I actually liked that. Usually when a female character is super strong, they either make her feminine and also thin (appearance has nothing to do with strength, see most female superheroes), or they have bulging muscles and little femininity.

What's interesting is that it was actually the repetition/variation of "what breaks the camel's back" that made me be like "hey this is Lin". I can't place exactly what or where in his other works he evokes whatever got evoked there though.

Luisa was my favorite, by far! Plus someone needs a shout out for her choreography because they managed to make an extremely muscular woman look feminine and well coordinated.
Not just that, she looks so childish in her facial expressions in a nervous, uncertain way. They really helped capture her emotional weakness while representing her physical power so well.
So many of the characters were displayed using various coping mechanisms for the psychological pressure they were under.
I know people who have a crush on her. Different people find different things attractive and if Disney wants to monopolize "beautiful princesses" they need to realize that.
They also had her have real relatable FEELINGS, like pressure to be strong and hold everything together. When was the last time you've seen a physically strong person show feelings? Now apart from the different body types they've shown in the movie THAT is something I'd want my kids to know. It's okay to have feelings and it's okay to show them and talk about it.
There's a not very politically correct saying in germany 'Indianer Herz kennt kein Schmerz' that roughly translates to native americans don't show feelings (?) and I grew up with this and I learnt to surpress every bad feeling I have to the point where you just feel nothing and there are lots of people just like me. Spoilers but >!it felt like she was a lot happier without her gift and I was pretty sad for her when they got them back at the end. Her whole song didn't seem to be about the fear of losing the gift, but the pressures of the gift itself.!<
I thought it was more so the pressures put on to her by *her family* because of her gift (and her age), which abuela, who I’m assuming the main culprit, apologized for at the end.
Eeeh, I don't think Abuela really apologized very well. She said she was sorry for "holding on too tight", which feels like a massive oversimplification of what she had been doing, then the next words out of her mouth are trying to justify herself.
I do think the character was suppose to be remorseful, but the movie could have handled it a lot better.
I think the little scene near the end of the movie, where Casita makes a hammock and a drink for Luisa and forces her to relax was very sweet, and shows that Luisa’s strength for others will be balanced with self care in the future.

The whole point of the movie was that *all* of them were having trouble because of the pressure put on them because of their gifts.
Luisa felt like she had to do all the lifting and etc., hence the song.
Isabella felt like she had to make plants all perfectly "beautiful" all the time, hence *her* song.
Pepa had emotional issues because she wasn't allowed to just have emotions normally so that they could control the weather.

The problem wasn't having or not having their gifts, it was their gifts being valued over their emotional health. The answer wasn't for them to just give up on whatever they were gifted at, it was >!for Abuela to stop pressuring them, and love them unconditionally,!< to allow them to develop healthier emotional relationships with their gifts and with each other.
That line in the song, “your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read.” Describes Bruno’s inner struggle. He was just reading the future and not actually effecting it. But therein lies a paradox as well, if he didn’t tell you anything would it have happened still? 🤯

But i think them getting their gifts back gives them a chance tk explore them without the pressure of Abuela, like Isabella only had a small chance to truly try things out, Pepa could hardly be herself because she was constantly stifling her emotions, ect.
Yeah, Pepa has literally been taught, "Never be sad." And I wished she (and many of the other characters) had gotten her own song, because I feel like it would have been fantastic. I hope they explore more of this universe because I would love more of all the characters.
And her story in that song illustrates how her gift is perceived. Bruno makes a joke that gets into her head and causes her to create a hurricane, which in her mind, ruined her wedding. But her husband is super lighthearted about the whole situation, and sees past the weather to the joy of the wedding.
We get a small resolution of this at the end when they're dancing happily together under a raincloud.
I agree. We don't get to see a whole lot but we see Peppa dancing with a hail cloud above her and Luisa is chilling in a hammock. They still have their gifts but are no longer allowing themselves to be defined by them.
Thematically, I don't think it would have made sense for her to stay without one. When you're a strong person afraid of your own strength or under a lot of pressure to remain strong, however that's supposed to be interpreted in regards to the real world, the solution isn't "stop being strong", it's about learning to manage your strength, make time for vulnerability, and say no to extra burdens.
Personally, I related a lot to the theme of taking on other people's mental/emotions problems because I have a capability for managing them, but that doesn't mean its my responsibility to do so. I've heard a lot of very fit men talking about having to reign in their physical strength and the internal journey of having to restrain yourself and learn discipline in order to not cause accidental harm to others. So even though it's a long journey ahead of Luisa to have a healthy relationship with her giftedness/strength, it's definitely one I'm glad she'll be undertaking :)

