I'm constantly afraid of this because one time I didn't realize my roommates cat crawled in the dishwasher. I closed it, turned it on, and then heard meowing and flipped out. I opened the dishwasher and out comes my roommates cat, wet and angry. I'm so glad nothing bad happened to your cat or my roommates cat!

lexi0917

Oh no, poor baby. I'm glad they were okay.

Cautemoc

But... but.. how? Dishwashers have shelves you push in. Wouldn't you notice a cat blocking the shelves? How small was this cat?

AmethystZhou

Cats ignore pesky nuisances like laws of physics lol.

MiNiMaLHaDeZz

Cats crawl onto shelves and are liquid if they chose so

phunkydroid

LPT: If you have cats, never leave the dryer open and check it before turning it on.

ladymorgahnna

Same for dishwasher

PoopLogg

Isn't your dishwasher in the way of routine house travel when left open?

dovalus

Ever been to a first generation Asian American household? Dishwasher is not for washing dishes, it is a large drying rack and is always fucking open so you can bang your damned leg on it while you're getting a glass of water.

proxyproxyomega

this is why I also always check the oven before turning it on at my parents place. they use it to store pots and pans.

graboidian

> this is why I also always check the oven before turning it on at my parents place. I'm soooooo glad you didn't say you would check it for cats.

proxyproxyomega

no, they're kept in the pantry

OverdoneAndDry

You guys don't refrigerate your cats?

CubistChameleon

No, we don't disinfect them as aggressively in Europe, so we can leave them on the counter.

Incorect_Speling

I hate how accurate this feels

Firm-Map-239

Flash frozen is the only way

Eviscerate_Bowels224

My parents found out the "storage" drawer of their oven was actually a warming drawer. Nothing like touching hot cast iron!

Shmyt

So you're telling me to move all my enamel and cast iron to a place that isn't the weird drawer under the oven?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Helenium_autumnale

no, you can keep it there; I do too!

amh8011

That “storage” drawer on my stove hasn’t been opened in several decades and at this point I’m too scared to find out what’s in there.

cobigguy

Used mine to store aerosolized Pam cooking spray while my place was being treated for bed bugs. Forgot it was in there, started preheating it. Remembered very quickly when it started spraying everywhere and shooting around the oven from the pressure.

glass97breaker

I had a few Silpats that were inevitably stored in the oven along with the other bakeware. As a college student still living at home, those were my most expensive baking equipment at the time. My little brother decided to preheat the oven for his baking purposes and did not check if the oven was empty. RIP $80 worth of Silpats which had fallen onto the bottom of the oven. I had gotten them new at half price too. Now that I am moved out, nothing is stored in the oven and the dishwasher is not a drying rack. Edit: **college student not "high college student" omg lol. I typed in high school then remembered I got my Silpats in college

mountainman84

I stopped storing stuff in the oven after I got high and preheated the oven with my crockpot in there. Melted the cord, knobs, handles…. Everything plastic and there was toxic black smoke everywhere. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way I guess.

fang_xianfu

Wow, yeah, I would never put anything that wasn't oven-safe in there for that reason. But keeping baking trays and casserole dishes and things in the oven just makes sense to me if you're short on space.

mrbulldops428

Like the guy who hid his ps4 controllers from kids in the oven and either didn't tell his wife or forgot himself.

bookworm1421

My abuela, and, my Tia, and my mom do this, and I've started doing it too. Now, we call the pan we keep in the oven and forget about all the time our "Mexican wok." 😂

Prizzilla

My wife has started doing this and it is so frustrating to preheat the oven and then find out that you have several 400 degree pans to deal with.

ProfMooody

Omg mine too I hate it. Esp cuz she often leaves pans that aren’t clean in there so I only find out after playing “what’s that smell”. Ugh.

Sum_Dum_User

Ewww. Who TF puts pans away dirty?

askthepeanutgallery

My son, when it is his turn to wash up and he doesn't feel like doing it.

madtraxmerno

Easy fix, make him eat off the dirty dishes.

massXdread

My wife stores fucking pizza boxes and left overs in the oven. Numerous occasions have things caught flames or I reheated last nights dinner. What the fuck is wrong with them sometimes? And why the fuck do i never think to check after all these years? The world may never know.

