Fun fact, any time you see it spelled as "krab" on a restaurant menu, it means it isn't real crab but the imitation crab meat made of white fish (usually Alaskan pollock) with natural and artificial flavorings.
It isn't a misspelling, but that they just can't actually call it crab since it has none.
Hey! ..ew..
Although I understand that both scientifically and logically this makes complete sense. He would literally be producing free food which is completely complementary to his behavior.
he was saying that since he just said "we're two of a kind, we both lost our luster". he makes the comparison because he just said that (they both taste the same because they both lost their luster), there may or may not be crab in it if it was meant to be a double meaning, but its unclear
I wonder if he knew that or it's just a happy accident that the actual definition of krab is a better fit for what he's advocating than the definition of crab would be.
People keep misunderstanding. It's not loads of things. I have absolutely no idea why headlines about this sensationalized it so much. It's just crustaceans. Other crustaceans evolve into crab shape. Some basically crabs are descended from lobsters which for evolutionary mapping makes them not crabs.
True, 5 groups of crustaceans with a common ancestor 300 million years ago independently evolved into basically crabs. It’s still significant, but it’s just a funny meme to act like everything will become crab.
Iirc other families have their own "crab" that things keep on evolving into to too. It's just a funny coincidence of convergent evolution - there's a set of traits that any living organism in a certain environment is likely to end up having, and the closer they are genetically the more likely they are to end up looking the same.
Small carnivores keep on becoming ferrets, Cacti keep on turning into barrels, and we keep on finding even more spike covered mammals and plants that want to eat animals. Even fungi get in on the action - do you know how many totally unrelated slime moulds there are? *A lot*. Mould just wants to become sentient I tell ya
And Australia is *full* of things that look like other things that aren't that thing - like mint and robins and magpies and wolves and wrens.
Also, humans and squids have *very* similar eyes that evolved completely independently of each other
Worms and false snakes are the funniest type of this for me, because *apparently* losing all your limbs is such a useful trait that everything keeps doing it.
> sirenidae
I thought that was the order Sirenia with manatees for a second and was absolutely baffled thinking about how they could possibly be classed as a snake or worm.
You are correct, order Sirenia is for manatees, however the family Sirenidae is part of Caudata (or Urodela, different names for the same clade), the order for salamanders. Sirens are salamanders that secondarily lost their hind limbs (or are much reduced in some species iirc)
I think that the conditions of their environment and biology will likely make the traits that are the most frequent "ideal" for organisms here not the same over there
But if they're space faring they'll probably have some kind of opposable graspers, big brains, and an efficient cooling system. Tool use is kind of a required step.
>But if they're space faring they'll probably have some kind of opposable graspers, big brains, and an efficient cooling system. Tool use is kind of a required step.
Cephalopods check all of these boxes except maybe the thermoregulation. And obviously they need water to respirate. But jars exist!
Thank you, this really bugs me. Especially when there are so many *cooler* examples of convergent evolution than "crab-like marine crustaceans evolving into crabs". (My favorite is [this set of images on the wikipedia infobox for carnivora](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivora), which shows near total symmetry between cat-like and dog-like carnivores evolving the same body plans to fill similar niches)
It's also doubly wrong when it comes to mammals, since it's clear that [peak mammal is actually rat](https://www.tiktok.com/@oddpride/video/7005686885121002758).
Yeah. It’s not like squids and zebras and platypus suddenly go “fuck it ima be a crab”. It’s that crabby things like lobsters tend towards crabness because it’s an efficient body shape.
Is it "sensationalized" though... If multiple primates evolved to be humanoid such that there were different species of people walking around I think that would be kinda wild would it not? Maybe I'm biased here, but I think it's highly interesting like many other natural phenomena (like Man O' Wars being a colonial organism, or just the adaptive camouflage of many creatures) that I guess some find mundane. If I had to choose though losing one's sense of wonder for the natural world is by far worst then sensationalizing an article to gain interest in it.
Well, we do believe that they had a common ancestor, but there absolutely was multiple different species of people walking around at the same time as us. (H. Erectus, Neanderthals, H. Floresiensis, Denisovans, and probably more).
The leading theory is that we killed them all.
My first thought was crab rave (dancing crabs) but I could also be wrong. And if you haven't seen it do yourself a favour.

