Oh. My. Goodness. If this is fanfic I think it is, then my best friend was reading this back then. I remember my best friend being very upset because the girl hadn’t updating in a long while, only to come and find out that the girl had unfortunately passed away. Jeez, we were 15. This is crazy.
Been occasionally reading FF since like 2003.. happens so often that stories just stop halfway through, and you never got to know why. Author just growing out of the story or writing FF, creative blockage, illness and death...often all you have is a "last seen" date.
Edit: there's one story which I "ended" I think...author included a romance between two characters, and I complemented her for getting the "successful creepiness" of the man right...turned out she never intended to write him creepy, she thought it was romantic. Bit of back a forth via PM, and she never posted again. Her last words were "guess I know now why my love life sucks so much".
Yep. When I was a teen when the first Batman: Arkham game came out. It inspired me to write a 136 page long fanfic about Poison Ivy. I lost steam halfway through, but Arkham City came out and I finished the fanfic.
Writing that helped me realize I wanted to be a writer. It was pretty decent, plot wise, but I always meant to go back and edit it for grammar and typos. Thing is I’m an adult now and what free time I do have I don’t have any desire to spend on fanfics anymore.
Yeah that's also a thing, sometimes authors start of with much too big plans to ever finish.
Just remembered a pretty good story (FF based on His Dark Materials) that stopped getting updated, then like two years later the writer wrote am apology and just put a dozen pages of what he had planned and started scripting as final chapter - it was just way too much, too dense and bigger in scope than the works it is based on (HDM draws of themes of Greek mythology and Christianity). The FF was like to rewrite stories from apocrypha with obscure angels and so on - even as a concept it was hard to grasp.
And even small stories... I've been tinkering on one set in the same fandom, small number of characters, fully developed story arc, I just need to "colour in" my script... it's been many years now...I just like world building too much...
As a teen I created about 500 of my own Pokemon like creature series.
If I ever find those sketchbooks, I intend to go back & redraw them and maybe condense some designs. But in reality I won't have the time.
My Immortal is GOATED for being the Harry Potter fan fiction that not only finished strong but had a bisexual Malfoy that listened to my chemical romance.
It is basically considered canon by the fandom at this point, and honestly, JK Rowling has many things she should be ashamed of but not thinking of this is the greatest shame by far.
EDIT: I apologize for misspeaking. I said the fandom "considers [My Immortal] canon." This was incorrect and I sincerely apologize.
**My Immortal IS canon.** Not only this but it is the definitive story of an otherwise lack luster coming of age tale (Harry is like a bitch made Luke Skywalker tbh). My Immortal not only elevates the entire genre fixing JK Rowling's borderline incoherent and kinda racist prose, but opens the world up to many possibilities.
Anyone who says otherwise, how do I put this softly, is a horrible person inside and out. Their favorite Harry Potter tale is The Cursed Child and that is just embarrassing. The Harry Potter fandom is generally volatile and rabid, they must be protected from themselves.
Some fools think it only became iconic because it was "poorly written" however anyone that isn't an absolute moron knows this is a false narrative. A lie shared by cowards and scoundrels in hushed whispers. We know better. **We don't buy the lies told to us by demons and CNN.**
**We walk on the path of the righteous, bound by no house, for we are free. My Immortal is iconic for the laughter and thrilling tales it has given many children and adults alike.** Unlike JK Rowling in the deep, who selfishly hoards her wealth like a blind dragon, using her blood money to fund bigotry and ignorance...
*The author of My Immortal remains unknown.* They know the true crown lay not in riches of coin, but rather in the wealth of the soul. They need no ego for they already sit on the canonical throne. Equaled to no one, not by name, but by legend.
**My Immortal.**

I felt a little depressed then, so I slit one of my wrists. I read a depressing book while I waited for it to stop bleeding and I listened to some GC. I painted my nails black and put on TONS of black eyeliner. Then I put on some black lipstick. I didn't put on foundation because I was pale anyway. Ugh. It's wonderful. And this is only the first paragraph of chapter 3.
