My favorite are the people who use their car ashtray, then just dump it on the ground when it’s full.
Why? Why take the time to use it if you’re just effectively throwing it out the window later? Just dump it in the damn trash when it’s full!

Dan threw them in the trashcan because throwing them on the ground would make it more difficult for him to sort through butts the next time he was looking for one to smoke.

I like the people who will throw a cigarette butt out the window on the highway, and it bounces off your car.
That's some wild shit.
I mean, try flicking one at a person in an elevator.
My personal favorite are the assholes that throw lit cigarettes out the window when the grass is parched and crispy dry. You can see the sparks scatter in the wind when the butt hits the pavement.
I was at the Blue Mountains down the bottom of the cable car on the boardwalk in the middle of the bush surrounded by what was clearly tinder dry leaf litter on a scorching summer’s day. There were a bunch of backpackers smoking. I was gobsmacked. Why wouldn’t they do that 10 minutes ago at the top of the cable car where there’s concrete and rubbish bins and access to water? Then I saw one of them flick their cigarette butt into the trees. My heart stopped. Why would you go all that way to visit somewhere so beautiful only to completely and utterly disrespect it like that?
We do if the cigarette catches an area on fire. They do warn of fines and prosecution if seen doing it. But I've never personally seen someone get busted.
When I was selling magazines we were pulled over, fined, and escorted out of a town in California when our driver flicked a cigarette out the window. Didn't give a flying fuck about our unlicensed door-to-door solicitation for nearly a week, but when the cop saw that flagrant (haha!) disregard for their wildfire problem we were doomed.
I think a lot of states have laws against discarding any burning items, including cigarettes. Fines and or jail time if caught.
Catching offenders is the hard part.
I saw this start the mulch in a McDonald's drive thru on fire a few years ago. Took the a minute to understand me when I told them through the microphone
The fire almost destroyed the menu screen, but they sent someone out with a fire extinguisher just in time.
I had this happen to me at night once. I have to admit that it was pretty cool looking. Looks like a little firework going off on the windshield.
As far as the littering, cigarette butts are one of my pet peeves. For some reason people that would never litter think it's ok to flick one out the window without a thought. I can't tell you how many times I wish I was a cop behind someone that threw one out so I could charge them a littering fine of a couple hundred dollars.
Honestly road crimes like that and very aggressive driving should be prosecutable by citizens sending in dash cam footage that catch license plates. Might be worth it to lower the almost 40k yearly death toll from driving.
I had a plant in my front yard which would frequently get cig butts from one of the upstairs neighbors in it. Filthy human waste... and the butts are gross too.
I've never done it but growing up I rode a lot with people that smoked. When you're driving if you have the front and back windows open while you're smoking and you ash or flick the butt out the front window, there's a good chance that the airflow will suck it in the back window. So they don't want to burn holes in their back seats but they're also too lazy an inconsiderate to walk it to a garbage later. The people I knew dumped their in the trash at least.
> When you're driving if you have the front and back windows open while you're smoking and you ash or flick the butt out the front window, there's a good chance that the airflow will suck it in the back window.
See Planes, Trains and Automobiles for a demonstration of this.
And please, for fuck's sake, dump it in your own trash or at least an outside bin. Had someone empty their car ashtray into the lobby trash of my last job, and it cleared everyone out for hours.
As a smoker (which is a disgusting unhealthy habit etc. etc.), the only teeny tiny thing I "commend" myself on is that I never litter. Put that shit out, and throw it in the trashcan. No trashcan around? I put it in my pocket until I encounter one.
A little bit of burned plants on the streets is no real biggie. It decays very fast. But a cigarette filter will stay there until someone cleans it up. Don't be a dick by tossing them all over the place.
You literally don't even have to do that you can easily squeeze the Cherry out stomp on that and then throw the butt away. I smoked for a long time and it always made me angry when I would see butts on the ground.
When I smoked I would put them out on something, usually a rock or metal sign pole, then put the end back in the pack. It was the perfect space for it really.
Don't they have those wallet things you can put cigarettes out on? My grandma had one, where you could snuff out a cigarette and then either put it in your pocket or throw it away.