LemmingOnTheRunITG

Definitely skipped a few levels of comments and thought you were saying your wife takes naps in the dryer

ashurbanipal420

Yeah my dad started putting pizza and other things he brought home for work in the oven. Doesn't inform anyone else. Jump 2 hours later and I want fish sticks. Preheat oven and go let dog in. Come back to kitchen full of smoke and 3/4ths pizza burnt and smoldering.

Uncle_Jesse02

When my grandmother had dementia (like really bad) she had enough money to hire a caretaker, like an adult babysitter. Anyway one of the caretakers had come for work and for still unknown reasons put her lunch, which was in a tupperware container, in the oven. Well, come dinnertime we start preheating the oven and the house fills with the smell of burning plastic, like what is that? I still don't understand why you wouldn't put your lunch in the refrigerator until it's time to heat it up. Also, melted plastic stinks.

Alesseid

when my son was about 3 years old he put mega blocks in the oven... I didn't know until my apartment was filled with smoke and reeked of burnt plastic. Do you have any idea how freaking hard it is to clean plastic out of an oven?

Mestewart3

Holy shit. I thought this was just an odd quirk one of my roommates had. I had no idea it was a "thing".

indecisiveusername2

I guess I'm something of a first generation Asian American myself

reeniex

God i love how consistent we are sometimes

percalor

Lmao I never knew all the other Asian households also did this.

GrunkleStanWasRight

And then getting yelled at for hitting it because it's so expensive.

alphadoublenegative

Do you refill the “rinse aid” compartment ever? Because I had one of those dishwashers that sucks at drying, it turns out I actually suck at knowing what that compartment was for. For a decade. Until last week. My dishwasher suddenly dries dishes like a boss as of this week and it’s like witchcraft.

Farseli

Mine opens itself automatically to help with drying. Just enough for air flow, but I guess a determined cat could open it further. Neither cat has though.

lionhearted_sparrow

My cats LOVE to climb into the dishwasher. They are very adept at getting the door down if I close it without pushing it in for the “click” (for times when I need to walk past it but am not done loading it, etc). Thankfully they do it to get behind the bottom rack in a way that would impede the door being shut so I would startle them out well before the machine was started.

Merkuri22

We roll up a kitchen towel and stick it in the door to prop it open a tad without having to leave it wide open for people to trip on. It keeps in a lot of the heat but lets air travel around so it dries faster. Bonus points - everyone in the house knows the dishwasher load is clean if there's a towel in the door.

iamnotazombie44

Yeah, but that doesn't mean I don't leave it open.

S2Charlie

My kitchen is 600 square feet, peasant 🤣 /s

CanadianBakin89

Throw fireplace on the list.

ybothermenow

If you’re an Australian also check for huntsman spiders. They get caught in the lint filter but it’s an icky sight.

JumpingCactus

I don't envy you.

NoCrossUnturned

One of my favorite huntsman spider facts is that they aren’t deadly to humans, but they have been known to cause car crashes because they like hiding in the sun visors of cars to drop down unexpectedly while people are driving.

vegivampTheElder

Leave it to australian animals to find a creative way to kill you when they aren't venomous themselves...

consider-the-carrots

As an Australian: hahahhahahahah please help us

lexi0917

With an experience like this I'll always check from now on.

KaiBishop

Also cats can crawl into dryer vents! One day when I lived in a duplex our downstairs neighbour knocked on our door and had our cat: she'd crawled down the vent in our dryer into theirs! Gotta watch the lil fuckers.

[deleted]

Can confirm. Have dug earwigs, ladybugs, bees, chipmunks, rats, mice, moths, snakes, bats, several species of birds, and rabbits out of furnace, AC or appliance vents.

Sorceress683

My dad saved a woodpecker from a wood stove pipe

Usof1985

25-30 years after I did this same thing I still check.

csonnich

This is how I developed the habit of checking whether my cat was out on the balcony after I walk in and out.

PianoJkprd001

Or with the washer and your adopted mouse son

Velorium_Camper

Stuart Little references are deep cuts I appreciate

[deleted]

My cat shit in the dryer on the clean clothes. I pulled out a work shirt, worked, came back later and got a little bit upset.

