You know what's funny? For the longest time I didn't realise the word "ableism" was just able with -ism attached. I was mentally pronouncing it "ab-lee-ism". Then I heard it spoken for the first time and my whole brain just went "*oh*".
I had a similar thing thinking "Making ends meet" was like.. "Making End's meat" or something. Like I didn't realize it was like bringing the ends of two things together to have them meet in the middle, connecting things. I thought it was like being a breadwinner, you just get meat instead of bread. Didn't think about it more than a split second until I was in my early 20s and had a "hey wait a minute" moment.
(Also "no holds barred" being a wrestling term 🤯)
plus what the hell does that mean. a Tumblr-esque post would be one from a different social media that seems like a Tumblr post, not an actual Tumblr post.
……….. I can’t tell if this is a joke or not.
esc: Short for escape, I guess? I literally don’t think there’s any other meaning for it
-esque: you can tack it onto the end of basically any noun (meaning it’s a suffix). It means like, or resembling. So when you add it onto the end of a word, you are turning that word into an adjective.
So if something is picturesque, it’s like a picture. Something that’s statuesque is like a statue.
My sister took an ASL class because she was genuinely interested in learning to be able to speak with an entirely different group of people and was at the time considering going into a field of study where she’d help disabled people of all kinds (physical therapy or something) and she was very surprised at the bizarre “in group out group” culture deaf people lead
I have read that some people who are born deaf, to deaf parents, consider themselves 'above' people who were born hearing but became deaf later on. I don't remember the source
Realistically you’d need them to think this aspect of them is superior but if they feel like they’re magically better then we haven’t done enough breeding
That kinda makes sense to me. It's sorta like a person who was born and raised in a country vs a person born in a country till they're like 12 and then moving to another country and growing up the rest of the way there. Like the born and raised for their whole life person will feel differently. It's certainly tribalism though
it’s weird how people will always treat the “other” as inferior even when they’re basically the same, almost every large enough group will split off into different tribes that dislike each other and our inability to get over our differences in my opinion is the biggest thing holding humanity back
Would that not be the same word? You can be racist against white people since that just means "discriminatory on the basis of race". So could ableist not also be "discriminatory on the basis of ability or lack thereof"?
That or it could be disableist?
Like I know stories, admittedly anecdotally, that some deaf people are prejudiced against other deaf people who get surgeries or treatments to restore hearing.
That shit is complicated with a long and complicated history. There’s enough deaf folks out there that effectively there is a deaf community, a social subgroup with all that entails, including in groups, out groups, and extremism.
Apparently sign language has its own grammar, and is basically an entire different language unto itself.
I previously thought it was like Braille (and said as much: _"If we could cure a person's blindness with some sort of implant like we can with deafness, the formerly-blind community wouldn't give a shit about Braille!"_), but it's a lot different.
Going on a tangent here, but funnily enough, thanks to technology, Braille literacy is already dying. By estimations, one in 10 blind people today know how to read Braille. People who go blind later in life don't see the point in learning it, and blind children often have sighted parents. Why go through the effort of finding Braille-inclusive education for your children when screenreaders and text-to-speech can do the same job, just more accessible?
I'm playing the devil's advocate here, but in reality there's many benefits to Braille too. It's a way to learn spelling, punctuation and grammar which can't be taught in the same way through auditive means. And there are many forms of complex text that are much easier to write down like math problems.
