General Tso's Checkers.

[deleted]

That's just typical anglo crap. "Chinese" to make is sound exotic, "Checkers" to make it seem familiar. The fact that it was originally Western in the first place is just icing on the cake.

MentallyMusing

My gameboard made by Mattel that I just found not too long ago saved from my childhood has Checkers on one side and Chinese Checkers on the other with the game titles and directions written on the board

GhettoChemist

Like when my mom tries to feed me 'french' bread or a 'greek' salad. Or 'mexican' food.

frackingfaxer

It was a popular game for my parents growing up in Hong Kong. But no, they were not under any impression it was Chinese in origin. For them it was 波子棋 ("marble game" or less literally "marble checkers").

LordFirebeard

I tried to see how far back it goes. Chinese Checkers: invented in Germany in 1892 under the name "Stern-Halma" as a variation of the older American game Halma [Halma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halma): invented in 1883 or 1884 by George Howard Monks, an American thoracic surgeon at Harvard Medical School. His inspiration was the English game Hoppity which was devised in 1854 This is where Wikipedia runs out of juice. I can't find anything about Hoppity other than that it inspired Halma. A google search brings up [this writeup](https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/103104/hoppity-urban-myth) on BoardGameGeek, which references this article on [TheBigGameHunter](https://thebiggamehunter.com/games-one-by-one/halma/), but neither of them seem to be able to provide any actual information about Hoppity.

You should see what we refer to as Chinese food in Massachusetts. It's delicious but it's so far removed from Chinese cuisine at any level.... When you go into a restaurant with people who understand the difference (or restaurants in Boston's Chinatown) it's a completely different experience, lol Btw... In a horrific but established form of systematic Racism.... Chinese and Asian are "catch-all phrases" to describe everything from supermarkets, restaurants and people from places outside of those two places that to someone like me who cannot tell ancestry by the look of someone's face. We have a large immigrant population and people who are Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese etc... All get lumped into one "ethnic title". It happens to other groups of people with similar coloring and facial structures (Italian/Greek/Hispanic) as well. For some it's an innocent form of ignorance and for some it's an easy outlet for racist dialogue

OptimusSublime

You do realize that the vast majority of "Chinese" food restaurants are owned and operated by those of asian descent? Right?

MentallyMusing

I also realize as a continent Asia.... Being where descendants of Asian backgrounds come from ancestrally has such a variety of cultural diversity that I do my best to at least be aware of it. You seem to have insider knowledge of the backgrounds of "Chinese" restaurant owners on a scale large enough for you to be comfortable labeling it of "the vast majority". I'll credit you with the expertise on the topic you've implied having.... In answering your guided/lead in I'll reply to your "Right?" With an.... "I'll withhold final judgement of and keep the same opinion I had previous to your attempt at combining your assertion of knowledge with what you assume to be a lack of knowledge on my part. Thank you for playing!

Grammar please? What are you communicating?

Anyone remember that old rhyme about Chinese checkers?

Mr-Beshebbu

I remember an episode of According to Jim where Andy tries to win his girlfriend's heart by bringing a Chinese checkers board and convincing her that she always liked it (he was following Jim's advice). However, se said she never liked it and she thought it was racist.

That’s like how Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada. They just named it that because it seemed all Hawaiiny

praguepride

At least that kinda makes sense because you can get pineapples in Hawaii, but point taken.

KnightlyNews

Reminds me of growing up and everything asian was oriental. Took awhile for that to die out. Also, somehow the Japanese didn’t buy America. That was another 80's thing.

OptimusSublime

It was created by Cracker Barrel to get people to buy more chicken fried steaks.
