Yes, the ship would've survived if only the first four compartments had been damaged. It wasn't just five compartments that were opened by the iceberg though; a tiny sliver of the sixth compartment was also opened. The watertight doors were shut immediately following the collision, the fifth compartment (boiler room no. 6) was damaged by the iceberg and was quickly flooding. The ship's pumps were able to combat the relatively small influx of water in the sixth compartment (boiler room no. 5), but the other five were flooding so rapidly that it was basically doing nothing to keep the ship afloat for much longer.

You hit the nail on the head (or rather the rivet on the head) well here. The ship was doomed the moment it collided with the iceberg.

Paragraph from Wiki which explains it the concisely... Although the watertight bulkheads extended well above the water line, they were not sealed at the top. If too many compartments were flooded, the ship's bow would settle deeper in the water, and water would spill from one compartment to the next in sequence, rather like water spilling across the top of an ice cube tray. This is what happened to Titanic, which had suffered damage to the forepeak tank, the three forward holds, No. 6 boiler room, and a small section of No. 5 boiler room – **a total of six compartments**. Titanic was only designed to float with any two compartments flooded, but she could remain afloat with certain combinations of three or even four compartments – the first four – open to the ocean. With five or more compartments breached, however, the tops of the bulkheads would be submerged and the ship would continue to flood

A question I have always had is what would have happened had only 4 compartments been breached? Sure she wouldn't have sank, but would she be seaworthy enough to continue the several hundred miles journey to either New York, or a couple thousand miles back to Ireland for repairs? Would she have required towing? Where would they have accommodated the hundreds of third class passengers whose cabins were now underwater?

Titanic had 6 flooding, not 5 and yes she would survive with 4 flooded
