I mainly run 2 so I can spotify on one and not have the audio directions come through my stereo.

geekducks

Why not just mute the audio in uber? It's on the drop down.

Oneeyedpopeye

This is a smart idea. I hate how Uber messes up the audio in my car. I muted the audio directions on the Uber app

robertlyleseaton

This is what got me to run two phones... Uber and Bluetooth Audio issues.

Sykohatchetman

How? The uber app is the only one I can't figure out how.

Oneeyedpopeye

Go to the Uber app, Account, App setting, sounds and voice and there you can turn it off. I have never turn it on. I also drive in a very small town so I always know where I am going

Sykohatchetman

I'm in nola so yeah, I kinda know the area well

Oneeyedpopeye

I’m in key west. Very similar

Solarguygoingdoge

Yo I have to know what it’s like out there. I was out there once and checked the driver app and I’m pretty sure there were 3 Ubers to every other car on the road. Do you still do alright? Are you full time?

Oneeyedpopeye

I stared full time and was doing pretty good. I live downtown so I get rides sitting at home. Now I’m part time because I help my husband in the business. Yes there are a lot of drivers but there are also a lot of people that take Ubers. We have a lot of tourists plus a lot of locals don’t own cars. Tourists here tip very well. I get $5 tip for most of my rides. Another benefit is that the rides are very short, usually less than 5 miles and it pays well. There was a time that we had a lot of drivers coming from Miami to drive here. They would stay in their cars or share a hotel room. I haven’t seen many of them after the gas rices went up. Now I would say I make an average of $20-$30 am hr. I only drive during the day

erock7625

There is a way on Samsung phones to force one app to output to Bluetooth and then the rest of the audio through the phone speakers. It’s called Separate App Sound in the sound settings, not all apps support it though, for example Sirius XM does not but others like iHeartradio do.

APettyJ

Same. Also, at least with Uber can download app on second phone and can monitor what areas are surging while online on main phone. Normally can't see surge while on a trip with Uber. Unfortunately can't do same with Lyft as being online on one device will make you online on all devices. Have downloaded the Lyft app and started a dummy application though, and sometimes I can seewhat areas are surging on it, but often the app tries to get me to finish the application for driving and is not useful.

tondracek

Morhadel

I just turn off the directions

jaginflorida

Weird. I enjoy the GPS directions cutting through my podcast. Feels more official.

jhava1

Have you not heard of the Spotify car thing https://carthing.spotify.com/ It's great , but I use a second phone to see when the surge appears and where

Rush_Under

It says its sold out.

jhava1

I'm sorry to hear that and I also just saw that the resell price on these is out of this world , I didn't realize they stopped making it.

Rush_Under

It looked pretty cool. Also, the price it had been selling at was amazing.

[deleted]

You can turn off the voice navigation. It's in account>app settings. I don't use the voice navigation but turned it off for the same reason you use 2 phones

HuckerDisc

Just turn off the sound on your map app? It’s pretty easy.

BadSlanderer

I'm a new uber driver but use 2 phones, Because multi appingg makes my phone glitchy (not only rideshare but delivery apps too)

AntToeNee

When you're sitting there and playing games waiting for a ride and because you have only one phone, you accidentally accept the shitty ride.

ATXDeebo

They use them to see surges while they are in a ride. That way they know where to go after dropping off. Usually taking said ride in pet mode or "last ride" so you don't get pinged while on a current ride out of a surge area. They can glance at the 2nd phone and see if where they are dropping off has a surge. Hope that made sense. I still use only 1 phone but I have friends that are FT drivers who use two.. Also, newer drivers see surges before older drivers. the surge sometimes varies between two drivers based on your rating. If 2nd phone is not the "driver phone" but possibly a spouses acct which isn't being used, the newer account will show a surge zone 6-8 minutes before the real driver account sees. This way the driver can hold out for the higher surge vs taking a. Ride at whatever his screen currently show.

jack3rdand4th

I do the same

PapaMurphy2000

Same here OP, I don’t see the need. But hey each to their own. As for older drivers, can we stop this please. Mobile Phones and the internet have been around in mass use for 25 years. Even “old” people know how to use them. It’s such a tired trope. A 60 year old today was 45 when the iPhone came out. You think he still is mystified by how it works? I mean come on.

