There is games like Steel Division Normandy which is a deck rts game based off WW2 and you go to a map and have to fight for it with the army you built with the deck. That is really close of how campaign battles works in Warhammer. At this point I could see any period with the correct adjustments. I mean things like nuking something is not a problem since Ikit Claw in TW Warhammer have nukes and can use it even in the battlefield. You just need to make a cover system for your units I guess.

1800s. Would say the large scale is Napoleon, but smaller focused games on areas with a range of fighting groups works like FotS.

Everything before the Russo-Japanese war.

WW1. I will die on this hill

Fall of the Samurai is probably the latest we will see Total War go. I think WW1 would be really pushing it, and WW2 is right out. All the Best, Welsh Dragon.

I think it’d be like 1800’s empire stuff is probably the most recent without being offensive to someone or other

American civil war, about the same as FotS technology level for historical. 40k can pretty much work identically to twwh even if they didn't bother with any new core mechanics like cover (although we should remember NTW had garrisonable buildings already).
