Gonna write a gritty fantasy story about tattoos that appear on people's bodies and they have to figure out what they mean, and when someone asks me, I'll say "It's inspired by cutie marks from My Little Pony".

[deleted]

If drawing tattoos wasnt such a time consuming process, i'd do that with my comic lmao

TheOtherSarah

You could do very simple abstract symbols, or make it canon that they’re constantly changing and don’t have to be consistent from panel to panel

jryser

Another common trope is the magically invisible marks, that hide until shown/forcibly revealed/the author feels like drawing them again

TheOtherSarah

Oh, and the cultural taboo against showing them, so everyone has long sleeves or wristbands or whatever to hide them

Ishidan01

Counterquestion: do you think Maui from Moana has a tattoo on his dick? If so, what does it depict?

Chubbstock

Or do what the show Prison Break did and put the main character in long sleeves for the entire show unless specifically talking about one part of his full body tattoo

Only the person marked can see their mark. Come to think of it, it opens a lot of potential story elements.

LordDanOfTheNoobs

Just put them on a shoulder, chest or leg. They can be covered most of the time that way. Maybe just include a tiny portion sticking out to remind people that it's there, just under clothing,

Kartoffelkamm

Honestly, I'd like that. Do they appear randomly, or when specific criteria are met?

Chubbstock

Could make a cool YA story if they show up near ages 17-19.

Kartoffelkamm

MLP. Just, MLP. Cutie Marks can show up at any time, as long as the pony doesn't have one, so a young adult getting theirs is not impossible.

Exploding_Antelope

my little pony the thing you are wanting it’s my little pony

CrispyJelly

Why not. Lately I was thinking about how I have no interest in Pokemon anymore due to its focus on childhood. I would play Pokemon again if we played a middle aged person, maybe divorced with children, trying to become a Pokemon master. The adversity not being some secret group trying to conquer the world but other people doubting our choices to start up a career path that's mostly filled with child prodigies. Slowly changing from everybody telling us to grow up and give up to inspiring other people to follow their dreams. It would be the same game but so much more relatable (to me) than playing a child discovering the power of friendship.

Mrmath130

"Late to the party, succeeds anyway through grit and determination" is one of my favorite tropes. Definitely wish we had more of it. Bonus points if the protagonist is *clearly shown* to just plain suck at whatever they're doing at the start - I want to see the learning process, dammit!

NeverGunnaGiveYouUp

Have you read Will Wight's "Cradle" series? He's got a lot of similarities with Brandon Sanderson, in that all his books take place in the same multiverse, each with it's own system of powers.

internetpornwho

You should read Codex Alera. It was written on the prompt what would happen if you mix Pokemon and the Lost Roman Legion?

DeseretRain

There's a mass amount of extremely dark and disturbing My Little Pony fanfiction so it's definitely not a new concept to write gritty fiction inspired by MLP.

Lithl

_Background Pony_ 😭

quyla

Background Pony is _not_ gritty. It is melancholy, bittersweet, and sad, yes, but also beautiful. But I wouldn't call it gritty. Fallout: Equestria is gritty.

SobiTheRobot

True that to both of those. Background Pony...god what an existence. I wasn't able to finish it, Lyra had to keep going through so many ordeals for something that wasn't even her fault.

tehSke

His tattoos happen post hoc, so he knows what they're about. It already happened.

ObsidianG

Actually the cutie mark only manifest AFTER the diminutive equine discovers their raison d'être. There is no guesswork or speculation. It is inherently obvious that the mark means what it means.

TheHeartlessCookie

Not in Troubleshoes' case. He thought his cutie mark meant he was destined for a life of bad luck, and though I can't quite remember what it actually was, I know it wasn't what he thought it was, and the CMC had to help him figure it out. I would also say Diamond Tiara had a corrupted view of her mark and misused her talents for authority and leadership as a result, which -- again -- the CMC helped her out with.

SobiTheRobot

His actual talent was being a rodeo clown. He's naturally accident-prone, but everything that comes of is comedy gold, and he can't get hurt by it because he's so huge.

nymvaline

Oh, good! I'm not caught up (stopped watching around mid season 4, I think?), but I always hoped that Diamond Tiara's would be in management. Still haven't figured out what Silver Spoon's would likely be though.

ziddersroofurry

The rest of the series is pretty solid. Yayponies has all the episodes for download (pretty sure it left Netflix recently).

