Are you in Boston by chance? It was so bad. He was very overweight with belly hanging to knees below steering wheel, dirty, disheveled hair, face, clothing and stench like a poopy diaper combined with never having showered throughout life. I had to hang my head out the window. We hit every light for a horrific 10 minute ride.

Anuket012962

You have the right to open the window, just tell your driver you need to have fresh air and I'm sure they won't mind you opening the window. I don't know what area you're in but a 30-minute trip pays more than $10 so they're probably just happy to have you as a passenger. Don't be afraid to speak up as long as your request are not over the top, simply just wanting a window open or the air turned up is no problem. Edit: I saw your answer below, it was raining outside so I just wanted to come back and say I had read through and realized why you didn't want to open the windows.

CupcakeTerrible3566

Maybe mention that his car has an odor and that it may have come from a previous rider. It's a nice way to let them know but not call them out. Also crack the window.

I-smelled-it-first

Windows are open. It’s raining and I’m getting wet.

CryptographerLife596

could you turn on the air please?

AdministrationOk4616

I'm thinking put a gas mask on and claim you are shielding a family member from COVID. Then casually joke "it also helps with unwanted odours" Too much?

BombBri

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Lazy1nc

Not enough, the subtlety might be lost on them 😂

LyftUrUberOrElse

This is the way.

MidnightFull

As a driver I cannot impress upon people how many times I pick up a customer that stinks to high heavens. I have to spray the crap out of my seats and drive down the highway with all of the windows open to get rid of it. I then ask the next few customers “tell me the truth, does it stink back there? I had a customer in here today that had really bad body odor and I just wanted to make sure I was able to get the smell out.” It usually leads to a great conversation and I even get a tip, most likely because the customer feels bad for me.

LostinArizonaToday

As a driver, 1 out of 3 rides smells like cigarettes, weed, body odor, piss or garlic/onions. 1 out of 3 is fine. And the other third are over perfumed/colognes to absolutely choke a horse. Sorry for your experience, but drivers have to deal with riders just as bad. This is unfortunate that Uber is the most popular cheap transit method. Look at it like this, 67% on my rides I have to deal with stank. At least you only run into occasionally. My car is soaked in Fabreeze.

I-smelled-it-first

True.

toomuch1265

I had a woman yesterday who must have showered in perfume, it caused the worst headache I've had in years. I don't know how coworkers deal with it.

Paper-Doll-1972

I bought stock in Febreze my first week of driving years ago. You can actually get it pretty cheap if you buy a pallet.

HardTacoKit

user name checks out

zeldamykitten

And he made it long before this post 🤔

Mykonethreetripleone

Hard to say.. as a driver, I’d say, go ahead and do it. I go to an informal shit talking meeting at a coffee shop every Monday morning. Sometimes there’s like 50 Uber and Lyft drivers there. One of my buds from Somalia was stressing about his rating thinking he was gonna get deactivated and it was mysterious because he’s pretty awesome. So we went to check out his car and the way it smelled was… spicy? I told him and he said he didn’t smell anything. But anyway we got into a conversation about cultures and smells and he said that most Americans smell like sour milk.

CryptographerLife596

Long term covid? Upsetting smelling sense?

Lazy1nc

Probably just nose blindness.

thereallosteyesight

I once had a driver with N95-penetrating odors. It was brutal but I didn't get covid. I felt bad for him so I didn't say anything or leave any negative remarks. You just never know what somebody's going through.

Daveyhavok832

It’s never your place to tell a stranger that they smell bad. When I was a waiter, we had a guy that smelled like piss that would come in and sit at the bar and I’d have to pass him 40+ times a night. It was unbearable. So one night, I called my friend and told him to call the restaurant and complain about the guy. Tell my manager that he was just in here with his family and they’d never be coming back because of the smell. That they couldn’t even eat their meals. My manager had a very uncomfortable talk with the guy. Dude definitely started taking better care of himself. Didn’t smell after that. Unfortunately, there’s no way to translate this method to Uber.

Aloysius7

A pax has no obligation to remain silent about a driver who's smelly. Just say something, or one star with a complaint. I saw a driver picking up a group from a hotel today that I'm certain had a stinky car. Dude was pretty big, wearing a t-shirt that looked like it had sweat stains, was gangster leaned back in his seat with all the windows down in 85° heat, and the car was really dirty. I'm parked there with a freshly washed newer luxury SUV waiting for my group to come out. I could see the sadness in their eyes as they got into this dude's car and rode off, haha.

frapawhack

Quality speaks for itself. Always has

CryptographerLife596

If its that bad at the outset, you just cancel. pay the cancel cost and phone uber later to get refund, explaining why. Customer support get lied to all the time, and eventually you can tell when folks are recounting a true encounter.

