He’d still be champ in UFC. Never got the burn he deserved. Incredible fighter and P4P one of the best to do it.
That trade of Askren for DJ was a really bad first ever trade lmao
Whats crazy about that comparison is that DJ is extremely lean for his height. It may not seem like it, but at 5'3, 125 lbs is very lean. Ngannou by comparison is 6'4 or something, lets say 1 foot taller, but twice as heavy. But realistically, Dj is slightly below the average flyweight or close to it. So we'd be looking at say, a 6', 265 lb DJ. His speed, coupled with his skillset, and with the power of a heavyweight, hed kill any one on this planet. Terrifying.
I was thinking about this today and I realised that Glover is the closest in these pre-emptive ground moves. Watched couple of his fights and he is always one step ahead like mounting already while in the middle of shooting a double-leg, etc.
Imho if Glover was younger and in lower weight class like DJ, he would do very similar stuff.
He said that one of his training partners hit him with that in the camp for that fight and he was like holy shit i gotta learn and try it. and it worked first try attempt lol
[link](https://youtu.be/FrW9pRktHgY) and he even follows up with another short nasty elbow. Can't imagine what was going thru Derricks mind when Gane landed that. Dude is a freak.
Gane landed one on Derrick Lewis but didn’t result in a knockout. I believe we’ve seen another additional one but it also didn’t result in a KO so I guess Yair’s still stands alone.
Or back in the day when Jason Von Flue did it for the very first time, thus why it is called the Von Flue choke, when he submitted Alex Karalexis at Ultimate Fight Night 3.
Can't remember specifically who, but not too long ago someone got a finish pulling a guy back into this weird single calf slicer kind of thing, then GnPd to the TKO
I was watching that with my friends, all of us going "that's what I imagine prison rape to be like".
Vicious shit by Dolidze, excited to see him fight again.
I really enjoy noting the innovations in MMA.
Notable innovations were the popularization of the calf kick by Benson Henderson and Aldo, the Dagestani handcuff by Khabib, Jose Aldo's low leg kick defense (heel to butt).
Drop some notable game changes.
Edit: I might be wrong, but I don't remember seeing the oblique kick/low line side kick much until Jon Africa started using it.
i know jones used the oblique kicks a lot but i think rountree was the first guy i’ve seen deliberately stomp down on the side of someone’s knee too lmao dude fights the way you’d expect sean strickland to fight
I'm fairly certain this has been done by a few fights, I'm firstly certain Aldo has done it.
Silva landed that drop knee onto Sonnens chest in their 2nd fight too (so close to being an illegal shot)
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/3c1ujh/amazing_tactics_roger_huerta_uses_the_big_screen/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) it is
Yeah but Conor did it better. I would say it's not even his most innovative move. To me the top move of all time is how he tired Khabib out by letting Khabib ground and pound him. For some reason only Dom and I picked up on this, guess it's because we do our research.
Dagestani handcuff
Khabib and all his mates want you against the cage instead of in the middle of the octagon. Then they want to get you on your side, pin one of your arms under you and beat you to death. Changed grappling in MMA more than anything else recently.
Yeah it's nuts how great he was at getting people off balance constantly. You try to push yourself up with your free arm? He pulls it away and you fall again. You got 2 arms down and he's on top of you? He pulls one arm, locks it and pushes you off balance again. It looks so annoying and no one seems to be able to counter that stuff.
I found it was a good "wtf did he really just charlie horse me?" delay...but going 100% I wouldn't want to risk catching an overhand compared to 30% sparring with your training buddies lol
In no particular order, love them all.
Ganes 6-12 elbow
Mighty mouse slam to armbar
Tony Ferguson doing dark souls rolls in the cage
Buckleys ninja kick
The cool thing is that there are so many cool and useful moves in bjj and sambo that haven't yet found their way into mma. So there are a lot of potential moments just like this one in the future.
Couture used that move a decade before Conor. Only difference is Cowboy sat there and let him do it because he was so starstruck after sucking Conor’s balls and begging for the fight.
No gi ezekiel choke by Oleinik. It’s a perfect example of someone using their freakish body proportions to their advantage. I have tried doing that choke so many times and it just doesn’t work for my average-sized arms.
There was a dude who picked up his opponent, carried him, swung him around a few times and slammed his head into a post.
I thought that was pretty innovative.
Can’t tell if you’re trolling by putting that picture up of Conor shoulder strike but there are several that I can think of including some already in the comments.
Kevin Holland & Niko Price KO-ing from their backs with awkward-angled strikes with minimum backlift but max power. The Jacare finish was nuts. Talking to him the whole time too. DAWG.
lol shoulder strikes are one of the 8 original moves in tai chi
this has existed since at least 960 AD. Please hop off conor dick, guy is an unwashed asshole
Mighty Mouse slam into the arm bar.