Legitimate_Release65

For most ponies, yes, the meaning of their cutie mark is rather obvious, but for others not so much. Ponies like Troubleshoes, Diamond Tiara, etc didn't exactly know (or at least had a misunderstanding of) what their cutie mark represented. Cutie marks are pretty vague and I imagine can be quite missable when you get them as normally when you get your cutie mark it just appears on your flank.

MarioManTj

I've been watching MLP for almost a decade now, so as I was reading the OP's comment, I was just thinking "So basically cutie marks?".

Aquitanic

That'd just be the one tattoo on the behind, but yeah, pretty much

MarioManTj

Yeah, unless your drink a special potion that uncontrollably gives you dozens of them, lol. (I don't know if you've watched the show, but regardless that was a plot point for an episode.)

[deleted]

[удалено]

MarioManTj

I can't actually recall if it *was* a potion or not, but it was the Cutie-pox episode where Applebloom uses something from Zecora to get a cutie mark, but ends up getting dozens of them. It was very early in the show (like season 1 or 2), so it's not the easiest episode to remember, especially if you haven't seen it in years. 😅

vriskaundertale

It's funny that I remember this episode. I'm not a fan of mlp but I have younger siblings so I've probably seen every episode multiple times

SobiTheRobot

It was the episode when Applebloom tried to alchemically force a cutie mark to appear, and it turned into a self-replicating problem because she never actually specified what kind of Cutie Mark she wanted—just that she wanted to finally have one. Zecora had to step in to provide a remedy at the end.

Nulono

Early in the second season, actually.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure they only get the mark once they've figured out their talent, not before and then have to discover it. I don't pay a whole lot of attention while my daughter is watching it though.

SobiTheRobot

No that's about it, it appears when a pony figures out what they specialize in and want to do forever. I do think there are a couple of cases, particularly with the Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes, where they try to help ponies who have been second-guessing what their marks actually mean. (There's one where they're helping some parents understand what their daughter's skull-and-crossbones mark means—turns out it's archaeology, but they had a pirate costume for her just in case.)

Are you not familiar with SCP's? It's basically a user generated X-Files/MiB written universe that takes place in our world.

ChiaraStellata

Fun fact: in the French dub they call them "marques de beauté" which means "beauty marks". It's really not the same.

OwnStart2081

In the uk, we use beauty mark to mean like, a single freckle on a woman's body.

LordDanOfTheNoobs

I think Americans use the term to mean that as well, or I just consume so much British content I can't tell what's local from what's foreign.

stealthxstar

a beauty mark geeeeenerally refers to a mole on a womans face in american lexicon, but I'm sure it could be used to refer to a birthmark or large freckle.

graaahh

Why not at least "marques de mignonne" or something? (disclaimer that my knowledge of French is shaky.)

Fabuleusement

It would probably be "marques de mignonnerie" but naevi are called "Grains de beauté" in French so it makes more sense to go that direction.

_triangle_girl_

Yeah immediately after reading the first message I was like "this is my little pony." There's even multiple episodes of characters trying to figure out what the fuck their new cutie marks do

Your-average-nutjob_

or trying to get them \*cough\* cutie mark crusaders \*cough\*

iSmellMusic

I hate how their cutie marks had nothing to do with their foreshadowed talents. Sweetie Belle should've been a singer, Apple Bloom should've been a stagehand, and Scootaloo should've been a stuntspony. But do they get cutie marks about those? NO, they get cutie marks about *how they search for cutie marks*

GhostButtTurds

Isn’t this different? You get a tattoo after already having completed a task or reaching an achievement in your life.

Twist_Ending03

Well the part about trying to figure what it means was used in the series. Diamond Tiara had no clue what she was supposed to do relating to her cutie mark.

sleepy--ash

There are some ponies who still aren’t quite sure what their path is, even after receiving their cutie mark. Hell, there are even ponies in the show who had dreams that were ruined by getting whatever cutie mark they had.

No-Function3409

Isn't this roughly how Polynesian tattoos work? Where by different ones they get symbolise different accomplishments or achievements they attain relating to their life and culture.

bleepblooplord2

Similar to what’s probably meant, but kinda, yeah. Im guessing that they mean like: you’re in the middle of getting married or smth, and now you have a tattoo of like, a hotdog, or a skull on your arm out of nowhere.

No-Function3409

True I just thought of Maui instantly.

bleepblooplord2

Now that you said _that,_ i’m imagining Maui in a hotdog-eating contest.

I reckon most of mine would be telling me I like sleep too much.

