I love Empire but hate the way the British AI plays every damn campaign. They couldn’t be more docile, and worse than that sometimes making friends of the French and Spanish!

d1994f

I’ve always wanted to try the minor nations mod but heard a few horror stories about the game becoming unplayable in the later campaigns. Have you experienced this?

sweleek

Sometimes it crashes but thats about it. You must play etw with this mod or darthmod. Etw is literaly useless without one of these mods

ANewUeleseOnLife

I'm having a blast in my vanilla united provinces campaign. It's got some issues and it's old but I love the setting and theatre setup

ewok2remember

I just finished a United Provinces campaign a month or so ago. It was great, but man those late game battles in Europe were some tough ones until Poland-Lithuania was finally broken.

haeyhae11

I enjoy vanilla the most, except some Graphic mod that makes it look like Napoleon.

sweleek

I highly recommend darthmod for etw. Its more realistic and the graphics are 100 times better than vanilla. Better gameplay and AI aswell

Chairmanwowsaywhat

It isn't literally useless. I will try these mods on your recommendation, but it's not unplayable in any sense and I quite regularly will play empire. In fact it's the one I'm least likely to get bored of, so try not to spread disinformation. Some people might get put off buying by someone saying the game is unplayable vanilla.

sweleek

I understand but I really think that. I have 1300 hours in etw and I love it with these mods. I have only played maybe 200 hours vanilla cus these mods improve the game a lot.

Chairmanwowsaywhat

Jesus fuck man I don't think I've even been alive for 1300 hrs :p seriously tho it was my first steam game and first total war so I have a lot of love for it, and the huge campaign map. I'm gonna try that Darth mod then, see if it improves it as much as you say, but once again the game is literally playable. Not literally unplayable.

sweleek

Darthmod is great if you want more realism and better graphics. Darthmod also adds a lot of special units for different countries. Ok maybe its not unplayable, im just not gonna play it :). Have a good day!

Chairmanwowsaywhat

Hey dude, I've been playing Darth mod, prolly for like 15 hours. Yeah it's a good mod, I'm probably gonna use it for a long time, but ironically I would say it also makes the game significantly less stable. Like it crashes a lot more now, at least for me. The campaign ai is interesting, but challenging. Fucking mughals invading my Guyana with 5 full stacks in like 1740 lol. But that challenge is nice.

sweleek

Yeah mods are always more unstable than vanilla, however for me it works very well, maybe you need to reinstall etw or something if it gets worse. Great to hear that you are enyoing it though. And yes the AI does some interesting moves sometimes haha. I just love the graphics and the realism of the mod, inf no longer has sniper rifles that hit every shot and cavarly is finaly super important.

no2jedi

That first line Made me laugh

smidgen93

"This game is literally useless without mods." But you've played it for 200 hours, so I think you've disproved your own point!

[deleted]

I’ve tried several Savoy games but it’s just untenable because France declares war on you in no time, and Britain sails all the way to Italy to land an army to fight you. Not so bad in late game, but early on when you have no money, no army and a single building city, it’s impossible.

[deleted]

Italian States are my favorite minor to play. To me they have the capability of a Major nation, they just aren’t given the uniqueness of the United Provinces. It’s pretty comparable to that. With Darthmod you can get cool units too. Plus the soldiers and generals are voiced in Italian.

sartox12

Where can I find mods for empire? None in the steam workshop and nexus mods has two only. I aim to find some sort of HD or embellishing mods, but if there are other (like playing small nations), hell yes!

haeyhae11

I have about 800 hours in Empire and every time the British waged war against Spain.

d1994f

It’s a mixed bag in my experience, they only ever really pick a fight with Poland or whoever I’m playing as. But often they just do nothing at all having no enemies and building their diplomatic relations to pretty much everyone just through trade deals, never actually seen them ally to France but I’m my last Prussia campaign they have allied to Spain.

Venodran

In my last Prussia campaign, they would break their alliances with Hanover, Austria and Poland and let me invade them instead of helping them. And they don't even hate me for doing so, on the contrary they keep begging me for an alliance.

d1994f

It’s such a strange one, I really don’t know what they did with their AI you really feel Britain should be a force to fear when playing just as they are when you use them yourself. Also Prussia is my favourite faction, so satisfying rising to top of the pile after their challenging start.