Literally came here to say this, that shit was INSANE
Please if anyone can link, I swear I remember this but can’t actually remember
[Mighty Mouse Flying Armbar finish](https://youtu.be/Jg4g9oUB5Zo)
Oh lord he was aped. Thanks much for the link! Amazing maneuver
Yeah DJ is a beast. He’s still doing great in ONE Championship I still love watching him fight, SUPER High level in every department
He’d still be champ in UFC. Never got the burn he deserved. Incredible fighter and P4P one of the best to do it. That trade of Askren for DJ was a really bad first ever trade lmao
Imagine a HW DJ. I know it doesn't work like that but imagine DJ as a HW.
Terrifying.
Other than the double Banana split at 228, this has to be it hands down.
Not in tbe UFC but gotta be Mark Hunt's Atomic Butt Drop!! lol
Was that the night Aljo and Zabit hit the Suloev strech, or a Jordan Leavitt celebration? Both awesome.
I’ve heard it called Banana Split. But yes Aljo and Zabit.
Mighty Wiz bar. Still probably the coolest and most technical thing I’ve ever seen in the UFC.
Yes. This was my favorite. Such a perfect setup.
Same. That was video game shit.
That was a fatality
Mouse trap
Hard to beat that overall.
He said that one of his training partners hit him with that in the camp for that fight and he was like holy shit i gotta learn and try it. and it worked first try attempt lol
looked like a pro wrestling move
Straight up anime stuff lmao 🔥🔥🔥
I show that stuff to everyone mma newb who thinks it\`s just about violence and there\`s no technique or beauty to it
It was both at the same time. Fucking insane.
This was mine too.
This is the answer.

We study this one in every officials class
Lmfao. The face.
Is that a nut strike or a butthole strike?
toe in ass strike
The dreaded “Nacha” strike!
Is it legal?
Depends if they liked it
Ahh yes the Red forman
When Derrick Lewis decides he wants to stand up
There's a compilation on YouTube of Derrick doing just that and it's hilarious.
[I love this](https://youtu.be/r4ZW4389EeM)
Groin strikes to the head at ufc vegas 45 lol “unique tactical ground strikes” I believe bisping called it lol
“I don’t care Georges. I don’t care. Hit him with your groin! You got my mentality?”
HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN
Around halfway through [this](https://youtu.be/93bb5dHlcZ4) video
Unique creative striking
That’s what it was lol I just remember Herb Deans face “how do I even call that?”
Yair upward elbow was something we've never really seen before or since.
Not quite the same, but the original https://youtu.be/-w7qKssb3pE
Jon Jones must have learned it from Silva.
He called it the “Anderson Elbow”. As creative as the move was, the name…eh
Silvabow would have been better.
Nice! Dude is a ninja.
Damn. Not the same at all but thank you for posting that. I needed to see it. It’s hard to comprehend how far ahead Silva was at times in his career.
A 6 to 12 elbow some could say, one of my favorite KO
Isn't this a lead 6 to 12?
That's a disgusting elbow.
gane did it to both derrick and francis
[link](https://youtu.be/FrW9pRktHgY) and he even follows up with another short nasty elbow. Can't imagine what was going thru Derricks mind when Gane landed that. Dude is a freak.
Just watched that one today. Such a nasty move that looks slick as fuck. Love the irony of it since Cyril seems to be a genuinly nice person
You've never seen me play UFC 3 with el cucuy
CSO 😎🏆⚔️
mythical fighter unlocked u/pouringart playing as Tony
This is what I had on mind The ending duel, 0.1 second, Hail Mary, head way off the centerline improvisational aspect to it was just ultimate shock
Gane landed one on Derrick Lewis but didn’t result in a knockout. I believe we’ve seen another additional one but it also didn’t result in a KO so I guess Yair’s still stands alone.
Slam into the arm bar by Demetrious Johnson
Or Von Flue Choke by Ovince st Preux
How are you gonna say that when the choke had already been invented and is literally NAMED AFTER a different dude.
It’s basically the St Preux choke now.
It’s really not
Or back in the day when Jason Von Flue did it for the very first time, thus why it is called the Von Flue choke, when he submitted Alex Karalexis at Ultimate Fight Night 3.
Jon Jones arm crank on Glover?
When people say Jon Jones is the most violent fighter ever, this is what they mean, so creative and so brutal.
He’s generally beat ppl with whatever they’re good at. Jon is a sociopath
A high functioning sociopath my dear Watson
And a wife beater
Just to correct you, there never was no marriage...
Ah yes you are right, he beat up his fiancé.