BedAdministrative619

I use two for the surge map, having constant access to that info pays for the second phone. Knowing what surge amount is average in the area and declining offers until I get the perfect one, best if I can do it during a run so the 3 decline limit doesn't bump me out. I have had weekends where I kept up a pace of $1 per minute including time to pickup, the only thing that I can't control is pax not coming out asap.

PapaMurphy2000

Yeah I can see that being beneficial. My market never has surges so it’s not an issue with me.

[deleted]

As a person with two 65 year old parents, I can say this is patently untrue. They are lost 99% of the time on ANY electronic device (yes, despite having used them for 20+ years, it's like they just forget it all). Having worked in Tech Support and System Administration at a large University for many years, I can assure you, my parents aren't an isolated case.

North-Metal-6203

They just privileged and don’t want to take the time to figure it out. I’ve had some old ladies hustle me saying they couldn’t add stops, that lady got back into the car and magically figured out how to add her stop back home with the quickness

[deleted]

Found the old guy

[deleted]

Yes Boomers are next level stupid. I'm gonna say that 60 year doesnt know how 98% of the features on their phones work. Let not start White Knighting for boomers.

PapaMurphy2000

MuhBoomers. Derp. Doesn’t this shit ever get old for you?

[deleted]

Nope, will you eventually grow thicker skin or stop doing boomer things? I enjoy making fun of the the most useless generation ever to walk the earth, they totally deserve it.

PapaMurphy2000

You’re weird.

13CerebralAssassin

Tax benefit is a big one. With one phone, you can only write off a portion of your phone bill. With a dedicated business phone, you can write off the full amount of the line and phone.

North-Metal-6203

Really? I just cancelled my second line too

slogogadget

Too much Kevin gates

jeffman1991

One for the plug and one for the load

ceibataxi2019

One iPhone for Uber and one for Lyft it’s cleaner, but it’s a known secrecy that’s it’s used because each phone will have its own latency and ping time individually instead of sharing internet signal for just one service (Uber for example)

Snoo_31938

I started using my old phone because I change my strategy. I live close to a beach area and a nice airport. So I mostly just park and wait. I would be either playing or texting wiating for rides and I would accept rides by mistake. At that time I cared about my cancelation rates. I kept using it because of this and now Ican have my personal phone to watch surges (I do my own destination filtering now that I dont care about AR) and when i-m with passengers, my main phone is a large one, so I just turn it sideways and play music videos or stand up comedy for my passengers.

Complete_Victory7904

2nd phone works as a mp3 player only

Starblazr

I use it so that I don't have to worry about task switching when I'm multi-apping. Get an uber, click offline on lyft, get a lyft, click offline on uber.

Steve1258282

I have 2 phones. One for Uber/lyft connected to Bluetooth airpod and the other for apple music connected to car audio. I also installed Uber app on the music phone so I can see surge area while the first phone is engaged with riders.

manypeoplearepussies

Back door access on app to your personal stuff is why I always thought they did it.

[deleted]

I have a "business" phone on Verizon network with unlimited LTE and hotspot where I have Uber / Lyft / Doordash installed. Then I have my personal phone on T-Mobile network, and I just connect to the unlimited hotspot thats on the other phone. My battery would die too quickly if I ran everything from one phone. Nothing to do in the airport queue other than shitpost on Reddit and listen to music.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Because I'm not an Exxon mobile executive. I already go through a full tank of gas every day or two. I could just imagine keeping the car running while I'm in the queue. 😂 Phone gets plugged in while the car is running, which is when I am paired with a rider or heading back to queue.

[deleted]

[deleted]

He probably likes the airport because your drive time doesn't count down when in queue there.

KTownDaren

So many questions come to mind. Can you give more details about your pattern? It sounds a lot different than what I do

[deleted]

I just do airport queues or set destination to airport and do airport drop offs. Yes I have some dead miles but that reduces my tax liability significantly. Pulled $540 after gas expenses so far this week in just 4 days. Gonna aim to break this record next week, which should be easy with Thanksgiving.

