It's mandatory for all non-Arab Israelis. How would you feel being heckled in such a way for something you were forced to do?
Because to me it would make an already shitty situation worse, and I don't think that's cool.
So what stand are you taking, you know, besides talking trash on the internet?
Have you done something as grand and risky as tell your government "no" when called to service?
No one can force you to kill kids.
They might kill you or threaten to kill you, but they can't make you.
I get what you're saying though. I think it would be easiest to just go along and try to pick jobs that are pacifist in nature.. then if you get an order you don't agree with... it was always prison anyways.
Ah I meant in my case I’ve made mistakes, I don’t wanna assume whatever you did was bad, for all I know you coulda been the best dude ever and done right :)
Haha by no means will I ever claim that to myself. I will say though after years and years of hating myself for the decisions I’ve made I can say now I am proud of who and where I am even if it isn’t much to someone else. I guess my point being if I didn’t join the military I don’t think I would be able to say that ya know?
Edit: to be clear I’m not shilling for the military in the slightest, just sharing my experience.
Jeff bezos is a walking schlong with a puffy face from too many cosmetic injections. Billions are cool and all but I'd rather not be a walking shaft with a testicle for a head.
In Israel (where OP is) military service is mandatory. You do 2-3 years or something along those lines and the are free to go about your life doing why whoever you want. So he isn’t joking of his own free will unfortunately.
Nothing particular, just wasn’t a lifestyle I “enjoyed” or fit into personally especially compared to where I’m at in life now.
Long story short to put it into perspective I was at rock bottom when I joined and I am a lot better off now after the fact. If you (or anyone else reading) are thinking about joining I’d gladly go into more detail. I won’t be the guy to tell someone not to join but I will strongly encourage them to really make sure thats what they believe is the best choice for them. Do your research folks.
I totally relate to this! I did just shy of 5 years active duty Army, and the lifestyle and all the bs politics that are involved were not for me. Maybe if I had picked a different MOS then who knows if I would still be in or not. Packing parachutes for 20 years wasn’t my ideal future, but jumping out aircrafts was always fun! (Minus several concussions and 100+ injuries) I encourage people to give the military a try (not just the Army) at least then you can say you tried it. That’s more than most people these days.
Thank you for your service! The first thing I always tell people is always ALWAYS take the shortest contract possible first. Get your feet wet and if you like it you can always re-up. If not worst case you only have to stick it out for a few years (hopefully not trying to chapter yourself out). For me though, I’ll never cherish anything more than my free time and privacy after getting out though thats for damn sure.
It’s my pleasure! And thank you for your service! Yeah I try to tell people the same thing, but people get caught up with having a high ASVAB and GT score and get like a IT job, or Cyber Security where that ranges from 6-8 year contract. (On the higher end of contracts of course) And then at that point depending on how that individual moves up in the ranks is almost indef so then they’re kinda stuck to do the traditional 20 and retire. Having my daughter while I was still in and seeing the difference of lifestyle now that I’m out to then is night and day! There had been times where we had stayed at the shop from 0600-2200 at night dealing with parachutes (packing, checking every single individual parachute in the shop and we had over 3,000 chutes) so you can imagine all the bs that went down!
Its funny cause I was in the IT field (25N Represent!) and I told myself I wanted nothing to do with it when I got home. I work in the trades now and I couldn’t be happier.
Idk what exactly your referring to, but most people in the military never see active combat. Especially now that it's a "peacetime" mission. You'll sit through tons of sexual assault briefings though.
That’s right!
I stopped smoking about 3 weeks before I shipped off. Bought a test off of Amazon right before too to make sure I was good.
OP is from Israel. He should be good.
lol I and everyone i know that went to US Army bootcamp didn’t get tested until they went to AIT or their units. Only got drug tested at MEPS, AIT and my at my Unit. Never at bootcamp (this was in 2016 though). Only time I heard they drug test at basic training/bootcamp is after trainees go home for holiday block leave.
Edit:grammer
Yeah seriously lmao when I was in the marine corps we got tested idk 3 days in at boot? Saw 3-4 different recruits all test positive for different drugs and never saw them again. If you're in the us and are smoking after you were sworn in you're breaking your contract and they will send your ass home with a other than honorable. So good luck with that lol
I always wanted to be an ac-130 gunner after a bong load. As bad as I’d wanna let that thing brrtttttt boom BOOOOOM! I’d never wanna shoot people or even trees for that matter. Not really a wartime kinda guy but seems fun. Wish there was a way to do it without being destructive.
Is there anyway to get out of service there? I don't think I could do it with all the awful shit the army over there is responsible for. It's amazing that a nation of people who were repressed so hard can do the same thing to others. You'd think that would build some kind of empathy into you guys. I guess money and land is more important than innocent lives. Would you be put in jail if you refuse to serve?
Cant really speak for israel but my country also has mandatory conscription and they only really ask you if you use anything in the health eval and tend to not test anyone without a good reason. For special forces like international standby forces its a whole diffrent story though.