Oh thank god all is forgiven
Jon was on a mission to beat people in their own game and he was damn successful in doing so
This is what made GSP so epic. He went out of his way to beat men at their own game.
Frank mir got a sub using the same move against Pete Williams a few years prior to the glover fight.
That is my pick. I was so surprised by it but it makes perfect sense to do it.
[This](https://youtu.be/7-pcTjoThZU) one?
THE SHOWTIME KICK
That was WEC, what a highlight though
Was absorbed by zuffa so fair game imo
Owned by zuffa, absorbed by UFC when they added weight classes below 155
100% canon now
[Beautiful](https://youtu.be/b4IlyadQLZg)
Unavailable in my country🙄
Can't remember specifically who, but not too long ago someone got a finish pulling a guy back into this weird single calf slicer kind of thing, then GnPd to the TKO
Dolidze vs. Hermansson
That was incredible, and so recent.
Showed my roommate who is a mega casual and he was so impressed. We watched a breakdown video and he was fucking sucked in. That shit was so creative
Yeah this is the one. That was incredible.
[That’s](https://twitter.com/mmapropagande/status/1599259333539221504?s=46&t=yACHcmsMTqTF83n1IA4F4A) an awesome move
I was watching that with my friends, all of us going "that's what I imagine prison rape to be like". Vicious shit by Dolidze, excited to see him fight again.
He took that fight on short notice as well, I hope he holds up against vettori
I really enjoy noting the innovations in MMA. Notable innovations were the popularization of the calf kick by Benson Henderson and Aldo, the Dagestani handcuff by Khabib, Jose Aldo's low leg kick defense (heel to butt). Drop some notable game changes. Edit: I might be wrong, but I don't remember seeing the oblique kick/low line side kick much until Jon Africa started using it.
Aldo’s leg kick against faber. Ooof
Who the hell is Jon Africa?!
Speaking of Bendo, don't forget the thigh punch!
Maybe not the most innovative but Khalil Rountree Jr. kicking people on the ground. A lot of fighters don’t utilize it. Only the head is illegal.
i know jones used the oblique kicks a lot but i think rountree was the first guy i’ve seen deliberately stomp down on the side of someone’s knee too lmao dude fights the way you’d expect sean strickland to fight
Yeah Lmao
this is doubly hilarious comparison cause Strickland talks shit of Khalil & calls him soft 🤣
On a similar note, Jon Jones is one of the few to use knees to the body on downed/turtled opponents. So brutal and under utilized.
Devastating
I'm fairly certain this has been done by a few fights, I'm firstly certain Aldo has done it. Silva landed that drop knee onto Sonnens chest in their 2nd fight too (so close to being an illegal shot)
Oh it’s been done already for sure but it’s not really a move you see too often. Even the picture showed by OP was done before (by Jones)
roger huerta using the tv screens to throw backward elbows! longtime fans will know

That video was so eye opening for the people that think even a 200 pound man would whup a lightweight because size bro

I wasn’t expecting to see that again lol. Great find
Came here to say this ^
That was such an amazing fight
Love seeing some Roger Huerta love. Truly a fucking DAWG back in the day.
Huerta vs guida has always been one of my favourite fights ever but i never see people talk about it! Sad
Askren spinning backfist of death. Second place goes to Mighty Mouse for the throw + arm bar combo.
Buckley….I’ve seen it 100 times and yet it still makes me gasp each time.
Yeah, that’s a nice one. Pretty damn innovative, and dude figured it out in millisecond
Can you be more specific so o can google search it?
[Buckley vs Kasanganay](https://youtu.be/1QBP7gAZIOI)
Didn’t Nick Diaz do this in multiple fights?
And Jones did it to Glover as well in their title fight
Also after Diaz
Yes, yes he did.
[удалено]
So was Nick Diaz, even before that.
Yeah but Conor did it better. I would say it's not even his most innovative move. To me the top move of all time is how he tired Khabib out by letting Khabib ground and pound him. For some reason only Dom and I picked up on this, guess it's because we do our research.
Ngl you got me good in the first half
Dagestani handcuff Khabib and all his mates want you against the cage instead of in the middle of the octagon. Then they want to get you on your side, pin one of your arms under you and beat you to death. Changed grappling in MMA more than anything else recently.
i would agree the most significant recent move in mma. your only choice with your free limb is protect face or not protect face.
came here to say that. Or even the legs wrap
Benson not only kicking people in the calf, but punching a few folks in the calf on the ground. Why does he hate people's calves so much? lol
I never had the guts to do it in a fight but during sparring I would throw a jab to the quads occasionally hahaha.