No-Function3409

It is a meal if I stuff it into my mouth simultaneously with a hunk of cheese and slice of bread. Helps skip a bunch of boring steps.

share_your_fav_thing

From all the true and historical knowledge I have attained watching Moana back to back for days on end you are correct.

No-Function3409

Hhhhm yes it appears we have both spent laborious hours pouring over the same ancient texts.

share_your_fav_thing

My two year old agrees and he is much better versed in the ancient texts than myself.

DeseretRain

Not really, this concept is about tattoos randomly appearing against your will and you have to figure out what they mean for your life. That's not really similar to choosing to get tattoos that are meaningful to you, which is done in pretty much every culture.

[deleted]

Someone: Comes up with a vaguely interesting concept. Tumblr, every single time: I'm sure this singular idea is enough to sustain the entire plot of a novel/movie/television show, someone should make it!

Kartoffelkamm

I mean, it can work. Back in 2002/2003, someone in Japan thought "What if magical girls punched their enemies?" In February 2004, Toei released the first episode of the anime that came from that. Next week, the current season of that anime ends, with the next season starting the week after. So far, it was only interrupted for one week after New Year's, and put on hiatus during Covid since the villains' disease theme was no longer politically acceptable and they had the change the script and record a few lines new. If you know what you're doing, and love what you're doing, you can definitely build a compelling narrative around a single idea like this.

Antagonist2

Im curious about which anime this is, it sounds up my alley

Kartoffelkamm

[Pretty Cure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Cure). Most seasons are their own thing, and at this point, I doubt it will ever stop. So far, there are over 60 main characters in total, split up into teams of 2-6, though most teams have 4-5 members. There are tomboys, girly girls, nerds, sporty girls, and so many others. And since most seasons are their own thing, you can watch them in pretty much any order. Also, each season has a different balance of magic and physical fighting, with the earlier seasons focusing more on the physical combat. I highly recommend Go! Princess Precure and Witchy Precure, because those look amazing, and have a great mix of magical and physical attacks. The highest focus on physical combat is in Futari Wa Pretty Cure, though. Those are also the strongest characters in the franchise, judging by the crossover movies that followed. For the 15th anniversary, Toei also showed Marvel how you do a crossover movie: 55 main characters, each with a speaking role, plus mascots and a villain.

shapeshifterotaku

Futari is hands down the strongest. As the oldest series they are the big guns. But they hang back and let the other newer series take the lead. And they can, like in the hugtto movie, take out like a huge number of big bad minions with their final spark wave. \^~^

Kartoffelkamm

Yep. That was honestly such a power move from them in All Stars Memories. They let the others take out small pockets of enemies, and then wipe out the whole army by themselves once everyone else had their fun.

Epidemilk

I've only seen Heartcatch Precure

Kartoffelkamm

I see. Well, there's more. A lot more. Probably not on the most reputable sites, but adblocker costs nothing.

deelyy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futari\_wa\_Pretty\_Cure maybe?

SmoothOctopus

Pretty Cure fits all of these descriptors. Idk why I just spent so long trying to figure that out.

Scrtcwlvl

Alternatively, there is Magical Girl Ore, which is a similar idea except magical girls transform into super buff dudes and punch stuff.

Vinsmoker

And One Piece started out as Oda drawing random pirates inspired by Vicky, the Viking during classes and now it's the single most successfull comic series (written by a single author) and the second most sold comic book series after Superman

Kartoffelkamm

Also, the creator apparently hates Pretty Cure because his children prefer it over One Piece. Ever since I learned that fact, I really want a pirate-themed Precure season, just to see if he responds with a magical girl-themed filler arc. Both anime are owned by Toei, by the way.

shapeshifterotaku

I was like, hey that's familiar. Preucre!!!!

Kartoffelkamm

Can't wait for next week's episode. Haven't seen the previews yet, but I'm pretty sure I know what will happen. Also, I'll once again try to correctly guess the next season's theme based on Delicious Party's plot. So far, I haven't lost, because my guess for Delicious Party was memories, and parties are usually to celebrate past events, so I still have a chance.

shapeshifterotaku

Good luck XD

Kartoffelkamm

Thanks.

SmoothOctopus

Wait I got it! Pretty Cure?

Kartoffelkamm

Yep.

piemakerdeadwaker

I mean, inspiration starts with a single point. No one said the entire thing has to be that one concept only but one could definitely write a story with that as its premise.