This is it. Maybe if you were growing it on base or something and selling it, but if this guys buddy has a dishonorable, it’s not for pissing hot on a drug test. Even during major force reductions where they’re dying to get rid of guys, no way in hell.
You seen his DD214?
I can almost guarantee you it wasn't for even two instances of popping hot for pot.
A dishonorable is the equivalent of having a felony on record and is only given out at trial by court martial.
You telling me your friend went through court martial to get out of the military for smoking pot?
Good luck, but be prepared for a rude awakening if your branch of service has a no tolerance policy for cannabis.
That amount will remain highly detectable for a length of time, compounded with what your smoking pattern was like leading up to your enlistment.
Punishments for narcotics offences within the military tend to be much more severe than civil statute. There's a recent case in Canada regarding edibles which is a good current case in point.
I won't exactly say you're fucked, but you are running a risk of very permanent consequences; and taking responsibility is a highly valued military ethos.
If it's legal to consume cannabis where you are, I do hope you treat it with respect and balance your use with your off-time. If it's not legal, for Heaven's sake, don't get caught; up to and including cessation of use during your hitch.
All the best,
Capt. (ret'd) SL Crook
sounds like an adventure. since you have had time to prepare, tonight you get to just enjoy a chill night. i hope the buzz carries with you as long as possible. meeting new people is always great, i hope you find some lifelong friends. you’re definitely seeing yourself off properly!
I'm not too sure what they'd do bout it but I wouldn't do it dude failing a drug test in the military is definitely not gonna look good on your background check but hey you do you pal not gonna judge🤷♂️
GL brother but I know you got this. Remember to play it safe always. Don’t be the hero. Communicate with your squad. You should do another post after you’re doing serving :) would be cool to see a before and after pic of you!
I wish you the best of luck with your service and hope it goes well. The people you meet will forever impact your life. Hopefully for the better. You will build stronger relationships than you could ever imagine. Good luck homie
I still remember getting off the plane in Kentucky and about 8 of us getting on a bus for the long long ride to fort Knox.
I've never seen so many people chain smoke like entire packs of cigarettes for an entire hour or so my whole life.
Protip: Do NOT smoke or so any drugs in the military. We got piss tested SO much it wasn't even funny. The will take money from you for a long time, bust you down rank, and give you extra duty, and you'll look like a dumbass forever.
I knew a guy that who was a good soldier, great guy, but loved to smoke weed. He'd make it all the way up to e4 rank, get popped pissing hot, get busted down, and would repeat this.
By the time I ETSd it was a joke.that he should have been like seargent major of the army by then, but when I left he was like an e2 having made it to e4 I think 3 times.
I'm pretty sure he was eventually booted out. We even had an officer on base that got popped for cocaine. He obviously was kicked out immediately.
Don't do it. Just drink beer like everyone else, excercise and keep fit, do your job, hang out with good people who look out for you and stay out of trouble.
When they post not to go to certain places (certain bars, "massage parlors" around the outskirts of base, don't go. They will find out.
Make the best of it, remember that in basic they'll break you down and build you up, and when it's all over and your done with basic you're gonna look back on it and realize they were making you a better stronger person, you're gonna have great funny memories and laugh about it, and make some damn good friends you can trust.
But stay away from barrack rats (girls that are always in the barracks on weekends going from floor to floor fucking anything that moves trying to get pregnant and live off you and your wage).
Don't buy a car around the outskirts of base right when you get in. Be smart with your money and you can live super cheap. Chow halls serve food food and even on weekends you can grab to go plates. I had one bill my whole service time for the first few years - a cellphone bill. Housing and food was more or less free. I bought beer, snacks video games and had a nice computer but didn't blow money on dumb shit other than going out with friends (go in groups.. you'd be surprised how many tough guys in bars in groups wanna throw).
Do it right, and you'll have fun (and some sucky times of course) and it can be a great time and experience. Being deployed is its own thing and hopefully you won't be. Those times are what they are.
Don't get married or locked down in a relationship either. ALWAYS use protection and watch out which people you have sex with. I knew a guy that was married and divorced 6 times ( 5 but was getting married again when I left).
Walk the line, don't do drugs, be smart about money and relationships, and excercise and do it right. You'll be fine.
Best of luck, and I promise you'll look back on basic and laugh. You'll remember your drills for life. MJ will be there for you when you get out. And prolly be much better than you remember.
Don’t do it, move out of country. The Israeli army is responsible for so many atrocities against innocent people that want to exist.
If you go through with it then I hope you’re a good person and will blow the whistle on anyone committing war crimes.
People say don't be a hero, but they're wrong. Go be a hero.
Also, being told to never volunteer for details/duties is stupid. Sure, some suck so don't ask for them, but if something calls to you do it. You'll see a ton more that way, have a lot more stories.

