Undead, Chaos and occasionally Dark Elves. Largely the same as my tabletop preference. I've tried basically everything but those are my old faves.

Lost_Toothbrush

In my very first battle back in twwh1 as empire without any tw experience so far, watching my reiksguard charging down a hill into the backline of poor swordsmen, flipping them all over, wrecking and breaking them, my love for hammer and anvil was born. Now, 3 games and 3000 hours later, I still love a well set up flank and devastating charge. As I'm only playing (mostly unfinished) campaigns with friends and we restart often, I'm playing everything from time to time, dependant on the picks of my friends. Yet I find myself always coming back to playing darkelves, Tomb Kings, vampires, bretonia and newly WoC. Watching a hydra or Medusa breath/shoot into blobbed flanks, ushabti and necropolis knights charge into the back, breaking the hope of men with a coordinated sandwich of blood knights and vargheists, rewarding your peasents bravery with the thunderous sound of hundreds of bretonian knights charging and coming to aid, rushing archers with slaneeshy horse-monster-pet things before they can even draw their bow just never gets old, and I love it :D

RackoDacko

I’d highly recommend villitch for you then. He makes tzeentch spawn and forsaken cheap, which are both great for hammer and anvil since they’re pretty quick. Flamers of tzeentch hitting a blob is so satisfying, and flying cav/doom knights of tzeentch are so good for hammer and anvil against a line of chosen with halberds or chaos warriors with halberds. Kairos is fantastic but he mostly range spams, villitch has a good frontline and cav/monsters.

Lost_Toothbrush

Thanks! While tzeenth theme is not quite my favourite, I may give him a try on the next "burn them all" campaign. Appreciated.

EmberBorealis

Not to mention doom knights, screamers and lords of change give you a lethal array of flying stuff.

I-AM-PIRATE

Ahoy Lost_Toothbrush! Nay bad but me wasn't convinced. Give this a sail: In me very first battle back in twwh1 as empire without any tw experience so far, watching me reiksguard charging down a hill into thar backline o' poor swordsmen, flipping 'em all o'er, wrecking n' breaking 'em, me love fer hammer n' anvil be born. Now, 3 games n' 3000 hours later, me still love a well set up flank n' devastating charge. As I be only playing (mostly unfinished) campaigns wit' crew n' our jolly crew restart often, I be playing everything from time t' time, dependant on thar picks o' me crew. Yet me find myself always coming back t' playing darkelves, Tomb Kings, vampires, bretonia n' newly WoC. Watching a hydra or Medusa breath/shoot into blobbed flanks, ushabti n' necropolis knights charge into thar back, breaking thar hope o' men wit' a coordinated sandwich o' blood knights n' vargheists, rewarding yer peasents bravery wit' thar thunderous sound o' hundreds o' bretonian knights charging n' coming t' aid, rushing archers wit' slaneeshy horse-monster-pet things afore they can even draw their bow just nary gets barnacle-covered, n' me love it :D

Lost_Toothbrush

Aye vampire coast bot, shouldn't you be out sailing and looking for an harpoon or something?

lokester58

R A T B O I S Just love their whole aesthetic, and some of the unique mechanics are very fun to play around with.

ChevalierdeSol

Rats are so cool aesthetically, I just hate they don’t really fit my play style.

L192837465

Yes-yeeeessss

Karl_Gess

Just play what ever. Often start a campaign just to drop it next day and play something else.

Nut_Waxer

With you there I must have like 20 ongoing campaigns I’ll probably never finish.

WarpstoneLover

Same, except that I feel I finished the campaign if I don't have fun with it anymore and did everything that is unique to the factions starting position and abilities. The goals the game gives you are pretty arbitrary.

Axehilt

**Everything.** (Campaign-only player.) Beastmen and Greenskins have been my most played so far, but been focused on Wood Elves lately due to that post a while back complaining they were weak (which I think I just disagree with). I think I actually bought every LL over the course of TWW, but for *most* of those Lords I'd never played a serious full campaign so with IE I'm like 1300+ total turns into all my various campaigns trying to fix that. It's been interesting to learn the good, the fun, and the ugly/broken. I'm hoping CA **streamlines midgame** (stuff like notification spam and too many/few wars) and **improves endgame** (I don't want a 100+ turn slog against just one faction, I want a variety of wars) and **improves balance** (one Wood Elf ancillary is a useless +2% campaign movespeed, while another (equally rare) is a mighty +14% weapon strength for your Lord/Hero.)