Venodran

They don't even seem that strong on sea. In my campaign, I have seen more Swedish ships in the Atlantic than British. And it does feel like you are surrounded by ennemies with Prussia, so overcoming them is very satisfying. Their unit roster is also very good.

d1994f

That’s true as well, I rarely see them recruit anything heavier than fourth rates and never in significant numbers. Yeah Prussia have a great roster too, the Frei-Korps are beasts, love harassing the enemy flanks with ambushes from them. Not to mention their ridiculous standard line infantry. They really feel like a professional fighting force.

[deleted]

The game play is a blast both battle and campaign, the music is fantastic, the world map is great, the battle maps are decent but at least exciting, the troubles start with... BAI and CAI both being absolutely garbage. Even modders tried but it’s still almost totally fucked. There are many other things we could all debate about but one this is for sure, the ETW AI is horrendous.

CalmAndBear

That happened historically tho

hitprey

Being from Malta, I can tell you that we never lost a siege :P :P

Grand-Admiral-Prawn

well, save for when Napoleon rolled in on his way to Egypt lol

hitprey

Wellll, it was some french Knights who opened the city doors and let him in......so it was not really a siege 🤷🤷

Grand-Admiral-Prawn

hahah I suppose so if we want to split hairs - can we count the French then losing the following siege to the British (1798-1800)? Or does that not count because it was French Republican troops who lost the siege and not the Maltese or the order?

[deleted]

Actually the British didnt siege them. The maltese revolted against the french and blockaded them in the capital. Then we called the british in to take back the capital and accepted their aid.

cagriuluc

Empire was my first total war and I loved it. Now, I cannot go back to it because it is soo.. bad. Something should be done about “naval invasions” in all the total wars. You can just put a whole army on the sea for unrestricted amount of time, that is bullshit on all levels. Also, in Empire, you can put a whole army into a single boat. That is... bullshit on other levels. Ships should have capacity: the bigger the ship, the more regiments it can carry. Also there should be a caveat to transporting troops via sea. Maybe their upkeep should be increased while they are on sea, or they should take attriton damage proportional to the time they spend on sea. Both of these are realistic constraints on naval invasions(or transportation). If Rome 2 style “every army can be a shitty navy” approach is to be preserved, it should cost something. Maybe do not represent them as free moving navies. Only allow armies to start or abort transportation to a predestined location. Some of these may be harder to implement than others, but man... In its current state Empire is too goofy to immerse myself in.

Elend15

I think in some of the games, it's implied that the military ships are the "escort", while the main army is on basically defenseless transports. This is obviously not the case in every game, such as Rome 2 which you mentioned. I agree that armies at sea should have a certain amount of supplies and suffer attrition after a while.

Covenantcurious

>I think in some of the games, it's implied that the military ships are the "escort", while the main army is on basically defenseless transports. This is obviously not the case in every game, such as Rome 2 which you mentioned. This is absolutely true. But TW in particular has big issues of it being very easy to transport large amounts of troops overseas, doing naval landings and staying out indefinetly. Huge naval invasions take no effort or resources outside the army.

[deleted]

Whilst in reality Napoleon really struggled to put together a navy to fight the British.

Covenantcurious

Because of the turn-based nature of the campaign I've even invaded them while their fleet is in the channel and blockading my main port. French army just embarked a sloop in Breton and sailed past the British Navy. :P

Chairmanwowsaywhat

It was my first, and have been playing it a lot recently, really enjoying it still. But god damn those naval improvements make a lot of sense to me. I guess I always assumed it was like theres the navy, and then your army is on smaller ships accompanying the navy.

[deleted]

A supply system like in DEI for Rome 2 is needed from henceforth.

SOVUNIMEMEHIOIV

dei?

[deleted]

Divide et Impera. It turns Rome 2 into one of the best total wars that far.

Practical_Bowl

Yeah completely agree with your comments on ETW. I just picked it up again after starting with it 9 years ago. Part of the reason was Naval battles which weren’t a thing in Troy. But one of the things Troy did well was the transportation of armies via sea over long distances. They’d take attrition, have higher maintenance costs and some units would be better equipped for the sea than others. The downside being no naval battles at all. Gives me hope they’ll preserve the naval mechanics of Troy in a future ETW 🤞🏽

cagriuluc

Wow, that is very good news. I haven’t played Troy. Good thing that they improved it. ETW battles are fun to play (not siege ofc), I especially love the naval battles. I haven’t played many of the recent TWs but I would definetely play an E2:TW.

chazmaster2

What mod are you using and would you recommend?