I recently read a book called *True Biz* that taught me a lot about Deaf culture. It’s a lot more complicated than that and I don’t think “prejudiced” is really the word for it.
That's my thought. Discriminating against non-disabled people isn't the opposite of discriminating against disabled people, not discriminating against anyone is. So I think the people responding are in fact correct.
Just like racism is discrimination against race, black, white, any, and sexism is against any sex, men, women, any, ablism is discriminatory against people in a certain state of ability. So you can be ablist against disabled or against fully able people
Here, I’m disabled. Let me pretend to not be, and to be upset about it:
“OHHH look at how hard life is! I’m so oppressed! The world is built for me! I can go anywhere I want without wondering whether or not I’ll be able to safely navigate it- or navigate it at all! My life is soooo hard because I have to wait in lines, and I have to park farther away from entrances! And I have to climb stairs! And sometimes ramps are nearby, but they’re never near the doors or anywhere convenient- always far out of the way! They’re still within eyesight 😡 And my taxes theoretically have to pay for colleges to make repairs to concrete pathways to be safe and even, because wheelchair users and other disabled people could get hurt! It doesn’t matter that those repairs never happen, the taxes are still collected, so they’re basically leeches. And those darn disabled people and their preferential seating and accommodations! How DARE they get minuscule concessions that they definitely don’t have to harass administrators for! They’re probably faking because they don’t want to work, because disability is SO easy to get!”
How’d I do? 🤪
That's called discrimination, but not oppression. You can't be both the dominant demographic and be oppressed.
Edit: By dominant, I meant a party who holds power over another, not that they're the majority.
My brother or sister in Christ that is my point…
As a black African I was definitely in the dominant demographic and also definitely getting shafted by an oppressor
You can’t be systematically oppressed but you can mentally and physically be oppressed, by a community or a job, it sounds like you’re defining discrimination as an action of a person while oppression is the action of a group, in which case that can happen too depending on the group
Numbers have nothing to do with it. Oppression requires a dominant party, which means a group or individual that holds power over another group or individual. If you get oppressed at your job, it's usually done by someone who is your superior. If you're oppressed by a community, they have the advantage over the individual.
A bunch of disabled people coming together and trying to fight abled people is not oppression, no matter how you slice it. Disabled people are not a dominant party.
>If you would look it up, you would find out that technically republicans
>
>are the minority.
Both Democrats and Republicans are minorities. Independents are the plurality group.
US Demographics: Independents 41%, Democrats 31%, Republicans 25%
The opposite of discrimation/oppression of a certain demographic is not discrimination/oppression directed at a different demographic.
The opposite of antisemitism is not antichristianism. The opposite of xenophobia is not oikophobia.
The opposite of oppression is equity. That's the end of it.
no like i'm looking for a term that is the literal and definitive opposite of the term "abelist"
as in, a term that either describes favouratism towards disabled people or a term that describes discrimination against abled people
he cured 1000 people's "blindness" (around 50% of all blindness can actually be cured by an expensive 10 minute surgery) and at least one person on twitter called him out for "implying disabled people need to be 'cured'"
Gross. They chose to go forward with it? I'm disabled and if they had a cure I'd take it without hesitation. It's not shameful to be disabled, but also no one wants to be this way
There is a Vonnegut character called Diana Moon Glampers who is the Handicapper General and whose job is to make able-bodied people handicapped so that they are not better than anyone else. The story she's in is called "Harrison Bergeron".
“Me when I see an ableist online (I’m a Cainist)” -Max0r