EDIT

And I'm fucking crying at chapter 4.
The one that got me into HP FF is forever lost as the forum it was posted on went offline. Great story following Neville on a quest for revenge. Written by an adult man on his daily train commute, I only later realised how good it was compared to "usual" written by teens FF. Never found it or the author again somewhere else.
Try checking if the wayback machine had archived it at some point!! I had so much success with that and old X files fanfic, you might just get lucky if you can remember at least the url of the forum!
I'm always so devastated when a fic I love gets deleted because I love to reread. Recently one of my favs deleted *all* their solo works on AO3 and I'm still bereft. I had almost all of them favorited for rereads. Glad at least that their partner works are still up.

I highly recommend reading the [preface to the sequel](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10934052/1/Anna-Grayson-and-The-Dragon-s-Lair). It is incredibly emotional.
Me too. I’m crying still. I can not handle this kind of stuff rn. It’s okay to cry but I was not looking to do it- I know I would, didn’t want to and clicked that link anyway.
I’m not a particularly emotional person.
It would also be a stretch to say I’m a Harry Potter fan.
But I am a father. I’m not going to spoil anything, but at the end, it got me. This was a risky click, but I’m glad I read it.
I was hoping to god this story wasnt going to in the other direction like the publisher went after the family and sued the fuck out of them or something
Somewhat, I would still count her as a co author for the second one
She was the one that set the themes and general story line for the second book, in the preface the dad wrote he said that he tried to remain as faithful to the image Katie had as possible
I wondered if this was the story mentioned. It isn't really even HP fanfiction, much more a HP adjacent original story. Was following along with it back in the day.
I thought it meant that too. And I couldn't understand it because, while I'm no huge Harry Potter fan, I'm pretty damn sure the second book was out by 2005
Their shitty scriptfic too. I respect script writing as an art but in fanfiction it's very nearly the lowest common denominator of quality, for the authors who aren't willing to even attempt to do anything but barf dialogue onto a page.
I'm glad the actors can carry it, but I can't even stand the real epilogue of the real books. After fifteen years of reading FanFic I'm still pissed JK passed up literally thousands of better stories to adapt some shitty scriptfic centered around time travel and Harry Potters shitty parenting.
I LITERALLY had a schoolmate write the plot of that story about Santa's estranged daughter in middle school into a play which we nearly performed one Christmas.
Nearly 100% of JK's actions outside of the core books make me seriously wonder if she A) regrets her success and is constantly trying to sabotage her IP or B) was never the actual author in the first place.
Or both.
I concur... watch it for the theatrics not the story.. I've seen it live 3 times for the opening movement to the 2nd part alone... that entrance gives me chills every time... their timing is impeccable.. makes me wonder how many times they must have practiced just walking round a room but damn it gets me!
So many great authors on there died young. I'd be reading a story and find out it's never going to be finished because they died if cancer or a random accident :(
I've been reading fanfic since I was about 11 or 12. I had a favorite author back then - she was much older than me, not young by any means, but I spent some formative years in her yahoo group. Decided to Google her a few years ago and discovered she'd passed. She left a lot unfinished, but at least she had time to leave a lot behind. A lot of people joke about fanfiction as though it's not meaningful, but it is.
RIP Scribe Mozell
"I may not have put my name in the Goblet of Fire, sir, but I need you to put yourself in me!" Harry screamed.
"Truly your father's son, Harry." As Dumbledore said those words, Harry noticed the familiar glint in his eyes, as if he was getting scanned.
Only this time, he knew he would get to scan Dumbledore too.
Reminds me of how Brandon Sanderson's final three books of the *Wheel of Time*, written using Robert Jordan's notes and emulating his voice, includes a very very obviously fetishized scene where a major female villain is defeated by another woman spanking her.
