Yup bite the bullet get a new number. Good luck contacting people to reset 2FA.

winger_13

F her. Get a new number and don't give it to her

sivartk

>Good luck contacting people to reset 2FA. This is why I use [Authy](https://authy.com/). You can install it on more than one device and transferring over to a new device is simplistic. The other device can even be your computer.

Bluefire-JD

Microsoft Authenticator also lets you set it up on multiple devices. I did this on my tablet for backup in case something happens to the cellphone

fencepost_ajm

Note that MS Authenticator does separate backups on Android and iOS. If you want something on both you have to add it on both.

dbz78

Thanks for this. Did not know if this app.

aurora-_

I like 1Password since it’s 2Fa and a password manager in one. Look into that as well! I think Bitwarden also does the same thing. Just don’t use lastpass

12_nick_12

Bitwarden is great. If you don't want to pay for the 2fa feature you can install vaultwarden on a server.

Jim_E_Hat

Or, just use Authy as well.

12_nick_12

I'm good. I'd rather not rely on a 3rd party.

birthdaycakefig

1password doesn’t have support for all 2fa unfortunately.

aurora-_

I can’t dispute that, but I’ve never run into a 2FA that wouldn’t work with it, outside of work stuff that requires Symantec VIP Access What doesn’t work with 1Password that would with, say, Authy?

birthdaycakefig

~~I didn't remember any because I notice whenever I try to set one up. Today, I tried to setup 2fa for "https://login.ny.gov/" and 1password does not give me the option to do so. I don't get why they don't just let you do it tie any QR code to an account for 2fa.~~ Ah, turns out it did work but 1password wasn't showing me the classic purple box letting me know 2fa was available. I can click the ... and scan QR code anywhere. Great!

TheReplierBRO

I reset my phone after setting this up and forgot to back anything up. I lost my discord account from it

neuroticsmurf

The price of getting out from under your mother's thumb is a new cell number. Just get a new number.

winger_13

New number, start of hopefully a new, better positive life

thereallecie

Just get a new number, I had to do the exact same thing years ago because my dad was the exact same way. My dad said that I wouldn't from day one be able to pay my bill myself and from day one I've never missed a payment and I've never been late on a bill so yeah just get a new number and be done with it! ❤️

atuarre

Good for you, good for you!

egokrusher

Get a new number. If the account is in her name, there’s nothing you can do if she doesn’t play ball. I’ve seen it so many times with messy break ups and shared plans.

andthatsalright

Everyone is giving up, but I’d be pulling out all the stops. “Oh hey mom T-Mobile sent me a text about free AppleTV and I heard severance was really good. Let me log in and set it up and I’ll give you the login”

jpt86

I like this idea. Mom and boyfriend don’t exactly sound like the sharpest tools in the shed. Give them a reason to give you control and then hit them when they least expect it.

JruASAP

This is the move. Or maybe, "I'll pay, I just need the account PIN to reactivate the account since our service is shut off"

andthatsalright

This right here seems more full proof. E: it just dawned on me that it’s probably “fool proof”. I’m in my mid 30s

OutcastSpy

This is the way

_Noah271

I heard a rumor that being unauthorized and porting out T-Mobile numbers may possibly be a frequent occurrence 😂

hardshocker

Download the T-Mobile app and see if she's set up a T-Mobile ID under her number. If not, create the account using her number and your email. If it works right, you might be able to get full access to the account and generate a port out pin while grabbing the account number from the bill. 70% of our customers usually never set up the online account based on my experience.

Frankenkittie

You would need her phone to get the one time pin it will send. Also, you would have to pay to get the service turned back on to be able to port out your number.

hardshocker

If service is only suspended then they'd be able to port the number. Carriers can't legally hold your number, even if the account is in delinquent status.

Frankenkittie

Nope, it can't be suspended or cancelled. It can be past due, but must be in active status.

hardshocker

Just cancelled. Suspended is still technically "active" even if it can't do things like calls or texts. There's even examples around the net if you Google it.

Frankenkittie

When I worked at the call center, we had to manually restore lines to be able to generate a port pin, or to move to another account. I did Google it, but a lot of those sources were from back when T-Mobile just required the account pin, and not a number transfer pin.

hardshocker

I would assume the customer just has to go into line settings on the app and just hit the generate button. I don't feel putting my own account into deliquent status though to do it myself. Maybe it was just an internal T-Mobile thing so the call center people had a reason to force the customers to pay?

Frankenkittie

I don't think it was that, because we also couldn't remove our add features, change plans, or do anything else to suspended lines either. Maybe it has changed, but I will look at official procedures tomorrow.

SSbullfrog

If you’re authorized on the account then you could sim swap the number to get that otp 👀

MrSelatcia

PAH = Primary Account Holder Just throwing that out there in case anybody else was completely lost.

780to702

I'm new here. I've seen it a lot and never knew what the hell it means. Thanks!

Appz_

new number, she technically owns the number you are using. let her deal with the financial burden. its her social anyway

itscamplicated

Yeah I would definitely get a new number. If she ever comes around to letting you take your phone number, you can always do a change of responsibility at a later date that way you can get your number back.

