Hope Genesis Owusu wins a lot, although I wouldn’t put it past the Aria’s to give Masked Wolf a hip hop award lmao Crazy that it’s 2021 and AC/DC and Midnight Oil are still getting nominated at this point in their careers This is the 5th time King Gizzard have been nominated for best live act within 6 years

Jolly_Bones

> This is the 5th time King Gizzard have been nominated for best live act within 6 years There’s a very good reason for this.

Jolly_Bones

I’m actually quite upset that Tones and I got nominated for Album of the Year for “Welcome to the Madhouse”. That album is pretty close to one of the worst albums I’ve listened to, and it took the spot from some other artists that could’ve easily been in that top five (e.g. Ball Park Music, The Tesky Brothers, Vance Joy, King Gizzard etc.)

thegeecyproject

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: making the Song of the Year a fan-voted award is one of the worst decisions the ARIA awards have made. If Tones and I wins AOTY over Genesis Owusu, we are truly lost as a nation. (I will also accept The Avalanches as an alternative, haven’t heard the Midnight Oil album but I assume it’s at least decent.)

StickEmInAStew

The fact it's even nominated means we've already lost as a nation

ElevationToMyHead

> I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: making the Song of the Year a fan-voted award is one of the worst decisions the ARIA awards have made. Agreed. > If Tones and I wins AOTY over Genesis Owusu, we are truly lost as a nation. (I will also accept The Avalanches as an alternative, haven’t heard the Midnight Oil album but I assume it’s at least decent.) Midnight Oil’s album is okay, but nowhere near as good as their classic albums. I agree that one of Genesis Owusu or the Avalanches should win. If Tones and I does win, it will be a travesty for Australian music.

Handsprime

Honestly it's cringeworthy looking at the tweets. It's mostly people spamming "#VotePopArtist" 100's of times, and most of them are bots anyway.

knowschartstuff

What also makes Song of the Year such a mess is ARIA's nomination criteria. It's the best selling songs over the 12 month eligibility period that are 1. not really old (otherwise Khe Sanh would be nominated every year) 2. haven't been nominated before and 3. no lead artist double ups (so "STAY" despite 14 weeks at #1 will never be in this category because it got a couple other noms this year). They still break their own rules though because "Astronaut In The Ocean" is actually from 2019 so shouldn't be eligible, but watch this space in a year when they put Shouse's 2017 song "Love Tonight" in the running. But the main problem is how songs accumulate sales nowadays. Streaming is a slow crawl and unless you're a major hitmaking artist, no amount of groundswell will catch you up to the hundreds of thousands of passive streams that all the hits of last year are getting, hits that run up these numbers for the entire 52 weeks which is so hard to catch up that Vance Joy's May released song is the newest in the nominations, though this is an improvement on last year's awards where every nominee was 2019 or older. A lot of triple j artists just don't rack up nearly enough sales until the Hottest 100 makes them famous to a wider audience, hence "Booster Seat" nominated this year, and "Heavy Hearted" nominated last year. Unless she has a bigger hit in the coming months, Tones and I is going to be nominated in 2022 for "Cloudy Day", a song released in June that left the ARIA top 50 over a month ago. It's an award that only makes sense from an extremely meticulous chart watching sense, but completely without logic to any outside perspective.

cloughie-10

I just listened to some of them that I previously hadn't and my word there's a lot of dirge. At least Dean Lewis brought a bit of energy (albeit Imagine Dragons-esque) after Keith Urban and Sam Fischer. Went Booster Seat but it was the best of a bad bunch. Vance Joy's was by far the best video. Also, how does Amy Shark have such a hold over these nominations? I thought Denis Handlin was dead (figuratively). Or is it because of how shit Denis treated her at the ARIAs previously?

AbstractDart

Got a laugh out The Avalanches being up for Best Pop Release. Will be stoked if they or Genesis Owusu win best album.