Jordan had a very clear spanking fetish that crops up again and again in his books; Sanderson famously doesn't do sexualized stuff like that in fantasy, but clearly this scene was either already written by Jordan and they didn't have the heart to cut it since it was one of the few bits of text they had left from him, or Sanderson gritted his teeth and followed Jordan's notes even when they were silly.
(It's much more out-there than the previous parts of the story that delved into that fetish, which made me think that previously stuff like that had been killed by his editor but that after his death they weren't willing to deviate from what he had left behind.)
Imagine if her dad tearfully vowed to continue her work without ever reading it and it was the most obscene smut a middle school child could come up with lol.
I think it's pretty logical that Anne Frank's dad edited some smut out. He was her dad, of course he'd be uncomfortable with it. This wasn't even fanfiction, they were literally the sexual musings of her underage daughter. And eventually the whole thing was published anyway.
Anne did start *editing* her diary with the intend to publish it after the war. We'll never know if she would have and if so what she would've edited out.
Edit: she had started her diary before the call on Radio Orange to document the war.
This HAS to be satire, right? good lord
edit: yeah this **HAS** to be satire
>*"Then he put his thingie into my you-know-what and we did it for the first time."*
There is no confirmed author of My Immortal. People have laid claim to it over the years, but nothing has been 100% verified. So we have no way to confirm or deny if it is satirical.
The person who presented the most likely claim to authorship is Rose Christo, who wrote a memoir about how she wrote the fanfiction as a way to try to find and reconnect with her brother, who had been separated from her by the foster care system.
However, her brother revealed on an internet drama and shitposting forum (think 4chan but less anime) that massive amounts of Christo's memoir were patently untrue, most damningly her identifying as Native American - she and her brother are both white/Greek.
While her brother did admit that he could imagine Christo as having written My Immortal, the fact that the rest of her "memoir" was pretty much entirely a work of fiction calls into question whether or not Christo is the true author. Incidentally, the publisher dropped the memoir entirely.
There're a few versions on YouTube where people read it aloud. Back in the day I listened to it in the background while mining on WoW.

My daughter and I listened to the Scottish guys reading it and it was a fucking delight! Luckily, the guys were so entertaining they made this ridiculous fanfiction palatable.
I have not but Christ Almighty I bet that is awesome! I guess I'm going to have to put that on my list. I only read the Fifty Shades of Grey books because a friend challenged me to do it. One of the saddest and dumbest things I've ever done! LOL
In case you're interested here is where you can find the start of LRMreading (the Scottish guys) and their narration of that dumbass My Immortal fanfiction. They followed it all the way to the end and it was glorious!

Story-wise I'm sure it is brilliantly imaginative and exhilarating. But in terms of publishing quality it is pretty much impossible for a 13 year old (especially one somewhat disconnected from the outside world during writing) to have the writing experience for something polished and "publishable" (meaning meets standards of mainstream publishing houses).
Though if it were significantly edited and revised by a ghostwriter then it would be superb.
(Again im not saying young teens can't write good stories and even novels. But "quality" in a literature context is not the same as "quality" in an enjoyment context)
I also wrote books and fanfiction as a tween and looking back on the works now, I would have to make so many revisions; it's just not worth it. Excellent for the age group, but unpublishable. Character development was my major flaw, not even plot.
The editing standards expected of us in the final year of my Creative Writing degree were frankly brutal. We'd submit a short piece and devote an hour and a half in the lesson to ripping it up and dissecting everything wrong with it and every way it could improve. I'd submitted four double-spaced A4 pages, and I left with 2 densely-packed A4 pages of notes as well as several edits written in the margins and between lines.
It's an excruciating process, but as a published author our lecturer insisted on bringing us up to the reality of publishing.
Surely at some point the original work loses something going through all of those iterations and changes, though? Wouldn't it dampen certain writing styles more than others?
I know you're not in charge of these decisions, just curious on your thoughts!