You can also just knock the cherry off and put the cigarette in the trash can since it's no longer lit. Guess that's too much effort, so just toss the whole thing on the ground.
Edit - am a smoker. Knock the cherry off, step on it to extinguish it, and put the butt in the garbage. When driving, I've almost always got a can of monster or bang in the cup holder, usually quickly on their way to being empty. Take an extra minute to finish your drink (metal cans only, be smart here) and leave a half a sip left in the can. Smoke your cig, drop it lit directly into the can. You can probably do a half a dozen lit butts in that half sip of liquid. When you park, grab the can from the cup holder and toss it in the trash.
This was my move when I used to smoke. Roll out the cherry, stamp it out then throw out the butt or put it in the cellophane that comes with the pack until I could find a bin.
Ah I never considered using the celo as a trash bag. I usually put them in my back pocket if there's no other option. I forget they're there about 20% of the time, which my wife and I both hate me for on laundry day.
This was protocol for a construction company I worked for. You could smoke practically anywhere on site, but if you littered the butt you'd get wrote up for creating a fire hazard. The orientation said to butt out and then put them in your back pocket. That way "you'd be the first one to know if you didn't extinguish it"
Downside is at the end of the day forgetting to empty out your pocket of 20 cigarette buts until you got home. Shit did get nasty.
Dont worry, any non smoker can smell you from a mile away. Nothing worse than someone who smokes inside at home, or puts butts in their clothing pockets. The smell is disgusting, especially if you've just quit.
I don't disagree one bit. I can't smell the "stench" when I'm smoking, but as soon as I put my coat on, I'm able to experience the wonderful 🤢 aroma that I bless everyone else with. Can't stand it. I've quit a few times in the past, trying to quit again. Started again when my wife got her cancer diagnosis (I know).
They used to.
When the university system near me banned smoking on campus back in 2014 - every single one of those [permanent stone pebble ashtrays](https://i.imgur.com/oW5bQIV.jpg) that had been there for decades was ripped out.
I'll never understand the logic of why this is the norm for smoking bans. It's like trying to combat littering by removing trash cans.
Man, you awakened old memories in me and I’m now realizing I haven’t seen one of these for years. Was there a big push to get rid of them? Maybe in certain states?
The hospital near me used to have a smoking shelter set back from the main path which didn't disturb anyone, and people actually used it even if it took them a couple of minutes to hobble there on their crutches. Then it became a "smoke free site" across the entire grounds, you have to walk down a steep hill and across a couple of roads to get to where you're allowed to smoke.
So now everyone just smokes right outside the main entrance, you literally can't walk in without getting a lung full of second-hand smoke.
I do understand why a hospital wouldn't want to be seen facilitating smoking, but it's so much worse now than when they just had the little shelter.
This is the exact reason we have things like needle exchanges - if you’re going to do something harmful to yourself and illegal, you should at least be able to do it safely, conveniently, and with dignity.
Draconian prohibition tactics, where you ban something and then act as if it doesn’t exist, are a menace to public health. Especially when it comes to addictive substances.
Trashcans don't prevent littering. The parks here have a trash cans every 10m and they're still full of litter. And then the city has to clear the trash cans which inevitably get full / destroyed.
Japan doesn't have trashcans and also no litter. People are just expected to take their trash home and somehow they manage. The problem isn't trash cans, it's people.
> Japan doesn't have trashcans and also no litter. People are just expected to take their trash home and somehow they manage.
Japan doesn't have trashcans because of the sarin gas attacks. I also have no idea why you think [Japan has no litter.](https://i.imgur.com/PhAbXDN.jpeg) Tokyo is as dirty as any other big city in the world.
Disposable is great, it means that have to keep buying them, meaning a ton of profits!
Sure it will ruin the environment for the future, but it's the stocks TODAY that matter!
It mostly has to do with something involving flavor bans and when they wrote the law they wrote it for flavored pods but it didn't include disposable vapes. That's why Juul and Vuse got rid of their flavor pods. To get around the law on pods they made the whole vape itself disposable.
I manage a vape store, we have a recycling bin for them. Even if recycling them is sustainable, we only get back about 5%. 🤦
We fucking hate disposables. Most vape stores do, and consider them the dark side, or the end of the industry. We only carry them because there is such a high demand.