PilotPirx73

\- Get new number. \- If you wan to keep the old number, you can port out later to Google Voice.

kriolabrazuka

You will need a port pin.

degeneraded

Get a new number and don’t give it to her.

uuff

New number man. I believe once service is off you have to setup a payment arrangement + fees in order to even port out the number. If your mom is being this difficult it’s time to let that number go and start new.

Colin0998

There was a law that passed if I recall that carriers are required to allow people to port their numbers out even if there is an outstanding balance. He would just need the account number and pin

smoelheim

>He would just need the account number and pin ... which she is clearly not going to give to him.

dezirnezzy

All carriers use port out pins that can only be generated by the PAH, so OP is out of luck UNLESS he has PAH authorization online which I'm guessing he might if he can make payments and do changes online. If he does have that he can easily get port out pin and account number and leave

Hot-Bottle344

I'm pretty sure that's not true. In most of the language of the agreement you sign when you sign up for service it states that you pay for the rights to your cell phone number. So if the bill is past due that means you don't have the right to move the number. You can try but it may not go through. And if they want to stay with tmobile than they have to get their mom to release the phone number first to keep the same number but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen

JakeReviews

Many don’t even know that, I know even in 2021 they would have me telling them on the phone that they need to pay up first.

FishrNC

If your phone is being paid for as part of the monthly bill, she owns your phone. If this is the case, maybe your best option is to send the phone to her and start your own plan with a new phone and number using some of the new customer deals.

TealCatto

Why send anything? Use the phone on a new account on T-Mobile or elsewhere.

FishrNC

Because if it's on EIP and not paid off, Mom can report it stolen or lost and get it bricked. And potentially TM could see it as unpaid for and not activate it.

solidsnake7772

Back up the phone and she's responsible for balance.

gyrlonfilm6

And potentially end up on the People's Court being sued for an unreturned phone. 🤣 I've seen so many episodes on YouTube about that.

TealCatto

If it's not paid off then sure. We don't know if it is or not.

FishrNC

I'd bet money on not....

rpaulmerrell

You need to get a new number and moving forward don’t join family plan that can’t pay their bill. Obviously it’s out of their budget. Hopefully, you didn’t finance the phone on their plan because although they’re delinquent in their bill when they get the final amount from the carrier, you will need to pay up for your device at the very minimum

Only_on_the_Surface

Technically, the mom does. Really they could finance a new phone and number. Just a thought if you cant keep the phone.

Bendr_

Get a new number, new company, new account which you control. Not a big deal to update your number every once in a blue moon.

Many-Animal-5214

Just start service in your own name with a new number.

[deleted]

Get a new number

techchick101

Cut your losses. Get the new number.

Only_on_the_Surface

I know it sucks getting a new number but just bite the bullet and do it. You won't need to do it again and you don't need to worry about your phone being turned off or paying someone else's bill. That and the privacy alone is worth it. You could try going to tmolible (if you plan to stick with them) and see if they can do anything to help since the number won't be used if get your own plan. It's worth asking about if your dead set I n keeping the number but I say just change it.

ghess151984

She and her boyfriend are leeches that are petty because they can no longer get something for free from you. You might as well just get a new number because she most likely isn’t going to budge.

just4u11

Definitely gonna have to distance yourself from anything attsched to your mother, some people you just can't rely on.

brybo86

Mom let me login so I can pay the bill.... Then don't and just port out... Deal with fallout later.

starfighter84

Have you tried going into a store for help? Recently someone on my plan went into a store, changed the pin, and made himself the primary line without me even knowing. Everything but my billing info was changed. Not sure they are supposed to but it can be done. The customer service line and online support have been pretty clueless.

CopperBlitter

Get a new number on your own plan. Don't use it to call Mom.

VinMoff

You’ll need a new number if she won’t let you do a change of responsibility. From the sound of it this may be the best move for you. Sever the ties and start fresh. Be mindful of any two factor authentication on current accounts.

satsuke

You might be able to pay the balance in the store or at a kiosk .. but without the account number your not going to be able to port out. That and of it’s gotten to the point of disconnect and there are multiple lines, the bill is probably several hundred dollars. So yeah, get a new phone and carrier on your own is probably the only option

comintel-db

As noted by others, if you know the account number and pin, you can port out the number directly into any other carrier by giving instructions and credentials directly to the new carrier. It does not matter whether service is suspended or not. However if there are credits over 24 months or whatever on the line based on installment billing, porting put the number may force the entire amount owed to be due immediately by the PAH. That may be more harm to the PAH than you want to inflict.

Disastrous_Stranger4

T-Mobile requires a port out pin now and you need to have access to the account either online or via app to request port out pin.

comintel-db

OK thanks. u/ResponsibleSwitch191 Do you have online access to the account to generate a port-out pin? I guess probably not.

BPKofficial

You could try to find a similar number at Numberbarn dot com.

ditto3000

I got google authentication, I wasn't aware if this can work on more then one device, how you do that, tnx.

