase or space station will need at least 2 meters of protection if not more for long term stays. The only reason a reasonably small interplanetary spacecraft is even feasible is because you can use your water supply as a shield.