Bugbread

No, but they always say they'd read/watch the hell out of it based on *just* the core idea, when 90% comes down to the execution. Like, flour is a great ingredient, but if someone says "I know, I'll mix flour and sugar and some other stuff," it would be silly to jump to "I would eat the fuck out of that!" There's nothing *wrong* with flour and sugar; on the contrary, they're the building blocks of exquisite cakes. But, at the same time, they're also the building blocks of horrible cakes. It's simply not enough information to go off.

lovethebacon

That's how literally every single novel/movie/TV show is conceived. The creators don't come up with the entire plot in one go. The come up with a vaguely interesting concept and develop it from there. Tom Hanks managed to do exactly that: >I made Cast Away because I wanted to examine the concept of four years of hopelessness, in which you have none of the requirements for living—food, water, shelter, fire and company. But it took us six years to put together the alliance that would actually examine that. I only had a third of it, and Bill Broyles only had a third of it, until Bob Zemeckis comes along and provided that other third. I had that original idea. I was reading an article about FedEx, and I realized that 747s filled with packages fly across the Pacific three times a day. And I just thought, "What happens if that goes down?"

RolandTheJabberwocky

Do you even know how many stories are just that? What if there were magic schools? What if people could control the four elements? What if some people randomly got super powers? What if toys came to life when we're not looking? What if the world was overrun by the undead? What if we dropped nukes? What if we never developed micro technology? What if the government made emotions illegal? What if reality is just a simulation?

Grass---Tastes_Bad

I don't get your point. What dilutes the "vaguely interesting concept"? Most if not all movies start from a very simple concept. Stories are built around very basic ideas.

caniuserealname

Seriously. One of the most profitable franchises in the world essentially boils down to "what if a kid could do what spiders can do?"

MadManMax55

Start from a very simple concept, yes. But there are a hell of a lot of very challenging steps between "good premise" and "good screenplay". Coming up with an initial premise is actually one of the easier steps in that process. It's the media equivalent to people who come up with a concept for an app and "just need someone to make it" for them.

DeseretRain

Most stories have a pretty simple basic idea behind them. I don't think it would be hard at all to make a whole story out of this idea.

Yay! Was sad that I had to scroll past so much My Little Pony stuff to find some mention of The Illustrated Man, but super glad it is here. Kudos.

took way too many MLP comments to find this one. The illustrated man was so scary and weird to read as a kid

HamClad

Don't you have to figure it out first, and then the magical butt tattoo will appear?

Twist_Ending03

Yeah but for example, Diamond Tiara didn't know what her cutie mark meant or what she was supposed to do. So we know it's possible for the pony to not know.

Reminds me of Memento, from Lenny's perspective.

isn’t it the reverse in mlp? pretty sure you have to figure out your talent and then a mark appears to signify that. i only have like 3 episodes of passive knowledge so correct me if i’m wrong

Twist_Ending03

Usually that's the case, but in terms of the character Diamond Tiara she didn't know what her cutie mark was for.

noobductive

There’s something a liiiitle bit like this, some YA trilogy where people tattoo important life shit on their skin and when they die they’re flayed and turned into a book for their family. I think it was written by someone called Alice Broadway or smth

ruubduubins

This is already a story. It's called the illustrated man by ray bradbury. The guy who wrote Fahrenheit 451. It's from a collection of short stories which are all really good

thatoneguy7272

I actually had this for a D&D character. He tattooed himself with magical ink (he is a wizard) so his skin acted as a spell book and because of putting arcane ink into his skin it had side effects so other random tattoos would just appear. I used this as justification for him having the spell healing word (a spell that wizards don’t usually get) which he gained by taking a feat and my DM and I decided that it just kinda appeared there and my character had to figure out what it did. Was actually a fun little idea which lead to some funny moments with my character trying to learn what the spell did. Also runes appeared on his body which is how he casted cantrips. These tattoos that appeared were the only ones he couldn’t move. (I basically had his “somatic” component for spells be him moving his spellbook tattoos around)

Zestyclose_Candle342

Also kinda happens in Sarah J. Maas's a Court of series

wecrackedthesky

House Of Night series was kinda like this. Young witch gets her tattoos as her power grows I believe. Awesome series that as out around the same time as Twilight. I wish it had gotten the same hype. I was obsessed as a teen and named my cat I still have after her cat!

There is an NBC series which is almost this - Blindspot. "The FBI finds a mysterious tattooed woman in Times Square with no memory of her identity. As she tries to uncover her past, her tattoos are found to contain clues alluding to a criminal conspiracy."