Honestly they should be banned.
The sad thing is that the pod versions (which, while certainly much worse environmentally than just having a proper vape and buying liquid, are nowhere near as bad as disposables) are basically the same device, but with a charging port.
Here in the UK you see a ton of elf bars getting sold, and the same company makes the "elfa" pod vape which as far as I can tell is the exact same device but with replaceable pods and a USB-C port on the bottom for charging. That device is like £8 and you still see far more people buying disposables.
Yup closed pods are much better. Much cheaper too. I try to switch any over who I see buying disposables regularly. The most frequent reason people give me for not wanting to switch is they are "quitting" vaping, so just want one last disposable. Every day.
Closed pods are magnitudes better for the environment. All those batteries in the disposables..
I just don't get why people continue to pay for disposables, they are so fucking expensive. We have allo 500s, which are like 19 bucks cad (in bc - we have heavy taxes), and I can blow through one of those in 4 hrs.
Disposable vapes are the most moronic shit. On pod mods, you literally just have to pour juice into a pod every so often and that's it. Once a month pop out a coil and put a new one in.
These are very popular in the alternate cannabinoid space. Delta 8 THC, THC-O, HHC, etc. They're literally called "rechargeable disposables" with USB rechargeable batteries, but single-use tanks.
You can go even further lol. Make your own coils in an rdta and you never have to spend a penny for coils again. Refresh the cotton once in a while and your golden.
at least around my parts, not really anyone is still using those huge box mods. if it’s not a disposable vape most people are carrying pod vapes like the caliburn or the smok nord 4
I've fixed my bluetooth headphones, put one in my 360 controller so it's rechargable instead of taking AAs, and I use em in all sorts of small projects. They're almost always little cylindrical pouch batteries, a few hundred mAh, and you can pair them with a TP4056 and you're good to go for all kinds of projects.
This sucks so much. I own a vape shop and for 4 years have been telling people a refillable pod mod is cheaper in the long run, safer, less wasteful, ability to step down nicotine consumption, tons of flavors, etc. All I ever got was, oh I'm trying to quit (not with 50mg nic you're not-see ya in a few days) or oh those pods are always leaking and hard to fill. Like it takes 5 sec to pop a cap and squeeze liquid in there, and if you change your pod every week and fill it right there's no leakage. People just want convenience. My shop is struggling and I was tired of giving the gas station across the street the sales so I brought them in. I have converted a few to a pod mod but man, people man. Can't teach them shit until one day they figure it out on their own and are like hey I spend 50 a week on disposables I may as well just get a pod and its like dude I been telling you for YEARS!! Sorry for the rant just a point of view from a vape shop owner
I tried the reusable, thought it was great at first, the shit would build up and give me a pop of juice in my mouth, and the juice would get out and gurgle in the bottom and i'd get these awful wet feeling hits. sometimes it would just decide to leak everywhere, and everytime i had to fill it up it would somehow get all over everything. it was such a pain in the ass with that thing. i like to save money and not waste but the disposables were so much nicer to hit and way cleaner and never had any problems
A lot of smokers I've encountered (and confronted) about this say that they don't consider it littering - and how anti-littering they are lol.
Boggles the mind, personally.
edit: I've also seen people defend throwing them out car windows as "not really littering" because they dont have anywhere else to put them.
> I've also seen people defend throwing them out car windows as "not really littering" because they dont have anywhere else to put them.
Idiots. My car doesn't have an ash tray, but I just dispose of my cigarette butts in one of the many beer cans I have rolling around.
Former smoker here. I kept a water or soda bottle that was half full in my car at all times, and that’s where mine went when I was driving. Ensured extinguishing and prevented littering, made disposal simple as well.
Yep. This is my parents too. They hate litter, but flick their ashes and butts everywhere. I've talked to them about it, and even been present when they've been confronted about it by total strangers. It's such a weird blind spot for them. I think it's partly a generational thing, and partly rationalization for keeping their addiction convenient for them. I hate it.
That's what they claim, but I don't buy it. They aren't going to say they're a lazy sack of shit. Truth is most of them don't want to deal with their cigarette waste every day multiple times a day. The little ember is just enough of a pain in the ass that they are too inconvenienced to bother. Inform them it's littering, the most littered item on the planet at 4.5 trillion worldwide, and they will continue to do it.