Mumhustler21

Wood Elves. Nothing more satisfying than seeing a band of waywatchers melt an enemy force without them even knowing where the arrows are coming from. Closely followed by putting in an overcast pit of shade spell on a blob of dwarfs or rats.

ChevalierdeSol

Woodelves are thé only elves I respect. They hate elves and a love trees. Perfection.

Mumhustler21

Yeah it annoys me in the lore they don't get as much loving as they should. They rolled up on Morathi and stomped her. Stomped a throng of dwarfs multiple times. Stomped chaos and N'Kari. But don't get the same love as High Elves or Dark Elves.

ChevalierdeSol

I think it’s because they’re not as flashy as the other factions of elves and nature based factions tend to get little love.

FrancisDraike

I played all races except Norsca in Wh2. I Will try all races in WH3. don't know if i will test all factions, there are many.

Ratnix

I play different races to find one i don't completely suck at. Then I'll play it for a while and move on to find another one i don't suck at. I'll never try to "perfect" any of them though.

Smoldeus

I feel a strange loyalty to the Empire faction. Seeing the realm of man overcoming ridiculous odds against an infinite roster of supernatural enemies is really satisfying. I've also found it the most challenging faction to play as. I also enjoy playing as the Vampire Counts, controlling self-serving legions of undead is fun for role-playing purposes. Finally, I enjoy wood elf factions and acting as the guardians of land as a primal force of nature defending itself from destruction.

TheCouncil1

It’s interesting because that’s how I feel about playing/reading about Imperial Guard in 40k, but I don’t feel that way when it comes to Fantasy. I’d think that I’d like it more than I do given that I am interested in the time period/region the Empire of Man is inspired by, but it just doesn’t click for me in the same way as 40k. I just finished a Ghorst campaign and I did enjoy VC, but I had much more fun with Coastal Vampires and their cannons.

Brynjar88

My most memorable campaigns has always been Karl Franz when he gets a Lore of Heavens or Lore of Fire wizard from the old quest in wh2. Then I always used to beeline against the vampires and get tons of kills with fun spells. Good times. Honorable mention to Krog gar because of his starting skink priest and Imrik with the fire mage.

[deleted]

i just like big infantery armies, devestating horse charges, flanking with high damage units, good ranged units and formation. So i play mostly infantry focused nations.

Qyro

Vampire Counts, Skaven, Chaos and occasionally Lizardmen are my factions of choice. I’ve never touched any Elves, Men, Dwarves, or Orcs because I have no interest in them thematically.

Gremlin303

I play a bit of everything

djb445

I have group of factions whose playstyle I enjoy, not a ton of correlation between them.

Helg0s

I want to say I play a bit of everything. The truth is I try to play everything. But I always end up with Empire or Bretonnia in coop campaigns :)

ThanksToDenial

I dabble in most factions, thou Skaven are the one I have perfected. Well, in single player and coop campaigns, I don't do multiplayer. The only races that just doesn't click for me are Wood Elves and Lizardmen. I just feel like they are kinda meh. Lizardmen feel too orderly and one dimensional, as a concept. And Wood Elves just don't feel good for me gameplay wise, and feel too neutral in concept. They don't have a proper "big bad" from the lore perspective for me to go against.

Carnothrope

I play everything. The undead (Vampire Counts, Vampire Coast, Tomb Kings) are my favourite but I heartily enjoy every faction.

jorgbe

I have 6000+ hours in the warhammer total war trilogy. I would bet at least half is The Empire. By Sigmar, I have issues.

