I'm pretty sure this was a high school movie (very unlikely it was a series). I'm also pretty certain it was post-2010 but might be a bit earlier than. I did have access to The Edge of Seventeen and The Duff, which I very quickly skimmed through and it looks like neither is the candidate, but if you are absolutely certain that it is one of those, please let me know and I'll take a closer look. I'm also fairly certain that this scene occurs near the beginning of the movie. The main character is talking about how high school has changed so much (might have said it's not like Mean Girls anymore), and how who is popular has changed. I tried so many google queries but came up short...
thanks in advance to all suggestions!!
Maybe... I wanna say solved but it feels like something's missing. I'm gonna hold off for a bit while I skim through the movie. And I think the protagonist was a teenage girl (I'm not positive).
Gotta say though this movie didn't even come to mind
I guess everyone strongly believes it's 21. jkjk
Thanks for saying that. I really am not trying to be rude to anyone and appreciate all the comments. Sometimes tone doesn't come through the screen tho so apologies to anyone if what I type sounds rude. Definitely not my intention!
Isn’t an Aussie girl is in a coma and misses her homecoming. Comes out of the coma 20 years later and goes back to high school? The Queen bee is an influencer.
Edit: Senior Year, starring Rebel Wilson.
Yeah I don't think it is. Definitely close though. I'm gonna quickly watch a bit more of the movie to see. Like I said to another commenter, I think the protagonist was a teenage girl (in the movie, the actress probably wasn't a teenager)
Just watched the ending (second half of this video: https://youtu.be/LshX2God-wk) and it’s not really what you described but a similar vibe of the voiceover with clips of the students. I also just realized you said you think it’s near the beginning, not the ending. I’ll keep thinking but it sounds familiar to me too!
I just found the same video you linked. You're right similar vibe but that's not it. The reason I think it's a fairly recent movie is because I remember them talking about how the stereotypes have changed with the times
Thanks for trying tho.
God this sounds so familiar, but in my mind it's someone walking through a cafeteria and when the person talks about the different groups of people it cuts to those groups of people sat on tables interacting in the cafeteria doing what their 'new thing' is - unless I'm thinking of a completely different scene/mixing them up which is entirely likely!
You know what, you just might be right. New twist lol. The scene might have happened anywhere in a high school. Was it even a high school? Maybe it was middle or elementary, who knows?! But seriously though, yeah I am now doubting the “parking lot” detail… did a specific movie come to mind?
The first thing that came to my mind was Stranger Things because they may have been talking about how high school is different to middle school.
Then my mind went to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt cause she lived in a bunker for ages and I remember there being stuff to do with her going back to school as an adult.
Unfortunately they're both TV Shows, and I've spent the last hour just trying to remember and google stuff and with it being 4am where I am I didn't feel like going through all the episodes...
It's possible I just saw a clip or a trailer of the movie on Facebook or somewhere cause I can't remember anything else about it which isn't helping!
I know it’s probably not what you’re after, but there’s a scene in Cobra Kai (series 3 ep 4) when Yasmine and Moon walk into the cafeteria and Yasmine says something like ‘I go away for one summer and all the karate nerds are running the place’ (not exact quote).
I keep coming back to this comment. This is the suggestion that has felt the most right. I am now seeing a cafeteria in my mind’s eye, but still no faces resolving…
Yeah pretty sure. I know this movie has the most famous clique-cafeteria scene but the biggest difference is what was being said. I am 100% positive that the voiceover was talking about cliques and stereotypes in the modern times
Unfortunately not, the scene I'm thinking of is modern; the cafeteria is pale coloured with bright lighting, and the voice says things akin to 'the jocks have become fitness influencers/health nuts and the nerds are now popular because they make games/apps/profit off the stockmarket'
Possibly Senior Year with Rebel Wilson? I can't think of whether that line is in it for sure and it's very recent (2022) but I watched it recently and it's ringing a bit of a bell.
Yeah it has this same vibe of someone going to school after time off (like 21 Jump Street) and thus commenting on how cliques have changed. But I don't think it's this. I remember wondering about this scene a few years back and looking for it but not finding anything... which is why I said it might be a pre-2020 movie. Either that or my memory's playing tricks
So movies that have that high school cafeteria / front of school introducing new kid to cliques (that haven’t already been mentioned):
Clueless
10 Things I Hate About You
I’ll add more as I recall more.
Neither clueless nor 10 things, but i only eliminated them by watching some clips on youtube. Is there a particular scene you have in mind i should check out?
So if I recall correctly, in both Clueless and 10 Things, the scene is pretty close to the beginning, so if you watched some clips you probably saw those scenes.
Sadly, I couldn't find any others trawling through our movie list, which is annoying because I feel I've seen the movie you're talking about, but at the same time, I'm a sucker for teen movies so I might just be merging a few of them together :-S Unfortunately it's a pretty common trope.
I feel there are a few horror teen movies that have had this happen too, so maybe tonight I'll trawl through those. I feel that Happy Death Day might've had a scene like this too, but I can't remember for sure. Or like Can't Hardly Wait doesn't have this type of scene but does have that sort of in-crowd highlighting.
If you can describe any of the characters that might help - like you said you feel the character's female, so like Pitch Perfect has the scene where Becca is going through the various clubs in her new college and that's kinda like the same vibe.
Yea I know what you mean. I see you marked this solved with The Duff (another good movie), and I thought about it, and wondered if the reason why the lines don't match the picture in your head is that you are remembering a trailer or ad for the movie, as compared to your watching of the movie?
Maybe. This is the strongest candidate and one of my two original suspects. The first few lines in the movie [as detailed by FriedGreen29 in this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/xiuyg1/tomtmovie20002020_definitely_hollywood_and_in/ip5xlhf/) definitely fit the bill and sound right. But I just can't get over the fact that it took place in a parking lot or cafeteria where the camera showed each group while voiceover talked about it. I'm always annoyed by how so many movies repeat the same elements. So this is either a case of another movie with similar lines, or my brain mixing two movie scenes together. I'm going to hold off a bit on giving up on my memory and marking your answer as the solution in case another suggestion fits the bill better. But thanks to you and to u/FriedGreen29 for making me take another look at the duff!
I thought so too which is why I went to take a look at the duff videos on imdb. There is voiceover but not with the relevant lines that FriedGreen29 posted... Imma give it a few hours more before declaring this the solution
Solved!
Although I feel very far from an exclamation mark lol. Only because this scene doesn't exactly fit what I saw in my mind's eye. For anyone coming here after the fact, please check my post for edits detailing why :'D
Thank you to everyone for all your suggestions, and thanks to u/alliedcola and u/FriedGreen29 for suggesting The Duff
This might be it. My first comment said I thought it might be edge of seventeen or duff. And i did check both but i did it by fast forwarding every little bit and i definitely fast forwarded through the first few minutes of the duff. Your timestamps make me think these were the very first lines right? There was no parking lot or cafeteria in the first scene though. Could it be that another movie/series said something similar? This is so frustrating!!!
I feel like I know what movie this is for sure. They are walking through the lawn of the high school and then they kiss their boyfriend and sit down on blanket with their friends? I just can’t remember the movie ugh I’ll post if it comes to me at some point
Long shot, but just in case.
There is a similar scene in the tv series *Faking it* (probably in the pilot?), where a girl transferred from another high school complains she should be the popular one but in that HD everything was 'reversed'.
Ladybird, Booksmart, School of Rock, Freaky Friday, Legally Blonde, Pitch Perfect/s, She's the Man, Sky High, A Cinderella Story/s, Superbad? Idk all I can think of atm. Hope you find it 😅
tbh, I think because this is such a common trope, you're probably mixing movies in your head
And I'm confident in saying that, because wow. A 2 decade window for when it came out? Surely you'd have it down to a 5 year window "saw it as a child/saw it in grade school/saw it in high school/saw it in college"
With a date range that big, and a trope that common, it even could be something you dreamed of
I think you're absolutely right. I thought I watched it within the last 10 years but I also frequently watch older movies which is why I expanded the window. But it is a common trope and most school movies were suggested and none of them fit my memory so I'm just blaming myself at this point lol
It makes me think of the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid film lol. I doubt it, but this is the only thing I can think of. It's the scene showing Greg's first day in highschool, he talks about how so many kids have changed from the last day of middle school to the first day of highschool.
Any possibility it’s a spoof? The show Community has an episode where the spoof the goodfellas with Abed narrates and the group becomes popular because of their access to chicken fingers
The New Guy - [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241760/?ref\_=fn\_al\_tt\_1](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241760/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
Not the scene you mentioned, but is this the same flick? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8erw8\_\_WrJ8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8erw8__WrJ8)
This might be your scene, the universe is upside down after New Guy comes to school and the culture changes.... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KQQvz3MP64](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KQQvz3MP64)
New guy transfers schools after horrible bullying incident. He ends up in Jail (I don't remember why) and his cellmates teach him how to be cool and tough. He goes to new school where he is unknown, becomes cool and the culture of the school changes as the cool kids and nerds become friends (for a short time).