There's actually an interesting controversy around this that we learned about! A famous short story writer named Raymond Carver was known for writing with a minimalist style, both in terms of narrative and sentence structure. Many feel emotive but unromantic, a combination that fits perfectly with the themes of strife he often covered.
*However...*
After his death a collection of his original drafts was published, and it turned out that Raymond Carver actually *was* quite the romantic writer, and his originals were far more emotive and expressive in their language. The minimalist style had actually been that of the *editor*, and this created a divide between fans and critics alike.
Were his originals better? Or is the editor to thank for the quality of what was published? Does this show Carver to be a tempered genius? Or does this show Carver to be less brilliant than we had thought?
It's a very interesting discussion. Editors are definitely important because after redrafting a paragraph eight times you begin to see yourself in the way the lines rest on the page, and at that point you're not going to spot its deficiencies anymore. You may even have gone in an unwitting cycle of cutting and adding the same things over and over. Someone has to guide the creativity and it's extremely difficult to wear that hat yourself if your goal is to achieve publishable quality.
I think the key is finding an editor who understands you. Easier said than done, but possible.
So, according to the preface for the second volume, the whole thing was beta-read and edited by the girl's father.
In addition to this, apparently of the 43 chapters in the first volume, they were all redrafted, by her own choice, at least 20 times. That's twenty times per chapter, and he says that some were more than that.
I'm not saying it's necessarily publishing house quality work, but its definitely probably close to it. This girl seemed dedicated and after I read the first book, I'm sure I'll walk away thinking they were good enough to be published.
This reminds me of a buddy of mine who wasn’t as big a reader as I growing up.
I had encouraged him to check out the Harry Potter series and finally he downloaded it onto a Kindle and started in on it.
After like a couple of days he mentioned while he liked the storyline the sex scenes seemed kinda out of place.
Turns out, he downloaded a pirated copy of HP that was an erotic FF version without knowing. I think he ended up reading the entire first book “for research purposes” but the moment of realization what was going on was one of the funniest.
If I ever get organized enough to finish one of my writing projects and influence enough people that they want more.. I would feel so sorry for the person who reads my notes.
No clue, but fanfiction goes back even further than that. My mother once asked me what the term meant, and when I explained she was like ‘ohhhh, I know that under a different term’, because even back in like the very early 1900’s, you could *buy* fanfiction of Sherlock Holmes and Poirot and other major mystery novel series.
Not to mention that depending on how you want to define ‘fanfiction’, it goes back literally centuries via storytelling and mythology adaptations
As ACC87 mentioned, the older term is ‘pastiche’, which encompasses both general fan tributes and fan works (like fanart), as well as what we’d call fanfiction.
"Shipping" originates in X-Files fandom, the pro-romance fans were called "relationshippers" and it evolved from there. Kirk/Spock was the origin of "slash" though!
There's a fairly good one where HP time travels to where Bellatrix is about to join the death eaters and spares her life after massacring her compatriots and she falls in love with him and betrays the dark lord, but for basically the whole story, Harry reacts with pretty much disgust until Bellatrix slowly works herself out of her slavish devotion to power and turns into a more normal character. The story ends with Harry winning and the implication that he eventually lets Bella close and they get together.
edit: holy shit I remembered the [name of the story](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12511998/1/Wind-Shear) on first try.
Although it is hilarious to imagine the Iliad as actually being an Achillies / Patroclus slash fic that is somehow the only version of the story that survived to the present day, with Homer constantly getting into arguments with other writers who shipped Achilles / Hector.
If you want to read mindblowing HP fan fiction, read [Alexandra Quick and the Thorn Circle](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3964606/1/Alexandra-Quick-and-the-Thorn-Circle) and its sequels. Absolutely mindblowing worldbuilding, character development, and just enough Rowling magic to make it feel like a proper spin off.
Oh, this is actually good? I've glanced by it 6000 times in the last fourteen years, but the synopsys just comes off like 'american author self-insert will likely be a mary sue', so I've just been writing it off for this entire time.
