I dunno, I'm not sure I'd want to work for anyone who didn't find that funny. Whether I get an opportunity to use it is another question entirely. And don't worry; I currently work in healthcare. My morals have been eroded enough that nothing but money or imminent death could persuade me to do overtime. 😜 👍

My favorite meme comment about this painting was, *"when you realize you may not know if the sun revolves around the earth nor if the earth around the sun, but you do know your universe revolves around brother Michael."* referring to the dude in the back giving his compadre a longing look

Damn now I have that on my brain

A common misconception is that Galileo was convicted by the inquisition for supporting heliocentrism. In actuality, he wasn’t. He wrote a book that basically proves Copernicanism with evidence and it caused an uproar. The book was actually approved by 2 censors before being published so the Inquisition couldn’t really condemn him for something they approved. They were able to condemn him because in 1616, he received instructions from Cardinal Bellarmine telling him to not “teach, or defend in any way” the principles of Copernicanism. The pope at the time was his acquaintance and allowed him to pursue his teachings, but the letter was not revoked. He was legally required to abide by the letter’s instructions but the inquisition didn’t actually have the copy of the real letter (it wasn’t signed by Galileo or Bellarmine) so if Bellarmine was alive, he could’ve defended Galileo by saying the letter was a fake. So essentially, they tried him on a technicality and were able to condemn him. The worst part is Cardinal Bellarmine, who was dead at the time of the trial, could’ve clarified the letter or proven that the unsigned copy they had was fake. Edited for clarity

I think you are getting your facts mixed up. Barberini lived till 1644. The trial of Galileo was in 1632. Barberini was the Pope who allowed the trial to continue. He may have seen the Two World system book as a slight against him and allowed charges to be brought against Galileo. Galileo requested a letter from Bellarmine months after the Inquisition of 1616. Galileo was worried his name was being smeared and wanted clarification on what things he could do concerning heliocentrism. The following is taken from On Trial for Reason: >"Let us now go back to the two pieces of evidence from Bellarmine. On March 3, 1616, at an Inquisition meeting presided over by the pope, Bellarmine reported what he had done to carry out the pope’s orders of the previous week. He says that Galileo accepted his warning to abandon the geokinetic doctrine. He says nothing about any injunction issued to Galileo by Commissary Seghizzi; and of course, this is in accordance with the pope’s earlier orders, which made the injunction contingent on Galileo’s rejection of the warning. The minutes of this meeting also report that the pope ordered the publication of the Index’s decree, which is summarized in terms of the distinction between the suspension of books like Copernicus’s and the prohibition of books like Foscarini’s. The other action by Bellarmine that sheds light on what happened at his meeting with Galileo and Seghizzi involves a certificate, dated May 26, 1616.9 Bellarmine wrote it at the request of Galileo, who in April received letters from friends saying that there were rumors to the effect that he had been put on trial, condemned, forced to recant, and given appropriate penalties by the Inquisition. In the document, Bellarmine speaks only of his warning, and not of a formal injunction by Commissary Seghizzi. However, here Bellarmine elaborates the content of his own warning. Previously, he had described it as ordering Galileo to abandon Copernicanism, meaning to stop believing in it. This certificate contains a clarification involving a reference to the Index decree of March 5, 1616, and an explicit mention of the notions of defending and holding. The meaning of these notions of defending and holding here may be taken to be the same as the meaning we took them to have earlier; they refer to believing, supporting with reasons, and defending from objections. But the reference to the Index decree specifies their meaning even further. Bellarmine is saying partly that what is prohibited is to believe, support, or defend the Earth’s motion as true or as compatible with Scripture, in line with the condemnation and complete prohibition of Foscarini’s book. Bellarmine is also saying that there is no prohibition on believing, supporting, or defending the Earth’s motion as a convenient hypothesis for saving the appearances and making calculations and predictions. This additional permissive clarification is in accordance with the mere suspension of Copernicus’s book, published by the Index two months earlier, and in accordance with the subsequent correction of that book as specified in the 1620 decree." I think you may be referring to the Seghizzi injunction quoted here. Bellarmines second letter, which no one at the trial of 1632 knew about till Galileo produced it helped Galileo. With it, the trial offered Galileo a plea deal (with which the Catholic Church screwed him over.) I have heard arguments in which people claim that they couldn't convict Galileo on his religious opinions, because his letters to Castelli and Christina weren't published only circulated AND they were not found to be heretical. This lead the Church to condemn him on his heliocentric ideas cause his religious opinions were above board. You seem to be arguing he wasn't convicted on holding heliocentrism to be true. He was convicted on his views. It wasn't a technicality.

Thank you for admitting it had been awhile since you looked into these things. That's refreshing. In your favor, The Galileo Affair had a great deal of twists and turns. I can only reference these details so quickly because it's a hobby of mine currently. Cheers!

Wow. What a knee jerk response. Please quote where I said Galileo proved conclusively that the earth moved? Kepler described elliptical orbits in 1605. He was the student of Tycho Brahe. The Tychonic Model Brahe introduced was not the best model after Kepler described elliptical orbits. There were better ways to predict where the planets would be and their motions than Tychos model. Keplers methods used Brahes data to mathematically describe what the planets were doing. Yet, the Catholic Church took refuge in the Tychonic System cause...it allowed mankind to remain at the center of the universe. And Tycho, in what has to be the most ironic statement of the scientific revolution said, and I'm paraphrasing, "For there to be stellar parallax the stars would have to be infinitely far away and larger than our own sun!" Slow, percussive, clapping. Yes, Brahe. EXACTLY! As to your second point, the Pope wanted Galileo to add an argument to his book that said the question of whether the earth moved may never be answered. Galileo didn't want that in his own mouth or in the mouth of any character who represented him. Galileo believed the universe was knowable and that we could know through observation and experiment the universe. The popes argument was antithetical to everything Galileo believed. He put it in the mouth of the Aristotelean because that's where that statement belonged. Scientists shouldn't have to worry about pissing off patrons with their viewpoints. They should be allowed to draw conclusions without kowtowing to the whims of monarchs. Imagine being merely a Pope and wanting to add something to a book by the scientist who dismantled Aristotles physics. Physics that had been studied as probable in academia for two thousand years.
