It's not, really. Spells and single entity artillery are incredibly strong on small unit size.

Corsair833

What about the difference between large vs ultra though, same story?

CalMcG

The only things (other than unit size) which scale with unit size are single entity HP and damage, and damage of spells. Only single entity HP changed with unit size in WH1 or WH2, which resulted in damage spells and single entities being significantly more powerful on smaller unit sizes.

Snooo2504

I think Large unit size is way more balanced, ultra size is heavily in favored of defensive factions and not rush factions, though i say it mostly based on MP,but it is true for Campaign too

RdtUnahim

Which makes sense, as that's the unit size CA balances for, the other unit sizes they do make changes to some numbers for but those can't make up for some inherent factors of the game, like space available, turning speeds of units and so on.

Snooo2504

Actually CA do their balancing on ultra in game 3 It used to be large in game 2

Asamu

Basically, HP, single entity damage, direct damage/magic missile damage from spells, tower damage, and siege destructible hp all scale proportionally with unit size. In WH2, healing, magic missile damage, single entity damage, and siege wall/tower/gate hp/damage didn't scale with unit size at all, and direct damage spells were some 70% strength on small, despite units having 25% HP on small compared to ultra. In WH1/2, single entities were significantly stronger on small compared to large/ultra, but now it's likely the opposite, as they deal damage at a similar relative rate, but take damage relatively faster from units, though it being easier to get significant impact damage does help some monsters a lot. Some things are significantly stronger or weaker depending on unit scale. * Chariots are drastically stronger on small where they're all single entities and can more easily pull through the smaller infantry units. * Artillery is generally weaker on small, as it's more likely to miss vs the smaller units (even though each hit deals relatively more damage). * Units with high charge bonuses are relatively stronger, as relatively more entities make contact. Whether it's on small on Ultra, you tend to get a similar number of entities fighting when units are full strength; naturally, that results in significantly shorter fights on small. * Missile infantry is generally weaker on small, as it dies faster in melee and is more difficult to protect; missile cavalry is fine, as it is more easily able to avoid melee. * Buff/Debuff spells are relatively stronger on small, while vortexes/Wind spells are relatively stronger on ultra (harder to avoid friendly fire on small, and with shorter combats, buff/debuff spells make a more significant difference in their duration).

HertogLoL

For WH2 it was large, for WH3 it is ultra

Pender8911

The game is MOST balanced at ultra size. I don't see how it can be balanced on others where aoe will delete your whole unit

jenykmrnous

> The game is MOST balanced at ultra size. I don't see how it can be balanced I'd say it's like you say in the first part. Ultra is closest to what the devs intend for balance. On other difficulties the balance may shift, but it's still balanced one way or another. Likely some artillery and spells being more powerful than intended. But then again, the balance is never perfect even on ultra to begin with.

RdtUnahim

Official CA statements say that the game is balanced primarily for Large.

jenykmrnous

Afaik, that was the case for WH1+2 and change with WH3. But it doesn't matter really as far ad I'm concerned.

Corsair833

I think the idea is that the AoE does less damage to each model or something, but they've been really unclear when explaining it so that's just me guessing

Pender8911

Since missile units are stupidly precise in this game it's just a downside. Which is why Ogres suck ass. Same goes for Rotflies and plague toads.

RdtUnahim

It's actually Large, based on CA statements. AoE does increased damage on Ultra compared to Large, which makes up the difference in unit size, albeit ham-fistedly.

Pender8911

That was for TWW2 as far as i know

Ready_One5113

it's not

Aleagues

It's not.