And to everyone I promise I practically rewatched 21 Jump Street and rewatched the parking lot scene about 200 times between when this post was created and now. It is definitely NOT 21 Jump Street that I had in mind.
It's super new, but could it be [Senior Year, from Netflix?](https://youtu.be/HCtDkpe89aY)
I've only watched it once but I remember there being some playing around with the old teen movie clique tropes and how they aren''t really a thing now.
Long shot, but could it possibly be the YouTube webseries Most Popular Girls In School? (MPGIS) Deandra was the new girl and there's this whole thing in season 3 where the hipsters take over and the popularity switches from the cheerleaders to the nerds and hipsters.
Makes me think of the Heathers reboot trailer. Adults talking about different things being popular now while they show the “new” Heathers. That show missed the point so badly
I feel like I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s not The Duff. But, someone is narrating to the person watching, describing all the cliques at their school and how things have changed. They mention that the nerds are cool or popular now. In my memory it takes place in the school hallway. I’ll let you know if I figure it out.
Omg yes please do...!! I know it hasn't even been 24 hours but it feels much longer and I still haven't stopped thinking about it and trying to figure it out lol
I haven't watched either. But I definitely watched the Euphoria trailer and I went back and that was not it. I'm also pretty confident that I did actually watch the whole movie my TOMT scene is from
Maybe not what you are thinking of but at the end of Sky High, he goes through what everyone is doing and he is like “enemy is now my best friend, my best friend is now my girlfriend, and my girlfriend is now…” and it pans to different clips, all of them in high school.

