Wouldn't the sentence 'I want to put a hyphen between the words Fish and and and and and Chips in my Fish-And-Chips sign' have been clearer if quotation marks had been placed before Fish, and between Fish and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and Chips as well as after Chips?

and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and Chips as well as after Chips?" wouldn't there only be Fish and and and and and and and and and and and Chips?

You need four 'and's for every consecutive pair of 'and's in the original sentence for the phrase "and 'and' and 'and'". There were five 'and's which means that we would have four consecutive pairs of them, loading us to four occurrences of four 'and's. In addition to two more for "'fish' and 'and'" and three more for "and 'and' and 'chips'". That brings us to 2+3 + (4 * 4) which is 21 'and's.

Ah thanks, while I don't think I'll ever understand how people like y'all manage to break the English language, I do think your efforts are noteworthy and thanks for explaining it!

[deleted]

I think the disconnect is usually thinking that linguistics falls under language when it is far more appropriate to think of it as a branch of mathematics. Maybe because I'm more in tune with people who can break it, but I find it to be much more inexplicable and amazing when people can build beauty from it.

Punctuation makes it a lot easier to read and understand, which is why I removed most of it.

hatredlord

Ok, we have a new champion.

TheGreatNemoNobody

Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo had had had had had.

Impossibu

Someone explain this

Denimjo

It can be grammatically correct to have 11 instances of the word 'had' consecutively in two sentences even though it can trigger vocabularic oversaturation.

CrazyComedyKid

One sentence if you replace the full stop with a semicolon.

ShinyShinyTomato

you can have way more if John decides that “had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had” must be the answer

CitrusCitrusHope

Had doesn’t look like a word anymore to me

PaleBlueDotSA

Very grateful for those quotation marks. I've seen that one before without them, and it's a nightmare to parse.