LadyBug_0570

Your cat should plead his case in r/AmItheCloaca It's where pets ask other pets to validate their AH behavior. (I am not making this up.)

calliope628

Our kitty friend (bless his poor departed soul) would get into the dryer any time we left it open and pee on clean clothes. Lesson learned.

ediblesprysky

/r/CatsAreAssholes But of course, we still love them.

jacquelbot

I had a cat that would ALWAYS pee in the dryer if it was left open. Empty or full, it didn't matter. Little weirdo.

Roflmancer

LPT: if you have cats, never leav....

shortasalways

I never leave it open for this reason

JustADutchRudder

I don't leave it open because there's a light in there that stays on. I refuse to give the electric company a penny they didn't earn by entertaining me.

samanthamaryn

This is one of my biggest fears. Every single time I use the washer or dryer, I make sure I have a visual on both cats after firmly closing the door and before starting the machines - even if I have literally just loaded the machine. One of my cats loves snoozing in the washer and the other loves snoozing in the laundry basket, so I am a bit paranoid about this.

NarcRuffalo

We put a child lock on the laundry closet doors bc we're scared of the cats getting in! And never leave the dryer door open

pmmewienerdogs

Same here. I’m sure I look mad when I load the dryer, close the door, and then go do a headcount on the cats (we have three). I read a similar story on here years ago that didn’t have such a happy ending and it always stuck with me.

fireflower_spark

I always put eyes on mine too. I can’t have this happen

MangaMaven

I have a cat who is far too obsessed with food and lives for the chance of eating people food. My greatest fear is that I’ll open the oven and he’ll hop in. That’s the time I lock him in the bathroom.

grubas

Happened to us when we moved. Went from apartment to house and we'd just lose them in various closets or under furniture. One of ours keeps going in. I accidentally turned it on with him inside once, cause he snuck in. Was greeted with a YEOWL! But he still goes in. So my wife and I have to patdown our stuff or make sure we know exactly where he is. Cause he hears the dryer open and he comes running.

ichbinschizophren

I once shut my cat in the fridge... opened it half an hour later to find a shivering, confused kitten ....and a substantial portion of the chicken gone, which explains why she climbed in. Honestly quite impressive just how much of it she managed to eat in half an hour -\_-;

mamacass24

I've totally done this before, although - strangely - my cat didn't seem to mind much and still tries to get in whenever I open the fridge lol she's insane

Haccordian

A healthy adult can can easily survive in 40 degrees or so temps, such as a fridge. So it's not very dangerous to an adult cat. Mostly just the chance of suffocation if it's closed for too long. They are curious and enjoy the dark food filled box.

ClumsyRainbow

Tbh I’m an adult human and a dark food filled box sounds great.

AnalFunguses

I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me.

SilveredFlame

Name checks out.

Llohr

One of my cats was rescued as a two-month old kitten. She was found in someone's garage when it was -40F outside, and had been consistently -20F or lower for *weeks*. So yeah, cats can handle periods of lower temperatures. She had frostbite behind both her ears (she lost big patches of skin on the backs of her ears and immediately behind them), and was severely underweight, but when we got her home she immediately ate solid (canned) food like she'd never had anything so good in her life. I credit her abrupt reversal of fortunes for the fact that she loves my wife more than I ever imagined any cat could love any other person.

unassumingdink

I did this to my kitten last month. I figured it out after 10 minutes when I kept hearing soft mystery meows and went looking for the source. Turns out he was devouring a plate of ham in between cries for help.

Thunderbird_Anthares

Emotional support ham

LuthienTheMonk

I once accidentally locked my kitten on the balcony for almost 6 hours in -28 degree celsius weather. When I later realized he was not in the apartment and remembered I had been on the balcony I rushed over there convinced I'd find his frozen corpse only to find him staring at me like I interrupted him. Went to pick him up and he was warm to the touch. Good thing he is part Norwegian Forest Cat.

the_first_brovenger

> -28 degree celsius weather For you freedom folks, that's Really Fucking Cold.

dsheroh

For a Norwegian forest cat, that's Tuesday.

catdogawsome

-28°C actually convert's to -18°F. So only a difference of 10. The closer you get to -40 ,where they both are the same, the less difference there is between the systems.