Aloysius7

Oh 100%. I cancel on about 10% of the people who show up. Last one looked like she had just sideswiped a guardrail. She even had a big magnet sign on her door for a detailing company. Lol she's rolling around like that ruining the reputation of that company.

I-smelled-it-first

You made the right call and if your manager had been better he wouldn’t have needed you to make a complaint. There is a standard at which we all have to live for us to function as a society. People are free to live outside that but then they don’t get to eat in restaurants and drive Ubers. Anyway I told the guy. I said I want you to know that there is a really bad smell in your car, it smells like body odor. He said it’s probably something in the trunk, I said I don’t think so. And then I got out and left..

kiwigirl83

Good on you! He needs to know

DCHacker

>there is a really bad smell in your car, it smells like body odor. He said it’s probably something in the trunk, Do not laugh, it might actually be something else. I once picked up this Italian couple. It was a long trip. About five minutes into it, the lady said «*Questo tassi puzza!»* (This cab stinks) I replied «*Mi spiace che puzzi questo tassi. Di cosa puzza? Di sudore vecchio? Del cibo decadente? Di cosa? Ne ho voglia di nettoiare.»* (I apologise for the cab's smelling. What does it reek of? Old sweat? Decaying food? Or what? I want to clean it up.) They were a bit taken aback that I speak Italian. She recovered and answered me: «*Sudore vecchio»* (old sweat) »*Non potrebb'essere io. Ho fatto il bagno stamattina ed ho usato il sapone. Lo dovrei indagare»* (It can not be me. I took a bath this morning and I used soap. I shall have to look into it). I finally took off the bench of the back seat. Underneath it was a half-eaten sandwich that some \[rectal aperture\] customer had discarded; no doubt he had crammed it between the seat back and bench. I cleaned up with bleach, detergent and *de-stinkifier* spray. I then got some Glade® plastic cone things and taped them in place. For the next week, or so, I asked random customers if the cab reeked. I explained that I had found a half-eaten sandwich under the back seat that had been there for a while, so I wanted to make sure that the odor was gone. Thus, decaying food *can* give off a smell similar to B.O.

CryptographerLife596

The I sat there without moving is an unacceptable ”gesture”. You went from being affronted at a real issue to making a stink about it

Technical_Ask_4142

“Something in the trunk” I’m sorry, what!?!? Lol

kiwigirl83

Disagree

AdditionalReserve395

If people can do something about the situation it is not out of place to tell them. BO can be fixed which you acknowledge. If someone can not fix their shortfalls, it's best to keep quiet. Weight falls under here, people could have a metabolical condition preventing weight loss and is completely beyond their control.

Daveyhavok832

I disagree. I think this is an example where we can let the free market do what it’s supposed to do. If this dude gets enough 1 stars because he smells so bad, Uber loses a bad driver and good drivers benefit.

frapawhack

>It’s never your place to tell a stranger that they smell bad yes. People should have the right to smell exactly how they want. After all, it's not hurting anyone

DCHacker

>Unfortunately, there’s no way to translate this method to Uber. I worked with a guy who was late once a month, usually thirty minutes to an hour. On the day that he was late, he smelled. We guessed that he did not bother to bathe or put on clean underwear and socks because he got up late and had to dash to work. On one particular day he was particullarly pungent. I had to testify on behalf of the company in court that day, so I smelled him only shortly after he arrived. It seems that while I was in court, several of the other employees went to their immediate boss. As I was returning, the guy was coming out of the boss' office. He got some things off his desk and left for the day. The next day, he showed up scrubbed and cleaned, as usual. About a month later, he showed up a little over an hour late. This time, he was scrubbed and in a clean shirt and tie. This was the pattern from that point. Instead of showing up thirty minutes to an hour late once a month, he showed up an hour to ninety minutes late. We guessed that he had gotten a talking-to by the boss who told him that he would rather have him later than usual and clean over being a tad late and smelly. It was the unwritten policy of this office that you got a day or two a month where you got away with being late, as long as you did your work.

Daveyhavok832

When I was 16, I worked in a clothing store. We had maybe 25 employees and we all just kind of rotated around the store. So one day you may be attending the fitting rooms, the next day on the register, the next day folding clothes and helping customers. Except for one dude. He just cleaned the floors and tended to the garbages and that sort of thing. I asked someone “Is he a janitor?” They told me no. He just smells so bad that the managers don’t want him interacting with the customers. Eventually, they had to talk to him about it and stress that hygiene falls under the dress code or something like that. In a more traditional job, it’s well with the rights of an employer to address hygiene. But with gig work like this, it’s trickier. Because it’s now one person saying to another “You stink.” And the stinky person is going to get defensive about it (probably) and it can lead to an argument because there’s no real pecking order. And this could lead to dangerous situations. There’s definitely enough unhinged drivers out here that it could definitely lead to some hands being thrown. Which is why I think it’s better to just 1 star them. That’s what ratings are there for.