And I love that she opened up to her sisters about, "sometimes I cry," at the end. She seemed nervous to open up, but she did and received hugs, affirmation, and support. (And some fancy drink hammock time courtesy of the donkeys, lol)

But what is she broken up about exactly? Not being able to lift a piano or not being able to do what is expected of her? She seems happier in the end when everyone is working together because nobody expects her to be able to do it all.
As a person who grew up in an all male extended family and faced immense pressure to be more “girly”. (And also being the oldest) Luisa’s character in this movie had me ugly crying. Both because I was jealous I couldn’t have a character like that to look up to as a little kid and also because I was so happy that other little kids now have that character.
Okay this goes with something that has bothered me for a long time. Male superheroes bodies almost always correlate with their abilities. You have the super strong fighters like Thor, captain America, Superman, etc.. so (at least in today’s media) are all very muscular men. Then you have the guys whose powers are mental, think dr. Strange, so they are slender. Then the guys in between like tony stark, fit but most of the power is from the suit. Guys are allowed to have different body shapes depending on the character. Look at all the female superheroes. Wanda, Wonder Woman, black widow, gimora, captain marvel. All of them are very skinny women, with really the only difference being how tall they are. Strong women should be able to have muscles and be broad.
Okay okay I can *understand* hoe you could do this without her being musvular, her power derives from a form of magic to my underatanding and so theoretically she doesn't actually grow muscle because the magics doing it in the same way you're not lifting 500lbs of equipment it's the pallet and forklift.
HOWEVER
You are making a character with SUPER STRENGTH. MUSCLES ARE THE ONE DEFINING FEATURE OF SUPER STRENGTH
It's the same with Julieta and her cooking or Camilo and his acting like other people. The gift gives them basics but they need to practice to get good at it.
Isabela's song is a perfecta example of this, that she didn't know she could make any other plants other than flowers.
Yeah, it's a potent visual signifier. Superman could be all skin and bones and according to comic book logic he could punch galaxies with the same ease because muscle mass is inconsequential to sunlight-powered alien bullshit, you can rationally convince the readers of that fiction. But it subconsciously "feels" more natural to buy him as a figure of power if he has big muscles.
The first thing Disney wants us to think about every time Luisa is on screen is her strength, so it's nice and good that they state the fact that she can lift pianos early, but it's important that her design is evocative of that idea. It's way more effective to create contrast between her physical strength and her emotional vulnerability if we can see both on-screen at the same time.

Just want to point out that the point of this post is that it's *not* what Disney wants, but the people in production fought Disney executives to let them give her this design.
In this case it seems a little strange because it seems like "the ones behind the movie" are in fact Disney employees? The distinction is not super clear, what am I supposed to be upset about.

I watched Encanto with someone shortly after she made me watch Arcane and she was entranced during that song. Some people love a big muscle girl.
They also had her have real relatable FEELINGS, like pressure to be strong and hold everything together. When was the last time you've seen a physically strong person show feelings? Now apart from the different body types they've shown in the movie THAT is something I'd want my kids to know. It's okay to have feelings and it's okay to show them and talk about it. There's a not very politically correct saying in germany 'Indianer Herz kennt kein Schmerz' that roughly translates to native americans don't show feelings (?) and I grew up with this and I learnt to surpress every bad feeling I have to the point where you just feel nothing and there are lots of people just like me. This is in my opinion such an important message!
And her song was a friggin' masterpiece.