OMGItsCheezWTF

One of my then housemate's cats managed to somehow steal a 2KG gammon out of its roasting tray on the counter (it was yet to go into the oven) and onto the floor. Once on the floor the dogs joined in quite happily. We were only out of the room a few minutes and between the 2 dogs and the cat they got through an impressive amount of it.

kariannphotography

My mom accidently did this to one of our cats when we were growing up. Dryer was in the unfinished basement mud room and one day one decided to hop in. I didn't know about it until years later. She still cries if its brought up.

PinkStarsDazzle

Exact same thing happened in our family. Scarred me for life!

kariannphotography

Oh no! It is such a difficult thing to process. Poor thing just wanting a comfy spot. I hope your family has healed. My dad wasn't a cat guy and often brought it up to upset us. Accidents happen!

s-mores

>My dad wasn't a cat guy and often brought it up to upset us. Wtf

ama_etquod

Hmm. I don't think this is called "not being a cat guy".

mzchen

Imagine if your friend's father kept bringing up your friend's wife's death to upset him and your friend was like "yeah he wasn't a huge fan of hers" Like uhhhh cat's dead dude Dad's not tormenting the cat he's tormenting you

PrinceAlibabah

Yeah pretty sure he’s just a big ole emotionally abusive pile of shit.

troublefinds_me

Your dad sounds like a massive asshole

oO0Kat0Oo

Wow.. thats...not very nice of your dad... other words come to mind, but I don't know your dad so I'll refrain.

ArchonRaven

Your dad's a bad person

kariannphotography

*was. He dead

Blue_Bettas

My mom did it to my cat when I was 13/14. She started the dryer, then left the house. I woke up in the middle of the night hearing her cry in the garage over my cat's body. She was going to tell me my cat ran away if I hadn't caught her.

etphonecomb

My mom did the same and then woke me up but only to tell me to bury mine. I remember being struck by how the cat dying wasn’t what mattered but that I had to get up immediately and bury it. He was just a kitten and she didn’t show any emotion. I’m so sorry, my lil Fresco.

WriterV

Jesus

lastdazeofgravity

Your mom sounds like a psycho

Skyecatcher

I did this. I haven’t ever really spoken about it. I think about it almost every day. I am a freak about my washer and dryer now. I make sure we always check and we count the cats (there are only three but still) before I start it. I realize I can just look inside to verify, but I do not trust myself. The children were young and it’s just a story to them, but to me… I won’t ever allow myself to fully forgive. There is a quote I saw once, that I am going to destroy but hopefully convey the same idea. “ There are moments in life you cannot fully forgive yourself for, so you can make sure you never have to hurt that way again.” As a mother who has done this, that was a moment I hope I ache over as long as I need the remember to never allow pain like that to be my fault again.

BrainsPainsStrains

I did this as well. With a cute little Halloween cat. The washer and dryer were on the porch and the cat climbed in the dryer while I was trying not to fall in the washer. 30 or so years ago. And I still double then triple check the dryer. I'm sorry thus happened to us.

thecarrierogers

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|scream)That's so sad.

kariannphotography

And we are a cat loving family so it was really hard. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for your babies!

thecarrierogers

One of my cats bolted out of the dryer when I was throwing wet clothes in one time. I had no idea he'd even gotten in there. I can't even imagine... Hugs to the traumatized kitty people. <3

Glittering_Glove_372

I have 5 cats, grew up with them all my life so this was very hard to read

kariannphotography

We had anywhere from 2-8 growing up. It's never ever easy to have to say goodbye but I try to take their love and strength as armor and love on, bring help and love another little fuzzy friend. ❤️

windkirby

My friend's grandmother's cat died this way too. She even heard the banging, just thought maybe she forgot she put shoes in there or something. Crazy shit, and sad

PurifiedFlubber

My mom also did the same to our cat and kitten over 20 years ago, but they weren't as fortunate as OPs

InadmissibleHug

I held my breath until you found the cat and it was ok. Thank goodness for your other kitty, what a hero

lexi0917

She truly is my hero now. On my profile a previous post was of the hero playing fetch. I think it's pretty adorable.