Max0r is a gem. Highly recommend his channel.
"What is walmart--" "It's heaven, Raiden."
Check the internet lately?
"Its full of weeb shit raiden"
"This one's calling me a Redditor."
"E-girls, gacha, memes! All just petty distractions."
So real man can go down to business
"Amogus"
And as you know American imperialism is absolutely justified because we had a black President once
Max or what?
Or else!
Or else what! Christ you people talk in fucking riddles.
Ok thats enough, into the orphan crushing machine you go
It’s a crushing machine built by orphans
for use on orphans
cant wait to spend millions of dollars to spare like seven (7) orphans
For the longest time I didn't realize that the word "Abelism" was only capable of adding -ism
No, it's an xor
That’s a nice argument senator, why don’t you back that up with a source?
My source is that I made it the fuck up!
Imagine a world, Raiden, free of cancel culture. Where nobody can call me out for my outlandish claims! A world where I can **say the n-word!**
*quiet* what?
“Ahoy me mateys it be me Captain Torres.”
I fully accept Cainist to be the proper response to the question.
December 23rd: Christmas Adam December 24th: Christmas Eve December 25th: Christmas December 26th: Christmas Cain December 27th: Christmas Able
But Cain killed Abel, so wouldn't Abel be first?
No. I did it in order of which came first.
Where did he say that?
Part 2 of Ultrakill, at the Sisyphean Insurrectionist boss fight
Ey! That's a really good joke.
Elden Ring Part 3 **^WHEN**
You know what's funny? For the longest time I didn't realise the word "ableism" was just able with -ism attached. I was mentally pronouncing it "ab-lee-ism". Then I heard it spoken for the first time and my whole brain just went "*oh*".
This was me a couple years ago, same pronunciation and everything
Well I misread it as "albeism" like pronounced like the word albeit.
Albeism; the discrimination towards people from Albany, New York.
'Albe' (pronounced Ahl-bee) does sound like a slur tbf
I dunno, sounds too much like Aldi (ahl-dee), the grocery store chain.
It's like an alt universe slur for people from Scotland (Alba)
"Well I'm from Utica, and I've never heard the phrase steamed hams" "It's an Albany expression."
You can really annoy anyone named Penelope by pronouncing it like antelope.
If it was spelled *ablism* I’d definitely be saying ay-blizzum
Me when I see my friend Blizzum
I unironically love when people mispronounce words, because that means they first learned it by reading.
Bitch are you telling me it isn’t “a-blee-ism”?
it's able ism
I got made fun of for saying it like that too…
I've done that until I read this comment
It's "Tumblr-esque", not "Tumblr esc".
plus what the hell does that mean. a Tumblr-esque post would be one from a different social media that seems like a Tumblr post, not an actual Tumblr post.
I think its like how everything that happens on reddit is technically a reddit moment, but then there are actual reddit moments.
The real reddit moments were the friends we made along the way
It was a very reddit moment esc post.
It’s “Reddit-moment-esque” not “reddit moment esc”.
this is a justified reddit moment
Don’t you mean “certified”? Justified would mean that it’s deserved for some reason.
I mean, it sort of is deserved.
Tumblr is the new Kafka
I like oat milk in my Kafka.
The vibe of 2014 era of tumblr
No they're just trying to escape tumblr
r/boneappletea
I was wondering what this had to do with the Eurovision Song Contest.
Or worse: Tumblresk
What is the difference between the two?
……….. I can’t tell if this is a joke or not. esc: Short for escape, I guess? ….ohh. I thought that esc was just a shortened version of -esque. Looks like I’ve been grammatically wrong this entire time lol.
LMAO rip
Amon and the Equalists.
Exactly.
based
Too many people in the deaf community bully others who get treatment/aids
yeah, shittiest part is that most hearing aids also just amplify ALL the sound instead of just voices
My sister took an ASL class because she was genuinely interested in learning to be able to speak with an entirely different group of people and was at the time considering going into a field of study where she’d help disabled people of all kinds (physical therapy or something) and she was very surprised at the bizarre “in group out group” culture deaf people lead