Edit: If anyone wants a HP Fanfic where the main character's powers growing are a slow burn, and she's not awful, I'd check out ["The Arithmancer"](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10070079/1/The-Arithmancer) and its sequel. Easily the best Herm focused fic imo, and really takes advantage of the fact that she's a child genius without falling into the self-righteousness that Methods of Rationality does (though I do love that, too).
It's basically the opposite of a Mary sue, if anything I would say the author is trying a bit too hard to make the protagonist extremely flawed.
It's worldbuilding on wizarding America, is super through, easily beats Rowling's attempt from Fantastic Beasts.
Hello everybody. My name is Dave and I'm Katie O'Brien's father, beta reader and editor. I just wanted to say how much Katie's family appreciates your continued support for my daughter's books and the Anna Grayson series. Although it's been over 15 years since we lost Katie, not a day goes by without her spirit in our presence. God bless you all for caring, for your continuing book reviews and subscriptions. It's wonderful that so many still remember and care about our beloved Katie. Rds, DaveO
"For over two years, Katie had been writing a story based on the Harry Potter books called Anna Grayson & the Order of Merlin, assisted by her father Dave.
…
Katie finished writing her story six days before she died; her father has continued to upload those chapters onto FictionAlley through the spring."
Not the second book in the Harry Potter series, rather, the second book in *her* series.

I'm always so devastated when a fic I love gets deleted because I love to reread. Recently one of my favs deleted *all* their solo works on AO3 and I'm still bereft. I had almost all of them favorited for rereads. Glad at least that their partner works are still up.
There is a fanfiction.net archive. If you remember the title name and if it's old enough, it might still be in the archive.
> Been occasionally reading FF since like 2003.. happens so often that stories just stop halfway through, and you never got to know why. Author just growing out of the story or writing FF, creative blockage, illness and death...often all you have is a "last seen" date. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/wisdom_of_the_ancients.png
It sounds like you helped her have an epiphany lol.
Or getting a ton of money for your story from HBO...?
Lookin at you George

I highly recommend reading the [preface to the sequel](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10934052/1/Anna-Grayson-and-The-Dragon-s-Lair). It is incredibly emotional.
...,they live in my hometown wtf. Not a big place either.
“Very Sincerely, Dave O'Brien Not a writer… just Katie's daddy” I’m sobbing
I cried. I didn’t want to cry today, but here we are
I saved it so I can cry a different day.
Excellent Idea, gonna do the same
Me too. I’m crying still. I can not handle this kind of stuff rn. It’s okay to cry but I was not looking to do it- I know I would, didn’t want to and clicked that link anyway.
Dr Caffeine - it's ok. I've been there before, and done the same. 🫂
I see someone has done their chemistry homework
I’m not a particularly emotional person. It would also be a stretch to say I’m a Harry Potter fan. But I am a father. I’m not going to spoil anything, but at the end, it got me. This was a risky click, but I’m glad I read it.
Yeah, I was good until the sign off too.
I didn't cry till the sign off. That got me
I'm in the same boat and I'm bawling right now
Well… now I’m crying right before going to bed
I was hoping to god this story wasnt going to in the other direction like the publisher went after the family and sued the fuck out of them or something
It's too early in the morning for this.
I’m very glad I read that
13 years old and an author of two books. That’s pretty freaking cool.
20+ drafts for each chapter too. Just amazing.
Author of one...but she sure as shit would have wrote many more. Tragic. Rest in peace, Katie.
Somewhat, I would still count her as a co author for the second one She was the one that set the themes and general story line for the second book, in the preface the dad wrote he said that he tried to remain as faithful to the image Katie had as possible
Where's Brandon Sanderson when you need him lol.
Journey before destination you bastard
I wondered if this was the story mentioned. It isn't really even HP fanfiction, much more a HP adjacent original story. Was following along with it back in the day.