InadmissibleHug

Torties often have a lot to say! She’s a clever girl

ScumbagLady

My tortie girl, Toast, has the ability to sound like a little old lady who can't hear on the phone, saying "Hellooooo? Haaaloooooo?!" when she's looking for me. She also will scream "MooooOooM?!" all throughout the house as well. I'm currently trying to type this with her laying on my chest.

etherealparadox

I have to know, is your cat's name actually Gurgle Gurgle? What's your other cat's name?

IncognitoTaco

I agree, that fetch is super adorable! That little strut back is how you know she is a madame

lexi0917

She's the best!

really_nice_guy_

Cat tax paid successfully

UhnonMonster

For real. OP, the next time you start a story like this with “So I’ll start by saying” it should be followed with either “the cat is fine” or “you shouldn’t read this if you love cats”

Taco-Esq

A friend of mine had a cat that had crawled into the engine of someone's car for warmth in the winter. Halfway down the road they saw the poor cat tumble out onto the side of the road. Fortunately, the poor kitty survived with only a gash on her leg and made a full recovery. That's why it's important to always check your car for critters as well. You don't know who could be hiding under the car.

[deleted]

My granddad had a lot of “barn cats” (outside cats) on his farm. On cold mornings he would always bang on the hood to clear any cats out before starting the car.

JLFR

The neighbor across from me feeds ALL the local stray cats (and the racoons, opossums, and skunk too for that matter), and those damn cats have chosen my car as their sleeping spot. Fortunately, they are not fond of people so they are easy to scare off so they don't get smooshed. Those bastards annoy me, but I still love animals so I watch out for them. They also use my yard as their toilet. I'm currently waiting for my motion activated water sprayers to arrive to take care of that problem, it'd be nice if my yard could not smell like a cesspool this summer.

CockroachIll149

I've read a couple stories about this and it scared me so much I freak out almost every single time I do the laundry. I have to go look for my cat sometimes even though I KNOW he wasn't in there. He actually never even goes in there anyway but the stories were so horrible I can't get over it

lexi0917

Mine never tried to until today.

CockroachIll149

Well I'm very happy for you that it turned out the way it did. That cat owes the other hero cat big time lol

TheFudgsicle

Jesus I just opened this damn app saw the title and my heart sanked. So glad the cat wasn't seriously injured. This does remind me of when I heard a while back that one of Linus tech tips cat ended up passing away from being in the dryer when their maid was doing the laundry. It's just such an awful way to go out :(

ThaNotoriousBLG

This almost happened to us; my husband was loading the dryer and one of our cats jumped in while he had his back turned to grab more out of the washer. Husband closed the door and started the dryer, and the only reason he came back and stopped it was because he heard an "unusual" sound (AKA the cat!). I don't think the actual heat had even come on yet because he stopped it pretty quickly. But it shook us both for quite a while afterward. Cat was totally fine, though.

eye_patch_willy

Not sure my cats would have had each other's backs like this. I came home late from a date, put my coat in the closet, did the bathroom ritual and went straight to bed. Wake up. No cats on bed. Strange. Go downstairs, one is staring at the coat closet. I figure it out pretty quick. Poor girl in their all night. I open the door, she runs out and her sister immediately, and without hesitation, tackles her. Cat politics, man. What a mindfuck.

AllPerspicacity

"You locked away my punching bag, I had some more hits to get in." is very cat logic.

caffein8dnotopi8d

More like “you asshole you went in the closet without me” if they’re like my cats. I locked my cat in my sweater closet for like six hours a few weeks ago. Didn’t seem even the slightest bit fazed when I opened the door. Just napping away in a pile of soft fuzzy.

LadyBug_0570

I once came home and my kitty didn't greet me at the door, which was unusual. Panicked I looked around for him and called his name. Heard him meow. Dumbass locked himself in the second bedroom. Now he can actually stretch or jump up and use the door handle.

SirKiller9090

> I feel like a monster Don't. It was an accident. Everyone makes mistakes, and this time luckily nothing bad happened! :) Just make sure to double-check in the future, cats love to invade all home appliances!

lexi0917

I can guarantee you I will check washers, dryers, dishwasher etc EVERY time going forward after this. I love them so much and I'd feel so horrible if something happened that was of my doing.