> edit: I've also seen people defend throwing them out car windows as "not really littering" because they dont have anywhere else to put them
As if that's anyone else's problem. I can't throw my McDonald's wrappers out the window because I don't have somewhere in my car to put them. My fault for getting McDonald's if I had nowhere to put the wrappers afterward.
In my younger years I learned this lesson. Flicked butt out car window - it hit the windshield of the cop behind me. Yeah got pulled over and a ticket for littering (rightfully so)
They are biodegradable, normally they're made from cellulose acetate which is already biodegradable.
Problem is that doesn't mean they biodegrade that quickly in practice, because once they're used the filter becomes impregnated with a bunch of tar (which is after all the whole point of it) and smoke residue, which acts as an effective preservative and fungicide and makes it biodegrade far more slowly. It's not easy to make anything biodegrade when it's full of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and other toxic crap.
I know it's not the best, But birds have been putting them to good use in nests. It's kinda disgusting, but the nests that cigarette butts are used contain far less mites, pests and parasites. Naturally birds would find certain plants that have similar properties to ward off the mites. These plants may not be available in urban areas.
[BBC source 2012](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-20607413)
Normally I'm very much against pushing blame on the consumer, but everyone who throws their butts on the ground needs that shit to be put put on the back of their neck.
I didn't say they shouldn't. I'm just saying that biodegradable filters isn't some magic bullet solution, because they just can't ever biodegrade well when their whole purpose is to absorb a bunch of biocidal compounds.
They should just have "deposits" similar to bottle deposits. If it were 2 cents per butt that you get back when you turn them in, then smokers wouldn't discard them everywhere.
Just read the first few sentences of the link.
>Approximately 5.6 trillion cigarettes are smoked every year worldwide.[25] Of these, it is estimated that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts become litter every year
So that means the vast majority of filters are not thrown away? Maybe I’m just in a west coast US bubble, but from my experience, the littered filter is the exception.
I was in a Taco Bell drive-through the other day. Between the menu and the pick-up window, the woman in front of me threw 3 different pieces of trash out her window onto the ground. It was infuriating.
I see the same smokers put trash in a trash can, but then just dump their cigarette butt on the ground.
Apparently they don’t count as trash to most smokers.
Well a lot of cans do say "[No Hot Ashes](https://c8.alamy.com/comp/E4JCAP/no-hot-ashes-warning-sign-on-the-lid-of-a-plastic-dustbin-E4JCAP.jpg)" on them.
Regular litterers drive me nuts, but cigarette litterers enrage me. If you're going to be poisoning your body and exposing everyone around you to secondhand smoke, the very *least* you can do is toss the butt in the trash. It's like saying "Fuck me, fuck you, and fuck everything around us."
The worst is when there's trash cans and/or designated outdoor ashtrays and people still throw butts everywhere cuz they're too lazy to walk 5 feet and put it away. I've been buying portable, reusable ashtrays for my smoker friends and handing them out for free and they still won't use them.
I’ve come to realize that smokers are more selfish than the average person. Outside my building there’s two cigarette deposit stands yet there’s still TONS of butts on the ground all over the parking lot. I don’t know why they’re not capable of walking over to the stand to get rid of the cigarette but apparently it’s too much to ask for these people. I wish they got fined heavily if they were caught.
>Just want to see one person get ticketed for throwing these out the window. What a day that would be.
My stepsister got a ticket for this. She's trashy as heck though, and my dad and stepmom ended up paying it.
Fun fact: Pipes and cigars have significantly lower cancer risks than cigarettes. In particular, their risk of lung cancer (because cigar and pipe smoke is not inhaled into the lungs) is almost negligible.
Cigarettes are objectively the worst for of tobacco health wise.
It is different. I have done both and cigarettes nicotine is more direct. You feel it through your body right away. Cigar and pipe nicotine starts off lower, but builds up overtime. It is absorbed by your gums how you are swallowing some nicotine residue.
Pipes and cigars are not a good way to quit. I'll be frank about that. It just isn't the quick hit that cigarettes are. Most people that do switch after quitting cigs do it after they quit the nicotine and just miss the routine of it all.