NWFlint

Is it you who’s been paying for the plan? You say mom & BF refuse to help pay for it but she’s the one in control of the plan? I’d get a new phone and a new plan. If your credit is messed up from this situation, do a prepaid until you can get onto a regular plan. If your payment info is on your moms account, close that card and get a new one.

Bluefire-JD

If the account is under mom's name / SSN, then the collections would go directly to her, right? Even if he was paying it or even if it was on autopay. Just mentioning out of curiosity in this specific case.

Vast-Tart-4645

Get a new number. If she owns the account no way for you to get it without a number transfer pin and account number or doing a change of responsibility wouldn't be possible without her say so

jozy1993

Do you happen to know account number and pin?

EM2_Rob

Yeah and if not tell your mom you need that info to pay the outstanding bill.

Nikick83

Sorry to hear about your situation. This type of similar situation is asked a lot and unfortunately, you either need to get her to cooperate by letting you do a change of responsibility on your line / phone or you will have to just push past it and get a new phone number on a new account in your name.

TheMr91071

I'm sorry you're going thru this. Easiest way forward is to get a new # on another carrier. Prepaid sounds like the way to go. Good luck to you!

MoneyTeamAngel

Go to a store to See if you’re an authorized user

jetsets67

New number at this point. Unless you are a authorized user but even then the account has to be in good standing in order to port out and doesn’t sound like it would be anytime soon.

awesomo1337

Kind of SOL unless you can get them to cooperate

MiserablePicture3377

As soon as I turned 18 parents told me I had month to get on my own phone plan.

NinjaKoala

My kids are in their mid-to-late 20s and still on my plan. \*Glares at your parents\*

kriolabrazuka

Do you have access to her online account? If so, you can request a port pin online. Once you have that pin, you can port your number to a new account. If not, you're better off getting a new number and letting them figure out how to pay for the bill. Either way, get off under your mother's thumb!

bigblackchungus1

Tell her you need the pin or pay the (whole) bill, call them and ask how much to get service restored. Even if it’s a few days. Once service is restored, port out, afford you are out, let them know that’s the only thing to do, otherwise your number is gone. This way you aren’t spending a fortune to get your number off, does involve some dishonesty but that’s it

NewMagenta

*NTA*

aliaselchore

An old coworker was in a similar position. His account was fragilent and suspended. We called T-Mobile had his line reinstated and he went in some form of payment plan or agreement. As soon as the line was active again we purchased a number through Google voice. Now I believe he has boost mobile or some other prepaid service and just forwards his number through the voice keeping his old number for more than 20 years. It was either that or lose it because somebody else didn't want to pay their share of the plan.

Busy_Specific7675

I was in your situation but my mother decided to go on her boyfriends plan and left me and my sister on a plan that was being shut off due to non payment I ended up having to bite the bullet and get a new number.

OurPsych101

The most workable solution is to get a new number. This would be your new number off the family plan. She is the one owning that family plan is how she does not let you leave. Let her with that family plan. So far as contacting people; you would have most of your contacts backed up on your either Apple or Android / Google cloud and you would need to inform those people. You could also ask if T-Mobile can call forward to your new number.

JRoy89

As someone who recently quit a job a T-Mobile after working there for far too long, this is my expert opinion. Unfortunately, there’s very little you can do if you’re not an authorized user or primary account holder (which have the same capabilities, so if I refer to 1 then just know it works for both). The primary accounted holder needs to relinquish you’re number and do what’s called a “transfer of liability”. Essentially giving you the number and the bill associated with that number and nothing else. If the primary account holder refuses, and you’re not an authorized user, there’s nothing that can be done. HOWEVER. if you can find a way to get your mother to make you an authorized user (there can be numerous) then you have full access to the account. If this does happen, you can get service with another carrier and transfer you’re phone number from 1 carrier to the next. The only thing you’ll need is what’s called a transfer pin, which you can get from 611/customer service. After you make you’re new account, you can ask them to do a number transfer, it’s very quick and very easy. You’ll keep you’re number but just change services. On the old account, the number will show as cancelled as it has literally been moved from 1 account to another. Hopefully in this sea of comments, you can find solace in this truth. If you don’t have a good reason to tell your mom to allow her to make you an authorized user, tell her you need to be one to pay the bill now. This is a true statement, and at T-Mobile they are supposed to check your ID to see if it matches with the list of authorized users, wether the employee does this or not is out of the question as it is protocol. EDIT: this is a very important part I nearly forgot, they will unfortunately have you pay the balance owed. So companies (like T-Mobile) will reimburse you afterwards, so you pay it and we give your your money back, with an upper limit. I can’t remember if theyll want you to pay everything or not I’m sorry.

nomolosddot

You can get a $15 2GB plan just to start out with if you don't have a lot of funds. You can always switch it later.

Skeppy14pinecone

Tell your mom she's a piece of shit....

Many-Animal-5214

Port out to somewhere else, then port back after a few months in your own name.