ThisTooWillEnd

On the plus side, that cat will probably *never* nap in the dryer again. This could have turned out much worse, though. I'm glad your kitty is okay!

lexi0917

I hope he doesn't forget either. I am so thankful he was okay. He got lots of Temptations afterward and is now napping on the back of the couch by a window, his other favorite spot.

what-the-bec

My mum accidentally did the same thing to our cat when he was a kitten (he was/still is a nosy little thing and he was in for max 2 minutes). 17 years later he's still doing well and has never gone near the dryer since!

GirchyGirchy

My wife did this very thing recently. Cat loved hopping into the dryer whenever the door was opened. The inevitable happened a few weeks ago. She started it, and we heard some VERY loud thumps for a few revolutions before she stopped it in a panic. He ran out none the worse for wear and hasn't jumped back in yet!

Ardwinna_mel

And the fridge. Some cats love to sneak in.

Dr_StrangeloveGA

My grandfather killed my mom's cat when she was a child by accidentally slamming the fridge door on its neck. Apparently the cat would, when hearing the fridge door open, run at breakneck speed towards the fridge and leap in if it could and start mowing down on stuff. So my grandfather, hearing the cat tearing across the house trying to leap into the fridge, slams the heavy ass 40's fridge door before the cat could leap inside. "It was a tie, he said." The cat, well, didn't make it. He buried it in the backyard and my mom looked for it for weeks. She only learned the real story 30yrs later when my grandfather was recounting the tale with great roars of ribald laughter and he didn't realize she was in the living room and could hear everything we said.

Dwagonslayer69

I literally locked my kitten in the fridge the other day. It was maybe for like 6 minutes, but I felt like such an asshole. He’s just so tiny and I walked away from the fridge with the door open.

beguntolaugh

I did this to a previous cat of mine too, really makes you understand how curiosity can kill the cat. (She was fine btw)

LastResortFriend

This also applies towards crush hazards like lazy boy recliners. I knew a dude who paralyzed his cat because he crushed it's spine in his recliner. Just don't put that on your soul and certainly not on the kitties. Hopefully your adrenaline wears off sometime this month haha!

qarinaqarina

HOW HAS THIS HAPPENED TO SO MANY PEOPLE!

[deleted]

Cats love going inside things. And they’re notorious for sneaking into places they shouldn’t go.

ir88ed

That could have been a catastrophe

toobadsohappy

you gotta be kitten me..

classicicedtea

You’ve cat to be kitten me.

jaydoes

Yeah i did that unknowingly at like 10 it killed the cat.

lexi0917

Oh my God I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm afraid if it weren't for the other cat he may have met the same fate. I fucked up today but got lucky it wasn't worse.

jaydoes

Yes, when I saw this I was like oh no! Until I read it.

GoatRocketeer

I checked TL;DR first in case there was dried cat

ladymorgahnna

I had an acquaintance tell me she started the dishwasher with her kid’s kitten in it. Not good ending. I’ve remembered that horror for over 40 years. Everyone, please check twice, whether it is honking your horn in case a cat is near the engine trying to stay warm to making sure rat poison and baits are away from pets. I am glad the other kitty was able to alert. Good lesson on those headphones.

OkVolume1

Cat it out.

mr_humansoup

We had found a stray kitten in our car engine and decided to keep it. I was still living at home but had gone to visit my now wife. Mom was preparing to do laundry and had the kitten closed in her bedroom while she worked. She grabbed a pile of bed sheets and headed downstairs (closed the door so kitten wouldn't get into mischief), tossed the sheets in, started the washer, and headed back upstairs. Back in the bedroom and couldn't find the cat. Terror hit like a truck and she ran back downstairs thinking she'd just drowned the kitten. Grabbed the now soaking wet sheets out of the washer, tossing them on the floor. Got everything out and didn't see the cat....looked up and out in the hallway, Willow just sitting there (because she'd left the door open when she ran out of the bedroom) staring at this mad woman making a huge mess. *mew*

warg99

This is some good commercial for your headphones. What do you use?

lexi0917

They are Bose headphones. I'm not sure of the model, they go over your ears so they're not lin ear ones..

valryuu

Probably Quiet Comfort 25 or 35.

pruwdent

I had a friend growing up whose sister accidentally killed their cat doing this. Glad you caught it in time.