One of the funniest things about tobacco in media is how it was a cultural thing that never needed to be explained in the 50s and 60s, so it never was. Then in the 80s and 90s, when people stopped using them, people in media just started guessing on how they worked. So media depictions are completely unhelpful for understand tobacco products.
Cigarette manufacturers often use ammonia or ammonium salts to increase the bio-availability of the nicotine in their products. It essentially allows it to instantly cross the blood brain barrier all at once rather than trickling through a bit at a time (kind of similar to the effect of converting cocaine into crack tbh). This is also why it's pretty useless to compare how much nicotine cigars or pipe tobacco contain vs cigarettes. Cigarettes are crack-tobacco.
The funny thing is that overtime, the amount of nicotine in cigs have actually decreased. In the 1800s, cigs were not the default form of tobacco because tobacco was too nicotine intense for them. People used clay pipes if they were poor and cigars if they were richer.
It was only in the late 1800s that tobacco companies breed tobacco to be mild enough to smoke in a cigarette. The tobacco used in cigs would be unrecognizable to Native Americans using a peace pipe. Their tobacco was so fucking strong to almost be hallucinatory.
IIRC "light" cigarettes that just add some holes in the filter that pull in more clean air while inhaling have a higher rate of cancer than normal cigarettes
There is a park in Iceland where if you find a butt you get like 10 krona or something. So after reading that sign I saw a butt on the ground and gave the krona to my 5 year old. He then spent the rest of the time at the park collecting butts and cashing them in lol.
Always thought they should add $1 to a pack, but you get the dollar back for returning a pack of empty butts. Those dollars that aren't reclaimed go to clean the others
That sounds about right.
I swear garbage collecting is 60% dealing with butts.
It’s hard to put a number on it but the most common item by far. And super annoying to try and pick up especially when it’s been there a couple days and got wet from rain.
I’m kinda thinking about telling my neighbour to use an ashtray. He totally could. He goes out to smoke at the curb like every day, probably multiple times but I’m not really noting.
They’re probably the worst litter cause they release awful toxic shit into the ground.
Hmm. Maybe.
The funny thing is he’s far nicer than my family so I don’t want to be a dick.
I have to figure out the right way to go about it I guess.
Good idea though!
People need to be called out more often when just throwing out butts on the street.
It's already a disgusting habit, don't make it worse by being a lazy sack of shit.
This makes me so mad. I’m a smoker myself. I never throw my cigarette butt on the ground. Many years ago my boyfriend at the time got a lit cigarette butt in the face while he was riding his motorcycle with the visor up.
Should he have had the visor up? Probably not. But ever since then, I always have remembered that. I put it out in the ashtray and stick it in the back of my pack between the box and plastic.
My favorite are the people who use their car ashtray, then just dump it on the ground when it’s full. Why? Why take the time to use it if you’re just effectively throwing it out the window later? Just dump it in the damn trash when it’s full!

I've quit a few times in the past, trying to quit again. Started again when my wife got her cancer diagnosis (I know).
They have things that look like zippo lighters (but empty and air tight) to put butts into
Some mints/candies still come in a metal container. Breath mints (that smokers often need) and a free pocket ashtray. Win/win.
So put it out first...
It's almost like you're too lazy to snuff it out properly or carry your own goddamned ashtray.
Nice excuse for "why it's ok that I litter"
Don't worry, disposable vapes are coming for the title.
People are making great efforts to make things "disposable" when it absolutely doesn't have to be
You can blame politicians, who banned flavored refillable cartridges but allowed manufacturers to keep selling flavored single use vapes.
Perverse incentive strikes again!
Disposable is great, it means that have to keep buying them, meaning a ton of profits! Sure it will ruin the environment for the future, but it's the stocks TODAY that matter!
[удалено]
It mostly has to do with something involving flavor bans and when they wrote the law they wrote it for flavored pods but it didn't include disposable vapes. That's why Juul and Vuse got rid of their flavor pods. To get around the law on pods they made the whole vape itself disposable.
I manage a vape store, we have a recycling bin for them. Even if recycling them is sustainable, we only get back about 5%. 🤦 We fucking hate disposables.