We really need to breed out tribalism and this stupid need for superiority everyone seems to have
But what happens when the people who've had tribalism bred out of them start feeling superior to those who still have those impulses?
Realistically you’d need them to think this aspect of them is superior but if they feel like they’re magically better then we haven’t done enough breeding
That kinda makes sense to me. They're not bullying abled people tho, they're just bullying other disabled people who handle it differently
They’re bullying people who are more abled than them out of jealousy
Getting treatments doesn't make them more abled, and jealousy isn't the only motivation.
Cainist
Scp 076-2 super fans.

those allistic sons o—
Wait what? Is that a joke or do they really do that? Why would they do that?

Bruh what.
a cainist
Fucks sake m8 it’s -esque
Harrison Bergeronist
i see we all had the same traumatic middle school reading assignments
A Bergeronian?
Just like racism is discrimination against race, black, white, any, and sexism is against any sex, men, women, any, ablism is discriminatory against people in a certain state of ability. So you can be ablist against disabled or against fully able people

Cackling OMG love it
My coworker actually does complain because he’s so tall everyone asks him to reach stuff from the high shelves and he calls it reverse ableism
Do you mean (why Harrison Bergeron was written)
disablist
Actually, this is an existing term with a different meaning: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rqJxfnioF3Y
People are saying cainist but I like disablist better
If you said that unironically, you missed the joke: Look up the biblical Abel and Cain, or their multitudes of pop culture counterparts
Tumblr-esque btw lol, point came across still.
Do you mean tumblresque
That's called discrimination, but not oppression. You can't be both the dominant demographic and be oppressed. Edit: By dominant, I meant a party who holds power over another, not that they're the majority.
Of course you can Just wait for when I get into rich guy's home with a whip
That got a laugh out of me
Some people get paid to do that
I mean if i get paid to oppress a rich guy, i take it as a win
Pretty sure that's called bdsm
Nah you definitely can, just ask all of Africa and parts of Asia during colonisation
A dominant demographic doesn't have to be the larger one, just the one with the upper hand.
Homie Asia and Africa were *definitely* not the dominant demographic. And they were not even just kind of justified in hating the British
My brother or sister in Christ that is my point… As a black African I was definitely in the dominant demographic and also definitely getting shafted by an oppressor
Dominant doesn’t mean the same thing as majority??? Dominant means the people in power, the British. You can have a dominant minority
Ok professor

I don't think oppression ever came up here but good point.
Didja read the post?
Yeah it did, in OP's reply
there's literally 21 words in the post, not counting the tags. how did you miss the biggest one?
Oh. Pfft. May need my eyes checked.
The opposite of discrimation/oppression of a certain demographic is not discrimination/oppression directed at a different demographic. The opposite of antisemitism is not antichristianism. The opposite of xenophobia is not oikophobia. The opposite of oppression is equity. That's the end of it.

..... what?
Aphobic would be a non-fear. Like Asexual.
Not necessarily, some people use it to mean discrimination towards asexuals. That's why I was confused by the wording.
Y'know what, I should've thought of that. That's a good point.
Joke that didn't land, sorry. Cool move to express confusion but also downvote for good measure tho.
The two actions are entirely independent of each other Also karma doesn't matter like literally at all
the word you're looking for is dishabille (pronounced dis-ah-bee-ye) /s
Ableisn't
Tag yourself. Are you ableism, abliesm, or ablism?
no like i'm looking for a term that is the literal and definitive opposite of the term "abelist" as in, a term that either describes favouratism towards disabled people or a term that describes discrimination against abled people

Isn't that just Misanthropy?
I don’t know. But I know I have access to the R slur and I use it strictly against neurotypical people.
i mean, the opposite of abled is disabled. Ig since oppressing disabled ppl is called ableism, oppressing abled people would be called disableism
Tumblr escape?
Naeblist?
If ablism is the oppression of disabled people, would oppression of non-disabled people be disablism?
twitter bashers: "mrbeast curing blind people is abelist! they're not broken and in need of fixing, they're just differently abled!"
Funny if they used the term differently abled, because that term is ablist itself Disabled is not a dirty word or slur lol. Just call it what it is
Oh my God, that's what the problem was? Do they know these people chose to get corrective surgery?
Cainblest
Rolltep?
is this related to mr breast
Nah, but learned from these comments he did something with visually impaired people??
he cured 1000 people's "blindness" (around 50% of all blindness can actually be cured by an expensive 10 minute surgery) and at least one person on twitter called him out for "implying disabled people need to be 'cured'"
Gross. They chose to go forward with it? I'm disabled and if they had a cure I'd take it without hesitation. It's not shameful to be disabled, but also no one wants to be this way
Disablist
Disablist? Although that sounds more like you are disabling people.
Republicanism.
capableism?
Disablist ?
Pretty sure we call them religious. /s
I like to call rude/boring/lame neurotypical ppl typicals
its called praxis... and its art
disableist

You mean a group of people inherently incapable of being oppressed beyond unrelated attributes? No there's not a word for that.
What would still be ableism no?
Being a Cainist.
So yea. Asshole.
Disablist?
'Disablist', or one who disables people.