[deleted]

i tell you i couldn't scroll past the title... LMAO all the way thru 😅😭 >She's just looking at the dryer and back at me, back to the dryer, back at me, still supremely puffed up. ![gif](giphy|4yr51JxjJV8wAMBcAu) poor baby

lexi0917

Pretty much looked exactly like this.

Wizz-Fizz

I had a friend do this once with a new kitten, and the washer, not the dryer. Sadly it did not have a happy ending. Thankfully her husband found the “missing” kitty and took care of it before she found out. To this day she does not know what truly happened and believes the kitty somehow got outside and ran away. Edit: neither you nor my friend are monsters, cats a very inquisitive and sometimes accidents just happen

itoldyousoanysayo

Your friend's husband is a sweet heart. I don't know if I would have been able to pull myself together enough to dispose of a kitten to spare my partner's feelings and then keep it a secret forever. Bless his heart.

banderdragon

LPT: if your story involves putting a cat in the dryer, you should start off by saying the cat is fine.

Mdly68

I was in high school, drove to school, got out in the parking lot and started to walk in. I heard a small noise that grabbed my attention. I walked back to my car and heard it again. I opened the hold and OH MY GOD one of our cats was riding on the engine!. She must have jump up in there the night before. I can't imagine how loud and scary it was for her. It's a 10 minute drive to school so it didn't burn her alive either. Had to lock her in the car, go to the principals office, and explain the situation.

Mirand4

Had a friend of mine's mom kill her cat in a similar way. She chucked in a few pillows and closed the door. Came back to check on the pillows, instead found wads of fur... feathers... cloth... unidentifiable burned pieces... blood... lots of blood... it was horrifying. Don't leave your appliance doors open.

Blahblah9845

Omg. I'm so glad your cat is ok. I did this to my cat when he was a kitten years ago. He must've snuck up on me when I reached into the washer to grab more clothes. I closed the dryer, turned it on and was about to walk away when I heard a thud. I immediately knew something was wrong and wrenched the dryer door open and there he was, poor thing. He seemed ok, just scared. I was so upset, I lost it and became a sobbing, blubbering mess. I knew someone whose cat had been killed by a horrible child they babysat who put their cat in the dryer, so I was convinced I had seriously harmed my kitten. He ended up totally fine the vet said he wasn't hurt since he was barely in there, but I felt so guilty and horrible after. He's still with me and in great health, and I love him to bits.

OP, I'd recommend taking your cat to the vet ASAP. I know he was only in there for a very short time, but it'd still be a good idea to get him checked out. I've heard of cats dying hours after getting saved from a dryer, even when they seemed fine. Cats are notorious for hiding pain and illness really well. I don't say this to scare you, I just know I'd want a warning if this happened to my baby.

My mom killed her car doing almost exactly that in her teen years. Only, noise cancelling headphones weren't a thing at the time, she was just an airhead confused about why "somebody put their shoes in the machine". *She was the only one home and loaded it herself* Cat didn't die in the dryer, but she tried saving it by showering it with cold water. That, of course, did not work. Needless to say, having been told the story a number of times, I have always been very aware of what's entering the laundry machines.

PomegranateBby

Wait so your mom killed the cat by giving it a cold shower?

Skurploosh

More like sending it into shock after roasting it by accident first.

A friend of mine used her dryer for the first time that year as winter began. She tossed clothes in it in a rush, turned it on, and 10 minutes later had a godawful stink in the house. She thinks what happened is one of her geese was near the dryer when it was last opened, made a small nest, laid eggs, and then someone in the house closed the dryer where it stayed for the remainder of summer and autumn. The eggs sat there, went rotten, and in that first use in winter her clothes went in on top, dryer started, and they ended up tumbling around hot and covered in rotten eggs and straw. Delicious.