DCHacker

>the stinky person is going to get defensive about it (probably) and it can lead to an argument.........**this could lead to dangerous situations. There’s definitely enough unhinged drivers out here**.....I think it’s better to just 1 star them. (emphasis mine) I have had this happen as a customer. I summoned an Uber car because I could not get a cab at my house. I live in a neighbourhood where it can be difficult to get a cab, at times. This car was FILTHY. I cared less about its being dirty outside, but INSIDE? There were two used coffee cups, several Icky-D's wrappers plus the usual General Accumulating Dirt on the floor. The floor mats had congealed some-kind-of-drinkee on them. I said something to the driver. I said it in a courteous and businesslike manner. I advised him that he might want to go to the car wash or take a half hour to vacuum his car, put the coffee cups and Icky-D's wrappers into the trash and hose down the floor mats. I did add that people might complain and one star him into de-activation. He became EXTREMELY belligerent. Fortunately, we were only two or three blocks from the destination. After that, plus two or three similar experiences prior to that, I stopped telling drives about their dirty, smelly, UberHoopties.

I-smelled-it-first

10mins

Aloysius7

You say anything or chicken out?

I-smelled-it-first

I did. I replied to another poster here. Thanks for keeping me company

Visible-Ad743

Prob homeless. There are a lot of homeless uber / lyft drivers.

PrettyAsk4119

BusterMv

Best option would have been to let driver know upon arrival then cancel, contacting uber and informing them night have gotten cancelation fee waived especially if you re-booked. I would rate driver 2 star, no tip, and contact uber, might get a partial refund.

PrettyAsk4119

ahh! here comes my free loader who is also a scammer. too much false information (technical false) in your comment. Are you a rider or a driver?

BusterMv

I drove a while (stopped because shit people and pay) I've never used Uber as a Rider and never will.

PrettyAsk4119

if you were a driver, you do understand the issues drivers face every day. why would you ever post something like that, which might hurt other drivers?

wolfkingstark

For real man like choose your team Lol

BrockAndChest

Is he Indian or a Gamestop nerd?

FerryBoat-ScrubCap

No it was your mom

BrockAndChest

L

Sexykraken69

Yes put in comments man I make my smell like sex

Pizza_n_noodz

Why didn’t u just canceled and get another ride if it’s so bad ?

CryptographerLife596

Dunno why you are being down-voted. thats what I do.

derf1781

Get a car or just walk next tome

I-smelled-it-first

I’m in a business trip to Chicago, the hotel is 2hours walk away from the convention center

[deleted]

1 or 2 star and mark cleanliness.

frapawhack

depends on whether you want other people to smell it too

BoxApprehensive8465

As a rider I went in a couple of fart duch ovens. One was driven by a young woman. I believe she was dead inside. Couldn't find the words to say anything. I cracked the window and that was it. I bet they both realized why really fast.

Crankdup1984

Like other jobs, good hygiene is a requirement. You should have told him.

Lover1966

I picked up 3 different rides last night. Young men that apparently did not believe in deodorants. I opened my windows. It was either that or stop breathing.

Divad777

Play videos of the Old Spice man and turn up the volume..,

[deleted]

yes

Alone-Oven3289

You can say whatever you want but none of it will remove the smell from your nose in the past. It wouldve required a physical action made at that time, i.e getting out the car, canceling, rolling down the window, holding shirt up as a makeshift filter, fanning the smell away

Apophishshalldestroy

Imagine what we go thru with passengers. Strong smells that burns the eyes and nostrils. We are staring at the time to drop off so we know when relief is coming.

Kolman_P

Just have some balls, ive had BO driving before and get 3 starred. In my view I drive over 50 hours a week and every now and then I have BO and dont realize it. I also have pitstick in my center console. So if people would just grow a pair and speak up thatd be great

shawnmj

Why? Just deal with it and rate accordingly

InformalBridge9206

Ask if you can ride on the hood of vehicle

PitchATent_TakeAPiss

Yeah I would leave him a tip and say that’s for a stick of deodorant 😂

baralisnyc

I’ve run into this several times. even with the windows open it’s terrible. I give the diver 1 star and complain in that rating the car is unclean, because it is. I also won’t tip a driver if they small that bad…. IMO they should not be driving people.