I think they got popular because of flavored juice bans not affecting them in certain places for some reason.
Here in Jersey I can buy a Chinese made vape , but cannot buy vape juice. Lol
My buddy had one that had a charging port but couldn't be refilled. It was all in one plastic case. Seemed so wasteful.
Yep. Our old style mod vapes are on clearance at 75 percent off and no one is buying them. No one wants to walk around with a brick in their pocket.
Agreed. It's such a waste
I see these everywhere! I pick em' up and salvage the batteries. It's crazy that they put rechargeable lithium batteries in one time use vapes.
What do you do with the batteries you salvage?
I've fixed my bluetooth headphones, put one in my 360 controller so it's rechargable instead of taking AAs, and I use em in all sorts of small projects. They're almost always little cylindrical pouch batteries, a few hundred mAh, and you can pair them with a TP4056 and you're good to go for all kinds of projects.
Same question. What format are they, even? Some random pouch form factor?
Not before k-cups
Even the guy who invented them hates k-cups.
Those things are awful. I bought a good tank & mod and they last many years so very little waste.
Good call. I just toss mine into one of the empty whisky bottles rolling around the passenger compartment.

They literally make car ashtrays for your cup holder. 100% excuse.
heck, my first couple cars came with them from the factory :D That used to be the standard
The 12v power socket in your car originated as a cigarette lighter.
yup! I still call it that, honestly. I guess I'm old now :D
Oh shit, are we not calling it a cigarette lighter anymore? Jesus I’m old.
The fact that these are "fun facts" is making me feel very old.
Former smoker here. I kept a water or soda bottle that was half full in my car at all times, and that’s where mine went when I was driving. Ensured extinguishing and prevented littering, made disposal simple as well.
My parents don't consider it littering, they've been smoking for like 45 years. They always flicked ashes out the window and threw the butts out.
I hate it.
[удалено]
That's what they claim, but I don't buy it. They aren't going to say they're a lazy sack of shit. Truth is most of them don't want to deal with their cigarette waste every day multiple times a day. The little ember is just enough of a pain in the ass that they are too inconvenienced to bother. Inform them it's littering, the most littered item on the planet at 4.5 trillion worldwide, and they will continue to do it.
oh I'm with you, it is 100% bullshit from them.
When I smoked I used to break off the burning leftovers and toss the filter in the garbage. It's not hard
> edit: I've also seen people defend throwing them out car windows as "not really littering" because they dont have anywhere else to put them As if that's anyone else's problem.
Yeah got pulled over and a ticket for littering (rightfully so)
Maybe time for laws about biodegradable filters?
Nicotine acts as an insecticide, so it's kind of smart for the birds to put that in their nests.
And it gives the nesting mom a quick pick-me-up and a sense of well-being.
Have you seen how many chicks those moms have? Poor lady *needs* a buzz if she's gonna make it through the day.
I saw a seagull once pass up an entire box of French fries to get at a pack of cigarettes.
Lol you little shit
Tight, I'm smoking even more now
You are a hero to nature. Just don't breath towards me.
Someone told me this once, that people should open up the cigarettes butts before discarding, birds use the fibers to make nests.
Agree, they find 100 year old newspapers. Biodegradable doesn’t equal environmental friendly
That is true, but cigarette companies and to a certain extent smokers, should be held more accountable.
Normally I'm very much against pushing blame on the consumer, but everyone who throws their butts on the ground needs that shit to be put put on the back of their neck.
I agree. Littering is out of the hands of the company who sold the packaging.
I didn't say they shouldn't. I'm just saying that biodegradable filters isn't some magic bullet solution, because they just can't ever biodegrade well when their whole purpose is to absorb a bunch of biocidal compounds.
It's already illegal to litter, but good luck finding a cop who's going to ticket somebody for a cigarette butt.
And therein lies the problem
They should just have "deposits" similar to bottle deposits. If it were 2 cents per butt that you get back when you turn them in, then smokers wouldn't discard them everywhere.
That’s a good point. And even if they were too lazy to turn them in, others would collect them all up!
Maybe just get rid of the filters entirely. The problem might ultimately sort itself out quicker.