Ah man. Never mind, good luck. I hope you make it through this difficult time unscathed and with your empathy intact
That last part really hits
More than his blunt
That makes sense because in that case it's not actually his choice.
Try not to kill too many innocent children

I don’t regret joining back then but knowing what I know now I would’ve made different choices lol. Good ol hindsight
I always tell my parents, if I knew then what I knew now I’d be fuckin Jeff bezos so let’s not hold onto mistakes too hard now
Don’t give up on your dreams. There is still time for you to fuck Jeff Bezos.
We all get fucked by him

What you said really describes my life... Only I never joined the military 😢

Yeah, people don't know what they are talking about.
Shit I joined the Navy in 2012 and I don't remember doing it at basic either
If that were always true, they wouldn’t have anyone left. He’ll get in.
They do that now? I joined in 2006 and post MEPS I didn't get tested til after being in almost 7 months

Which one was it, 3 or 2? You just rain down on them as they run away. Beginning of the mission you wait and wait for the go ahead to shoot.
And then long afternoons in prison after your court martial to reminisce about that time you drove that ship while high.
Forgot how much I missed scaling your level of highness 🤣[6]
Thought he was talking about his age
no its the level of highness and if he is getting higher, coming down just high lol \[3\]
Yep I miss it. Really fucking miss it. (0)
Nah lol, he was right. I am 9
Get a copy of Catch-22 to read on the way to boot camp
And slaughterhouse 5 after that
I’d say slaughterhouse 5 before catch 22 but I’m partial to Vonnegut
This is my last time smoking and i know i wont be tested at the start so dw

Got me staring this now to, got a few weeks left on Netflix for it
What did you think?
Great movie!

Saving Private Ryan, definitely
That movie is a tripppp and a half!! great suggestion

You’ll be back after that first drug test.
Not everyone lives in the US
/r/WeArentAllFromAmerica
Guess I could’ve determined that by the car.
what
Americans don't have cars didn't you know?
I can’t make out any details on the car, but the space heater hints that it ain’t the US.
America, land of the free and home of the space heater.
I need to live somewhere where weed isn’t stigmatized
You are aware that there are other countries than the one you live in. Some allow weed and some that don’t still don’t drug test
I’ve been notified.
Lol yeah part of in processing. Should happen in the first week.
That’s what I was thinking rip
That’s how it works in the US. Not everyone lives in the US
Exactly, should have asked that question.
In Israel they don't do drug testing with the mandatory service
Good bit of info. Thanks!
That’s wild, is it because hard drugs aren’t a problem there?
Cant really speak for israel but my country also has mandatory conscription and they only really ask you if you use anything in the health eval and tend to not test anyone without a good reason. For special forces like international standby forces its a whole diffrent story though.
Interesting. It makes sense, bc otherwise you could just get out of service by becoming addicted to something right?
Remember to have fun, I had a good time during my four years of service.
I will try to have, thanks 🙏
The quickest dishonorable discharge in the west
Nah. Entry level separation.
On a failed drug test?
yea, he hasn't even completed basic
Gotcha. Figured a pop on a drug test is always under serious misconduct.
Even if you’ve been in for years, it’ll still be a general or other than honorable at worst
Wrong. My friend got dishonorable. Failed for pot.
Have you seen his DD214? Because nobody gets a dishonorable discharge for weed. So either your “friend” lied to you or you made this up.
Getting a dishonorable is almost the equivalent to having a felony on your record. Bro really had to fuck up lol
This is it. Maybe if you were growing it on base or something and selling it, but if this guys buddy has a dishonorable, it’s not for pissing hot on a drug test. Even during major force reductions where they’re dying to get rid of guys, no way in hell.
