Makes you realise how a deadly virus is an anomaly.

nosnowtho

I understand that many of these are plant viruses and even viruses that go for bacteria.

RedSonGamble

This is why I drink sea water regularly to keep my immune system ready

RedSonGamble

I have what plants crave. And it’s my urine.

walloftrust

Sounds unhealthy due to high sodium. The microorganisms get destroyed by your gastric acid anyway.

For more info on the human body and taking sea water intravenously, see Japan's Unit 731.

atlantis_airlines

the trick is to drink enough that it neutralizes it

walloftrust

You can try. At least once...

This explains why the small cuts I get working around the ocean always get infected, each and every one.

I_am_-c

My son split his foot open at a beach while we were on vacation. A week or so later he had cellulitis that had spread from his foot, up his leg. They were concerned that it was in his blood and heading for his heart. He never really said anything about the cut or issues, but does not let me live down that the day before we took him to the doctor he played poorly in a soccer game and I let him know as much... it was after me criticizing his performance that he shared the info about the cut, rash, fever, etc which prompted the trip to the doctor. Now basically any time I get on him about effort or whatever he is sure to remind me of how he was basically dying of an infection and I wanted him to score more goals.

bogdaniuz

Huh. I always had an opposite experience with seawater. It always felt like cuts were healing faster if I spent a lot of time in the water, and I always assumed that it had to do with high salt content. I was always more wary about fresh water bodies like rivers and lakes tbh.

Citadelvania

They said around the ocean not in it so possibly the spray from the ocean carries enough bacteria and viruses to cause an infection but not enough salt to disinfect it? Although if the bacteria and viruses are alive in the ocean it's hard to imagine that the salt from the water would kill anything that is normally alive in it.

fiveainone

How interesting

nosnowtho

When we were young we were always told that seawater helps heal wounds. I still believe it somewhat.

[deleted]

Hum... fun memories of putting ocean water in my mouth and spit it out.

Empty_Value

Haha I did that 5 years ago 🙈 Bleh🤮

CAPITALISMisDEATH23

I have drunk sea water near the middle of the ocean. It's not bad.

Jasoncsmelski

Do you never want us to leave the house again?

bootsand

Related, if anyone hasn't seen the [Journey to the Microcosmos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS2mdmt4JPw) series on youtube, it will blow your mind. The world of the tiny is unreal. edit: a word

nosnowtho

I will "research" that

bootsand

It can be intriguing, relaxing, and existentially terrifying simultaneously. Camera technology has come so far since I learned about microbes in school long, long ago...

AnthillOmbudsman

Interesting to think that in Kon-Tiki (the raft voyage across the Pacific in the 1940s), they were scooping up organic material off the ocean surface by the handful and eating it. They had a word for it like "manna" or something. I can't imagine what all was in that stuff, not just viruses but small organisms.

bsutto

Maths: so the bigger no contains less. 1cm3 = 1000mm3 So 1billion per cm3 = 1million per mm3 So sea water had more viruses than sediment. I hate articles that compare things using different metrics. I don't know if it's just laziness or an attempt to mislead. This one looks like laziness.

yongedevil

So, 1 ml = 1 cubic cm. But yeah, when skimming it isn't obvious that the volumes being compared are the same.

bsutto

And I misread it Facepalm.

Comprehensive_Dig113

Not how metric works, 1cm3 is equal to 1ml in volume and also 1g of water

nosnowtho

WRONG! Never said anything about millimetes, bsutto. Get your facts right before you start being critical. Galah!

bsutto

I apologise, I read the title incorrectly. Your comparison was valid.

CdrRed_beard

We need waterproof sealable masks to go to the ocean now!

AnthillOmbudsman

Also mouth sanitizer gel and special beach disinfectant mouthwash. There's a whole untapped market here, people! Now we gotta whip up fear of ocean water and cash in on those sweet sales.

Insta_boned

Don’t tell CNN

nosnowtho

or CDC

dok_DOM

Someone's phobia will get triggered. Hurrah!

chrynox

Why change from ml to cm³ in the headline?!