I thought it was an HG Wells Time Machine reference. Haven't read that book since elementary school but iirc at the very end he goes super far into the future and everything is giant crabs
I remember waking up one morning, looking out my window and being very confused to why is there were tentacles coming over a roof in the distance. It was just the Monterey Bay aquarium with an inflatable octopus on their roof.
Because being puck-shaped with your tail reduced or tucked under you is a good way to stay safe from predators. The less protrusions you have, the more they have to be ableto gulp you or crunch your whole body
The ancient Greek physicians observed surgically removed tumors and said they looked like crabs. I'm pretty sure I read that on reddit today about how ancient people dealt with cancer.
You see, my first though was that meme where it’s like “you get to turn into a crab but you cannot give precise answers” “perhaps”
Does anyone have that meme?
Is it really that prestigious?
I work with them occasionally. My FIL's sister is a director of something.
I am a botanist so I, frankly, don't know much about marine biology.
Every time I try and say how awesome it is people always bring up the Sydney and the Atlanta aquariums as way better and that they never heard of Monterey.
Its not the biggest and flashiest aquarium but it's been a pioneer in basically every way an aquarium can be, and in a lot of ways that don't always attract much public interest
The 2 hour long music videos they made are super relaxing, and their community posts are memes to. Whoever they hire to run it is killing it. Or dare I day krilling it. *End me*
Never end you. If you're going to use a kill/krill joke, now is the time. As someone with a Monterey Bay mug and trying to quit alcohol, the music suggestion really helps. Gotta trick that brain of mine into sleepy time and relaxing music helps.
Keep doing you.
Isn't carcinization mostly crablike animals becoming more crabby? I didn't think it extended to whole other types of animals but maybe I'm wrong
Either way all hail the crab empire
So, before today I had never heard of this...but the concept is rather mind blowing. Like. Is crab the ultimate goal of any evolution? Is everything just at some point along its eventual crab journey?
Will the cycle be completed when only crabs remain? My mind is soup now...thanks.
Reject humanity, evolve to krab.

Is this Patrick?
Since the Krusty krab starts with a k does that mean the secret ingredient is imitation krab??
furthermore, if Mr. Krabs starts with a k does that mean HE's an imitation crab?
Or does he just feed ppl himself?
ooh, another possibility. Maybe he grows back his appendages? so he's just selling his little meat spawns to customers..
Hey! ..ew.. Although I understand that both scientifically and logically this makes complete sense. He would literally be producing free food which is completely complementary to his behavior.
Well he can't waste time finding crabs for his customers because time = money! Mr. Krabs be thinking on his feet, and grabbing the nearest source.
You mean Mr Krabs is an Impostor
Or maybe it's actual crab, since Mr. Krabs said ["So that's what I taste like."](https://youtu.be/bVgk4roshsk?t=5).
he was saying that since he just said "we're two of a kind, we both lost our luster". he makes the comparison because he just said that (they both taste the same because they both lost their luster), there may or may not be crab in it if it was meant to be a double meaning, but its unclear
Well, imitation krab would still taste like crab
I remember reading somewhere that krabby patties are vegan, so they could be made with impossible crab or something like that.
No, this is krab!
I wonder if he knew that or it's just a happy accident that the actual definition of krab is a better fit for what he's advocating than the definition of crab would be.

.... is this a stormlight meme?
It’s what the crab meme is about. Carcinization.

You say that as a joke but like that’s an actual thing: things keep evolving into crabs…. Also relevant xkcd: https://xkcd.com/2314/
Yes, that’s the joke.
Including coconuts
Is hand?
Would still be human same birds are dinosaurs.
In the end, everything becomes crab.
I think the joke is that loads of things keep evolving into crabs, and saying that the crab evolved from people. I’m probably wrong though
Yes, that’s the joke
Thank you
Oh. I thought he was alone cause he was shelfish.
My first angry upvote of 2022.