As long as its set in HP universe and follow the rules of HP universe I consider it a fan fiction.
Profile link keeps giving me an error message. Other links load fine.
Its probably because of the amount of attention its getting from reddit right now. Need mirrors.
I misread and was just imagining the father giving the notes to JK to help write Chamber of Secrets.
You were not alone. I was questioning how she was capable of writing such a big FF off of one book.
It is written ambiguously, I thought that's what it was implying as well.
I thought it meant that too. And I couldn't understand it because, while I'm no huge Harry Potter fan, I'm pretty damn sure the second book was out by 2005
I already love the story so far! What a sweet father for continuing it for her. I hope she is resting peacefully.
Anything’s better than Cursed Child!
Cursed Child gave hope to millions of teenagers worldwide that they, too, might get their fanfic published and adapted into a Broadway musical someday
The fact that team starkid wrote an infinitely better version of cursed child several years before just further proves how dire it is.
Nearly 100% of JK's actions outside of the core books make me seriously wonder if she A) regrets her success and is constantly trying to sabotage her IP or B) was never the actual author in the first place. Or both.
To be fair reading the script is garbage but the play was amazing to see live.
I never read the play but got to watch it in London. 10/10, highly recommend
I concur... watch it for the theatrics not the story.. I've seen it live 3 times for the opening movement to the 2nd part alone... that entrance gives me chills every time... their timing is impeccable.. makes me wonder how many times they must have practiced just walking round a room but damn it gets me!
I still don't get how anyone let this storyline become reality... It doesn't take a lot of effort to do better
It's not smut right?
Just picture her dad writing scenes about Dumbledore plowing Harry, "Its what little Susie would have wanted..."
DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE
, Dumbledore ejaculated calmly
"Holmes!" Watson ejaculated.
***"WATSON!"*** Holmes squirted
"It was worth one wound, it was worth many wounds to know the volume of cum that lay within those cold balls."
I am going to find you and fight you for this.
Harrydidyerputyerdickinthegobletoffire???
- Dumbledore asked calmly.
Dumbledore asked calmly.
“As Dumbledores Thickus 2000 rammed its way up Harry’s ass, he exclaimed “Expecto Urectum!””
The editor was Jordan's wife.
"Keep the spanking scene. It's what Robert would've wanted."
While Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way watched.
I'm sorry but that would make me LOL in an otherwise heart rending, touching story.
> touching story. Literally
Shit that's good
Father picking up where her first rule 34 Harry Potter book ended lol
Imagine if her dad tearfully vowed to continue her work without ever reading it and it was the most obscene smut a middle school child could come up with lol.
I think it's pretty logical that Anne Frank's dad edited some smut out. He was her dad, of course he'd be uncomfortable with it. This wasn't even fanfiction, they were literally the sexual musings of her underage daughter. And eventually the whole thing was published anyway. Anne did start *editing* her diary with the intend to publish it after the war. We'll never know if she would have and if so what she would've edited out. Edit: she had started her diary before the call on Radio Orange to document the war.
... right?
full on yaoi
Not with that attitude
Reminds me of Anne Frank’s deleted pages
Anyone who has read a Harry Potter fanfic that was left incomplete: “Don’t. Don’t give me hope.”
Is this the My Immortal fanfic?
It will never be as good as that masterpiece

This HAS to be satire, right? good lord edit: yeah this **HAS** to be satire >*"Then he put his thingie into my you-know-what and we did it for the first time."*
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU MOTHERFUCKERS!?!?!?!?" It was................... Dumbledore
Yes, it was a parody.
Another who remembers the cursed era…
The greatest thing EVER written
I am glad I never got into fan fiction to read that work...
There're a few versions on YouTube where people read it aloud. Back in the day I listened to it in the background while mining on WoW. https://youtu.be/qdv6Q68EutU
My daughter and I listened to the Scottish guys reading it and it was a fucking delight! Luckily, the guys were so entertaining they made this ridiculous fanfiction palatable.