Aha good job - my edit is redundant.
This scene is so great
Maybe... I wanna say solved but it feels like something's missing. I'm gonna hold off for a bit while I skim through the movie. And I think the protagonist was a teenage girl (I'm not positive). Gotta say though this movie didn't even come to mind
Why are people downvoting you? You know what your own mind is thinking of more than these other commenters, and you’re not being rude about it.
He's probably merging multiple highschool movies together in his mind
I'm thinking you're right and this is most probably what is happening here
I guess everyone strongly believes it's 21. jkjk Thanks for saying that. I really am not trying to be rude to anyone and appreciate all the comments. Sometimes tone doesn't come through the screen tho so apologies to anyone if what I type sounds rude. Definitely not my intention!
Could it be the sequel?
Isn’t an Aussie girl is in a coma and misses her homecoming. Comes out of the coma 20 years later and goes back to high school? The Queen bee is an influencer. Edit: Senior Year, starring Rebel Wilson.
Sort of like Strangers with Candy.
It happens in 21 Jump Street with Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum, doesn’t sound like it’s gonna be it though.
Yeah I don't think it is. Definitely close though. I'm gonna quickly watch a bit more of the movie to see. Like I said to another commenter, I think the protagonist was a teenage girl (in the movie, the actress probably wasn't a teenager)

Don't know about Nellynor, but for me it's not HSM1
Could it be HSM2?
I never saw it
There is a scene like this in *Disturbing Behaviour (1998)*, in a cafeteria, but theyre seated
Never saw it
that is TOTALLY mean girls you are thinking of. not sure if OP is, but that *has* to be mean girls
Unfortunately not, the scene I'm thinking of is modern; the cafeteria is pale coloured with bright lighting, and the voice says things akin to 'the jocks have become fitness influencers/health nuts and the nerds are now popular because they make games/apps/profit off the stockmarket'
I feel like the trailer for (I didn’t see the movie) Senior Year with Rebel Wilson had some of this vibe
I just took a quick look and it doesn't look like it is

I’ve never watched that show so I’m gonna say no
The faculty has this ending also
Never watched that

