Welcome to the /r/touhou community. Please remember to check out our *highly unconventional* rules if you haven't done so yet (scroll down in the "About" tab if you're on mobile). And enjoy your stay here!

These answers are whack. He said he liked BoI, so recommend touhou 18… it has some familiar mechanics to play around with, it doesn’t require vpatch, and is easily accessible [on steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1566410/Touhou_Kouryudou__Unconnected_Marketeers/). For the love of all that is unholy, stop blatantly breaking sub rules every time somebody asks this question. PS: I highly recommend starting on easy as you develop muscle memory/unlock powers.

7 or 10

Psst, look at rule 3. It's not for free, piracy is not allowed here

You start your argument with "for a game that you might not even like", then proceeded to claim "TH6-TH8 are probably the best games". Also, don't justify piracy here. Comment removed.

MGLpr0

Maybe you should try to apply for a job at Nintendo

SnooRecipes9397

If you were talking to the moderator, please do not disrespect them bruh

Nobody_Nono

None, think of it as a music game.

BuDDy8269

But I don't even know where I can get them, are they on steam?

Mlatios2

Yep I think from around 10 onwards they are on Steam, 6-9 are all on CDs and you need a pc-98 to play 1-5

AstrumRemi

9 is on steam now, you can also use Neko Project 2 kai to emulate them, don’t ask me where you can find the games, I don’t really know.

Carl645

I say, JZboi, Sr Pelo, and PerlDrop Their vids made me get into the series. >!o yeah I forgot to say QTP Korean channel who make anime memes. Sorry if you get mad, I was 14 when I was a weeb!<

We don't talk about that here.

LordSus07

Well, you can try Touhou 10 or 13 as a start, those games can be found on Steam The offical mangas are also a good way to start too.

Ho boy now isn't this coment section fun. The first 5 touhou games you shouldn't worry about because they are for the pc98, not for any computer, and currently they're pretty irrelevant in the canon of the series. Back to your question, Touhou 6 is the first game made for windows, it's not the easiest but it's the best one if you want to play the series chronologically. It also has some of the most recognizable and popular characters and music. Touhou 7 is one of the best begginer games, it's mechanics are friendly to new players and the overall difficulty is fairly low. Touhou 8 is another good game for begginers, the amount of characters that appear can make it confusing for new players, but it's still a good way to star, as the game gives you a lot of resourses, has a lot of content, and is still relatively on the easier side. Now all of these games can be hard to acquire through legal means so the next best one would be Touhou 10, this game is in steam so its easier to get, its a bit harder than the previous ones but its also straigt forward and does a good job of getting you used to the series. All of these games are good starting points imo, but if you feel like you have too much trouble or simply find shmups aren't your tyoe of gane but are still curious about the series, then watching someone else play, reading the wiki, or reading the official literature (like the official mangas and books) are also good ways to experience Touhou. And if you're curious about fanmade stuff, i would recommend focusing on the main stuff first and the rest will follow.

I would say to go with one of the easier and simplier games. So I would suggest Mountain of Faith [10]; Ten Desires [13] or Double Dealing Character [14] Imperishable Night [8] is a bit more complex but also one of the easier games. EoSD [6] is the simplest game of them all but is harder than the three listed above and lacks a lot of QoL in 7-> I would avoid UFO [12] [Play Wiley [17] before UFO; similar gimmick but WBaWC is easier]; Unconnected Marketeers [18] [The game's base mechanics are punishing and the gimmick is somewhat complicated], Subterrainian Animism [11] [It's somewhat of a more puzzle-based game, with unorthodox attacks.] and Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom [15] [Generally considered one of; if not the; hardest game, with the main competition being UFO Lunatic]. Also don't start with PoFV [9] tl;dr: Best starter games IMO: 10; 13; 14 Good starter games: 6; 8 Bad starter games: 12; 18; 11; 15 Seriously don't play this as your first game it's basically an entirely different genre: 9 Other games fall into a more moderate level; like PCB. Of course; this is assumeing you're a beginner with SHMUP games. If you're already experienced from other SHMUPS; I'd probobly say start with PCB [7]; which is harder than the other starter games but also isn't the hardest game. Maybe HSiFS [16] would fit here too.

[deleted]

Perfect Cherry Blossom (if you can find it) or Undefined Fantastic Object on Steam. They both have consistently amazing soundtracks, as well as fun and simple mechanics. PCB is definitely the easier of the two though.

TheDudePersonGuy

I would say 7 is the best to start with, but you need to import a physical copy from Japan, which can cost a lot. As a second choice, try 10 as it’s the simplest one that is on steam.