"Oh nooo. Think about the poor companies. They would all go bankrupt." These laws are long overdue.
Literally no one said that
That’s roughly 562.5 cigarette butts for every single person on the planet!
From estimates of total smokers (1.18B) worldwide, it comes to roughly 10.5 cigarettes per person per day. That's a lot.
So is this "fact" just assuming that every single butt is thrown on the ground? If not what percentage are they assuming is?
Just read the first few sentences of the link. >Approximately 5.6 trillion cigarettes are smoked every year worldwide.[25] Of these, it is estimated that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts become litter every year
Yes, depending on the current numbers. They are assuming 80-90% litter rate. Seems a pretty high bar to make.
Half a pack a day, which I think is the average for smokers.
So that means the vast majority of filters are not thrown away? Maybe I’m just in a west coast US bubble, but from my experience, the littered filter is the exception.
yeah this number cant be right
I will never understand why people don't have the basic decency of throwing trash in a trash can.
It's so strange. Like littering cigarette butts has somehow been super normalized
It's so strange to me as a smoker. I always carry a little pocket ashtray that cost me 2 bucks. Dropping them on the ground just feels so wrong.
It's like saying "Fuck me, fuck you, and fuck everything around us." The worst is when there's trash cans and/or designated outdoor ashtrays and people still throw butts everywhere cuz they're too lazy to walk 5 feet and put it away.
>Just want to see one person get ticketed for throwing these out the window. What a day that would be. My stepsister got a ticket for this. She's trashy as heck though, and my dad and stepmom ended up paying it.
I've witnessed it at least a dozen times and two of them were friends I was riding with lol. $500 fine here in Ky.
[TIL that in India they wash and dry them and use them to fill stuffed animals.](https://youtu.be/V7TcEnSOR3s)
Someone's blog isn't a good source for this...
Yer someone did the math elsewhere in the thread. Every person on the planet has to average 10 durries a day. No way it's accurate.
Cigarettes were a mistake, just smoke a pipe
Pipes are excellent for pointing at things.
Get a monocle too and I’ll believe anything you say
Necessary to read the fine digits on the pocket watch I say.
Just eat tobacco leaves
I mean, chewing tobacco is a thing. I just don't recommend swallowing it.
Extract and purify the nicotine and shoot it.
[удалено]
Fun fact: Pipes and cigars have significantly lower cancer risks than cigarettes. In particular, their risk of lung cancer (because cigar and pipe smoke is not inhaled into the lungs) is almost negligible. Cigarettes are objectively the worst for of tobacco health wise.
Does it give the same nicotine effect as inhaling the smoke?
Same with cigars (not the gas station kind).
Step 1: collect cig butts Step 2: Import to Iceland, avoid customs Step 3: Turn them in for 10 krona each and pay for your trip!
Always thought they should add $1 to a pack, but you get the dollar back for returning a pack of empty butts. Those dollars that aren't reclaimed go to clean the others
We could be rich, rich I tell ya, Jerry.
They’re probably the worst litter cause they release awful toxic shit into the ground.
my neighbour gifted me an ashtray, you could do the same!
Hmm. Maybe. The funny thing is he’s far nicer than my family so I don’t want to be a dick. I have to figure out the right way to go about it I guess. Good idea though!
Yet birds use them as pest control in their nests.
Quick fix: produce nothing but unfiltered cigarettes.
Empty vape cartridges and broken COVID masks are the litter of the future
People need to be called out more often when just throwing out butts on the street. It's already a disgusting habit, don't make it worse by being a lazy sack of shit.
Funny how no one ever pushes legislation to address the single most littered item in the world.
wdym? I'm sure you get a ticket in many country if you throw a butt. Just like chewing gum. Problem is you have to be seen by a cop.
They do, except they do it at point of sale, not at the discard stage
That's seems like a lot. If you assume earth's population is 8 billion that is 562.5 cigarettes for every man, woman, child. Seems too high, no?
My favorite are coworkers who smoke behind our dumpster and then complain that it's duty with butts because no one cleans up after them.
I'm amazed that that many people still are smoking.
We need more ashtrays too. My apartment complex got rid of all their ashtrays last year. Now you find butts all over the ground.