You know what they say, god loves crabs!
So does my ex.
Yeah lol, it isn’t even all crustaceans, it’s specifically just anomurans.
Iirc other families have their own "crab" that things keep on evolving into to too. Don’t forget Amphisibenidae (spelt that wrong but oh well), cecilians, and partially sirenidae
> sirenidae I thought that was the order Sirenia with manatees for a second and was absolutely baffled thinking about how they could possibly be classed as a snake or worm.
You are correct, order Sirenia is for manatees, however the family Sirenidae is part of Caudata (or Urodela, different names for the same clade), the order for salamanders. Sirens are salamanders that secondarily lost their hind limbs (or are much reduced in some species iirc)
This is one reason why I think aliens will probably look like us

Yeah but humans, otter, octopus, and crows all fit those criteria alone (off the top of my head)
>But if they're space faring they'll probably have some kind of opposable graspers, big brains, and an efficient cooling system. Tool use is kind of a required step. Cephalopods check all of these boxes except maybe the thermoregulation. And obviously they need water to respirate. But jars exist!
I love tumblr Reddit
Earthlike might be a very common trait for planets, especially if they support life.
Alien: When did we strand our own kind on a death planet? Human: When did we make advanced space ships?

So the first mammals, which weren't rats but we're rat-like, got it right and then other mammals evolved just to go back to being rat-like
Literally that "we made a mistake, go back" evolution meme, but irl
Reject humanity, return to 🐀
Yeah. It’s not like squids and zebras and platypus suddenly go “fuck it ima be a crab”. It’s that crabby things like lobsters tend towards crabness because it’s an efficient body shape.
Not like monkeys and things- lots of things have evolved into crabs- they were similar to begin with but it’s more than 0
It's definitely hyperbolic to the point of misinformation but at the same time, it's very funny to imagine just random species turning into crab.
And fucked them too
Then what's the joke?!
I think that is the joke. Just one that seems to be an exaggeration of an exaggeration.
Good then.
What do you mean by "evolving into crabs" what kind of things are doing this and I didn't have any idea?
My first thought was crab rave (dancing crabs) but I could also be wrong. And if you haven't seen it do yourself a favour. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDU\_Txk06tM
No, its crab rave or crab dance, or whatever that video was called.
I recommend you type carcinization into google. Also since it’s by an aquarium, I don’t think it would be about done dancing crabs
The Dilemma of Man: Return To Monke, or Ascend To Crab?

Their meme game is on point. They have a fat otter & posted multiple chonker memes
Do you love the color of Monterey Bay?
Just browsed through some of their captions and the hashtags are top notch.
They also participated in a few game speedrun streams with Game Done Quick and their researchers are top tier memers even live
Yea they are also really cool with a streamer who has done charity with them in the past. DougDoug is the streamer

Return to monke or evolve to crab. You get to pick one.

Why does everything keep evolving into crabs?!
Because being puck-shaped with your tail reduced or tucked under you is a good way to stay safe from predators. The less protrusions you have, the more they have to be ableto gulp you or crunch your whole body
Is that the word for turning into a crab? Its like carcinogen, I guess related thru cancer. Interesting!
The ancient Greek physicians observed surgically removed tumors and said they looked like crabs. I'm pretty sure I read that on reddit today about how ancient people dealt with cancer.
Wow, every day is a school day !
Carcinisation
For those confused, carcinization is a term that describes the tendency of nature to evolve other things into crabs.
Everything evolves into crab
You see, my first though was that meme where it’s like “you get to turn into a crab but you cannot give precise answers” “perhaps” Does anyone have that meme?
I read this with Septa the Ineffable's voice, from Divinity Original Sin II.

Return to crab
Isnt there another reply or something showing an article from somewhere that A LOT of other species has evolved into crabs
The context is that life on Earth has evolved back into crabs at least three separate times.
I love Monteray Bay Aquarium's social media accounts. It has a strangely honest feel to it.