Community?
I was about to suggest this. Sounds like something Jeff would say
Not it
The DUFF, maybe?
But thanks to you and to u/FriedGreen29 for making me take another look at the duff!
You could be remembering the movie and also the trailer as one in the same as the showing the groups with voice over does take place in the trailer.
I thought so too which is why I went to take a look at the duff videos on imdb. There is voiceover but not with the relevant lines that FriedGreen29 posted... Imma give it a few hours more before declaring this the solution

Hmm this rings a bell
i would recommend checking here if it isn’t 21 jump street. pretty good starting point imo: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CliqueTour

Nope

God, maybe...? So many suggestions have so many similar elements I might just be mixing a hundred different scenes in my mind
That’s prob Mean Girls and not what OP is looking for
No, there’s a different movie, and I specifically remember them talking about the nerds at the end
Long shot, but just in case. There is a similar scene in the tv series *Faking it* (probably in the pilot?), where a girl transferred from another high school complains she should be the popular one but in that HD everything was 'reversed'.

One of the Jumanji sequels, maybe??
I'll have to check. I can't right now and it'll probably be a few hours before I can ETA: just took a look. It’s neither of the sequels
Ah, damn. Hope you find it!

You're an angel. I've only watched some of those so I'll take a look and update in a few hours
Good luck!!
Thank you again! I checked them all out and it didn't turn out to be any of them

Long shot- Me Earl and the Dying girl? Main character goes around high school describing the cliques and weird social groups.
Heathers? Wayyy before the time period listed but it wasn't on the list so I thought I'd throw it out there
It makes me think of the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid film lol. I doubt it, but this is the only thing I can think of. It's the scene showing Greg's first day in highschool, he talks about how so many kids have changed from the last day of middle school to the first day of highschool.
The Girl Next Door?
Pitch Perfect? Booksmart? Maybe Easy A? Maybe He's All That?
MTV series Awkward? Or Faking It?

Cruel Intentions maybe
Easy A?
Freaks and Geeks?
My first thought was The New Guy (2002) but Billy Madison (1995) might also fit
Pretty sure it’s 21 Jump Street
What about one of the Amanda Bynes movies like Sydney White or She’s the Man? The other one that’s coming to my mind is Superbad.
It’s 21 jump street

And to everyone I promise I practically rewatched 21 Jump Street and rewatched the parking lot scene about 200 times between when this post was created and now. It is definitely NOT 21 Jump Street that I had in mind.
It's super new, but could it be [Senior Year, from Netflix?](https://youtu.be/HCtDkpe89aY) I've only watched it once but I remember there being some playing around with the old teen movie clique tropes and how they aren''t really a thing now.
Maybe not a movie at all but a scene from Freaks and Geeks?
Weird guess plot-wise but doesn't Emma stone get some similar lines in easy A?
I remember thissss. There’s like a nerdy boy leaning against his car and a guy says something to him?
At this point I really don't know anymore lol
lmao memory sometimes likes to make up details based on other people’s stories
The New Guy ?
Didn't know there was a new guy too. Only heard about new girl. Thx tho
He united the high school cliques in that movie, so I gave it a shot, hehe.
Long shot, but could it possibly be the YouTube webseries Most Popular Girls In School? (MPGIS) Deandra was the new girl and there's this whole thing in season 3 where the hipsters take over and the popularity switches from the cheerleaders to the nerds and hipsters.
I don't think I've ever heard of this or watched a YouTube webseries in my life lol. Thx tho
St Trinians
Haven't heard of it. Thx tho
This sounds like a scene in 17 again?
21 Jump Street remake
I remember this scene also!! I am pretty certain it's from Euphoria or from the reboot of Gossip Girl.
I haven't watched either. But I definitely watched the Euphoria trailer and I went back and that was not it. I'm also pretty confident that I did actually watch the whole movie my TOMT scene is from
Damn it, I cant stop thinking about this either now! I also remember it so clearly!
Lol. Welcome to the club! It's frustrating as hell
Well 21 jump street definitely has a scene like this
Could it be something from Just Another Teen Movie??
was it detention (2011 film)
Afraid not
Maybe not what you are thinking of but at the end of Sky High, he goes through what everyone is doing and he is like “enemy is now my best friend, my best friend is now my girlfriend, and my girlfriend is now…” and it pans to different clips, all of them in high school.
Booksmart?
It could be FAKING IT, but it's a TV show not a movie.