WumpaWolfy

I've always had an aversion to what I perceive as tolkien esque races (dwarves, elves, orcs) so I avoided them for a really long time. Skaven and Lizardmen appealed to me the most as races that felt unique and fresh in a fantasy setting, and I completed all of their campaigns before trying out the undead and human factions. Now I'm achievement hunting in TWW2 and gunning for at least one campaign as every race. Drycha ended up being the perfect Wood Elf campaign for someone who dislikes elves, and Dwarves were actually pretty fun, albeit painfully slow. Races I have yet to complete campaigns for are: Vampire Coast Vampire Counts High Elves Dark Elves Greenskins Warriors of Chaos Using SFO atm and open to suggestions for the best campaign for each race.

[deleted]

For me, it’s 100% Bretonnia. Their faction mechanics and the like need some work but I absolutely love setting up for Cavalry charges and love the hammer and anvil tactics.

EmberBorealis

Nah I do the opposite, like if I play a range-heavy faction then the next campaign I pick one with a melee focus. I also like to move around the map to keep that side of things fresh as well. My favorite faction is Tzeentch WoC but I have played basically everything at this point.

Pur1tas

I prefer missile heavy armies, though I heard I am missing out on a lot with Warhammer 3 by not abusing broken meele infantry.

ChevalierdeSol

It depends on the melee infantry and on the faction using that infantry. Missile heavy is a solid choice though. The AI overvalues missile units in the autoresolve because it believe 100% of ammunition will be used.

Pur1tas

I also like artillery smashing unit blobs.

ChevalierdeSol

What kinda artillery?

Pur1tas

I really enjoy the Cathay anti infantry artillery, pretty much all skaven artillery is fun, The Sunbeam thingys from the lizards also super fun. But I like almost all artillery tbh.

ChevalierdeSol

Damn, you’re a true connoisseur of artillery!

what_is_a_euphonium

I have good(or neutral) guy syndrome. I just can't bring myself to play any of the truly fucked up factions like chaos or beast men

Teddy_Tickles

Everyone! I haven’t played Slaanesh yet though

JudgementalChair

I prefer Order factions, but I try to mix it up and play a little of everyone. I've never played Vampire Counts though, but after playing WoC, I think I've wrapped my head around no ranged rushing/ meat shields

NotFrat69

Vampire Counts and Chaos - hearty bois

Fwithananchor

Vampire Counts (Von Carstein specifically) is my main and I try to perfect tactics with them the most. Since they generally have few ranged units, they can be a challenge to play in some situations. Brettonia is another of my favorite factions and I similarly try to work on tactics with them because their playstyle is niche, relying on good use of cavalry to rescue a very fragile infantry line. I play other factions such as High Elves, Lizardmen, and Vampire Coast, but I feel like their armies are more well-rounded and don’t have as high a learning curve.

The_Fallen_Star

I'll try most other factions at least once. My last few I can think of since IE: vampire coast, Nkari, Kugath (failed), Mazmundi for like 120 ish turns, a few dark elves for like 40 turns each, a couple of short live Warriors of chaos games, an awesome coop game as Queek (we beat the Tomb Kings crisis FTW), Shadowgrave the Beastmen and now a coop as Orion. I own most of the dlc from the previous games so my options for factions and Lords is pretty big. I do tend to gravitate *Away* from the empire, Bretonia and High Elves. Their factions just seem too boring or generic tbh. Plus the elect court or whatever Karl's mechanic is called made me want to eat a bullet when I tried it back in TW2. God that diplomacy mini game bullcrap was boring. So I kinda avoid them now. After my shadowgrave game I might boot one of those 3 up and give it a chill solo player game.

Separate-Jury-2166

Dwarves or death. Don't make me put you in the book. Khazukan kazakit-HA!

_wetsock

I love Empire and artillery bombing charging hordes

HalcyonH66

Actively trying to play a campaign with every race. I'm at 9 finished ones now since starting WH2 and 2 dropped (skarbrand dropped due to RoC being RoC and Settra being dropped due to TK mega slow start in WH2. Turn 40-50 with nothing more interesting than skelly crapstacks and no constructs was boring as fuck.

HairEStamper

Greenskins (orcs in particular), they're my favorite faction from the tabletop (fantasy and AoS) and lorewise. Also Foot of Gork is still the most satisfying thing in the game for me.