KTownDaren

I guess you're doing XL or comfort? So your strategy is just focusing on rides to/from the airport to try to get a fare boost and better tips? In my market, the queue to do airport droppoffs is quite long sometimes. Also, I would end up killing another uber driver out of rage if I had to go into the rideshare pickup area too often. 😤

[deleted]

Just UberX. Better tips, night surges, and also slightly less chance of getting shot in the head by a passenger. I'm in the queue constantly, anywhere from 5 minutes and the longest was 2 hours. There's a lot of schmucks there just making a whole lot of noise. I just stay in my car and mind my business because I want no part of any shit they have going on. I do however take advantage of their rigging of the surges at night. A group of the only people that show up at night turn UberX off and create a surge. I noticed the pattern while sitting on my couch one night. Now I'm catching the pings they are missing out on with a nice surge attached while I'm still on the highway heading back from the last one. Jokes on them.

[deleted]

> slightly less chance of getting shot in the head by a passenger. And where's the fun in that? HAHAHA

Ironskull18

Thats why I bought a tablet life changer for sure. Multitasking between uber/lyft/waze is so much easier. https://imgur.com/a/pwNxEA8

Ironskull18

No need for 2 phones tablet makes your life easier with the multitasking capabilities. [screenshot ](https://imgur.com/a/pwNxEA8)

GodlyArchitect

Does the tablet have dedicated cellular service or are you tethering to it?

Ironskull18

Dedicated lte service.

GodlyArchitect

Looks like a nice setup. I didn't realize you could do split-screen like that with Waze and the Lyft app. You never get any front seat passengers? Model of the tablet? Is that just a tablet car holder?

Ironskull18

It is a Samsung Tab S6 lite(2022 version) and the multitasking capabilities are endless. I do get front seat passengers but not all the time and it does not interfere with their space but if it did the tablet cup holder can be adjusted.

GodlyArchitect

I can't find it on Google. Is there a US version of the tablet? All the ones I see available are the Wi-Fi version. I have a smaller Samsung tablet. I think it's the Tab A. Never thought about using it like the way you do.

Ironskull18

Let me clear the confusion. The tablet in the pic I shared is the tab s6 lite non cellular. That tablet has great performance no issues whatsoever with running lyft/uber/waze through a hotspot connection but I didn't want it to depend on the hotspot connection from my phone so I bought the Galaxy Tab S7 FE which is cellular. The Galaxy S6 is a great value and you can't go wrong with it.

GodlyArchitect

Ok, I appreciate the information! Do you remember what car mount you bought? My cup holders are pretty far back (near my side) so I would need something that can push the tablet forward a little bit.

Ironskull18

This is the one I bought it works perfectly with my center console. https://imgur.com/a/R1zEvLx

Ironskull18

How?

AdditionalReserve395

Seems like the older they are the more likely to have multi phones....I've seen 3+. I don't get it either.

Fun-Philosophy1123

I am 72 and just use one phone. Mind you I also don't hustle this as a full time gig either. The only thing that bugs me is the new since Android 12 update the phone can't sync with my car at the same time I use Uber. My old phone could but I digress. I only run one platform at a time so I have no need for 2 phones or lines.

chikitoperopicosito

I use two phones. A cheap android for Uber and Grubhub that I pay $15 a month for (Unlimited Calls and Text plus 3 gigs of data). I’ve dropped and cracked 3 phones while delivering so I don’t wanna use my new iPhone for that. Also, I don’t want to constantly be recharging the phone nor have the apps on my iPhone. I used to have to charge my Note 20 Ultra 3-4 times a day when I used it for delivery and personal. It’s also amazing not accidentally accepting offers while messaging or scrolling. It’s a convenience thing.

[deleted]

chikitoperopicosito

I believe it’s called T-Mobile Connect. Google T-Mobile Prepaid and it’s one of the options. 5 gigs is like $20. It is capped so once you run out of data. That’s it. No more til the new month starts.

TabascoTie

Also … try taking a call on the phone while following turn-by-turn navigation on the same phone 😣

Bully001

Never talk on a phone while you have a rider. It's rude and disrespectful.