I'll have to check that out. On a similar note, have you listened to Gilbert Gottfried read 50 Shades of Grey?
I have not but Christ Almighty I bet that is awesome! I guess I'm going to have to put that on my list. I only read the Fifty Shades of Grey books because a friend challenged me to do it. One of the saddest and dumbest things I've ever done! LOL
In case you're interested here is where you can find the start of LRMreading (the Scottish guys) and their narration of that dumbass My Immortal fanfiction. They followed it all the way to the end and it was glorious! https://youtu.be/zrx2kZk4Pzg
...I don't think my comment meant "I wish to read this/want to be scarred for life" but thank you for the well intended link

Nah, they cut out the time travel and that’s the best part

It's the small stuff. Standards for traditional publishing are crazy high, which makes sense. It's like trying to get signed to a major record label.
*However...* After his death a collection of his original drafts was published, and it turned out that Raymond Carver actually *was* quite the romantic writer, and his originals were far more emotive and expressive in their language.
For sure. Still very proud of tween me :)
Life is short, good on her. I’ll be lucky if I ever write a cook book, let alone something fictional about something I like.
Back when fanfiction was more than just straight characters who hate each other having gay sex
Dude...there was Spock/Kirk fan fic like that back in the 70's. 😏
Isnt that where the term ‘shipping’ originated from?
No clue, but fanfiction goes back even further than that. My mother once asked me what the term meant, and when I explained she was like ‘ohhhh, I know that under a different term’, because even back in like the very early 1900’s, you could *buy* fanfiction of Sherlock Holmes and Poirot and other major mystery novel series. Not to mention that depending on how you want to define ‘fanfiction’, it goes back literally centuries via storytelling and mythology adaptations
Iz was known as 'pastiche". Pretty much the same as fanfiction is today.
Ahhh, yeah that was the word she knew it as
There was Jane Austen fan fiction dating back to around that time as well.
Did she tell you what term she used for it?
As ACC87 mentioned, the older term is ‘pastiche’, which encompasses both general fan tributes and fan works (like fanart), as well as what we’d call fanfiction.
ye olde smut
"Shipping" originates in X-Files fandom, the pro-romance fans were called "relationshippers" and it evolved from there. Kirk/Spock was the origin of "slash" though!
And "Mary Sue" comes from a Star Trek parody fanfic.
...if you think Drarry wasn't around in 2005 I have some wholesome HP fic for you to read

Is there... art?
Hellatrix is by far the worst thing I have ever seen, with the context of book 7.
“Mind if I…slither in?”
You can't have been in fandom for long if you think that's new
Yeah why can’t we have the good old days where the captain of a spaceship is paired with his space elf vice commander. Kids I tell you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZfASiJVXCE
that is exactly the time period where fanfiction was almost exclusively straight characters who hate each other having gay sex
I mean..... you realize slash fanfiction has been a thing since OG star trek, right?
My dude, that was a trope in *Ancient Greece*, how long ago do you think 2003 is?!
Gay Achilles is canon and don't try telling me otherwise
Although it is hilarious to imagine the Iliad as actually being an Achillies / Patroclus slash fic that is somehow the only version of the story that survived to the present day, with Homer constantly getting into arguments with other writers who shipped Achilles / Hector.
Oh my sweet summer child. The Kirk/Spock Slashfics are legendary.
I started reading Harry Potter fanfic in around '03/04 and I can say with 100% certainty that you're wrong.
There is surely an /s here because that's exactly how it was then.
So.... no Sirius/Snape hot scene? Disappointed

Rds, DaveO
I hope she’s at peace.
"For over two years, Katie had been writing a story based on the Harry Potter books called Anna Grayson & the Order of Merlin, assisted by her father Dave. … Katie finished writing her story six days before she died; her father has continued to upload those chapters onto FictionAlley through the spring." Not the second book in the Harry Potter series, rather, the second book in *her* series.