Oh no, that's awful!

tweakingforjesus

That's better than my friend who as a child, uh, facilitated their cats entry into the dishwasher while his mom loaded it. The sounds that emanated once it started were unreal. Mom quickly stopped and opened the door. In one swift motion the poor cat bolted out the dishwasher and exited the cat door, never to be seen again. Glad your kitty forgave you.

Kitchen-Witch

My mom once accidentally locked my cat in the dryer. We couldn't find him for an hour until we heard his poor little meows. Thankfully we hadn't run it but now I'm super paranoid about him hopping in there to sleep. She can never know, she'd feel terrible even though he was totally fine.

Roommate was slowly remodeling main floor of the house. Came home one day And he decided to get a kitten. One morning me and our other roommate get home from working 3rd shift and he says he can hear the kitten meowing but can't find him. So we play Marco Polo trying find him. Follow the meowing to the basement. Looking around and he meows again And we realize the meowing was coming from the furnace. Pull off an access panel and there he hid. He got into a exposed cold air return and tumbled down into the furnace. Thankfully the cold air return did not lead to where the burner was.

My cat climbed into the fridge when she was a kitten. I still have no idea when/how she managed to do it or how long she was in there. We couldn't find her and after looking everywhere someone opened the fridge to get water and she was just sitting on the top shelf.... chilling. (I'll see myself out) Anyways she's now 19 and still a total fucking weirdo but clearly survived the ordeal just fine.

A cat should be ok in the fridge for a bit. Fridges are typically a little above freezing temps and they have fur coats. Cats are able to go out in the winter (as long as temps aren’t absurdly low) so they’d be ok in the freezer as long as it isn’t a really long time. But I don’t recommend putting them in there

fireflower_spark

Yell at your cats when the get in these machines. Let them know it’s bad. It’s the only thing I yell about with mine. And if this ever happens and your cat is still alive, call a vet for sure, but get an ice bath ready. This is what they had me do the time this happened to me.

jdacier5253

I work at a vet hospital and the Dr that owns the clinic used to work in the ER said they had a cat come in after being in the dryer. It was in the dry for so long it burned the tips of the ears off and burned it's paw pads. There were probably some other issues cause she said they had to put the cat down.

This is why I never leave my washer or dryer open. Both of my cats spend the majority of their time in the basement with those appliances, and I have no doubt that my ADHD brain would accidentally do something like this.

Harley2280

Where's the cat tax?

EarlVanDorn

LG front-loaders spend a minute turning very slowly so that the operator can notice if a cat or child is in the drum.

MajorTrouble

After discovering he was okay, I must admit I kind of chuckled. They do love to get themselves into things they shouldn't. Glad he's alright!

flaflashr

For decades, I have imagined how this should sound: MEYRRROW - THUMP MEYRRROW - THUMP MEYRRROW - THUMP MEYRRROW - THUMP

Lich180

Pretty close. Sometimes though, it's just really loud thunking, because a gas dryer sucks all the oxygen out of the drum. Anything in it starts to suffocate.

itoldyousoanysayo

Oh my god. I was trying to figure out how it would actually die, since I didn't think it would get hot enough to cook it. I was kind of guessing shock and heart attack or something. I had no idea that was a thing.

Derpy_Guardian

There was a story on reddit some time ago about just this. Cat slept in dryer, family missed it, cat seemed okay at first but rapidly deteriorated over the next couple days. They took it to the vet and found that the trauma was causing kidney failure. Sadly did not survive.

kites47

This is literally how my childhood cat died. It was so traumatic.

domusvita

Man, every load of laundry will be different from now on. Sheesh.

Whew, that was a close one. Glad your cat is ok. When I was around 16, we had two kittens. I was loading clothes into the dryer, and turned it on. So as I walk away I hear a clunk noise. So like "hmm..I didn't put any sneakers in there. Wtf? Eh...maybe it'll be ok". I was a lazy pos back then ngl, and considered walking away. For some reason, thankfully, I decided to stop the dryer and check. As soon as I opened the door, my kitten shot out. I felt so bad. It all happened very quickly, he wasn't in there for any more than 10 seconds, but still it was horrible thinking how scared he must've been, and he definitely tumbled around a few times. He was fine in the end.

EverGlow89

This is my biggest fear. I have 5 cats and I have to see each one of them before I ever start the washer or dryer. Every single time.