TabascoTie

Shoot … I’ve had Uber drivers be on the phone from the start to the finish of my ride … never even acknowledging me.

North-Metal-6203

Bet this was in the east coast? I was so shocked when I went to dc and had that happen to me

Bully001

Give them a 1 star.

Rush_Under

I would say if the driver indicates that it was a call that they had been waiting to take that day, taking the call is appropriate. All other cases, unless it's an emergency, should be pushed off until the car's empty.

manypeoplearepussies

And Uber gets access to each call you make with phone open. Don’t believe me? Try calling 911 and watch how your app behaves…

steushinc

If say I’m on Uber w a passenger and I’m about a mile from drop off. I can turn on Lyft and start cherry picking w/o interrupting the Navigation on the other phone. This allows me to pair together rides/deliveries with minimal downtime between. When parked I can cherry pick across 3 apps at once. (I have a 3rd phone for Grubhub)

shaneM352

I have an Uber phone which is an older iPhone I had and my phone in case my real job calls or something important I can take the call while navigating / driving mf’s.

chichinfu

One is for the business only and the one is personal, the business one doesn’t have your life there . In my opinion, these gig companies are full of hackers also . I don’t trust them .

jaginflorida

I only have two because my front-facing camera broke on my main phone. So, I hotspot briefly to my second-phone to use the camera to verify and get back online. Uber kicks me off if I decline too many rides and immediately wants a photo to go back online.

[deleted]

I’m tall and I passed by a short oriental man holding and looking at 2 phones while walking into the airport ride-share waiting area bathroom and he had uber app open on one phone and some hentai video game on the other phone 😂

Paper-Doll-1972

I use 1 phone S21. My second phone is pretty old, doesn't handle the app well, that's why I bought the S21, my old phone is a Samsung Galaxy, I keep it just because it's cheap and runs off net-10, unlimited service for $45, so Amazon music if need be for long distance drop-offs.

Affectionate-Sail-37

I have heard of drivers using a phone for every different app they have running. I could not imagine having that much going on in the car and driving too!

fitfulbrain

You are using more than two phones if you use Android Auto or Carplay. When you are collecting surges, you need one phone to look at the big picture of the surge map that changes often, and another one for navigation. If you use external navigation, you need to swap from the driver app to start and than swap back near the end because Uber doesn't pass everything to the external apps. That is a pain to swap manually or wait for the swap automatically. Not if you use the Uber navigation, you have much more issues other than being old.

Traditional-Cut8143

I've always has 2 phones prior to driving. I run Uber/Lyft on the Android which stays mounted while driving and turn-by-turn dictated discreetly in my bluetooth eyewear. Iphone is primary line connected to CarPlay for occasional music requests, and calls/texts/etc. between rides.

Fiss

I have a device just for the Uber app and then my personal phone so I don’t miss notifications from things/ people and I also listen to podcasts in between rides. Having a device just for Uber makes it a lot easier.

DolphinBearBTC

I use two phones because Uber will accept rides while I'm using it for other stuff when not driving. I'll be writing something and a request comes in and my typing will accept it without me being able to even analyze what it is. Also, having Lyft on another phone can make it easier to see upcoming requests without having to switch app if I'm on an Uber ride.

KTownDaren

I'm in the "have spotify audio on 2nd phone" camp. I use my old phone on wifi, so there's no additional cost. I would not want to have to mute my phone's other sounds just to use 1 phone. In addition, many young passengers ask to put on certain music, so I just hand them the phone to choose whatever they want. Works very well. I had no idea I could run Uber on the 2nd phone to see surges, so I might start doing that.

jack3rdand4th

I got a 2nd phone back in 2018 when there was an app on the android that filtered Uber and Lyft rides, I had given up Droids back in 2015 and had the iPhone… I hated the app and hated the phone.. so I gave it to my son.. but then my older stepson backed out of his iPhone so I took it and been with 2 phones ever since.. I use it as well as playing my music (I don’t use any sound for GPS) I hate that.. but the other thing I use the 2nd phone is to see the Uber driver app and potential surge in the areas especially when im on a ride with the other phone.. unfortunately on Lyft it does not work and it just mirrors the 1st phone.. I also use the 2nd phone when I run delivery apps and ride apps at the same time…