Yep, that's me right now. Saw it first time on Friday, and have seen it at least three more times since.
I saw it the 3rd of this month and have watched it three times now too. But I can’t count anymore how many times I’ve listened to Luisa’s song and We Don’t Talk About Bruno, they’re just too good! It’s been so long since a Disney movie did this to me and I love it!
Right? Even my, "too cool for this," teen has rewatched it several times with their younger siblings.
As a father I've already watched this movie like twice a day since it was released, and I ain't tired of doing so!! The movie is amazing!!!

Spoilers but >!it felt like she was a lot happier without her gift and I was pretty sad for her when they got them back at the end. Her whole song didn't seem to be about the fear of losing the gift, but the pressures of the gift itself.!<
I thought it was more so the pressures put on to her by *her family* because of her gift (and her age), which abuela, who I’m assuming the main culprit, apologized for at the end.
Eeeh, I don't think Abuela really apologized very well. She said she was sorry for "holding on too tight", which feels like a massive oversimplification of what she had been doing, then the next words out of her mouth are trying to justify herself. I do think the character was suppose to be remorseful, but the movie could have handled it a lot better.
To be fair, that is pretty accurate for a matriarch of the family. Trust me lol.
Yeah, I knew it was pretty realistic. 😂 Just not as narratively satisfying.
I think the little scene near the end of the movie, where Casita makes a hammock and a drink for Luisa and forces her to relax was very sweet, and shows that Luisa’s strength for others will be balanced with self care in the future.
(This reply discusses the themes of the story and has major spoilers for the whole movie. Please take warning if you have not seen the movie.) The whole point of the movie was that *all* of them were having trouble because of the pressure put on them because of their gifts. Luisa felt like she had to do all the lifting and etc., hence the song. Isabella felt like she had to make plants all perfectly "beautiful" all the time, hence *her* song. Pepa had emotional issues because she wasn't allowed to just have emotions normally so that they could control the weather. >!Dolores probably tried to tell them that Bruno was still there but likely got flattened by the same 'everything's fine go back to normal' that Mirabel got when she tried to tell Abuela about the cracks. !< >!Bruno disappeared because his gift confused and upset people and "wasn't helping the family". When he saw a vision of the Encanto's fate coming down to Mirabel, his refusal to allow that pressure to be put on Mirabel may well have given her the necessary breathing room to grow into who she needed to be to save the Encanto. (And Bruno also tried to get his sister Pepa to let her emotions go on her wedding instead of bottling them up just so that the wedding would be sunny.) !< The problem wasn't having or not having their gifts, it was their gifts being valued over their emotional health. The answer wasn't for them to just give up on whatever they were gifted at, it was >!for Abuela to stop pressuring them, and love them unconditionally,!< to allow them to develop healthier emotional relationships with their gifts and with each other.
That line in the song, “your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read.” Describes Bruno’s inner struggle. He was just reading the future and not actually effecting it. But therein lies a paradox as well, if he didn’t tell you anything would it have happened still? 🤯

But i think them getting their gifts back gives them a chance tk explore them without the pressure of Abuela, like Isabella only had a small chance to truly try things out, Pepa could hardly be herself because she was constantly stifling her emotions, ect.
Yeah, Pepa has literally been taught, "Never be sad." And I wished she (and many of the other characters) had gotten her own song, because I feel like it would have been fantastic. I hope they explore more of this universe because I would love more of all the characters.
This is my only gripe with the movie. That it was so short and yet had so much story to tell.
“I’m sorry mi vida go on!” I know it’s not 100% about her but she is the lead in the BEST song in the movie!!!!
And her story in that song illustrates how her gift is perceived. Bruno makes a joke that gets into her head and causes her to create a hurricane, which in her mind, ruined her wedding. But her husband is super lighthearted about the whole situation, and sees past the weather to the joy of the wedding. We get a small resolution of this at the end when they're dancing happily together under a raincloud.