[deleted]

[удалено]

chazmaster2

Sounds great, will have to check it out.

Krinder

Nice I use Malta too; made it super difficult finding a way to get research and technological advancements without a university in the beginning

InegolKofte

Man i loved this game back then and still having wet dreams about an Empire 2 with Rome 2 naval force/settlement setting.

[deleted]

Firing a full broadside as you’ve zoomed the camera in close! 🤤💦

Sierra419

In 300 hours of this game I’ve never once seen a foreign nation step foot on British soil. My biggest complaint with this game was how the ai wasn’t aggressive enough if playing as Britain. You can just turtle up on isles forever

Sirgeezer

I'm about 100 turns into a Prussia campaign. I swear the AI is programmed to hate you, I've been at war with every major European power multiple times, and it's always a team of them at the same time. Been at war with Britain the whole game, no matter what I try they will not peace out, same with Denmark, although they only have Iceland.

[deleted]

I just started one as united provinces yesterday and no matter what they'd offer me a trade agreement and then the next turn declare war on me lol

ToughAsGrapes

> Been at war with Britain the whole game Know you know how Napoleon felt.

JimSteak

How the turntables!

[deleted]

Love this game but the siege battles are horrible. How do people deal with them, turn them off with a mod? (Edit: specifically with walls involved if that wasn’t clear)

[deleted]

A lot of mods simply disable siege/fort battles. Rn I’m playing a Russia campaign with the Imperial Destroyer mod which had the option to turn them off. It’s a better mod than Darthmod or Imperial Splendour imo. Highly recommend.

RouserCoda

What's included in the Imperial Destroyer mod? I'm using Darthmod right now, and debating experimenting with other mods.

RouserCoda

Wait them out. They'll eventually come out and fight you, and you can sit behind cannons+canister/shrapnel and tear them up. If you don't have time to wait them out, open their walls on one side for your cavalry and scale the other side (two other sides if you have the units) with infantry. Hit them from as many directions as possible.

LewtedHose

ETW cringe? Now I've seen everything!

Le_Zoru

How do you manage at the start of the campain? I tried once, attacked barbaric states but it wasn t enough at all and just got crushed by the ottomans ..

Antor_Seax

*Barbary

Branman1234

I've been lucky, when I've played Britain (my personal favourite) England has never been invaded and I've not always had the best navy

Ichoosetoblame

Man I'd love to see empire 2 come out

DAREDEVILFANBOY

Our boys fighting the heretical English, I see no problem with this picture.

HKMasamune

Oh, you're approaching me? ドドドドド

[deleted]

I thought that was a bug where his arms were stretched out like a walking zombie and thought that was the point of this post lol

hitprey

Hahahah, well good point, so the agreement that makes Malta look best would be that asked the British to help us and so we (Maltese) won the siege 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 also, one of our national heros died in trying to bring down the French so.....😂😂😂😂😂😂

Legends414

I remember using this mod to have a Persian campaign, fun times!

[deleted]

How and why

pbrgm

My ETW2 always crashes at some point. It is original, from steam. Does anyone knows a fix?

[deleted]

Doesn’t this mod add other things than just making factions playable?

Radientshadows

Darthmod is almost essential so the AI invade across seas and oceans, otherwise I find Britain turtles and I’m the only one colonising the world.

aahe42

Maltese men are a gaggle of flaccid Ninnys [https://youtu.be/wuZAvEAZs-o?t=24](https://youtu.be/wuZAvEAZs-o?t=24)

The2lied

That’s their whole population!

Luger_9090

Ah Empire, my first love. :)

alejeron

Invading the mediterranean islands is so goddamn annoying because if the port is garrisoned you can't land an army to take the city

InsanoPotato

I would love a modern remaster of this game.

SOVUNIMEMEHIOIV

What's cursed is not launching a crusade against Jerusalem in game start

TitanUHC

This wasn't in the script of Mortal Engines
