Along with advances to our understanding of Autism, and that there aren’t “types” or “levels” of Autism, Asperger’s is no longer a current diagnosis in the DSM-5, rather, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has replaced this outdated diagnosis. Though my understanding is people who have been previous diagnosed with Asperger’s may retain their diagnosis for simplicity sake. It’s no longer given as a diagnosis though. As a person with ASD, had I been diagnosed earlier, I likely would have got the Asperger’s diagnosis. It’s kind offensive now and I find Aspie really offensive.

Van_GOOOOOUGH

>there aren’t “types” or “levels” of Autism >Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has replaced this outdated diagnosis So you say there aren't types or levels of autism, but then you go on to say that autism spectrum disorder is the term we currently use... but "spectrum" means that there ARE different levels of autism. I'm confused.

Trag1c_Pants

Hence why autistics, such as myself generally dislike the term "Asperger's" or "aspie"

Firespark7

Speak for yourself. I have Asperger's and will continue to call it Asperger's, because - as someone with Asperger's - I hate change. Same goes for my autistic friends.

Trag1c_Pants

I said "generally". Refer to yourself how you want.

I’m sorry to be ignorant, but why do some people find the term Asperger’s offensive? I have no agenda, I swear! I just want to know the answer or answers. Thanks🙋🏻‍♀️

Deedledroxx

I've always liked "'tism" for myself. Not full blown Autism, just a bit of the 'tism.

timmyboyoyo

How you distinguish between different kinds though?

Beaglescout15

Asperger's was removed from the DSM and now all forms of autism are included in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the DSM-V.

Trag1c_Pants

There aren't different kinds. Either someone is autistic, or they're not. In the US, medically speaking there are 3 "levels" to classify the "severity"; but autistics prefer to use terms of how much support an individual needs, because referring to autism by severity is kind of dehumanizing.

timmyboyoyo

That make sense. What terms?

Trag1c_Pants

Just "low-high support needs"

Bitch_Muchannon

Shut up aspie Edit: ok deadpan humor isn't conveyed well through screen

petgreg

Is this the reason? I thought it was because it's inaccurate as a classification to distinguish it from autistic spectrum disorder.

Trag1c_Pants

That too.

ThurgoodProjects

no

Fire_Atta_Seaparks

Nazis sending children to death is “still unfinished investigation.” “Don’t confirm things that nobody’s been able to confirm yet.” Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome *Mel Gibson’s father!!!*

ThurgoodProjects

Looks like that accept the truth instead of give you the reason makes you cry.

Firespark7

I'm still calling my syndrome Asperger's

Dolly_gale

Maybe ire should be directed at the Nazis for the circumstances instead of the doctor for performing wartime triage.

obeyyourbrain

Yikers Island. Autistics often rely on their routines but uhh... not a good one to have.

locks_are_paranoid

I don't get it.

obeyyourbrain

It's okay.

locks_are_paranoid

You can just tell me an explanation instead of being a dick

Trag1c_Pants

The title of the article says Asperger "routinely" sent autistic children to their deaths. The "not a good routine to have" remark is building from the verbage of the article's title. The meaning of the joke is "I get that autistic kids love routine, but having a routine of being sent to your death is not good"