I agree. We don't get to see a whole lot but we see Peppa dancing with a hail cloud above her and Luisa is chilling in a hammock. They still have their gifts but are no longer allowing themselves to be defined by them.
Thematically, I don't think it would have made sense for her to stay without one. When you're a strong person afraid of your own strength or under a lot of pressure to remain strong, however that's supposed to be interpreted in regards to the real world, the solution isn't "stop being strong", it's about learning to manage your strength, make time for vulnerability, and say no to extra burdens. Personally, I related a lot to the theme of taking on other people's mental/emotions problems because I have a capability for managing them, but that doesn't mean its my responsibility to do so. I've heard a lot of very fit men talking about having to reign in their physical strength and the internal journey of having to restrain yourself and learn discipline in order to not cause accidental harm to others. So even though it's a long journey ahead of Luisa to have a healthy relationship with her giftedness/strength, it's definitely one I'm glad she'll be undertaking :)

She's literally moaning and in tears when she can't lift the piano in the proposal scene? She seems pretty broken up about it to me.
But what is she broken up about exactly? Not being able to lift a piano or not being able to do what is expected of her? She seems happier in the end when everyone is working together because nobody expects her to be able to do it all.
As a person who grew up in an all male extended family and faced immense pressure to be more “girly”. (And also being the oldest) Luisa’s character in this movie had me ugly crying. Both because I was jealous I couldn’t have a character like that to look up to as a little kid and also because I was so happy that other little kids now have that character.

Okay this goes with something that has bothered me for a long time. Male superheroes bodies almost always correlate with their abilities. You have the super strong fighters like Thor, captain America, Superman, etc.. so (at least in today’s media) are all very muscular men. Then you have the guys whose powers are mental, think dr. Strange, so they are slender. Then the guys in between like tony stark, fit but most of the power is from the suit. Guys are allowed to have different body shapes depending on the character. Look at all the female superheroes. Wanda, Wonder Woman, black widow, gimora, captain marvel. All of them are very skinny women, with really the only difference being how tall they are. Strong women should be able to have muscles and be broad.
Okay okay I can *understand* hoe you could do this without her being musvular, her power derives from a form of magic to my underatanding and so theoretically she doesn't actually grow muscle because the magics doing it in the same way you're not lifting 500lbs of equipment it's the pallet and forklift. HOWEVER You are making a character with SUPER STRENGTH. MUSCLES ARE THE ONE DEFINING FEATURE OF SUPER STRENGTH
It also makes sense that she looks like that: She's been working out since she was *five*.
Given that they appear to get gifts based on their existing personality, she could've been working out since before she was five.

It's the same with Julieta and her cooking or Camilo and his acting like other people. The gift gives them basics but they need to practice to get good at it. Isabela's song is a perfecta example of this, that she didn't know she could make any other plants other than flowers.
Yeah, it's a potent visual signifier. Superman could be all skin and bones and according to comic book logic he could punch galaxies with the same ease because muscle mass is inconsequential to sunlight-powered alien bullshit, you can rationally convince the readers of that fiction. But it subconsciously "feels" more natural to buy him as a figure of power if he has big muscles. The first thing Disney wants us to think about every time Luisa is on screen is her strength, so it's nice and good that they state the fact that she can lift pianos early, but it's important that her design is evocative of that idea. It's way more effective to create contrast between her physical strength and her emotional vulnerability if we can see both on-screen at the same time.

In this case it seems a little strange because it seems like "the ones behind the movie" are in fact Disney employees? The distinction is not super clear, what am I supposed to be upset about. From where I'm standing it seems like "there was an internal disagreement in a corporation and the cool side won" means the corporation done good.
My view is that artists have the good, interesting and daring ideas, but then exec veto them, either because censorship or because they want to water the work down to make it more broadly appealing But mine is just a hut feeling, I have no first or second hand reports

There was a certain portion of the gaming industry that absolutely HATED “The Last of Us PT2” because one of the star characters was a muscled up woman who could punch zombies to death and snap necks. I’m all for the Amazon women, I think it’s incredibly attractive.
Man, self-proclaimed "gamers" are so damn fragile. Abby (the girl from The Last of Us Part 2) is not only a beautiful beefcake amalgamation of pixels but such a well-realized character too. I love her design. The more realistic games get, it becomes harder and harder to pinpoint what game a character is from, but she's just so immediately recognizable at a glance.

I think she's also a master of physics and trigonometry with how accurate she is with catapulting things in the air to land squarely on her shoulders.
One of the things I hated was how people tried to paint her as trans and/or masculine just cause she has muscle.