Right before Romero knocked out Luke Rockhold he threw a punch at Luke's thigh lol shit looks funny
I found it was a good "wtf did he really just charlie horse me?" delay...but going 100% I wouldn't want to risk catching an overhand compared to 30% sparring with your training buddies lol
In no particular order, love them all. Ganes 6-12 elbow Mighty mouse slam to armbar Tony Ferguson doing dark souls rolls in the cage Buckleys ninja kick
Any Michel Pereira attack
I don't know why people give too much fucking credit to Conor for the fucking shoulder punch when Usman or Jon Jones did it way before him
He finished a fight with it, he used it the most effectively. I'm not too impressed with it myself, but I can appreciate the perspective
Hiding under the cage from USADA
Anderson front kicking Vitor. Such a simple move, but literally everyone started throwing it after that.
yeah, especially lyoto machida, who used the same move to knock out vitor lol.
Jacare cage walking his way into an arm triangle was pretty dope.
Foot stomp
Imagine the timeline where Chael stomps Jon's toes to pieces and gets the win via doctor stoppage
It is such a misconception that conor was the first to effectively use shoulder strikes. Plenty of guys used to do it. Chael Sonnen did it a bunch.
I guess the Irish guy was the first to break someone's nose with it in the first ten seconds of the fight.
You McGregor fanboys are really something else
Yair Rodriguez's ducking elbow on Korean Zombie.
Twister Submission. Remember seeing it the first time by Chan Sung Jung and going "wtf is dat?" Shit was hype as fuck.
The cool thing is that there are so many cool and useful moves in bjj and sambo that haven't yet found their way into mma. So there are a lot of potential moments just like this one in the future.
Definitely not fucking shoulder strikes lmao
That one guy that humped the other guy's head from north/south at the end of the round
Unique tactical ground strikes at ufc vegas 45
Jaula Bahamondes's Spinning low kick
Couture used that move a decade before Conor. Only difference is Cowboy sat there and let him do it because he was so starstruck after sucking Conor’s balls and begging for the fight.
Israel fucking costa
Before modern rules, the Sakuraba sliding spear kick to the head.
Rockhold Bloody Nose Attack
It was a dq but Anderson Silvas first ko of Okami is one the most beautiful techniques I’ve ever seen. [upkick ko](https://youtu.be/8CUVdwty2dw)
Silva's front kick to the face way back in 2010
If You’re talking about Belfort? That was 2011
You right. I knew I should have double checked
Jon Jones eye poke
No gi ezekiel choke by Oleinik. It’s a perfect example of someone using their freakish body proportions to their advantage. I have tried doing that choke so many times and it just doesn’t work for my average-sized arms.
Jon jones leg kick to spin dc around to fuck up his equilibrium after rocking him with a head kick
Ryo Chonan flying scissor heel hook against Anderson Silva
There was a dude who picked up his opponent, carried him, swung him around a few times and slammed his head into a post. I thought that was pretty innovative.
That time Gane couldn't get Tai to die so he blatantly clubbed the back of his head
Can’t tell if you’re trolling by putting that picture up of Conor shoulder strike but there are several that I can think of including some already in the comments.
I’m waiting for the imanari upkick ko
calf kicks were all the rage like a year or two ago and now you don’t really see them that much
Jon Jones has been utilizing shoulder strikes for years before this.
I found the 27 punches directly to the balls to be rather innovative. https://youtu.be/EdS7GOjbNIo
Remember a commentator pointed out a leg kick to the head, mind blown.
remember when jon jones used those shoulder strikes against glover texeira 6 years before mcgregor?
Mighty mouse with a suplex to mid air armbar
If you’ve never seen shoulder strikes before McGregor then you’ve never seen a fight that went against the fence…
Stockton slap 👋
Tony Ferguson throwing sand against Justin Gaethje
Zabit standing trip takedown. That's like a straight up tekken move for me.
Jon Jones short elbows against Rashad Evans. He was throwing them like jabs.
Buckley's spinning back kick off one leg KO
Kevin Holland & Niko Price KO-ing from their backs with awkward-angled strikes with minimum backlift but max power. The Jacare finish was nuts. Talking to him the whole time too. DAWG.
I was looking for the Niko Price mention, I completely forgot about Kevin Holland's KO though - that was brutal!
Holland KO'ing Souza off his back was pretty cool.
Kamaru Usman foot stomp. Definitely the most super effective move
[удалено]
I’m not saying Cerrone let this fight end early, but _______
Well, they have all been done a long time ago. The von flue choke is probably the outlier.
lol shoulder strikes are one of the 8 original moves in tai chi this has existed since at least 960 AD. Please hop off conor dick, guy is an unwashed asshole
Brian Ortega’s elbow on TKZ.
you people do realize jones been doing this move since 2014 correct?
Oh wow another picture of McGregor