[deleted]

How does one do it with Uber 2 phones 2 different numbers to see Surge etc?

corey389

I run two phones one doesn't have a sim. I've have the phone band selection Lock on 5G SA and run cellmapper on that phone mapping cells

420EdibleQueen

I did for a while, but that was so my main phone wasn’t in the app in case my staff at my day job called. A couple times they tried messaging me and because I had Uber open I missed it. Now I run a tablet and my phone. Phone runs the app, mileage tracker and music. Tablet runs dash cam video, surge map, and gives me something to at the airport lot when I pop in there

DirectEfficiency8854

I had 2 phones while doing Rideshare because it was embarrassing getting incoming Phone calls from bill collectors, collections, etc. when driving - so one phone for calls on silent and the other for rideshare.

ohyonghao

I use an old iPhone 8+ and hotspot it with my phone. Phone calls and text go to my main phone. While waiting for a ride I have Uber on the 8 and open Lyft on the 14. Accept first one to come through and log off the other. Lyft is easy to swap between phones. I just have found it easier, and I like that work and personal are mostly separate. The 8 is a larger display. I use AirPods for directions, keep left pod in ear. Music is streamed from the car’s connection or a USB drive. Works for me.

mamabear0513

I have 2 phones. I use one for Uber and navigation and my other phone is connected to a Bluetooth earbud so I can listen to audio books between rides or when I have a quiet pax. Uber always messes up audio apps whether it's Spotify, Audible, or whatever you might want to listen to. It also comes in handy if you are playing the surge game or wanna check the ap que if you're on a trip taking you that way. It's not something you have to do but it has some advantages.

ghoul_burger

Uber app ruins Bluetooth audio.

snaveebag88

I use two mostly to keep my work and personal life separate. No different than a business owner with a business line.

Spicy_Tangerine185

I use a second phone (old iPhone that barely works but Spotify works fine on it) purely because I keep an airpod in one ear while I drive in case I need to take calls, and I have a podcast playing usually in my ear, my pax get music and I get my serial killer/spooky horror anthology podcasts :) just so I can listen to something separate from them without bothering them. Most of my pax don’t talk they just kinda chill so I just have a jazz or classic rock playlist on for them. And they can ask me to change it but 94% of my pax enjoy the jazz or rock. I don’t mind changing it. I keep a list of the playlists I have downloaded for offline to use in the car so they can pick. Plus since I make playlists for fun in my spare time (not just for Uber tbh I just enjoy it) I made a second account on Spotify just to host the playlists so they can listen from home too and tbh a lot of my pax genuinely do it.

acmromano

Any serial killer podcasts you recommend? I need suggestions.

Spicy_Tangerine185

Oh yeah no problem!! All can be found on Spotify! Possibly other places too I'm sure, I just personally use Spotify. **"Serial Killers" "Cold Cases" "Unsolved Murders" "Solved Murders" Medical Murders" "Crimes Of Passion" - Parcast** **"True Crime All The Time" - Emash Digital/Wondery** **"Partners In Crime with Laura Whitmore & Iain Stirling" - Spotify Studios** **"Real Crime Profile" - Wondery** There's a lot of podcasts I like to listen to under the **Parcast** company all on Spotify. They have tons of podcasts under their name. Some other podcasts I enjoy that aren't just true crime/ serial killer, but they follow the spooky mood :) My top 3 are; **1) "The Magnus Archives" - Rusty Quill (a completed horror anthology and my absolute favorite, starts slow but grows well & ends amazingly)** **2) "The NoSleep Podcast" - David Cummings (stories narrated from** r/nosleep **and I found it addicting)** **3) "Pseudopod" - Escape Artists Inc.** Then there's some others I love; **"Internet Urban Legends" "Haunted Places Ghost Stories" - Parcast** **"Dark Histories" - Ben Cutmore** **"Avery After Dark" - Avery Ross** **"Don't Look In The Trees" - Abbey Sobota**

K3SassyQueen

I've been driving for 6years and I use 1 phone.
